on what we hope to be a spectacle for all interested inmotorsport, ranging from thetouring and static show of classic and vintage cars to a demonstration of F1 cars to coincide with the 60thAnniversary of Grand Prix racing. We are also demonstrating some CrescentSuzuki World Super Bikes sothere will hopefully be something for everyone encompassed in a whole weekend Festival for visitorsand locals to enjoy free ofcharge.

History of Karting

The Jersey Kart & Car Club celebrates 50years of kart racing in Jersey this year andis delighted to be participating in the

Festival for the second year running with demonstrations around the “circuit”.

Karting started at the Belle Vue Track atQuennevais in early May 1960 with Lord Louthand the Lieutenant Governor starting the firstrace. The original track was a simple design butkarting proved so popular that the track wasclosed just a few months later in order for a moreintricate circuit to be swiftly developed.

Interestingly, the organisation of regulated kartracing was a requirement of the Planning consentfor the track. Many Islanders and visitors havefond memories also of “racing” the hire kartsavailable at the track. Programmes featuring200+ racers for international events includedGuernsey drivers, French teams, the Britishforces and visitors from other countries. Ex F1team owner, Eddie Jordan, remembers his Jerseykarting days with great enthusiasm and formerF1 driver Derek Warwick also participated –including at the emotional final race meetingbefore the developers moved in to convert the siteto housing.

The 50th Anniversary is being marked with anumber of events and an exciting initiative to create a permanent facility at Sorel. The initialconsultation process has commenced and it ishoped that this will provide a positive thrillingexperience – primarily for Island youngsters.

Karting is an exciting but disciplined hobby withcadet racers commencing at 8 years old; racersprogress through 3 categories, based on age, allusing the 125cc Rotax engine and the top class isthe fabulous 125 Open category – using gearedkarts capable of up to 85mph.

We wish the Jersey International Festival ofMotoring great success and look forward to welcoming visitors to watch the kart demonstrationsand to the Jersey Kart & Car Club stand where fulldetails of the track plans are available.


WILLIAMS FW06 DFV - JONESBRM P261 - STEWART

The BRM P261 was an absolutely superb jewel of a carand probably the best of the 1.5 litre Formula . Lead driver Graham Hill was joined by Jackie Stewart in 1965and ran the Lotus 33 of Jim Clark close, on occasionsbeating the Flying Scotsman so it must have been agreat little car !. Jackie could well be described as 'theLewis Hamilton of his day' having a meteoric risethrough the ranks to Formula 1 and winning a WorldChampionship Grand Prix at Monza in his first season.

In the nineties the regulators tried to slow the cars down.The designers adopted more and more technology and laptimes fell constantly. Weird and wonderful shapes linked toengines revving to 20,000 produced a spectacular show.

Frank Williams and Patrick Head, names which for thirty yearshave gone together like Bonnie & Clyde or Marks & Spencer...but back in the winter of 1977 who could have predicted thefuture of this partnership ? Frank had finally turned the financialcorner, this time to his relief finding that nobody was round therewaiting for him ! And Patrick at last had the budget and freedomto design a complete car. The light and compact FW06 chassiswas the last and most successful of the cars before groundeffect aerodynamics changed the face of Formula 1 for ever.

FORCE FORMULA 1 During the 2009 racing season Formula One Race CarEntrants, or FORCE, were the primary organisers of, ortook part in, a number of exciting and high profileevents. FORCE has, over more than twenty years,established a reputation for delivering high qualitygrids tailored to meet the requirements of the


promoters. They are well aware that “The Show” is themost important thing and their overriding philosophy that“The Cars are The Stars” has proved extremely successful.

Having been the prime movers in all of the major HistoricFormula 1 race series in the past and worked closely withthe governing bodies and the FIA they are positioned towork with event organisers to achieve safe and spectacularcontent.

