INTRODUCTION

There are numerous ways of tracking and reporting on students’ activity in Moodle. The various options are found in the ‘Administration’ block by clicking on ‘Reports’. It is worth exploring the different options to find out which one(s) best suit(s) your needs.

We will look at the main options in order of appearance on the menu.

DASHBOARD

The Dashboard gives you a snapshot of recent activity and also gives you a list of options under the dropdown menu on the right – see below.

These reports can all be filtered by activity/participant and you have the option to email the student by ticking the box as in the examples below. The example below uses Dashboard Activity Views and looks at which students have viewed the Module Handbook in a given period.

Dashboard: Activity Views First, choose the filters as below:

Then view the results. If you saw that someone had not viewed the Module Handbook, you could tick the box on their right to select them, and then send them a message direct from the page. The report can be downloaded as an XLS or CSV file.

Dashboard: Assignment Submissions Use the filters and date ranges to obtain a summary of Assignment Submissions – please note that this will only record Moodle Assignments NOT Turnitin.

Dashboard: Forum Posts Using the filters and date ranges you can generate a report (here it is for posts to the Module Discussion):

When viewing the report, if you saw that someone had made no posts to the Module Discussion, you could tick the box on their right to select them, and then send them a message direct from the page:

The report can also be shown as a graph and can be downloaded as an XLS or CSV file.

Dashboard: Recent Activity This gives very detailed information on activity within your chosen date range. The example below generated a huge number of entries as it reports every single action by every student. So – use the filters to avoid ‘too much information’.

As you can see, this example looked at one specific Activity ‘Unit 2’ over a 3-week period:

The report generated from this runs to more than ten pages and gives multiple entries for each student. As with the other examples, the boxes on the right can be checked and the student(s) emailed. The report can also be shown as a graph and can be downloaded as an XLS or CSV file.

Dashboard: Roster The roster shows each student’s last access within a given date range. It can be downloaded as an XLS or CSV file

As before, you can tick the box on the right and send the student(s) a message.

LOGS

Using the drop-down filters at the top, you can obtain activity logs for individuals or for all participants. You can view them on screen or download in text, ODS or Excel format.

The example below is for an individual log:

The next example is for all participants, all activities and all days but all these options can be changed to show a specific day, specific activity or specific participant. As you can see, this report generated 17,696 records so you may want to apply filters!

LIVE LOGS

The Live Logs option allows you to view all Logs in the last one hour for the course selected:

ACTIVITY REPORT

This gives the number of views, to date, of each activity in the course, sorted by topic. It is a snapshot of activity but does not show who has done what or when. There is no associated filtering so it is quite static:

COURSE PARTICIPATION

This is a rich source of information and can be filtered in various ways.

1. On the Course participation page, select the activity to run a report on. 2. How far would you like to look back i.e. (days, weeks or months)? 3. The user role you need the report for e.g. student 4. The action they performed in relation to a certain activity i.e. View or Post, in a

forum). In the example below we chose, by filtering, to see how many students in Syndicate 1 had posted to the discussion forum in the past week:

You can select any students you wish to email direct from this screen by ticking the box and sending them a message:

STATISTICS

This option shows trends in activity – for example you might see a peak in student activity on a Monday or a slump on a Friday.

Choose from the drop-down menus at the top to filter your results.
