Being active about safety

Previewing the best engine in the world

The engineer behind Ford’s EcoBoost engine, Barb Samardzich.

SAFETY features – it is by no means a new term, but it is quickly emerging as the

penultimate catchphrase in the car buying market.

Car buyers out shopping for a ride in the coming year will undoubtedly be faced with a bombardment of acronyms: SRS, ELR, ISOFIX, EBD, BA, ABS.

From premium brands to humble local makes, safety features being flaunted are key selling points to cater to a consumer market that is becoming increasingly safety-centric, but the specifications list of many modern cars can often sound like a big bowl of alphabet soup.

What does it all mean?Faced with the many confusing

terminologies, it is easy for the average consumers to fall back on features that work in a dramatic manner – such as the airbag – the more, the better.

Another acronym that is in vogue is NCAP (New Car Assessment Program). However, choosing a safe car to buy is not just about choosing one with the most number of airbags or stars in an NCAP safety rating.

Here’s a guide to better understand safety features and aid in your car shopping.

The first rule of car safety: Avoid an accident

Putting aside the driver factor, vehicle safety starts with the ability of the vehicle to avoid a crash in the first place. Therefore, every feature that only works after a crash takes place, like airbags, is a secondary consideration.

Vehicle safety features are split into two main categories. Active safety features are those that help the driver avoid a crash. Passive safety features minimise injuries when a crash cannot be avoided. Some higher-end cars may also include pre-crash and post-crash safety features.

Knowing the difference between the two main categories, active safety should clearly be a higher priority for car buyers.

Active safety features include anti-lock braking system (ABS), brake assist (BA), electronic

WHO makes the best engine in the world? It is a loaded question, but the average man on the street will most likely guess an exotic Italian supercar brand, or perhaps suspect that one of those unassuming but thoroughly reliable German engines is the one at the top.

The answer, which often surprises many, is Ford. Making powerful engine for a supercar is one thing, but making a powerful engine that is also economical to run and reliable enough to operate in all types of weather and driving conditions is something else altogether.

As far as engineering achievements go, it is a far greater accomplishment to build an all-rounder engine than one that only meets a narrow set of criteria.

The first International Engine of the Year Awards began in 1999 in Britain. The irony is that Britain’s No.1 selling brand Ford, has never

won a single Engine of the Year award until now.

After sitting on the sidelines for 13 years, Ford shocked the industry by bagging three Engine of the Year awards last year.

Ford’s one-litre Eco-Boost trumped Volkswagen’s 1.4 litre

TSI Twincharger and Ferrari’s 4.5 litre V8 to bag the overall 2012 International Engine of the Year title.

The same engine also won in the “New Engine” category and “Sub One litre” category in the competition organised by Engine Technology International magazine.

Ford began working on the one-litre EcoBoost engine in 2009, with Barb Samardzich, Ford of Europe’s vice president for product development leading the project.

In an interview with the awards organiser, Samardzich recalls her experience in getting the final sign-off and securing funding from Ford’s board of management in Detroit.

“There was this one time at a meeting when a board member asked me, ‘This isn’t going to sound like a sewing machine engine, is it?’

“My reply was, ‘No way! We

have a great NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) team and this little three-cylinder is going to sound fantastic’ – which it does.”

Samardzich says that the board member’s question simply highlights the general perception many still have today about small, three-cylinder designs.

“Our objective is for nobody to know that this is a three-cylinder engine and if people are talking about the number of cylinders, then we’re not doing our job – that was our line of thinking during development.”

Ford EcoBoost range of engines is not new to Malaysia. A two-litre, four-cylinder EcoBoost unit currently powers the Malaysian market Ford Mondeo and Ford S-Max. This engine squeezes out 240 PS of power and 340 Nm of torque, while consuming just 7.7-litres per 100 km of petrol (manufacturer’s claim).

Early next year, Ford Malaysia’s range will be expanded to include the EcoBoost-powered Ford Fiesta and Ford Ecosport. Both models will use the same award-winning one-litre EcoBoost engine.

