During the month of May, we celebrate the most revered woman in Christendom, Mary, the mother of Jesus. We think of her as the model of perfect virtue. But what is her value as a woman?

Proverbs 31:10 “Who can find a woman of worth? Far beyond jewels is her value.” Psalm 139: “For you created my inmost being you knit me together in my mother's womb.” Each of us is a son or daughter of God, but today, I want to address the value of women.

God’s will is perfect, and every woman on this earth has a unique, undeniable purpose. The same is true for our girls. From the moment of concep on, each of our girls was designed for a par cular journey only she can fulfill.

But the best way to evaluate women is to look at how Jesus valued women. First, Jesus refuses to treat women as inferior. Given the decidedly nega ve cultural view of women in Jesus’ me, the Gospel writers each tes fy to Jesus’ trea ng women with respect, frequently responding in ways that reject cultural norms. He recognizes their dignity, their desires, and their gi s.

Jesus, for example, speaks to women in public. He steps forward in a crowd of mourners to speak with the widow at Nain, and to call her son back to life (Luke 7:11-17).

He cures a woman who had been crippled for 18 years, laying hands on her in the Temple and saying, “Woman, you are set free of your infirmity” (Luke 13:12). When the leader of the synagogue becomes indignant that Jesus has healed a woman on the Sabbath, Jesus uses a tle of par cular dignity for her, “daughter of Abraham” (Luke 13:16). While the expression “son of Abraham” was o en used to indicate that a male Jew was recognized as bound by covenant to God, women had never been called “daughters of Abraham.” With this tle, Jesus recognizes this woman as having equal worth.

In John 4:4-42, Jesus ignores two codes of behavior. He ini ates a conversa on with a foreigner, a Samaritan. In addi on, this foreigner is also a woman. Her surprise is included in the narra ve: “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” (John 4:9).

Jesus steps over expected boundaries between men and women by his acceptance of women as disciples. In Luke 8:1-3, Jesus is described as journeying from village to village, preaching and proclaiming the Kingdom of God. “The Twelve” were with him and several women: “Mary, called Magdalene, from whom several demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.”

The ques on for us as Catholics is, do we value women? Do we treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve? It is undeniable that women carry out many of the func ons in our Parishes. Many of our ministries are headed by women. Most Parish func ons have a preponderance of women who organize, staff, and promote them. Pope Francis said of women, “Women have a unique ability to share the Catholic faith because of their penchant to experience love and share it with others.”

Let us be like Jesus and not ignore women. The Church would be a much poorer place without them.

In a shop near the Va can, a group of Americans laughed as the shopkeeper showed off his fluent English and latest souvenir, a key ring whose papal portrait, when pressed, ac vated a recorded blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics scowled disapproval. The shopkeeper grunted, “They’re a very somber order who’ve le the Church. I recognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” replied the shopkeeper. “It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be somber. Swiss Guards had been massacred on Saint Peter’s steps defending the Pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing especially the young to Christ—and frequent confession and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems, prayerful example, and gentle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provided recrea on and devo on in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, service, and liturgy. There is a deligh ul character in the original Dr. Doli le Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two iden cal halves, with a head at each end. No ma er which direc on the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the Ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Ma hew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to bap ze. He also tells them, “I am with you always, un l the end of the age” (Ma hew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final des ny. FEAST OF THE ASCENSION May 24

On the Feast of the Ascension, the church celebrates the return of Christ to the Father, his physical body leaving the earth behind.

In the Eastern Church this feast was known as analepsis, "the taking up", and also as the episozomene, the salva on, deno ng that by ascending into His glory, Christ completed the work of our redemp on. The terms used in the West, ascensio and, occasionally, ascensa, signify that Christ was raised up by His own powers. Tradi on designates Mount Olivet near Bethany as the place where Christ le the earth. The feast falls on Thursday. It is one of the Ecumenical feasts ranking with the feasts of the Passion, of Easter and of Pentecost among the most solemn in the calendar. The feast has a vigil and, since the fi eenth century, an octave which is set apart for a novena of prepara on for Pentecost, in accordance with the direc ons of Leo XIII.

The Paschal Mystery culminates in the Ascension of Jesus. A er his appearance here on earth in his risen body, and "a er giving instruc ons through the holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen" (Acts 1:2), Jesus "was li ed up and a cloud took him from their sight" (Acts 1:9): Christ's ascension marks the defini ve entrance of Jesus' humanity into God's heavenly domain, whence he will come again (cf. Acts 1:11) ... Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father's glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with him forever. Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit. (CCC, nos. 665-667)

For many years, this feast was celebrated as a Holy Day of Obliga on on the Thursday a er the Sixth Sunday of Easter. The precise date moved from year to year, as the date of Easter moved based on the lunar calendar.
