The NASPA Assessment & Knowledge Consortium is a collection of assessment instruments

powered by Campus Labs focused on key areas within Student Affairs. Participating campuses

can select up to four assessments to administer during an academic year. Consortium studies are

designed to provide colleges and universities with actionable campus-specific and benchmarking

data to shape and enhance programming inside and outside the classroom. Consortium members

have access to a secure assessment portal to view, analyze, and share study results.

Asessment Areas Include

Profile of the College Student Experience Orientation

Campus Activities Recreation & Wellness

Career & Professional Aspirations Residence Life

Fraternity & Sorority Life Student Conduct

Mental Health Counseling Student Union Programming

Student Union & Programming Benchmarking Study

What is the Student Union & Programming Benchmarking Study?

The Student Union & Programming survey instrument was designed to provide an

accurate portrait of today’s college students’ awareness of and experiences with the

student union. The Student Union & Programming Benchmark is an online assessment

that is administered during the spring semester or term to a sample of undergraduate

students. The assessment provides actionable data on: utilization of the student union

and participation in programming; outcomes of participating in student union events

and programs; outcomes of student employment in the Student Union; and, satisfaction

with the student union. In addition to institution-specific data, institutions

administering this survey have access to national and peer comparison benchmarking

data.

Survey Methodology

The survey sample was a random sample of 3750 currently enrolled UNCG

undergraduate students. The survey was sent via email on February 3, 2013. Students

received two reminders to respond and the survey was closed on February 26, 2013.

Minimal incentives for filling out the survey were provided. The response rate was

approximately 22% (N=825). Typically, response rates at UNCG average between 10%-

12% on surveys administered electronically.

Fall 2012 resident headcount enrollment was 16,926 (15,683.25 FTE), including

14,015 (13,409.75 FTE) undergraduates and 2,911 (2,273.5 FTE) graduate students.

Ninety percent (12,682) of resident undergraduate and 42% (1,216) of resident graduate

students were enrolled on a full-time basis. Sixty-five percent of resident

5

undergraduate students were female. Twenty-five percent of resident undergraduate

students and 14% of resident graduate students were African-American. Thirty-two

percent of resident undergraduate students lived in residence halls. In fall 2012 the

extension headcount was 1,246 (an additional 343 resident students took extension

courses), making the total university student headcount 18,172. (Institutional Research,

2012-2013 Campus Profile).

How Can the Student Union & Programming Study be used?

The results of the Student Union & Programming study can be used in a variety of ways.

Information from the study can be used to justify and inform campus educational

outreach efforts, demonstrate the impact of student union events and employment on

learning outcomes, and justify the continued existence of staff and other support for the

university center. The project provides a better understanding of the characteristics,

perceptions, and attitudes of today’s college students as they relate to campus

expectations and the student union.

Spring 2013

SELECT HIGHLIGHTS

Just over half of UNCG respondents (52%) said the student union (facilities, amenities,

programming) was very or moderately important to the enrollment decision (p. 7).

In terms of time spent in the EUC during the Fall 2012 semester, 54% of respondents

indicated they spent 3 hours or less on weekdays and 55% spent 3 hours or less in the

EUC on the weekend (p. 7).

Half of UNCG respondents said they most frequently learn about EUC happenings

through email, and another 19% said flyers/posters/sidewalk chalking was the most

common means of finding out what is happening (p. 8).

Reflecting on their dining habits during Fall 2012, 61% of respondents ate in the EUC at

least once per week; and 41% used a meal plan or declining balance while 22% used cash

(p. 8).

EUC student employees (N=16) completing the survey indicated tremendous skill

development (e.g., organization, networking, leadership) and a stronger sense of

belonging within the UNCG community due to their employment (pp. 13-16).

UNCG respondents also consistently reported improvement in skill development and

connections within the campus community as a result of attending events at the EUC

(pp. 16-26). In nearly all cases, the UNCG students’ self-reported learning outcomes

were higher than the national averages.

In terms of overall satisfaction with the EUC programming, facility and services, 85% of

UNCG respondents reported being somewhat (46%) or very (39%) satisfied (p. 26).

When provided with a variety of uses/purposes for a student union, respondents

indicated the three most important functions are variety of food options, a welcoming and

comfortable atmosphere, and an atmosphere conducive to studying (pp. 27-32).

Regarding satisfaction with a variety of student union functions, those eliciting the

strongest satisfaction scores included: welcoming and comfortable atmosphere,

availability of lounges/meeting space, and atmosphere conducive to studying (pp. 27-32).
