B Quarter-tone flat

Ord. Ordinario – cancels any previous playing method.

Ord. Poco sul pont. Gradually move the bow from a “regular” playing position to “near the bridge” (over the specified duration). Arrow generally

indicates a transition from one playing technique to another.

| For piano – stop string with finger near the bridge at the most resonant location.

All trills begin on the primary pitch and are semitones unless indicated otherwise.

Speaker Placement and Microphone Arrangement

The five audio channels should be placed

relative to an optimal central listening

position.

The violin should have either a single contact

microphone or a stereo pattern. The piano

should have a stereo microphone pattern

to capture the high and low registers of the

instrument.

microphone or two cardioid microphones in a stereo

instrument.

Notes on 5-Channel Audio Playback and Real-Time Spatialization Procedures

Playback

Audio playback requires a digital audio interface (MOTU 896HD or equivalent) as well as a digital reproduction engine (MOTU Digital Performer, ProTools HD or equivalent)

capable of assigning the five matched mono data files to the five corresponding outputs. Once initial levels have been set, no further adjustments are needed to the playback

volume.

Real-Time Spatialization

Spatialization of the first, fourth and final sections of the piece is accomplished by running the following patch designed in MAX/MSP. This patch utilizes the IRCAM Spat~

object for real-time control of the audio trajectory. The inputs to the patch are stereo only, therefore a line mixer should be used to route the output from the microphones at the

appropriate moments. The Circ.3 object (shown below) is the GUI for inputting the spatialization trajectory while the microphones are live.

The trajectories traced on the Circ.3 object during sections I, IV and V are to be improvised by the control technician based on 1) the specific acoustic properties of the

performance hall; 2) a desire for the sound to circulate seamlessly throughout the hall; and 3) circular and “star” (alternating diagonal) shaped tracing patterns.