Globally, the engine is available in two power output levels – 101 PS and 125 PS. The most powerful 125 PS version produces 170 Nm of torque from just 1,400rpm onwards, maintaining the surge until 4,500rpm. Performance figures from this tiny engine are almost on par with a conventional 1.6-litre engine.

When paired with a six-speed Powershift dual clutch transmission, claimed fuel consumption is just 5.3-litres per 100km for the Fiesta. Do expect to pay a premium over Ford‘s standard Ti-VCT engine.

The Ford Fiesta EcoBoost is expected to make its local debut early next year.

brakeforce distribution (EBD), electronic stability control (ESC), autonomous emergency braking and blind spot warning system.

Passive safety features include airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners with force limiter and emergency locking retractors, and a strong reinforced body structure.

A safe car should have a good combination of both active and passive safety features. Avoid buying cars that are equipped with passive safety features such as airbags but have no basic active safety features like ABS. It makes no sense to buy a car that “crashes better„ but cannot avoid a crash.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) works to prevent a car from skidding when a driver has to quickly swerve to avoid a collision. Unlike other safety features like airbags, studies have shown that ESC is the most important safety feature after seat belts.

In 2003, a study by the Swedish Road Administration revealed that ESC could prevent up to 40% of car crashes. Similar studies conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and Japan revealed similar results, and overwhelmingly support the proposal to make ESC a mandatory feature like seat belts.

The Federation Internationale de l

‚Automobile, a governing body

of motorsports worldwide, says: “ESC is one of the most important safety innovations since the

seat belt. You would never even consider buying a car without a seat belt – the same principle should apply for ESC

„.

Safety advocate Euro NCAP strongly recommends buyers to only choose cars with ESC and has since made ESC fitment a compulsory requirement to obtain the maximum Euro NCAP five-star rating.

The governments of Australia, Canada, USA and members of the European Union have made ESC a compulsory feature in all new cars on sale, including light commercial vehicles.

ESC should not be confused with traction control (TC), which may also be included in some ESC equipped models. TC only works when a vehicle is accelerating in slippery conditions and is useful in situations like driving down a snowy decline.

In our climate, TC is not very relevant as ESC already provides all the necessary assistance to maintain driving stability.

ESC is just a generic name. Some car makers have developed their own ESC solutions and patented the technology under their own marketing acronym. This non-uniformity can be quite confusing to car buyers.

Here are some examples of ESC solutions by various manufacturers: VSA (Honda), VSC (Toyota), VDC (Nissan), ASC (Mitsubishi), ESP (Volkswagen,

Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Proton, Hyundai, Peugeot, Ford), DSTC (Volvo), and DSC (BMW and Mazda).

Understanding the starsRecent trends show that car

buyers are concerned about NCAP crash safety rating. While it is good that car buyers are more aware, a little knowledge can sometime be a dangerous thing. Global NCAP is a non-profit organisation registered in the UK that aims to help consumers make better decisions about choosing a safe car.

It has affiliates in different regions, notably Europe (Euro NCAP), China (C-NCAP), Japan (J-NCAP), Latin America (Latin NCAP) and Asean (ASEAN NCAP).

All NCAP organisations test the cars with the same methodology: 64kph against a deformable barrier at 40% offset, 29kph pole side impact, and 50kph vehicle side impact.

One should be careful when referring to NCAP results from other regions, even if the model tested is similar. This is because the models tested may be different from the ones sold in Malaysia. It may have a different body structure and safety specifications to comply with a different set of local regulations.

Be careful when comparing results from different years. Every few years, Global NCAP tweaks

its test protocols to better reflect current driving challenges.

Beginning next year, Euro NCAP will further tighten the criteria for a five-star rating to include anti-whiplash injury for rear occupants and consideration for automatic emergency braking.

Currently, ASEAN NCAP scores are the most relevant to local car buyers, as it sources cars from the Asean region.

The MIROS PC3 facility, that began this year, is only certified to do frontal collision tests. The certification process is a step-by-step effort and it will take a few more years before the tests can be gradually expanded to include side and pole impact and to cover a wider range cars.

Safety for infantsBuyers with children, or those

who are expecting one, should consider a model that comes equipped with ISOFIX child seat anchors.

