SCHOOL CAPTAINS & LEADERSLast week our School Captains and Leaders were announced. This ended quite an in-depth process which involved students writing an application letter for the job of school leaders. They then had to present a speech to the students from Years 2/3-7, staff and many parents.

SCHOOL NEWSR.I.P. FR JUSTIN KING SJLast Wednesday I attended Fr Justin King’s funeral which was held at St Ignatius Church, Norwood. Fr Justin died as a result of a massive stroke the previous Saturday. Fr Justin was 79, 62 years a Jesuit and had been part of the Spirituality Team and Parish here at Sevenhill for the last 7 years. He often said Mass at St Michael’s on a Sunday and said the occasional School Mass. He will be sadly missed by the St Joseph’s School Community. A local Memorial Mass of thanksgiving is planned for Thursday 2nd March, Sevenhill at 7:30pm.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY 2017In 1989 an ‘average Australian bloke’ had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard.

As an avid sailor, Ian Kiernan had always dreamt of sailing around the world. In 1987 his dream came true when he competed in the BOC Challenge Solo Round-the-World Yacht Race. As he sailed through the oceans of the world in his yacht he was shocked and disgusted by the pollution and rubbish that he continually encountered.

Once back in Sydney Ian organised a community event with the support of a committee of friends - Clean Up Sydney Harbour. In 1989 Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day received an enormous public response, with more than 40,000 Sydneysiders donating their time and energy to clean up the harbour.

The following year Clean Up Australia Day was born. Almost 300,000 volunteers turned out on the first Clean Up Australia Day and that involvement has steadily increased ever since. In the past 26 years, Australians have devoted more than 31 million hours towards the environment through Clean Up Australia Day and collected over 331 thousand tonnes of rubbish.

Next Thursday the 9th March, St Joseph’s School will once again be joining in this, now, International Event. This involvement has become a key part of our Environmental Education Program. The children will work with their respective Buddy Classes for approximately 1 hour to clean and tidy up our school grounds and some surrounding community areas.

We ask that the children come dressed in ‘suitable’ casual clothes. This means clothes that are suitable for cleaning up and collecting rubbish: tops are to have sleeves, no exposed skin areas and enclosed, sturdy footwear. No thongs please. We will supply plastic gloves but if children want something sturdier please bring your own.

STUDENT SUCCESSCongratulations to the five riders who represented St Joseph’s School at the Trinity College Interschool Gymkhana last Friday - Lara Degenhardt, Sally Grigg, Skyy & Paryss Maunder and Hattie Nicholls. The girls had some great results and St Joseph’s, Clare came 4th overall out of 35 schools competing. We must also acknowledge the parents who supported these girls in their endeavours. Well done to all involved.

P&F AGMThe P&F Executive are currently reviewing and setting criteria to provide all parents with the opportunity to transition effectively into a new executive. The current executive committee will be available to train and mentor the new committee. Please note the date for the P&F AGM has been postponed until Thursday 30th March at 3:15pm (creche provided). All welcome.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEKAustralia’s extreme weather!

STUDENT NEWSOn the 24th of February Sally, Paryss, Lara, Skyy and Hattie went down to Gawler to compete in the Trinity College Interschool Gymkhana. In the topsy ring Hattie got 3 firsts: most behaved pony, most suitable pony and best rising trot for a beginner under 9. She also got 2 participation awards for bounciest trot. Paryss got a first and participation award, Skyy got first in bounciest trot, third in most behaved pony, third in beginner’s pony and fourth in led pony. In ring three, Lara and Sally competed against about 30 competitors. Lara achieved a second and was on stand-by for the champion classes and also got into the top six in many events. Sally achieved first for pleasure pony, first in the rider class, was in the champion classes for both of those events, and was in the top 6 for a couple of events.

As St Joseph’s school was against 35 other schools we were very successful in achieving 4th overall and had some great individual results. Overall we had a great day and we were all very happy with the results.

STUDENT REPORT

2017 SAPSASA SWIMMING CARNIvALOnce again St Joseph’s School had a very successful ‘night in the pool’ on Monday evening at the annual Mid North SAPSASA Swimming Carnival.

