The Autumn season opens with a very special recital by acclaimed pianist Lang Lang (9 Sep), who has inspired millions of children across China to take up the piano. An Ambassador for the Leeds International Piano Competition,Lang Lang visits Leeds as we host the finals ofthe 2015 competition (11 & 12 Sep).

Another classical highlight, the 2015/16 Leeds International Orchestral Season opens with one of the greatest works of the twentieth century, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, performed by the Basel Symphony Orchestra (26 Sep),and we also welcome the Dresden Philharmonic (3 Oct), Flanders Symphony (31 Oct) and Prague Symphony Orchestra (28 Nov).

Town Hall ToursYou may know the outline of Leeds Town Hall and its tower from a thousand photos but there is another, hidden, secret side to the building. This tour is your chance to stand at the dock where prisoners once stood, sit at the judge’s bench of the Borough Court, descend the stone steps into the dark prison cells below and climb the 203 steps to the top of the clock tower to see the clock itself whilst taking in a view of Leeds unlike any other.

Jake ShimabukuroWe are pleased to welcome Jake Shimabukuro on his first ever UK Tour. Known for his energetic strumming on the ukulele, Jake’s performance incorporates elements of thoughtful, sophisticated arrangements to spontaneous, improvised passages. Leeds International Concert Season’s popular Lunchtime Organ Series takes place most Mondays from mid-September to April at Leeds Town Hall.

Les Six is the name given to a group of six French composers formed in 1920: Auric, Durey, Honegger, Milhaud, Poulenc and Tailleferre. They worked on only five compositions collaboratively, one of which was Marriage at the Eiffel Tower, composed in 1921 for Cocteau’s ballet. The piece was originally given to Auric to write but as he was slow in his work, Cocteau split it into ten parts for the rest of the group to contribute.

Stravinsky completed The Rite of Spring in 1913 for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, only for the premiere to become infamous due to the rioting audience which deafened the orchestra and left the dancers in great difficulty. Whilst Debussy struggled to calm the audience, Ravel simply shouted ‘Genius!’ at the top of his voice. Expect dissonance, disjointed rhythms and a spectacularly large orchestra. ‘I saw in my imagination a solemn pagan rite. Sage elders, seated in a circle, watched a young girl dance herself to death. They were sacrificing her to propitiate the God of Spring. I heard and I wrote what I heard.’

Beethoven’s Eroica (Heroic) Symphony was a massively significant work both for the composer and for classical music. Completed in 1805, it marked the beginnings of early Romantic composition and an end to composition in the 18th Century Classical style, being much more emotionally expressive and, as a result, substantially longer than the typical Classical symphony.

Listen out for the vast emotional range of the second movement, from funeral march to joyous melody, and for the hunting calls of the three horns in the third movement. Excerpts from Eroica were used in the soundtrack to the 2011 film The Green Hornet and Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

Brighouse & Rastrick Band2014 holder of the Yorkshire Regional Champion’s title, Brighouse & Rastrick is regarded by many as the best and most consistent ‘public subscription band’ in the world.

Vaughan Williams’ first symphony was written for George Butterworth in 1913: ‘We were talking... when he said...: ‘You know, you ought to write a symphony’. I answered... that I’d never written a symphony and never intended to... I suppose Butterworth’s words stung me..., I looked out some sketches I had made for... a symphonic poem about London and decided to throw it into symphonic form... From that moment, the idea of a symphony dominated my mind. I showed the sketches to George bit by bit... and it was then that I realised that he possessed in common with very few composers a wonderful power of criticism of other men’s work and insight into their ideas and motives. I can never feel too grateful to him for all he did for me over this work...’

Listen out for the Westminster chimes played by the harp in the opening movement, moving on to a quick, loud section featuring wind and brass, representing ‘Hampstead Heath on an August Bank Holiday Monday’. In the second, slow movement, muted strings portray ‘Bloomsbury Square on a November afternoon’, and the third, quick movement was inspired by Westminster Embankment at night.

After a highly successful two years of touring worldwide with the Genesis Revisited and Extended shows, former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett is returning to Europe to perform with his band.

