After the death of his parents, he went on to become a monk of the Church, a quiet and gentle servant of God. Most of his time in the beginning was spent in the forest as a hermit. Nonetheless, many other monks began to turn to him for guidance. His own brother and guides saw within Sergius wisdom that can only proceed from a life committed to God. God saw fit to grant him spiritual gifts that the world has rarely ever known, including the gift of raising the dead. The Holy Mother of God was known to have visited him several times. News of Sergius’s accomplishments eventually spread as far as the patriarchate, who sent him to charter a new monastery. Though many came to him seeking military glory, he would only bless such individuals when the source of their efforts was peace. He only blessed those engaging others in battle when all attempts for peace had been made. He gave his life in 1392, his incorrupt relics were found & reverenced in 1422. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED TOWARD IOCC EMERGENCY BUCKETS! OUR

DEANERY COMPILED 100 OF THESE BUCKETS TO ASSIST HURRICANE & FLOOD VICTIMS.

THIS YEAR, A NUMBER OF OUR OWN ST. NICHOLAS FAITHFUL CONTRIBUTED TO A JOURNEY BY ONE OF OUR RESIDENT STUDENTS, ALEXANDER ZARYNOW, TO

TRAVEL TO GUATEMALA AND DOCUMENT RECENT EVENTS WHERE AN ORTHODOX ORPHANAGE LOST ITS PROPERTY, LEADING TO THE DISPLACEMENT &

RELOCATION OF THE YOUTH AND THEIR CAREGIVERS. THESE ARE HIS WRITINGS:

“This past summer I traveled to four countries and had a chance to experience their cultures. The wonderful thing I noticed was that they were all unique. Of course there were similarities between them, but as I spent time with each country's people, I noticed how truly distinct they are as a whole. I also embarked on a huge undertaking of documenting international adoption laws and the impact they have on the various countries. Surprisingly, those laws are the same from country to country. Now after just telling you that every country I went to was unique; shouldn't the laws of that country concerning its at risk youth adapt to that specific country? Of course it should, Alex. Well I’m afraid to tell you that this was not the case.

“The first country I traveled to and the one I will focus on was Guatemala, the country in which I was born

and adopted from. My former home, The Hogar Rafael Ayau, played host to me again, 17 years after my adoption at the age two. There I spoke with nuns and priests who enabled me to come to the United States and begin the rest of my life. In downtown Guatemala City (Zone One) they had the original orphanage and in the countryside the nuns had their monastery and the new orphanage. The property that the new orphanage resided in was granted to the nuns by the Guatemalan government for 50 years on the grounds that it not be destroyed. There they had about 40 children living and growing up inside of the Orthodox Church. I had originally gone to Guatemala City under the impression that my former home was under political siege solely from the Guatemalan Government on the grounds of repossessing the land originally granted to the nuns, nearly 20 years ago, for a new state run orphanage. While the government was trying to repossess the land, it was not just the Guatemalan Government behind this, but rather a power much greater and much harder to combat: UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund). An international organization whose purpose is to bring aid to the world’s at risk youth, orphaned children, and struggling mothers. While they do provide some good in the world, they have created an international formula for all children in orphanages. UNICEF has fallen to one of the world's greatest and hardest ideologies to oppose: Political correctness.

“UNICEF is no stranger to political correctness, and this authorizes their international adoption laws to come

to the point that having a private orphanage is against the law excepting that they do not allow for adoption. The Hogar Rafael Ayau is such an orphanage that it is no longer serving as one because of these laws. There are eight boys trapped in the orphanage downtown and five girls trapped at the orphanage in the countryside all because they cannot be adopted due to the laws set forth by UNICEF. Remember how I spoke that each country has its own cultures and customs? To be raised inside of an orphanage run by nuns and priests is a direct violation of the child’s rights to choose what they wish to believe or so UNICEF dictates. Orphanages are only to run by the government of that specific country. Even then, those orphanages fall to UNICEF bylaws and the governments do not truly run them but act merely as pawns of UNICEF. The cooks, caretakers, and psychologists are all people who must be approved by UNICEF barring any private hiring of employees. The United States, if you have noticed, does not have orphanages but rather foster homes. A system in which kids will hop from family to family creates an unstable life for the developing youth. Any country that has signed with UNICEF is subject to their laws and therefore their terms of how the at risk youth of the world should be treated. It is a vicious cycle that countries will get sucked into and nearly impossible to get out of. Every country should be able to make their own decision of how to properly care for its own children. Private orphanages with the proper screening (not a politically correct agenda) should be allowed to care for orphaned children and to facilitate adoptions nationally and internationally.

“The trip to the Hogar was enlightening, it was also a wonderful experience. Seeing the nuns who cared for me for the first two years of my life and to spend time with kids who shared a similar connection that is something quite special. While the Hogar Rafael Ayau is no longer functioning as an orphanage, it continues many works within the community as a private school and an online university. Madre Ines works tirelessly for betterment of the community and for the glory of God. While it is sad that they no longer function as an orphanage; we can take them as an example to spread the knowledge gained to benefit other orphanages here and throughout the world. By God’s Good Grace I will be returning in the future to do more work and traveling to more orphanages throughout the world to learn more about this international predicament. Please keep all of those who work for the care of God’s children in your prayers.” -Alex
