  • Pastor’s Letter August 20/21 Dear Parish Family, Like many of you, I have enjoyed watching the Olympic Games these past two weeks. The competition and skill have been incredible. It’s good to see sports like swimming, track, and gymnastics that do not usually get much attention in the news. There is something wonderfully patriotic about the games and it is fun to see the nations compete in the medal totals. But these games are not mainly about winning; rather, they are about laying aside our differences and battles for a couple of weeks in order to enjoy each other’s skill and spirit. Whenever the games are held, the United Nations encourages its members to declare an Olympic Truce. With few exceptions, nations in conflict follow this request. This year one of the teams in the games is called the “refugee team,” its members being athletes whose countries could not support them or even abandoned them because of political unrest. This tradition began formally in 1992 when the International Olympic Committee accepted athletes who could not be sponsored by their own country. This year the term “refugee team” began to be used because some of the athletes had actually been expelled from their countries of origin. There are ten such athletes this year: five from South Sudan, two from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, one from Ethiopia, and two from Syria. Each of these athletes was sponsored and assisted by another country. Kenya, Brazil, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany generously provided the formalities of registration and sponsorship. When one of these athletes wins a gold medal, the five ring Olympic flag is flown over the podium and the Olympic theme is played. This year, the American company Nike designed and provided an Olympic world uniform for these athletes. No doubt the Olympics are about competition, but they are also about community and solidarity. The Olympics bring people together with the hope that the Olympic Truce will last beyond the two weeks that the games take place. I think the refugee team is a great example of that hope and spirit. Those who have no nation to belong to, no uniform to wear, no flag to compete under, truly become citizens of the world. Not belonging to any particular nation, they in a sense belong to each of us. Like all great lessons in life, these simple games have much to teach us. Sincerely yours in Christ,

    Rev. Michael A. Vetrano Pastor

Enter the Holy Door of Mercy Sacred Hearts has been chosen as one of four churches in the Diocese of Rockville Centre to have a Holy Door of Mercy through which pilgrims may obtain the same blessings as if they were to visit the jubilee door at

St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. One may walk through this door at any time but during this Holy Year of Mercy we will celebrate Eucharistic Adoration on Thursday from the conclusion of the noon mass until Benediction at 4:00 PM. We will also have confessions during this time and our Spanish community will pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. We call Parishioners who support this time of prayer our Anchors of Mercy. If you are willing to join them please just come any Thursday during those hours.

    and

    Just

ice Have you ever thought you knew someone until he or she does something totally out of character, at least the “character” you

expected of this person? You may reply with a question, “Who are you?” or a comment: “I don’t know you!” This could be the scenario that Jesus is describing in Sunday’s Gospel when someone comes knocking at the door and the “master” of the house refuses him or her entry. Sure, we may have been in the same place at the same time, but that doesn’t mean we know each other. If we hear but do not learn, taste but do not swallow, we have rejected the gifts being offered us. While Jesus is telling us—as is Isaiah in the first reading—all are welcome, we must be receptive and responsive to the invitation. We must incorporate Jesus’s message into our lives. We must follow his example of love, mercy, peace and justice for everyone without exception. It is not Jesus who bars the door; it is we who misplace the “key.”
