Sunday 23rd March

“SUPERBE”!Great HallThe Great Hall within St George’s will again be filled with live classical music in the second concert of the series for Organ and Orchestra.

The refurbishment of the famous Willis organ and its 7,737 pipes means that after a gap of many years it can be heard once more in some of the best works written for organ and live orchestra.

St George’s Hall now hosts its own Orchestra-in-Residence (Orchestra dell’Arte) who this season are bringing you three concerts under the musical direction of their conductor Edward Peak. Edward is well known to music lovers in our area from his career with the RLPO and the BBC.

Following the wonderful Elgar Heritage Concert last November our own great organist, Prof. Ian Tracey, will be the soloist on 23rd March in “Superbe”, an evening of music from France. Ian will play the inspiring concerto with strings and timpani by Poulenc and also the majestic Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 (the Organ). Excerpts from Massenet’s Le Cid will complete this programme. Ian has previously commercially recorded both these organ pieces but is delighted to be performing them live on this famous Willis organ in St George’s Hall. This is an evening not to be missed!

Saturday 5th April

Atos TrioConcert RoomJosef Suk Piano Trio in C minor, Op.2 Smetana Piano Trio in G minor, Op.15 Dvorák Piano Trio in F minor, Op.65

Grounded in the great German tradition, the ATOS Trio acknowledges no boundaries but the notes on the page. No matter how many international awards they win – and how often they’re compared to the Beaux Arts Trio – they remain true to the music they play and their own mission to communicate.

Tonight’s programme finds them in Bohemia’s woods and meadows, with three very different, yet equally emotional, personal confessions from three great Czech masters; music to pierce the heart, delivered with a new urgency.

Please note this concert is being recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

St George’s Hall Organ AppealThe Willis Organ was designed and built in Liverpool between 1851 and 1855 by ‘Father’ Henry Willis I, often referred to as the ‘greatest organ builder of the day’. The design broke new ground tonally and technologically for it to be named as the finest organ in the country at that time and still remains the third largest in the UK today. The organ has since suffered from damage to the Hall during the war and a period when it was dismantled and stored in the basement. Since 1980 the organ has been undergoing renovation work.

Support is now required for continuing restoration work to allow for the final stages of cleaning and repair requirements. All donations big or small are greatly appreciated and will help ensure future enjoyment of the organ for generations to come.

The Willis organ has recently benefited from a £50,000 investment from Liverpool City Council and the Trustees of St George’s Hall which is bringing back into use some of the pipes and stops that have not worked for some time.

How to donate: Donations can be made by cheque made payable to St George’s Hall Charitable Trust Organ Appeal and sent to St George’s Hall Organ Appeal, St George’s Hall Liverpool L1 1JJ. Please complete the form on page 55.
