COVID-19 dateline…

This weekend was supposed to have been the celebration of First Holy Communion for a group of boys in our parishes. You can be sure that hundreds of other parishes across the nation would also have held such celebrations. Thinking of all the things we’ve missed and will miss because of the quarantine is disheartening and downright depressing. Proms, graduations, tournaments, anniversaries and weddings have been cancelled, postponed or considerably

downsized. This isn’t what spring is supposed to be like! The situation certainly makes being positive and optimistic difficult. This is where our Catholic Faith can really help us. It is of utmost importance that we protect life, especially of the most vulnerable among us. A major principle of Catholic moral teaching is that the weakest and most fragile among us teach us a lesson of dependence on God. This lesson includes caring for the weak and defenseless in imitation of God. During his earthly ministry, Jesus emphasized the commandment of love of neighbor as the most concrete expression of our love for God. This translates right now into not having public celebrations of Mass during the pandemic so that weaker members are protected. Early on in this event, religious services were determined to be one place where the virus was more likely to spread. Social distancing becomes an expression of true affection and care. I know I would feel terrible if I thought my actions led to another’s suffering or death. We also know that this time of trial will not last forever. We will eventually be able to have First Communion celebrations, weddings and more in the not too distant future. In order for us to “go the distance”, we need to hold on to this hope, another important virtue connected to our faith. Please, let’s encourage each other, help when and where we can, and look forward to better times. We can do this with God’s grace.

2020 Catholic Home Missions Appeal Support the Catholic Home Missions Appeal today! Right now over 40% of dioceses in the United States are considered mission territories because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support funds religious education, seminary formation, lay ministry training, and other programs that build vibrant faith communities right here in the United States. Please be generous. More information can be found at www.usccb.org/home-missions.

Saints for the week April 27: A diocesan priest with a great devotion to Mary, Saint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort attracted many people to the faith by his preaching. He lived a life of notable poverty and simplicity. Saint Louis de Montfort encouraged daily communion at a time when it was not customary to receive the Eucharist frequently. April 28: A Marist priest and the first martyr of the South Pacific, Saint Peter Chanel worked on the island of Futuna. Struggling and having little success in his evangelization efforts with the local people, Saint Peter eventually was awakened on April 28th and clubbed to death in his home. Within two years of his death, the whole island had become Catholic. April 29: Saint Catherine of Siena was a Third Order Dominican known for her contemplation and prayer—as well as her involvement in Church and civil affairs. During the time when there were two and three popes each claiming the papacy, Saint Catherine sided with Pope Urban VI. She was named a Doctor of the Church in 1970. April 30: Pope Saint Pius V, a Dominican, was the one responsible for the implementation of the results of the Council of Trent—no easy task. Refusing to remove his Dominican habit, he is also responsible for the tradition that popes wear white. His Dominican training and spirituality were great helps in his efforts to reform the Church. May 1: Pope Pius XII emphasized both Catholic devotion to Saint Joseph and the dignity of human labor when he created the celebration of Saint Joseph the Worker. Work, as our Church teaches, should always be for the good and benefit of humanity. Saint Joseph is our model and patron in our work endeavors. May 2: Saint Athanasius felt that spending his time and energy fighting for the truth of the doctrine of Christ’s divinity was worth it. He even endured five exiles to prove it. Through his writings and hard work, we today enjoy the truth of the Gospel in its fullness: Christ is both fully human and fully divine. May 3: Saints Philip and James share a feast day because their relics were brought to Rome together in early May. We know nothing more about either saint than what is found in the Scriptures. There we are told that they were apostles, and tradition has it that they were both martyred.

