DC Summer InstituteIn partnership with the William & Mary Washington Center, developed the Leadership and Community Engagement Institute, a six-credit academic program composed of a two-week course, an internship and internship credits that give W&M students the opportunity to work, live and learn in the DC area for the summer. The class gives students the chance to interact with prominent leaders in government, education, non-profits, law and international relations.  Through site visits and guest lectures, fellows gain insight into the most effective leadership strategies from the nation’s most successful community change makers. Assist students in obtaining internships throughout the DC area that align with the topic. Internships from previous summers include the FBI, Jane Goodall Foundation, Civic Enterprises, Department of Education, National Conference on Citizenship, and United Nations Foundation.

Washington Seminar on Urban EducationDeveloped a program for twenty-five students to participate in an engaged learning seminar. The program takes place in Washington DC and includes site visits to schools, government agencies and think tanks. The three-credit course is meant to prepare possible teachers and education researchers/policy makers with an understanding of the complexities and practicalities of public urban education. Included in this exploration of schooling in the United States are varying conceptions on the purposes of education and public schools. Particular attention is given to issues of inequality, including its causes and strategies to mitigate it. Students in this course will examine a variety of topics, such as, the cultural and political characteristics of schools, school reform, the role of schools in a democratic society, race and racism, gender, class, social justice, educational equity, diversity, and teacher pedagogy.

Discussion topics include constant consideration of what a healthy system looks like, assessing risk areas and how we focus on those areas multi-departmentally, assessment of skill or policy deficits within the community/groups, and present challenges facing the system (reports of misogyny, lack of diversity, sexual assault). The Exchange Group helps inform the agenda for the Highest Aspirations meetings and continuity is provided from my convening both groups as well as an annual two-day retreat.