A study conducted by Australia’s Royal Automobile Club of Victoria in 2004 revealed that 70% of child seats are incorrectly fitted.

ISOFIX eliminates the chances of improper fitment by using a simple-to-use standard anchorage point between the vehicle and an ISOFIX-compatible child seat.

A study by The German Insurance Institute revealed that 96% of parents driving vehicles with ISOFIX had their child seats correctly installed.

A conventional seat belt-tethered-type child seat is likely to be improperly fitted as it can be quite tedious to loop the seat belts around a child seat, plus the child seat can potentially become loose from the tethers over the period of a long journey.

THIS is the inaugural issue of StarSpecial Motoring, which will provide an insight into what cars to buy for the coming year. We will be covering specific topics on motoring every second Sunday of each month. The intent of these pullouts are to provide readers with updates and also advice on how to get the best value for your money as car brands launch more and more variants each month.

Look out for our next issue in December.

Uppingthe antein no-frills motoring TWENTY years ago, car

buyers did not have many choices when shopping

for a car. If you were on a tight budget, your best option was probably a Proton Iswara.

These days it really is a buyer’s market, and it is not uncommon for buyers to haggle for discounts worth several thousand ringgit on a car.

One clear trend in the past five years is the democratisation of safety and convenience features.

In the past, features such as keyless entry, push-start engine ignition system, integrated GPS navigation, electronic stability control and automatic air-conditioning were exclusive to upmarket and luxury cars.

Today, all these features can be found in a humble entry-level model.

Take the soon-to-be-launched Kia Picanto, for example. With an estimated ceiling price of around RM64,000, this budget oriented 1.2-litre hatchback has all the features list ticked – six airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, keyless entry with smart key and push start engine ignition button.

And all that for a price that is just a whisker above the highest grade Perodua Myvi SE model.

The Picanto is not the only

name eager for a slice of Perodua’s market share.

Mitsubishi has a more affordable alternative: the Mirage, which retails at RM55,328.

The Mirage is aimed squarely at

thrifty buyer looking for a no-frills transportation tool.

The Mirage’s 1.2-litre engine has a claimed fuel consumption of just 21 km per litre, a figure that is quite achievable in real-world driving.

Mitsubishi is also throwing in one year’s worth of free maintenance, which should please the accountants.

There is also the Hyundai i10 Colourz Edition, which starts from RM52,888.

It offers up to seven colours to choose from, including bright pink and orange for those brave enough.

The 1.25-litre Kappa engine is the one to choose. It is quiet on the move and drives better than its entry-level image would suggest.

No discussion on entry-level cars can be complete without mentioning Malaysia‘s second national car – Perodua.

The Myvi is still an ideal first car for youngsters.

It has strong reputation for reliability, which allows it to hold its resale value very well – a major plus point for anyone buying their first car.

Inside, the Myvi’s interior is still the best in its class, offering far more space than many higher priced compact sedans.

Perodua is also throwing in a three-year free service, inclusive of parts and labour worth RM1,200 for the Myvi SE model.

Hot pick: Proton Saga SVAs far as value for money in the

entry-level segment goes, nothing beats the ubiquitious Proton Saga SV.

With a starting price of just RM33,438 for the manual and RM36,438 for the automatic, this 1.3-litre sedan offers a unique proposition of a spacious interior, a practical boot and decent handling with an unbeatable price.

A set dual front airbags are fitted as standard, although the anti-lock brakes are still missing.

The interior is simple but for something that is priced this cheap, there really is not much to complain about.

The cabin is surprisingly spacious, with enough rear legroom to keep the children happy while the boot is more than sufficient for a small family.

EXECUTIVE cars used to be all about size. If you owned a big car, you were obviously very

well off. This, however, is not quite the

case anymore. Executive cars are smaller in size, more sleek and con-trary to what many people think, you would not need to stretch a loan to obtain one.

Take the BMW 316i for example, at RM209,800 you can get a BMW sedan with all the looks and badge prestige for just a little more than what you would pay for a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.

With its 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 135hp and 220Nm of torque, you also have the pace to get to your next business meeting on time.

If you are looking for more legroom at the back, the Lexus ES250 is excellent value for money.

