Revolutionary (War Pass) and Charming Kitten(Kitten=s Joy) breezed four furlongs in company (:48.20

& :48.40), with the formerskimming the rail and finishing alength to the good. Calvin Borel, slated to enter the Hall of Famethis summer, met the press aftergetting acquainted with the GIILouisiana Derby hero. AIt is agreat honor,@ Borel said ofFriday=s announcement. AIt hasn=tall sunk in, but I=m very excitedabout it.@ Regarding Saturday=sbreeze, Borel continued, AI wasvery pleased with it. He dideverything right. He=s my kind ofhorse; he does everything theway you=re supposed to. He

does what I ask, not what he wants. He=s smart. Andyou need a horse like that in the Derby. You just knowyou=re going to get in trouble and you need a smarthorse to get you out.@

Overanalyze (Dixie Union), with Gary Stevens aboard, and Palace Malice (Curlin), with Mike Smith in theirons, also worked in company. Palace Malice, a closesecond in the GI Blue Grass S. Apr. 13, had the edgeby about a length in the early stages, but the pairwound up on even terms at the finish. Clockers caughtthe GI Arkansas Derby hero in fractions of :12, :23.40,:35.40, and a final time of :47, the fastest of 70breezes at the distance. Overanalyze galloped out fivefurlongs in :59.60 and six furlongs in 1:13.40. PalaceMalice carved out splits of :12, :23.60, and :35.40,with a final time of :47.20 (2/70). He galloped out fivefurlongs in :59.80. The Dogwood colorbearer woreblinkers for the first time in the work, and will alsosport the shades for the first time in the Derby. AI alsoliked Revolutionary=s drill,@ Pletcher added. AHe wentvery well and galloped out strong. Overanalyze=s workthis morning was very good. It was his best work ever.@

Forty Tales was a sharp winner of his first two starts, including a six-furlong Parx allowance Jan. 5. He camefrom out of the clouds to finish second, beaten a half-length, in the GII Hutcheson S. Feb. 2, but failed toduplicate that performance in the Swale. Subsequentlyfreshened, he lined up in the Derby Trial as a slight 3-1favorite. Placed in sixth as Zee Bros (Brother Derek)zipped through fractions of :22.48 and :45.07, JoelRosario began to go to work on the far turn, took overfrom the pacesetter in mid-stretch, and found the wirein time as Capo Bastone came flying from last of nine.AIt was a perfect trip,@ Rosario said. AHe broke well. Ifigured there was going to be some speed in the raceand we=d be five, six, seven lengths off the speed. That=s exactly where we were. When we turned forhome, I asked him to go and he went and put me in agood spot.@ As for the runner-up, Pletcher added, AWewere thinking that if he ran really well we couldconsider the Preakness or something like that. We'll seehow he comes out of it.@ Click here for a TDN Feature on FortyTales’ owners. " " "

McPeek Duo Work in Company... The Ken McPeek-trained duo of Frac Daddy (Scat

Daddy) and GI Blue Grass S.hero Java=s War (War Pass)worked five furlongs incompany in 1:02 followingthe renovation break. FracDaddy, second in the GIArkansas Derby, finished ahalf-length in front, andgalloped out six furlongs in1:15.80. Java=s War was outin 1:16.60. AIt was a nicesolid breeze--it was amaintenance work,@ McPeeksaid. AThey=ve workedtogether quite a few times.Frac=s got more speed thanthe other horse. Java=s Warkeeps coming.@ Frac Daddy, a

9 3/4-length maiden winner beneath the Twin Spireslast November, was a close second in the GII KentuckyJockey Club S. Nov. 24. AHe likes this racetrack,@ McPeek continued.AThe timing is right. We=re encouraged.@

Normandy Invasion Works Quick... Normandy Invasion (Tapit) covered five furlongs in:59.00, the second quickest work at that distance outof 52 horses. The GI Wood Memorial S. second-placefinisher went splits of :11.80, :23.20, :34.80 and:46.60. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:11.80.Exercise rider Javir Herrera was aboard. AIt was more ofa maintenance move,@ explained trainer Chad Brown.AHe worked quick, but I thought he did it well withinhimself. He didn=t work with any company and gallopedout well. He came back good. All the serious work isdone.@

Solid Work for Black Onyx... GIII Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral S. winnerBlack Onyx (Rock Hard Ten) worked a half mile in:48.60 with jockey Joe Bravo in the irons. The SterlingRacing colorbearer set splits of :12.20, :24.20 and:36.20, and galloped out five panels in 1:02.40. AIt wasa good workout,@ conditioner Kelly Breen said. AWeweren=t looking to go too fast. We know what thehorse is able to do and we want to just keep him doingwhat he did before his previous wins. It was a niceworkout.@