13 schools (including St Joseph’s) from across our district took part and our school was very ably represented by 25 of our Year 4, 5, 6 & 7 students. St Joseph’s School was successful in claiming the Overall District Champion School Pennant as well as finishing runner up in the Percentage Pennant (total team score divided by the upper primary enrolment).

Some ideal swimming weather and an enthusiastic crowd made for a great program of swimming with many outstanding individual, and team performances. Congratulations to all our swimming representatives on your wonderful effort.

A Special mention for James Stockman on his outstanding individual effort; James broke 5 records and set 3 new ones!Congratulations to Paryss Maunder, Taylah Schell, Millie Roberts, Lara Jaeschke, Mia Fogden, Jade Chapman, Imogen Hawker, Hugo Stockman, Patrick Weckert, Oscar Pearce, James Stockman, William Hawker and Angus Ruddenklau who have all been selected to now represent Mid North SAPSASA at the State/ Country Swimming Championships to be held in Adelaide on Friday 17th March. We wish them all the best for that event.

A special Thank You to all the parents who assisted with various duties on the night, including timing, marshalling and helping out with the BBQ.

Thank You once again to Anna Hawker for her assistance in getting the team prepared for the carnival and managing the team on the night.

Great Team Effort everyone!

MASSThis Friday 3 March and next Friday 10 March there will be a parish Mass at 12pm at St Michael’s Church, Clare.

LENTThe Season of Lent is the start of our preparation time for Easter, and is a time of penance, reflection and fasting that prepares us for Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday.Lent commenced today with the feast of Ash Wednesday. Our foreheads were marked with ashes to remind us to humble our hearts and to reflect that life passes away on earth. Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of them in the Church. They help us to develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. The ashes are made from blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. They are christened with Holy Water and are scented by their exposure to incense. The ashes are a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to all those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His divine mercy is very important during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire season of Lent.

LENTEN FAMILY CALENDARIncluded with this week’s newsletter is a Lenten Family Calendar which comes from Loyola Press which is a Jesuit Ministry. The calendar gives some simple ideas of things you could be doing during Lent to prepare yourselves for the Easter Season.More ideas and resources can be found at http://www.loyolapress.com/

STATIONAL MASS, 3 MARCH, RIVERTON, 7pmThis Friday 3 March, the first of the “Stational Masses” that the Archbishop holds throughout the diocese during the liturgical season of Lent, will be held in Riverton at 7pm. At the Mass parishioners and school community members are invited to gather around the bishop and to support any community members who are preparing for receival into the Catholic Church. It is a Mass for our region, including the parishes of Yorke Peninsula, Riverton/ Manoora, and Lower Light. The name ‘stational’ stems from the Bishop of Rome travelling around the diocese and ‘stopping’ at each of the major churches.

PROJECT COMPASSIONCaritas Australia’s annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal is an extraordinary, ongoing demonstration of the faith, love and generosity of the Catholic congregation and caring supporters throughout Australia to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. Project Compassion demonstrates how love for our neighbours can transform lives this year.Starting today on Ash Wednesday, each week stories are shared from people in the Philippines, Timor Leste, Indigenous Australia, Vietnam, and Fiji. The stories told by people of these areas humble and inspire us, and show how our contributions to Project Compassion help people build better lives for themselves, their families and their communities. The theme for Project Compassion 2017 is “Love your neighbour”.

WEEK ONE, DINIA, PHILIPPINESWith the help of a program supported by Caritas Australia, Dinia gained the skills to earn a better income for her children and help neighbours in her vulnerable community.Dinia’s story is a story of healing, through her own skill and perseverance, and through support from a Caritas-Australia funded program. Living in the Philippines, she struggled daily with poverty in a country with many vulnerable communities.People living in rural and coastal areas have very little access to basic services. They face extreme weather events, environmental degradation and the effects of internal conflict and have little hope of a sustainable income. For Dinia, the untimely death of her husband meant an end to his small income and a greater struggle to feed and educate her children. She struggled alone, facing a future without hope, until her community encouraged her to participate in the Socio Pastoral Action Center Foundation Inc. (SPACFI) program supported by Caritas Australia.