Measuring at 4.9 metres in length and sporting a price tag of RM259,800, it is a Mercedes-Benz E-class sized sedan for a C-class price tag.

Even though it may be a Toyota

Avalon underneath, Lexus has spruced up the ES with plenty of features and dressed it with a classier interior, befitting of a product of a premium brand.

We should not discount Honda’s new Accord even though it is now running into its ninth generation.

The latest iteration has had its dimensions shrunk but its cabin has grown in size. Efficiency has been improved and thanks to the use of active noise cancelling electronics and better sound insulation, the Accord boasts one of the quietest cabins in its class.

What is even better is that for all its improvements and added features prices remain unchanged for the 2.0VTi-L and 2.4VTi-L at RM149,800 and RM172,800, respectively, with the entry level 2.0VTi taking a price cut of RM3,000 to RM139,800.

For those looking to the conventional BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-class, the good news is that both models were given a facelift recently.

The 5-series now comes with sharper lighting elements on the headlights and taillights, a full LCD screen to render the instrument dials. It also has a new ECO PRO drivetrain

decoupling coasting function, and a new iDrive controller, which recognises handwriting input.

However, the changes to the 5-series pale in comparison to the overhaul Mercedes-Benz has given the E-class.

The model range’s iconic four-headlights are gone in place for single piece items, and the 1.8-litre turbocharged engines have been dropped for a more powerful and more efficient 2-litre turbocharged mills.

Prices of the 5-series model range start from RM354,800 for the diesel-powered 520d to RM419,800 for the 528i M Sport, whereas the E-class can be had for RM366,888 for the E200 and RM405,888 for the E250.

Hot picks: Peugeot 508GT and Citroen DS5

One would not normally think about French cars unless one wanted to stand out.

With the Peugeot 508GT and the Citroen DS5, one will not have to forgo the usual German

or Japanese qualities of fastidious build and comprehensive features as both cars boast excellent levels of build quality and onboard equipment.

The RM199,888 508GT is the cheapest diesel-powered European sedan available today, and it is one that is well-equipped, capable and generously-sized.

The RM195,800 Citroen DS5, on the other hand, might not be the most practical or sensible of choices in the market, but no other car has a body and an interior that is as striking and imaginative.

Its quirky looks may not be for all, but with a list of features that include a full-colour heads-up display, massage seats for the driver, and a Denon Hi-Fi system, there really is no excuse not to get one.

EXECUTIVE CARS

The 508GT is the most affordable diesel-powered European sedan in the market.

The Citroen DS5 is striking and imaginative.

A car for every necessity FAMILY cars serve many

purposes. For many families, it is the primary mode of

transportation from the school run to the annual balik kampung trip.

Often, the car is shared among multiple members of the family, including new drivers.

With this in mind, those shopping for a family car should be on the lookout for something that is docile enough to be handled by an array of individuals. The price, too, has to be right as these models compete in a very price-sensitive segment, and it also has to be

economical to maintain and quiet on the highways.

These cars are the automotive equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife, except that it has to be even more fool-proof.

There is a long list of cars that fit this bill, but this article highlights a small selection based on value attraction – compact and small-sized models priced from RM70,000.

One car worth highlighting is the Honda City and its commitment towards offering good value without compromising

on safety. The City is among the two

models in its segment to offer electronic stability control, or VSA (vehicle stability assist) in Honda’s dictionary.

This feature is available on the City E grade onwards, starting from RM88,089.

Electronic stability control, the feature’s generic term, is the second most important safety feature after seat belts.

According to safety experts, buying a car without this feature is equivalent to buying a car without seat belts.

The Volkswagen Polo Sedan, now in a locally assembled form, offers the best driving comfort in its class.

Its conservatively styled exterior may look a little dated and its interior may come across as spartan, but spend some time in it and the car’s redeeming qualities will shine through.

It may be an entry-level Volkswagen but its Volkswagen DNA is still very evident. It handles highway speeds with aplomb and its cabin silence is unrivalled by its peers.

Inclusive of insurance, the Polo Sedan will sell for just a tad below RM89,000.

