HOUSE-KEEPINGAs you would all be aware the issue of parking has long been a problem here at St Joseph’s. The purchase of the blocks across the road has alleviated this a little and we soon hope to commence a long term solution to the problem. SCHOOL NEWSCATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEKThis week all Catholic Schools in SA have celebrated Catholic Education Week in a wide range of ways. We have chosen to work in with some existing structures, needs and happenings.

On Monday we held two sessions to launch our Quick Number program which we have developed to assist all our students in years Reception to Yr 3. The program has been designed to provide our students with the opportunity to improve their mental computation skills, improve their automaticity of number, build their confidence in the ability to use number. The presentation is available on our website.

This program has been several years in the making and we believe it will be life changing in its impact on many of our students. It has been overwhelmingly well received by the parents who attended our information sessions.

If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate in contacting myself, Michelle Edmondson, Jenny Faulkner, Frankie Sandow or Kym Carpenter.

Every student in Reception to Year 3 will be given a pack of 30 flash cards which have been allocated via pre-testing. Whilst they may seem easy, the program is designed to have the children respond automatically to the flash card; e.g. Yr 3 should aim for 30 cards in 1 minute.

We ask that these be done each night, approximately 2 mins work in total. Each pack has the instructions written inside the recording folder. We hope to be in a position to release this program to Years 4-7 over the next term or two.

As mentioned, this has been launched on a Reception - Yr 3 program. It is our goal to introduce this across the whole school.

To continue our Catholic Education Week celebrations, on Friday, we will combine our normal Walk to School Activity with the opportunity to gather and share a breakfast. At noon there will be a Whole School Mass - all the details for these events are on the invitation that was sent home or alternatively you can visit our website.

RESPECTCurrently our staff are investigating, unpacking and working on ways the word “Respect” can be better taught and understood by our students.

• Respect of self• Respect of others• Respect of our environment

Over the coming weeks and months we want to share with you the outcomes and resulting actions we would like to incorporate into our current school practices.

REMINDERSFUNDRAISING LUNCHEONThank you to those families that have returned their forms and have offered their services for next week’s fundraising luncheon for the 4WD Variety Bash, Friday 27 May.

If you haven’t returned your form and you are able to assist in any way, we would greatly appreciate your help with making soup, pastries, or donations.

Please return your form to the front office by Friday this week. Thank you.

SCHOOL FETEThere is a Fete Meeting scheduled for Thursday 26 May at 9am in the Staff Room. All welcome to attend.

CONGRATULATIONSTwo of our students have recently achieved amazing sporting successes. James Stockman has gained selection in the South Australian Swimming Team which will compete in Darwin in September. James has been selected to swim in backstroke and breaststroke. James’ selection is a result of his great results in the SAPSASA State Country Championship. Matilda Maitland has been selected in the Girls State Under 12 cricket squad. Matilda has attended 3 training selections and has advanced to the next level. She will continue to train until October when the final team will be announced to play in Canberra in January. Fantastic effort as she is only 10 years old.

God Bless, Peter Shearer

SCHOOL NEWS

The history of the ‘Community Dinner’ is that it has been organised and hosted by our Yr 7 familes, with a percentage of the funds raised going to assist them in sending their children to Canberra as part of the Civics and Citizenship education program. Our 2016 Yr 7 parent group has been meeting fortnightly and has already raised over $12,500 via wood chops - personally this has been a very satisfying process as I have been able to work with the Yr 7’s, their parent and grandparents.

As a result of their hard work the percentage of the money raised at the Community Dinner, again through their hard work and orgnaisation, will this year be less than 50% - therefore raising significant funds for the school community which will be used to support our upcoming major redevelopments of the grounds and facilities and also the purchase of new interactive boards (three already have been purchased in Year 1, 5 & 6 classrooms).

As is the case every year the Year 7s, as the organising group, have been given first option to sell/purchase tickets/tables. Their response has been outstanding and at this stage all tickets have been allocated. To sell out is always an organisers dream but we understand that this may disappoint parents who wanted to attend. To this end we will establish a waiting list for those who would like to attend and allocate tickets if and when they become available - please fill in the attached form. We will also need to investigate whether we need a larger venue for future functions to avoid this issue. However we still welcome your support via the Community Dinner Auction.

Donated items often raise substantial dollars, therefore any contribution you can make is worthwhile. To be honest, we make several thousand dollars from this part of the evening.

