POPE FRANCIS ON THE MASS

(Continued from last Sunday)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning!

The Eucharistic Prayer asks God to welcome all his children in the perfection of love, in union with the Pope and the Bishop, mentioned by name, a sign that

we celebrate in communion with the universal Church and with the particular Church. The prayer, like the offering, is presented to God for all the members of the Church, living and departed, in expectation of the blessed hope of sharing the eternal inheritance of heaven, with the Virgin Mary (Catechism, 1369-1371). No one and nothing is forgot-ten in the Eucharistic Prayer, but everything is attribut-ed to God, as is recalled by the doxology which con-cludes it. No one is forgotten. And if I have someone, relatives, friends, who are in need or have departed from this world to the other, I can name them at that time, interiorly and silently, or write the name so it may be said aloud. “Father, how much do I have to pay to have my name said there?” — “Nothing”. Is this under-stood? Nothing! One does not pay for Mass. Mass is Christ’s sacrifice, which is freely given. Redemption is freely given. If you want to make an offering, do so, but it is not paid for. It is important to understand this. This codified formulation of prayer, perhaps we may feel it to be somewhat distant — it is true, it is an an-cient formula — but, if we truly understand the signifi-cance, then we will certainly participate better. Indeed, it expresses all that we fulfil in the Eucharistic celebra-tion; moreover, it teaches us to cultivate three attitudes that should never be lacking in Jesus’ disciples. The three attitudes: first, learn “to give thanks, always and everywhere”, and not only on certain occasions, when all is going well; second, to make of our life a gift of love, freely given; third, to build concrete commun-ion, in the Church and with everyone. Thus, this central Prayer of the Mass teaches us, little by little, to make of our whole life a “Eucharist”, that is, an act of thanksgiv-ing.

CURIOUS ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH?

If you're curious about the Catholic faith or you've even thought about becoming a Catholic, our Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is just for you. Adults from all faith traditions, or no religious background at all, are wel-come to participate in our program of instruction. The program focuses on four essential areas: what the Church teaches; how the Church worships; the Bible; and personal spiritual development.

For more information, contact Marianne Hoffman at: [email protected]

This weekend, the Lay Carmelites of Saint Peter Parish will be handing out Brown Scapulars before and after all the Masses. What is the Brown Scapular? The scapular is a reminder of Mary's commitment to us and our commitment to Mary. It is a reminder of her constant presence in our lives and her interest in us. She really is a Mother and a Sister, leading us and guiding us to Christ her Son in whom we find salvation. She is with us in life and in death. We say to her often, "Pray for us now and at the hour of our death". Pope John Paul wrote in regard to the scapular: "It is a sign of the continual protection of the Most Holy Virgin, not only throughout life but also at the moment of the transition towards the fullness of eternal glory. Dear Friends in Christ;

Christian Neighbors has started to register children for their “Back to School” Program. If your children are in need of new clothing, a

backpack, school supplies and gift certificate for shoes and you have a recent hardship, are unemployed, have a lot of medical bills, etc, and will not be able to provide your child with the above, please do not hesitate to contact us. Everyone needs help now and then and our staff is willing to help you. You will be able to register your children until Monday, August 20th as our distribution date is Wednesday, August 22nd. We are open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. until Noon.

We are in need of $10 gift cards from Walmart towards new tennis shoes for the kids. Please consider purchasing one. We are located in St. Peters School. We continue to thank Douglas United Church of Christ for their Annual Monetary Donation towards this Program and people in our community who care. Without every-one’s support, our kids would not have a beautiful new outfit, shoes and necessities to go back to school.

May our Lord continue to bless each one of you who cares about kids.

In His Service, Marie Johandes Co-Director

Catholic Q & A from EWTN.COM

What is the Church's teaching on tithing? Are we as Catholics supposed to give 10% of our earnings?

Answer: The only mention of tithing in the Catechism of the Catholic Church is the following:

2449. "Beginning with the Old Testament, all kinds of ju-ridical measures (the jubilee year of forgiveness of debts, prohibition of loans at interest and the keeping of collat-eral, the obligation to tithe, the daily payment of the day-laborer, the right to glean vines and fields) answer the exhortation of Deuteronomy: 'For the poor will never cease out of the land; therefore I command you, 'You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor in the land.'' [Deut 15:11 .] Jesus makes these words his own: 'The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.' [Jn 12:8 .] In so doing he does not soften the vehemence of former oracles against 'buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of san-dals . . .,' but invites us to recognize his own presence in the poor who are his brethren: [Am 8:6 ; cf. Mt 25:40 .] When her mother reproached her for caring for the poor and the sick at home, St. Rose of Lima said to her: 'When we serve the poor and the sick, we serve Jesus. We must not fail to help our neighbors, because in them we serve Jesus. [P. Hansen, Vita mirabilis (Louvain, 1668).]" When the church speaks of tithing as a "juridical" measure, it means that this was a piece of legislation appropriate to the Old Covenant but not binding on us in the New Covenant. We are under grace, not law. Thus, there is no law binding Catholics to tithe. There is, however, the "law of love" which is even greater than a mere juridical rule. The Lord of love says, in essence, "I was poor, and you helped me" (cf. Matthew 25). So alt-hough we are not legislated to give a particular percent-age of our earnings, we are urged to be as generous as we can. The Church offers a "guideline" of an hour's pay per week, but that's only a guideline. Each individual chooses what to give. "

What is LAY ECCLESIAL MINISTRY??

According to Co-Workers in the Vineyard (issued by the United States Bishops in 2005), lay ecclesial ministry is:

• Lay because it is service done by lay persons. The sacramental basis is the Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist (received by all the faithful), not Holy Or-ders (only received by ordained clergy).

• Ecclesial because it is bound up closely with the Church, whose communion and mission it serves, and because it is submitted to the discernment, au-thorization, and supervision of the hierarchy.

• Ministry because it is the work by which Christians participate in the threefold ministry of Christ, Who is priest, prophet, and king and continue His mission and ministry in the world.

Lay ecclesial ministers are women and men whose service in, to, and through the Church is charac-terized by:

• Authorization of the hierarchy to serve publicly in the local church

• Leadership in a particular area of ministry

• Close mutual collaboration with the pastoral ministry of bishops, priests, and deacons

• Preparation and formation appropriate to the level of responsibilities that are assigned to them.