Our vast range of contracts not only in the field ofHistoric Racing but also Modern Formula 1 can

provide grids of cars from the birth of racingthrough to the present

day. In paricular theyare convinced

ES RENAULT FW18 - HILLTOLEMAN TG 184 - SENNA

In the mid eighties came the most powerful Formula 1 cars of all time, from just 1500cc the engineers soon produced engines delivering more than 1000 horsepower.The Drivers could just hang on for the ride but some, such asRosberg, Mansell and Senna harnessed the horses!

The Williams FW18 brought together all of the skills of PatrickHead and Adrian Newey; was there ever a more formidable combination. The Williams had great pace and rock solid reliabilityand was powered by the magnificent Renault V10 engine.

Drivers Damon Hill and Jaques Villeneuve scored no less thantwelve Grand Prix wins between them, threatened only bySchumacher who had now made the switch to Ferrari. Damonwon three Grands Prix in this chassis on his way to being the firstman to emulate his father as Formula 1 World Champion.

GATHERING OF SUZUKIS ATMOTORING FESTIVAL

A SPECIAL attraction for the fans of two wheels will bea gathering of Suzukis from the GSX-R sportsbikerange. This year marks 25 years since thelaunch of the iconic and legendary SuzukiGSX-R 750. To mark the occasion a collection of the various GSX-R modelsproduced between 1985 and 2010 willbe on display on the People’s Parkon Sunday 6 June.

The Festival will have aspecial appeal tomotorcycle fans sinceCrescent Suzuki arebringing over anumber of racingmachines and itis hoped thatamong them willbe the GSX-R ridden by TomSykes in the

World SuperbikeChampionship, KevinSchwantz’s RG500Grand Prix bike and a

more recent GSV-RMoto GP bike

ridden by LorisCapirossi. Theevent will givefans a rare opportunity totake a close up

look at topclass racingmachinery.

Festival organiserSteve Salmon says,

exciting machines on two wheelsand will be a major attraction for

all bike fans.”


R4D: A BRIEF HISTORY

E.R.A. (English Racing Automobiles) R4Dmay be familiar to some of our older spectators. The car is returning to Jersey

after a considerable hiatus, for it came third inthe Jersey International Road Races of 1947 and 1949.

R4D is the last development of the classic E.R.A.design. First built as a 2 litre B-type in 1935, theworks modified the car into a C-type, and finally aD-type, in which form it first competed in 1938.With Dr. Porsche-designed independent front suspension and a fully boxed chassis, R4D wasthe only D-type ever built. Featuring a straight sixof just under 2-litres, and burning methanol in itshemispherical combustion chambers, the car stillproduces over 300 bhp.

R4D spent most of its early life driven byRaymond Mays, initially for the E.R.A. works, thenas his personal car. At one time the car held virtually every hill climb and sprint record in theUK, and continued competing successfully wellinto the 1950’s in the hands of drivers such asRon Flockhart and Ken Wharton.

In Mays’ hands R4D won the RAC Hill Climbchampionship in 1947 and 1948. Ron Flockhartwas so successful with R4D in 1953 that hebecame a works driver for BRM the followingyear, going on to have works drives withConnaught, Aston Martin, Lotus and Cooper aswell as winning Le Mans twice in Ecurie EcosseJaguars. Ken Wharton bought R4D fromFlockhart, and alternated between R4D and aCooper-JAP to win the RAC Hill ClimbChampionship in 1954 and to come first equal in1955.

Raced brilliantly in vintage competition by the lateAnthony Mayman, R4D now competes regularlyin the hands of Mac Hulbert. In his ownership,R4D has set new pre-war records at such venuesas Silverstone, Avon Raceway, Shelsley Walsh,Colerne and Loton Park. Indeed, R4D has hadmore FTD's at Shelsley Walsh and Brighton thanany car in history.

R4D is still a quick car by modern standards. In2002, R4D reached 120 mph at the end of a 12.33second standing-start quarter mile, achieving 146mph at the end of the standing kilometre.