Below are some ideas which may help you determine whether you have something you can offer. Personally, I have very few skills which will be of much use to anyone, so each year I donate a dozen wines for the benefit of the school. I hope people enjoy my wine and as a result purchase some from me. Both the school and I win from the donation.

Other donated items in the past have included: • Magnums of Wine / Cartons of wine / Cartons of Beer • Building materials • Books • Pamper packs • Vouchers for services (Fuel / Cleaning / Babysitting / Ironing) • Accommodation package at holiday house • Dinner party for 8-10 people • Framed Port Power / Crows Guernsey (signed by players)

If you donate a carton of beer (for example), I can triple the value of your donation by selling it for three times its cost. (Buy a carton for $40, we sell at $5/bottle = $120 raised). The real value for the school is that all dollars raised are put directly to use for our students. Everyone’s a winner!

Enclosed with this Newsletter is a form to join the wait list for tickets and /or to donate items for the silent auction. Please return this to the front office. Thank you.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

WHOLE SCHOOL MASSA whole school Mass will be held this Friday May 20 to celebrate the end of Catholic Education Week. This Mass will provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate our school’s Catholic Identity.

This Mass will be held at 12pm and we strongly encourage parents and friends to come along and celebrate with us.

YEAR 3/4 CLASS MASSThe Year 3/4 Class have been busy preparing for their Class Mass. The children have spent time in the classroom looking at forgiveness. They have looked at a number of Gospel stories which show how God loves us and forgives us of our sins. The parents and families of these children are encouraged to come along and support their children as they continue on their faith journey. The Mass will be held at 12pm in St Michael’s Church, Clare.

RECONCILIATION CELEBRATIONOn Thursday 26 May, 6.30pm, 14 Students will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. Please keep the following students in your prayers:Celeste Allison, Fred Barry, Imogen Hawker, Cowan Jaeschke, Samuel Lehmann, Scarlett Liebelt-Seymon, Imogen Nitschke, Hudson Rogers, Angus Ruddenklau, Jack Slattery, Amelie Smith, Annabelle Smith, Evelyn Tilley and Charlie Tonkin.

WHY DO CATHOLICS CELEBRATE RECONCILIATION?Why go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation? People sometimes ask. Isn’t it enough to say sorry to God in my heart? The Catholic approach to Reconciliation is deeply community-oriented. For us, sin is never a private affair. When one member of the body of Christ hurts, the whole body suffers. Imagine a husband and wife who harshly criticise each other. They can regret their words and say sorry to God. But for the forgiveness of God to really take effect in their marriage, they also need to reconcile with one another. Similarly, in Reconciliation we offer a public sign to our faith community that we are sorry for the ways we have undermined the unity of the Church and that we desire to renew our relationship with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

A vital life skill is theability to speak aboutemotional issues rather thanbottle feelings up or lash outat others.

If children and young peopleare to talk openly about theirfeelings then they need thespace and the vocabulary todo so. It helps toacknowledge kids when theyfeel sad, angry or scared andtreat such feelings as healthyand normal.

Children sometimes needassistance to find the wordsto describe their feelings. Thesimple act of giving emotionsa name can help childrencontain and recover fromtroubled feelings. Sometimesit helps to write down oreven draw how they arefeeling.

Children need to understandthat all sorts of feelings areacceptable and can bespoken about but not allbehaviours are permissible. Itis okay to be angry but it isnot okay to hit a sibling or

act destructively. Childrenneed to learn that theirfeelings are not the problem, but some actions are.

Children don’t always haveto talk about their feelings.Boys, in particular, will oftenretreat to their bedrooms (itis a throw-back to thecaveman days) when theyfeel upset, angry or sad. Butthey will often open up whenthey are ready.

It helps when parents modelhealthy ways of dealing withfeelings and createpsychologically safeenvironments so children andyoung people are more likelyto talk freely and seek helpabout those feelings thatmaybe troubling them.

LEGO EV3 Robotics Year 7 ‘STEM’ Incorporating Science, Technologies (Digital Technologies and Design & Technologies), English and Mathematics In STEM classes, Mrs Ackland presents a series of challenges drawn from real-life problems for us to solve through operation of a LEGO EV3 Robot. In our groups of 3, we must use skills in collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving and computational thinking (to name a few) to deconstruct the problem, plan an algorithm and build the program to control our robot and solve the challenge.

So far, challenges have included programming our robots to move in a variety of directions, including pivots and reverse, move an object to a specific location (within 5mm of ‘X marks the spot!’), stop at particular distances and trace a certain course.