The RM99,800 Toyota Prius c is not only the most fuel-efficient car in the market, it also comes packed with safety features, including seven airbags, whiplash injury lessening front seat headrests and vehicle stability assist.

The Peugeot 408 is probably the best option available for those seeking that elusive balance between European levels of comfort and Asian prices.

Buyers can choose between a 163 hp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission or a 145 hp normally aspirated two-litre engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Prices

Proton Suprima S has been awarded a 5-star ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Programme) safety rating.

start from RM109,888.The 408 has a very refined cabin

that remains relatively quiet even at higher speeds.

Hot pick: The Proton Suprima S

The Suprima S has plenty to offer for its RM79,988 (premium variant) price tag. It boasts six

airbags and electronic stability control with traction control as standard.

Additionally, the premium variant comes with Proton Infotainment with Android-based operating system, rear LED guides, DRL (Daytime Running Lights), Hill-Hold Assist and Park Assist with front parking sensor.

The handling on the Suprima S strikes that rare balance between allowing the suspension to be absorbent and cushy, yet firm enough to avoid the ride from being bouncy or unstable at high speeds.

At high speeds the Suprima S is quiet, remarkably refined, and comfortable. Its 1.6-litre

turbocharged four-cylinder CFE engine provides plenty of low down torque, with peak torque delivered at 205 Nm from 2,000 rpm, and yet boast a maximum power output of 140 PS.

The Suprima S is fitted with a shiftless CVT gearbox. In normal mode, the CVT provides a smooth transition of power, so long as you

do not push the throttle too hard, the gearbox allows you to build speed up at a steady pace.

However, if you are in need of a spritely drive, the CVT also comes with seven pre-programmed ratios, which replicate the physical gearshifts of an automatic.

WE have progressed from the days when the only travelling option for a

large family to travel around is in a Toyota Liteace or a Nissan Vanette, which were only window van versions of the same models being used by traders operating at the neighbourhood’s night market.

Today’s families have a wide variety multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) to choose from – from the RM60,517 Perodua Alza to the RM198,903 Ford S-Max.

At the bottom of the affordability scale, Perodua’s Alza offers a good balance between car-like manoeuvrability and people carrying capacity.

Let’s face it, how often are you going to drive seven or eight adults around? If the third row seats are only used occasionally, two MPV models are most suited to your needs – the Perodua Alza and the Nissan Grand Livina.

The Alza is a 5+2 seater vehicle that offers the ability to carry five adults and two children or seven adults for a short distance.

It has the driving dynamics that is akin to a car and does not burn fuel like a conventional MPV.

The Nissan Grand Livina, starting from RM86,880, offers all the qualities the Alza has and more. The new model has been updated with an improved exterior design that is more contemporary, while the second row seat’s adjustment strap has been improved for easier seat folding operation.

Unlike the Alza, the Grand Livina is a proper seven-seater and is capable of carrying seven adults comfortably even on long journeys.

For those who rank people carrying capacity as the main criteria, the Proton Exora is a good option.

Forget about the thirsty turbocharged Campro CFE

engine model. The standard 1.6-litre Campro CPS, starting at RM66,762, should prove to be more durable in the long term.

The Exora’s second row seat’s one-touch seat folding and tumble

mechanism is among the best in the market. Its individual air-conditioning vent with fan speed control for all occupants in the rear is only rivalled by models costing twice its price.

Hot pick: Nissan Serena S-Hybrid

Ignore for a moment the hybrid moniker, because the Serena S-Hybrid, despite its name is not really a hybrid. It has neither a traction battery nor a traction motor and thus receives no additional boost in driving motion from an electric motor.

Instead, it uses a fancy upsized starter motor to allow it to replicate hybrid car-like functions. Rather than constantly running the power-sapping alternator like in a conventional car, the Serena S-Hybrid’s energy regeneration feature only charges the regular lead-acid 12V battery and another lead-acid sub-battery when a driver lifts off the throttle.

When idle, the engine also shuts down to conserve fuel, restarting in just 0.3 seconds once the brake pedal is released. All these add up to deliver a fuel consumption of around 9.5 to 10 km per litre making the figures quite respectable for a full size, eight-seater MPV.