NOTE: If you are unable to serve for your rostered turn, please swap with another person on the roster. Thank you.

WEEK ONE, DINIA, PHILIPPINES cont...SPACFI’s Integrated Community Development Program helped her develop diverse ways to gain a sustainable livelihood, continue to send her children to school and contribute to her community. The program foregrounds the need to work together for the common good, awakening Dinia’s innate generosity and leadership qualities. She was able to learn about organic farming, managing livestock, and starting a small business. Now she has an integral role in her community, a sustainable livelihood, and a brighter future for her children. “My life is much better now. It is much easier,” she says. I have a feeling of contentment, being able to help others.” - Dinia

PARENTING IDEAS

Homework causes more headaches for parents than it does for children. Some parents worry because their children don’t seem to do enough while others are concerned because they do too much. And most parents want to be able to help their children more effectively.Homework is very much a part of secondary education however primary schools vary in their approach. As a general rule, little formal work is given to children in the fi rst three years of schooling. Parents are encouraged to read and be involved in a variety of informal learning activities at home. Children may gather information for use in school the next day, make entries in a diary, or keep scrapbooks. There has been considerable disagreement over the last decade about the value of homework for primary aged children. Most educators agree that reading is the most valuable homework that a child can do and should become a daily habit for children.

HELPING KIDS WITH HOMEWORK• Establish sound study habits at

an early age. Begin by reading with children each night and gradually change to more formal homework in later years when projects and assignments are set by teachers.

• Establish a predictable routine. If homework is done at the same time each night, getting started is usually less of an issue.

• Make homework time as enjoyable as possible. When sharing a book make yourself comfortable, be involved in the story and enjoy yourself. Don’t make reading a test.

• Establish a good working environment for students. Make sure they have a quiet area away from distractions that is well lit and with good ventilation. A table or a desk makes a good work-space, although don’t be surprised if they spread their work out all over the kitchen table. Some children just love to be around others.

• Encourage children to work reasonably quickly and effi ciently. Have a set time limit which they should stick to. A little work each night is more productive than packing it all into one weekly session.

• Encourage children to become organised by planning homework around their extra-curricular activities. A weekly planner or diary will help older students to organise themselves.

• Keep explanations simple and practical when helping a child. If

you become upset or frustrated and the atmosphere becomes tense, stop helping.

• If your child has a problem, talk about the best way to fi nd a solution. Perhaps between the two of you it can be worked out.

• Be realistic and don’t expect to solve all homework diffi culties. When in doubt send a note to your child’s teacher letting him or her know the problem. They will appreciate being informed.

If you have concerns about the how much homework your child is set or the level of diffi culty of homework contact the teacher and arrange a time to discuss your worries. Such discussion is the basis of true partnership between you and your child’s teacher.

HOMEWORKHome or after school work is a common expectation for most primary school children

The nature of the activities will vary between different schools and for different ages so it is best to discuss expectations with your child’s teacher.

P&FThe P&F have been offered the opportunity to cook a BBQ and perhaps have the coffee machine at the Lally’s clearing sale on Thursday, 9 March at their property just out of Clare off the Clare to Burra Road near Hill River. To be able to accept this request on behalf of the P&F, I am after some volunteers to coordinate and work the BBQ and/or coffee machine on Thursday, 9 March. If you are available to assist, please contact me URGENTLY so I can advise the Lallys by this Thursday 2nd March.

This is a great fundraising opportunity for our students at the school.

Unfortunately I am unable to assist with this event and if we do not get a team together, we will need to decline the offer. My understanding is it would be simply providing snags in bread with sauce and onions, cakes, soft drinks, bottled water and coffee machine if possible. Sausages and onions will be provided, so we just need to source the rest. If you are able to donate baked goods to sell please indicate on the form below and deliver these to the school hall on Wednesday 8th March.

If you can help in any way please advise ASAP by calling or texting me on 0402 962 268 and also return the form below to school.

Thank you.Ally Mason - P&F President