This week we attached a colour sensor and had to create an algorithm to make our robot recognize and stop only when it encountered a particular coloured line. This knowledge will allow us to program the robot to move within a safe space and avoid, for example, falling off the edge of a table…a challenge Mrs A has planned! Similar techniques are used in the real world, to enable a tractor to stay within a paddock whilst seeding, machines to sort items based on colour, robots to clean up chemical spills, and NASA robots to explore Mars without falling in to a crater!

The Year 7s have

enjoyed exploring

the fantastically fun world of

Robotics through ‘playing’

with LEGO EV3 robots.

pottery classes, a soy sauce factory visit and more! We all thought this was the most special part of the trip.

It was sad to say goodbye to our homestay families, but the second week was just as exciting, travelling to some ‘famous’ Japanese cities such as Hiroshima and To-kyo.

We became very good at managing the subway, tram and bus systems, using Jap-anese ATMs and ticket vend-ing machines, operat-ing the sometimes confusing Japanese bathrooms, and sleeping in tiny motel beds! We tried a large variety of Japanese foods (on many little plates of all shapes and sizes) - some were delicious w h i l e o t h e r s were...interesting!

A few highlights of the trip were:

Our homestays with wel-coming and caring Japa-nese families.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and muse-um on Anzac Day where we placed our origami cranes at the Children’s

On the 15th of April, we went with a group of 11 chil-dren and 7 adults to Japan, as part of the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council ex-change.

Following the success of Year 7 families hosting Japanese students last year, this was the first year the council extended the exchange to Year 7 stu-dents (previously only open to Year 8-12). We had a great group of independent and enthusiastic trav-ellers, some of whom had not travelled overseas be-fore.

In the first week, we en-joyed the experience of staying with a Japanese family. It was interesting to learn their way of life and experience such things as sleeping on futons, eating an unusual variety of foods for breakfast, wearing spe-cial slippers in the toilet, and seeing family shrines set up in the house. We were shocked by how late the children went to bed!

Our homestay schedule was jam-packed but very enjoy-able - making udon noodles,

Peace Monument and had a 1-minute silence.

A fun night at Tokyo Disneyland!

“It was hard to stop using Japanese when we got home. The words become part of your vocabulary for a while.” Clodagh Barry

“The Japanese people were so accommodating. It was easy as we got used to the phrases they would say.” Chelsea Duke

“It’s just great to learn anoth-er language and get to use it! It will help my Japanese at school.” Erin O’Dea

ANY QUESTIONS, ROSTER CHANGES OR FEEDBACK, PLEASE CALL: ALEXIS MARDELL ~ 0421 928 724

Families should have received a survey from the Canteen Committee on Thursday the 12th of May asking for your feedback in relation to the proposal of St Joseph’s using online ordering for Canteen orders.

As this survey will be taken to the P & F to inform a decision, we ask that you please be diligent in providing your feedback and returning your survey to the office no later than Friday the 20th of May. Currently we have received 33% of families’ surveys: thank you to those families.

Following the printing of the survey, we were informed that some minor changes were made to the pricing structure. As a result, the surveys were sent out with out-of-date information. We apologise for this however it was out of our control. Please see below for the amendments.

Orders can be telephoned in – 7am-6pm AEST Mon-Fr.

Cost per student per recess or lunch order is 25 cents until the end of 2016 if we sign up before June 1st, otherwise it will change to 29 cents. (This covers the cost of the phone service to families to place orders and offer support, running costs of the website, the labels the Canteen will use to distribute orders and the transaction fees the company incurs).

Cost to top up account from a credit card or PayPal is 15 cents plus 1% of amount topped up. E.g. if you top up with $100 the fee would be $1.15. ($0.00 if direct debit: see s)

If you require another copy of this survey, please visit the front office where a number of extra copies are located on the front office bench.

On another note: the pricelist has the donuts listed as “small”. This is in keeping with the sizes on offer at The Little Red Grape where we purchase our delicious and freshly baked goods. We order the smaller of the two sizes, thus the term “small” has been used, however their size is actually quite generous. On a number of occasions we have noticed some students ordering two donuts at a time. This is of course up to families to decide what is appropriate for them. If you would like more information about portion sizes of any Canteen items or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact Alexis Mardell – 0421 928 724 and she can discuss this with you further.

We look forward to hearing your feedback. - The Canteen Committee.