While not as sophisticated as a full hybrid model, the beauty

of the Serena S-Hybrid is that it qualifies for import and excise duty exemptions, which will expire by the end of this year pending further announcement by the government. With the current exemption, the Serena S-Hybrid sells for RM149,500.

Inside, it boasts an impressive seat configuration, with a middle second-row seat seat that can slide until the front seats, allowing for easy walk-through access to all three rows of seats.

Powered to pleaseEVEN with all the talk of

economic crisis, there is no discernable shortage of cars

with impressive performance to woo car enthusiasts.

Recently, Volkswagen returned with the Mk7 Golf GTI, Ford let loose the Focus ST on our roads, Porsche unveiled the new Cayman, Ferrari wowed the crowds with its ultimate grand tourer, the F12berlinetta, and McLaren officially opened its doors here in Malaysia.

However, for all the promise of horsepower, speed and excitement, the one car that still manages to deliver the most potent of adrenaline hits for the money is Renault’s slightly improved Megane RS265.

Power from the same two-litre turbocharged engine has been tweaked to deliver 15 hp and 20 Nm more torque over the RS250 model with 265 hp and 360 Nm of torque. This comes together to trim its 0 to 100kph time by 0.1 seconds to six seconds flat, and bumps up its top speed by 5kph to rounded 250kph.

Even with the slight performance increase, TC Euro Cars has claimed that the RS265 is able to lap the Sepang International Circuit two seconds faster than its predecessor.

While it may not be the fastest or the most powerful car in its class, it is unmatched in its level of involvement and performance.

IF there is one type of vehicle that has come a long way since its conception, it is the SUV. From off-road vehicles that

were used to forge into uncharted parts of the world, the modern day SUV now serves as the ideal all-in-one carriage for families.

Mazda certainly has found a cash cow in the CX-5, which has proven to be a success for the Japanese company. The CX-5 is Mazda’s first model to come laden with the full range of SKYACTIV fuel efficient technologies, which include drivetrain optimisation, body construction and chassis design.

For all its focus on fuel efficiency, the CX-5 still feels like it is designed for the driver in mind, and the recently introduced CKD models have lowered its prices to between RM136,943 and RM154,385. without any noticeable cut back on its quality.

At RM159,999, the European-built Ford Kuga does ask considerably more than its Japanese competitors, but it also offers more, with an on-demand four-wheel drive system for better traction and improved fuel efficiency, a hands-free powered lift gate, and the Ford’s SYNC system with voice-recognition functions. Its Ecoboost engine delivers the needed thrust and returns a small fuel consumption bill.

The sporty two-door MINI Paceman might not be the most practical or the most sensible

of SUVs in the market – its RM288,888 puts it out of the reach of most people – but its looks have got people talking.

Off-road capabilities are not high on its list of priorities; instead the Paceman comes equipped with neat features for the average urban dweller such as a Dynamic music feature, which automatically selects a suitable

track in relation to the driver’s driving style, a centre rail with adjustable storage pods, and an ambient lighting function with 756 lighting options.

Hot pick: Honda CR-VMost people flock to SUVs

simply for their ease of getting in and exiting, high ground clearance and the available space

inside. If there is one SUV that encompasses all those traits into a package that is attainable to most buyers, it is Honda’s new CR-V.

Even though the CR-V is no small vehicle of any sort, the cabin feels more spacious that its chunky proportions might suggest.

Honda’s engineers have crammed useful storage bins into

every empty nook and cranny as well as an ingenious rear-seat folding mechanism that allows users to fold the seats flat at the flip of a switch.

For something that rides tall and is weighed down by a four-wheel drive system, the CR-V handles admirably well.

l See price list on pg 13

SPORTS UTILITY VEHICLES (SUVs)

The CR-V is still on top of the pyramid.

S OMETHING that offers far more practicalities beyond a closed body vehicle, the pick-

up truck certainly has exploded in popularity in recent years, especially among city folk.

Although a number of pick-up trucks have moved upmarket to capitalise on this new and willing demographic, they have not lost their fit-for-purpose construction. One example is the new Isuzu D-Max, which costs from RM69,799 for the 4x2 MT low rider to RM100,689 for the highest end variant.