Mylute Back on Usual Work Pattern... GII Louisiana Derby runner-up Mylute (Midnight Lute)went four panels in :50.60 Saturday morning underjockey Rosie Napravnik. The time was the 59th fastestwork at that distance of 70 workouts. ALook, I=ve saidfor three weeks, that Mylute=s big work is going to besimilar to what he did before the Louisiana Derby incompany, and he did what we wanted him to do,==trainer Tom Amoss said. ALast week=s work, which wasa half-mile [in 47.80] by himself, caught me off guard. It was a better work than I anticipated, not the kind ofwork he typically does. But he had a target. There werea couple horses working in front of him, and it kept hisattention. Today was certainly a mediocre work bymost people=s standards, but that is my horse, how heworks. His work pattern before the Louisiana Derby isalmost identical to what he did today. I=m verycomfortable with what he did. I have a horse that=scoming into the Derby the right way.==

Oaks Works, Gallops and Arrivals... Trainer Todd Pletcher sent out his four GI KentuckyOaks contenders to breeze at Churchill Downs Saturdaymorning. GII Gulfstream Oaks winner Dreaming of Julia(A.P. Indy) worked a half mile in :51.00 with an early

split of :25.80 andan out time of1:03.60. GIII BourbonetteOaks heroine Silsita(Macho Uno) workedunder Gary Stevensin company with GII Fair GroundsOaks winnerUnlimited Budget(Street Sense). Thelatter, who breezedon the outside, went

five panels in :59.60 and the former covered thedistance in 1:00. AShe=s a good work horse; that=s her,@exercise rider Patti Krotenko said of Unlimited Budget.ABut she felt very strong this morning. She=s definitelyon the muscle and ready to roll.@ Stevens was alsohappy with his mount=s work, commenting AShe wasvery keen going to the pole and I didn=t want herkicking all the way in. But she got over the track welland it was a good effort for her.@ Princess of Sylmar(Majestic Warrior), the GII Gazelle S. runner-up, was thelast of Pletcher=s Oaks quartet to work. She put in fourfurlongs in :49.20 and galloped out in 1:01.60 incompany with stablemate Fusaichiswonderful (FusaichiPegasus). AI thought they all did well,@ Pletcher said ofthe works. AUnlimited Budget was our strongest andfastest today. She=s doing well. Dreaming of Julia--wetried to do with her what we did coming up to theGulfstream Oaks [a :50.80 breeze]. We didn=t want hergoing too fast. We wanted to save something with her.All in all, it was good. I was happy with the wholebunch.@

The Bill Mott-trained Flashy Gray (Flashy Bull) workedin company and was clocked going five panels in1:01.00. AI thought it was very good,== Mott said. ATheywent off nicely. They were off easy in 13 and picked itup. It=s all we needed. I think the most important partwas that the rider felt like [Flashy Gray] was therewhen she needed her.== In other Oaks news, Close Hatches (First Defence)galloped over the track and both Pure Fun (Pure Prize)and Midnight Lucky (Midnight Lute) galloped 1 1/2miles. Beholder (Henny Hughes) arrived at ChurchillSaturday afternoon from California.

And Bill says to me, >Wayne, don=t worry. I know you worked hard. It was just fine.We were glad to be a part of it. Who won the race?= Isaid, >I did, with the other horse.= He said, >What thehell are you doing standing here?= I responded, >I=mcooling you out.=@

The Thoroughbred racing industry has a long andstoried history of producing passionate participants. It's

not unusual to seepeople who have hadremarkableachievements inbusiness, or who runmultinationalcorporations or evencountries demonstratean exuberance notnormally seen in theiroutside-the-racetrackpersona. We are mostoften party to thesedisplays when they'rerooting home one oftheir runners at theBreeders' Cup, theDubai World Cup or

under the Twin Spires. Friday at Keeneland, however, Isaw something which indicated the greatest level ofpassion I may have ever seen in the game. I was inattendance at Keeneland for Ken and Sarah Ramsey'seighth lifetime graded stakes win, which earned themthe track's coveted gold engraved Tiffany plate. Therace was also their 24th win of the meet. I've come toknow Ken over the years and wanted to offer him mypersonal congratulations on such a momentousachievement. I walked toward the Keeneland Director'sRoom after the winner's circle ceremony for theElkhorn. But as I headed into the clubhouse tunnel, Iwas almost run over by Ken, his son Jeff, their farmmanager Mark Partridge, family and friends, who, enmasse, had rushed out of a toast celebrating one of thegreat achievements of racing in Kentucky and wererunning at a pace which suggested a fire. They haddone so because the field for the last race of the springmeet, a $20,000 maiden claimer, had just crossed thefinish line and their 6-1 shot, also trained by MikeMaker, had won the race. I'm not sure any of the 17prior winners of the Tiffany gold plate would have runso hard, so fast and so joyfully to the winner's circle toget their picture taken with a maiden claimer, but that'swhat makes Ken Ramsey so special. He loves the sport, loves winning races, loves standing his own racehorsesat stud and giving them an opportunity to succeed, and, as everybody knows, loves to bet. But I daresaythe thing he loves most is getting his picture taken inthe winner's circle. And over the past 16 racing days atKeeneland, he's done that more than anyone. Ever.Congratulations, Ken. --Barry Weisbord

Despite a 63-day layoff on account of a virus, theconnections of All Too Hard expressed confidence intheir colt prior to this return, and the bay justifiedfavoritism with a stirring victory here that stamped histicket to the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot inEngland June 18.