CHANGES DURING THE

COVID-19 VIRUS PANDEMIC

Father Joe will continue to celebrate private Mass every day in the small chapel in the connector at St. Leo’s in Tyndall. THIS IS A PRIVATE MASS, NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. St. Leo Church will be open for private prayer and adoration of Jesus in the tabernacle every day from 8am to 8pm. THERE MAY NOT BE GROUP GATHERINGS FOR PRAYER IN THE CHURCH. Religious Education, all Knights of Columbus meetings, choir practice and other group activities or meetings are cancelled until further notice. The bless palms for both parishes may be picked up only at St. Leo in Tyndall. These will be on a table in the connector. Once we get a better indication of how long this will last, we will again schedule events as the CDC and our bishop permit.

PARISH FINANCIAL NEEDS DURING THIS QUARANTINE

Our parishes still have obligations such as salaries & benefits, insurance payments, utilities and other regular expenses like any family. Since we will not have any weekly collections, we are asking each household to

contribute via US Mail or some form of electronic payment. The diocese will soon be giving parishes online resources to make this easier to do.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

DURING THIS CRISIS As Father Joe indicated our parish has an emergency fund to assist families and individuals who may need rent assistance or utility payments. Such assistance is paid directly to the landlord or company, not the individual or family requesting help. Simply call Father Joe at 605-589-3504.

Changes in Light of the

Suspension of Public Masses Suspending public Masses and public events that are parish and diocesan-sponsored comes with many ramifications. The following list clarifications is offered specifically for the Diocese of Sioux Falls. This list is subject to amendment and revision with time and as Bishop DeGrood gathers more insights from pastors and parish experiences. Personal Prayer in Church Buildings/Chapels

• Where it is the local custom, church buildings may remain open during the day for private prayer and devotion at the discretion of the pastor.

Televised Masses

• The Diocese-sponsored Sunday TV Mass will continue to be prayed and broadcast via television and via online streaming.

• Similarly, local pastors and staff may develop means by which private Masses prayed in parish churches can be broadcast to parishioners.

Funerals

• Masses of Christian Burials may be prayed with only immediate family members present. The funerals should still honor the guideline of having only 10 persons present. Wakes may not be prayed in Catholic facilities.

*In the event of a death, Memorial Masses can be prayed after this temporary suspension has been lifted. Other Sacraments

• Baptisms are permissible outside of the context of Holy Mass and at the pastor’s discretion. Care need be taken to limit the size of the gathering and to include additional precautions such as using holy water that is blessed especially for the one person receiving the sacrament.

• Confirmations and First Holy Communions scheduled through April, 2020 will be rescheduled.

• Confessions may be heard in parishes. Pastors have been encouraged to publish times when they are available. This provision is made with the expectation that additional precautions for avoiding the spread of the virus are in place at the parishes while at the same time the seal essential to the Sacrament is safeguarded.

• Lenten communal penances are to be cancelled.

• Weddings that have been scheduled may still be celebrated. However, only the priest/deacon, bride, groom, witnesses for both, and five additional people may attend.

Thank You Our community changed lives this Lent, and CRS Rice Bowl wants to say THANK YOU! Don’t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl at the front of St. Leo the Great Church in Tyndall or drop at Mr. Golf Car in Springfield by May 3rd.

A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar

In today’s gospel the disciples were returning home so “downcast” they did not recognize Jesus walking with them. In our homes we can be so overwhelmed with responsibilities we don’t see God with us. Today’s gospel tells us to stop and open our eyes to the blessings we are to one another.

2020 CFSA Our 2020 parish CFSA goal for St. Leo’s is $29,000 and St. Vincent’s is $9,000. Currently we have reached 86.56% of our goal at St. Leo and 60.33% at St. Vincent. Thank you to all who have generously made contributions

to this year’s collection. If you have not yet contributed, will you join our parish family in sharing a portion of the blessings God has entrusted to you? With your help we can reach our goal. Remember all amounts received above our goal will remain in the parish. St. Leo St. Vincent Total $25,101.00 Total $5,430.00 Paid $21,871.00 Paid $4,600.00 Pledged $ 3,230.00 Pledged $ 830.00

Thank you Fr. Joe & St. Vincent Parish, What a nice surprise to get flowers with our senior meal. Thanks a lot. God bless you all, Liz & Melroy Hofer Springfield