Recently, Mitsubishi has seen the proliferation of purchases of pick-up trucks in urban areas and responded with the RM106,835 Triton VGT GS, which comes with luxuries including, a powered sunroof and a sliding rear vent window.

Since pick-up trucks have a longer shelf life than normal cars and SUVs, many of the D-Max competitors are only half way through their product life cycle, a few of which have received a number of updates.

Nissan gave the top two variants of the mighty Navara an update that only consisted of a new front

grille, sophisticated looking alloys, and a touchscreen multimedia system with a useful reverse camera and navigation function.

Toyota too introduced some minor updates to its venerable Hilux pick-up truck in the form of dark interior trim, redesigned front fog lamps, front seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters across the range, and a six-way power adjustable driver’s seat just for the top of the range RM109,199 3.0G variant.

Hot pick: Ford RangerPick-up trucks nowadays boast

car-like interiors, but none more convincingly than the Ford Ranger.

Besides the chunky, macho styling of its dashboard, there is not much to suggest that the Ranger is any different from all the pick-up trucks out there.

That is until you spy additional buttons such as the Bluetooth phone pairing buttons, and a button to activate the voice-recognition function, and another to adjust the automated headlights and wiper system.

The Ranger also has a sharp steering, well-honed dynamics and superb cabin refinement.

PICK-UP TRUCKS

The Ranger appeals with its modern car-like qualities.

Techron cleanIN today’s challenging driving

conditions, especially in the urban areas, vehicles are

subjected to a number of factors that impact engine performance. Bumper to bumper traffic crawls, longer hours on the road, tougher driving conditions and rising fuel prices add to the pressure.

That, in a nutshell, describes the realities of present day driving. Against this backdrop, it is important to choose a fuel that offers proven cleaning power, a list of key benefits for optimum engine performance and fuel economy and at the same time ensures less emission into the environment.

It is a known fact that most fuels in the market offer one major benefit or another which might lead to a certain level of improved performance. However, it cannot be disputed that to achieve maximum engine performance in the reality of the present day driving environment, what is required is a fuel that offers a range of key benefits, and not just one or two.

Caltex petrol contains Techron, a specially-formulated and patented additive to keep engines clean. It removes dirty deposits in vital engine parts to deliver not just one, but five key benefits that help vehicles perform at their best.

The five benefits delivered by Caltex with Techron are maximised power, better fuel

economy, smoother drive, lower emissions and reliable performance.

Chevron Malaysia Limited recently launched a brand campaign to highlight and create awareness among Malaysian motorists of the “five benefits in one fuel„ advantage offered by Caltex fuels with Techron.

Maximised power Contrary to popular belief, not

all fuels are the same. Only Caltex contains Techron, which cleans vital engine parts, helps restore

lost power and acceleration, giving maximised power and greater performance so your engine can perform like it is supposed to.

Better fuel economyThe build-up of engine deposits

causes fuel to burn inefficiently. For a vehicle to deliver its best fuel economy, the fuel system needs to be deposit free. Caltex fuels have the proven power of Techron to clean the port fuel injectors in just one tank.

It cleans the fuel system to ensure an engine that runs more efficiently, helping you travel further on less fuel.

It also helps restore fuel economy lost due to the buildup of performance robbing deposits.

Smoother drive As Techron keeps the engine

clean on the inside, a cleaner fuel intake system delivers improved combustion and fewer misfires. This leads to a smoother and more responsive drive, allowing you to enjoy the journey.

Lower emissions Techron removes deposits left

behind by fuels of lower quality, making your engine cleaner. A cleaner engine emits less harmful substance into the environment.

Reliable performanceA clean engine helps your car

start smoothly, without stuttering, and run more efficiently and reliably. Obviously, a cleaner engine means you can trust your car to perform reliably everyday, giving you peace of mind.

With over 30 years of robust research and development, Techron’s unique polyetheramine formulation has been scientifically proven to prevent grimy deposits in vital engine parts.

Furthermore, any petrol-driven car will benefit from using Caltex with Techron as it starts working at ignition even if they have used other brands.
