Pope Francis made a remark last year saying, "Chris an life is not a carnival, it is not a party and nonstop happiness. Chris an life has its really beau ful and terrible moments," moments

when things seem fine and moments that are bleak and where nothing makes sense.

This seems very appropriate to the mes we are living through today. How does one explain events like 9/11 or a worldwide pandemic? How does one explain cancer or the death of a child? And yet, God asks us to keep our faith; in God and in God’s love for us.

Scripture says, “be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dis-mayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) “Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6,8)

To find that courage, I need to remind myself of my encounters with God: When I felt the call to Religious life and to the Priesthood. But long before I felt those calls, I had already built a founda on of faith, handed down to me by my parents and for fied by what I learned in my Catholic school classes as a child and teenager. I look back to being gi ed by the Holy Spirit through the Sacraments I received and con nue to receive. I know how hard it has been for all of us not to be able to come to Church and receive the Eucharist! I am glad we have been able to resume Mass outside and offer Reconcilia on. For those of you who are sacramentally married, receiving the gi of the Holy Spirit as you proclaimed your marriage and love to one another was one of those encounters with God. Hopefully, these encounters with God will help each of us connect with the “beau ful moments” of our Chris an life.

It’s easy to “love” God when all is well. But when all is well, our love is not tested. The tes ng that comes from human suffering clarifies our love of God. This can be very frui ul for our spiritual lives. It is easy to believe that difficul es in life should be avoided at all costs. Though we would be foolish to create difficul es inten onally, we will each have our share of them in this life. Therefore, every difficulty and suffering in life must be embraced as an opportunity for us to increase our trust in God and, in so doing, to increase our love of Him.

Embracing the cross is a very Chris an concept, one that is counter-intui ve to most of us. Jesus accepted his fate on the cross. And with the cross came humilia on, suffering, abandonment, fear, and torture. In that moment, on a cross, Christ experienced the pangs of humanity’s suffering, thereby bridging the gap between humanity and God that sin had created. This was an act of pure love. When we doubt God’s love for us, remember the cross!

We, as a people of faith, have made our annual pilgrimage to the cross. This year's journey was quite different than others. Death was more palpable; despair more available; isola on more regular. As we weather this extraordinary season of life, the crosses that present themselves help us develop resiliency in the face of adversity. This is an invita on to be in union with God, most especially with Christ and his cross. Like Jesus, we walk this way stripped of control. As we encounter the many emo ons of these days, from loneliness and isola on to gra tude and awe, we must ask ourselves: Can we offer these to God? Can we trust that Christ is here with us?

The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gen les” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Ma hew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The ques on is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of rela ng to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our rela onship with him must be enthusias c; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fi eenth-century poet, knew what the quali es of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Chris ans. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV).

It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Ma hew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WHY PRAY?

A er the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Ma hew 14:33). Most Chris ans will probably never experience such a drama c miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifesta on of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly a uned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the li le things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE PRESENCE OF GOD

The San Gabriel Pastoral Region online Ministry Forma on Cen-ter will start in October. Due to the current COVID-19 situa on and the uncertainty of on-site mee ngs, we have planned the 2020-2021 ministry forma on centers in an online pla orm. A Ministry Forma on Center (MFC) is offered as the basic theological and ministry founda on Phase for Catechist and ministerial Cer fica on, and is highly recommended for all cateche cal leaders and ministry teams including RCIA, Liturgy, Evangeliza on, Adult Faith Forma on teams and more. Any adult interested in learning more about their faith is welcome to par cipate. Each ministry forma on center currently consists of three modules, each module is structured with four to six sessions. Each Zoom Live Session corresponds to the topics covered in a typical half day forma on experience. Online sessions run for one week each and are asynchronous, meaning you can complete the work at any me during the week according to the schedule you set for yourself. At the beginning of the forma on center a Zoom Live orienta on will be offered. Each module will have one Zoom Live session. It will cost $50 for all three modules. For more informa on contact Elizabeth Argueta, at (213) 637-7358 or email: [email protected]

Presiden al vetoes we understand. But imagine vetoing a papal elec on! Yet in the conclave of 1903, the Archbishop of Cracow (ironically, a predecessor in that office of Karol Wojtyla, the future John Paul II) vetoed the leading candidate on the order of the Austro-Hungarian emperor. Instead, the cardinals elected Giuseppe Sarto of Venice as Pius X, the first pope, a er a succession of nobles and diplomats, to hail from humble origins. Nor did the papacy alter his endearing simplicity. Tailors eventually made his cassock cuffs detachable because he absentmindedly wiped his fountain pen on them, forge ng that his old black cassock had been replaced by papal white! Taking as his mo o “To restore all things in Christ” (Ephesians 1:10), Pius condemned the theological innova ons called “modernism,” yet drama cally altered the then-common prac ce whereby people rarely received Communion for fear of unworthiness, manda ng early First Communion and urging everyone to frequent recep on. Refusing to bless troops assembled in Saint Peter’s Square—“I bless peace, not war!”—he died brokenhearted as World War I engulfed Chris an Europe despite his peacemaking efforts. As you can see, the difference between last year and this year is significant due to the pandemic and creates quite a trial as we strive to con nue the mission of our Saint Louise de Marillac community.

As this pandemic con nues with no real end in sight, we are now challenged to use resources making ongoing required changes to our facili es and campus needed to keep everyone safe. Resources are also being used to comply with requirements that allow us to keep Masses going. As everyone is aware, these requirements and standards change frequently and we are tasked to implement these as they occur. Despite these challenges, we are striving to do our best to provide these services and the sacraments for our community.

As great as our needs are, there are many in our community who have been severely impacted by the pandemic. Through the generosity of parishioners, we have been able to provide grants to Catholic Chari es, SGV Homeless Coali on and Shepherd’s Pantry. We desire to con nue this work and will strive to do so within our available means.

We are ever so grateful for all your support during a me when we all are facing many challenges. It is important that we share with parishioners the needs that exist. Respec ully we ask that you prayerfully consider your gi s to St Louise within your current ability. Thank you for considering this request. May God bless your devo on to our community.

O Thou who has given us so much, mercifully grant us one thing more—a grateful heart .

DID YOU KNOW?

Back to school prepara ons during a pandemic In August, families are usually preparing to start a new school year, with all the excitement and anxiety that brings. But this year, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, no one knows what lies ahead for school children. Talk to your children about how they’re feeling and what they’re worried about. Many people, including young children, are struggling with anxiety and depression during this pandemic, so be sure to check in frequently, and provide a safe space where children can talk about their concerns.
