Introduction We are a small community striving to be where people feel they belong and can contribute, a place where people can know and be known. After all the church is not the building it is the peo-ple. St Joseph’s is a congregation of approximately 150 parishioners and St James’s of approximately 50. There are opportunities to be involved and to offer suggestions for improving parish life and ways of spreading the Good News. If there is an area of church life you are particularly interested in, please join in. Use this handbook to find the “key contact person” or speak to Father. We have people who help out in many aspects of parish life and there are a variety of opportunities for volunteers to make a difference ; from counting collections to decorating the church, organising rotas to helping with Children’s Liturgy. To offer support as and when you are able is enough. Just a few hours a month can make a huge difference. Giving We rely solely on the generous regular financial contributions of parishioners. These contribute towards our activities, running costs and services across the spectrum of ministry areas. For regular giving, Stand-ing Order and Gift Aid Forms can be picked up at the back of the church. Additional gifts can be made in envelopes for Mass Intentions available from the back of the church. New Arrivals Are you new to St Joseph’s? Please fill in a Registration Form which can be found at the back of the church and return it to the priest.

ParishNotices

The Sacrament of Baptism If you would like your child to be baptised in St Joseph’s or St James’s, the first step is to make an appointment to see the Priest. Please note that 6 weeks prior notice is required. You should not make arrangements for a specific date without talking to the Priest first. Any adult wishing to be baptised should contact the Priest. You will then be invited to join our RCIA group to prepare for Baptism, or if you are already baptised in a non-catholic church, for reception into full communion with the Catholic Church. The Sacrament of Matrimony If you would like to be married in St Joseph’s or St James’s and one or both of you is Catholic and resident in the area, please contact the Priest and make an appointment to meet at least six months before your intended date. You will be invited to attend regularly a Marriage Preparation Course. The Anointing of the Sick If you, or someone you know, is seriously ill, about to undergo serious surgery or in danger of dying and would like the consolation of this Sacra-ment, it is essential that you contact the Priest. He is always ready to make the Sacrament of Communion, Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick available at any time of the day or night. This Sacrament can be administered more than once. Sick and Housebound If a member of your family or a friend is housebound or admitted to hospital and would like a visit from the Priest, please contact him. Holy Communion can be brought regularly to the sick and housebound in their homes helping to keep them connected with the parish community.

.

The Sacraments are Jesus’ chosen way of gifting his life of grace to us for all times

Finance

Interim Finance Team Claire O’Brien, May Gillies, Robert Bon, John Coll The main aim is to support , advise and guide the Parish Priest in his management of the financial affairs of the parish. The committee ensures that proper accounting records are kept and submitted annually to the Diocesan offices. Gift Aid Scheme Claire O’Brien This is a successful scheme whereby our Church can reclaim tax that has been paid by the tax payer. If you are a tax payer your offering to the Church can be donated through Gift Aid which would mean the parish can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give. This increases the offering at no extra cost to the taxpayer. Offertory Collection Counters May Gillies The teams of counters work on a rota basis after Sunday Mass opening the Gift Aid envelopes recording these, counting and totalling the offertory collection and arranging for banking the money. Each team works approximately one weekend each month. 100 Club Carole Roberts There is a monthly draw in the Parish and proceeds are used for church maintenance project. New members always welcome.

Ministry of Altar Servers

Alison Futers

Altar Servers play an important part in the Church’s Liturgy to assist the

priest during Mass, joining with the whole community. Young people who

have received their First Communion are welcome and training is given.

Children’s Liturgy

Mona Taylor

Children’s Liturgy is run by catechists who are willing to share their love

of God and the Mass with our young people. It is held in the

Neighbourhood Centre and our children are invited to explore the Gospel

of the day at a level that is easier for them to understand. Parents are very

welcome to stay with their child if they feel it would help them to settle.

The children gather in church at the start of Mass and the Priest presents

them with their own Liturgy Book. They then proceed to the centre to par-

ticipate in the Liturgy of the Word. The Gospel story is linked to an activity

such as art, drama or music. At the Presentation of the Gifts the children

rejoin the congregation.

Eucharistic Ministers

??

Ministers are commissioned to share in the distribution of Communion at

parish Masses and to take Holy Communion to the sick and housebound in

the parish.

A Brief History of St Joseph’s Church Traquair House was the hub of Roman Catholicism in the Borders after the Reformation. In due course priests based there were able to help estab-lish parish communities and encourage the building of more churches in the Borders with the help from generous benefactors and the sacrifices of the parishioners at that time. There are still connections today with Traquair House where a monthly Mass is said in the Chapel on a Thurs-day evening during the summer months.

On 30 July 1850 a group of about 200 people from all around the area attended Mass above a carpenter’s shop off Peebles High Street for the first time since the Reformation. Prior to this date they had used the private chapel at Traquair House near Innerleithen. Opening Notice For St Joseph's Church

History Continued Through the Ages

In 1882 a pipe organ was installed in the church by Father Clapperton, parish Priest from 1850 to 1882. In 1912 the organ was removed and transferred to St Columba’s, Edinburgh by Father McCartney despite protests from the parishioners who were informed that they had “nil to do with the business”. In 1971 there was a reordering of the sanctuary to comply with the directives of Vatican II. The altar, made of Greek Cipollino marble, was moved forward to allow the Priest to face the congregation while saying Mass. Around 1997 a major refurbishment of the church was undertaken by Father John Robinson who did much of the physical work himself. The rails were removed from the altar and the table reduced and lowered to form an ambo. The Baptismal Font was moved from the back of the church and placed at the side of the altar. The replacement pews were sourced from a church in Liverpool and carpeting was laid throughout the church. The Stations of the Cross, by the Alinari Brothers, were cleaned and restored and also the large crucifix of the San Domiano School was included. The improvements transformed the church to make the house of God more warm and welcoming.

St Joseph’s School In 1865 a Catholic School was established next to the church. The community had raised the funds for the building but could not meet the cost of a teacher and so the parish Priest, FatherClapperton undertook the task himself. This school served the parish and the whole of Peeblesshire until it moved in 1974 to the Halyrude School building in Old Church Road, near the Cross Kirk. In 2011 the school moved again to Rosetta Road, into the old Kingsland School building.

Today the building has taken on a new role and St Joseph’s Parish Neighbourhood Centre is used by both parishioners and members of the local community for a wide variety of purposes.