In celebration of his new album Wolflight released in 2015, and the 40th anniversary of the release of his first solo album Voyage of the Acolyte, Steve brings to us a unique show of both Hackett solo and Genesis classics. Along with the superb pieces such as Ace of Wands, Spectral Mornings and a selection from Wolflight, Steve will conclude his two and a half hour show with yet more Genesis material. Epic songs like Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, The Cinema Show , Can-Utility, Hairless Heart and The Musical Box will be part of this spectacular tour. It will be for many, the total experience, spanning Steve’s prolific output from early Genesis days to today.

Musicians playing with Steve will be Roger King, keyboards; Gary O’Toole, drums and percussion; Rob Townsend, saxes and flutes, Roine Stolt, bass and guitars and Nad Sylvan on vocals.

There is a sense of musical adventure, an impulse to reach new heights and depths in music where the unspoken aim is that the band and the audience become one and the world becomes a different place for a while.

Hothouse Flowers are a rock ‘n’ roll band. Hothouse Flowers are a traditional band. Hothouse Flowers are a soul band. Hothouse Flowers are a jam band with their own homemade jam spread into all corners of the bread!

Despite the band’s lengthy career, which is now heading into its fourth decade, there is a sense of unfinished business. Every night they want to play the best gig they have ever played and take the musical risks that can maybe make that possible. There are still songs to be written and emotions to share. Whether it’s in a tiny club, an arena or in a festival field there is a sense that the best is yet to come.

Strauss wrote Don Juan aged just 24, inspired by an unfinished play from the pen of poet Lenau. He tells the tale of a lothario whose constant search for the ideal woman takes him ‘beyond good and evil’. As his eternal search continues, Don Juan eventually wills himself to die and in Lenau’s version it is losing a duel which takes him to the grave. This was a ground-breaking piece that established Strauss internationally as a composer and it is extremely challenging for the performers. Listen out for the opening energetic brass section and the romantic solos of the violin and the oboe, followed by a heroic horn theme.

Dvorak’s Symphony No 8 was written in just ten weeks and displays strong folk influences. Look out for the piccolo which plays only once in the whole work, during the first movement. In the second movement listen out for the clarinet duet, enjoy the waltz of the third movement and in the fourth, the trumpet fanfare.

We open the concert with Vaughan Wiliams’ haunting and breathtakingly beautiful tribute to Thomas Tallis, known as the ‘father of English music’. His fabulous Fantasia links the music of the reigns of the two Elizabeths and was commissioned for the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester. At the premiere it was described by one critic as ‘a queer, mad work by an odd fellow from Chelsea’. The piece has featured in a number of films including Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) with Russell Crowe and Troy (2004).

Written ten years earlier, Elgar’s Enigma Variations helped to put Britain on the musical map in Europe, allowing other British composers such as Vaughan Williams to make more headway. Consisting of fourteen variations of a single theme, the first thirteen are tributes to different friends of Elgar with the finale depicting the composer himself.

The ‘Great’ G minor Symphony is one of only two symphonies by Mozart for which he chose a minor key. Written in just a few weeks, alongside symphonies 39 and 41, Symphony No 40 has an instantly recognisable theme in the first movement and is notable for the lack of parts for trumpets and timpani.

Mozart was commissioned to write the Requiem for an anonymous person, now known to be Count von Walsegg, who wished to claim it was his work in honour of his recently deceased wife. However, Mozart was ill when he started the composition and the stress of the enormous amount of work took him to his grave aged just 35, leaving his student, Süssmayr, to finish it off using rough harmonic and melodic guides. Only the opening movement was fully complete at the time of Mozart’s death, leading many musicologists to speculate on how much of it was actually from his pen. However intriguing the mysteries, the actuality of this most human of Requiems in all its beauty and terror remains a wonder to behold when encountered live.

Franz Clement, soloist at the premiere of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, was only shown the music for the first time just before the performance. As such, it was said that he was so unprepared that between the first two movements he played one of his own compositions using just one string and holding the violin upside down! Listen out for the four-beat theme of the first movement, which begins on percussion and lasts over twenty minutes.

Sibelius was influenced by Tchaikovsky and Bruckner when he wrote his first symphony at the age of 33, in 1899. Most notable is the use of solo pieces within the symphony. In the opening movement there is a long clarinet solo accompanied by percussion and there are further solos from the violin, viola and cello.

Folk rock pioneers Steeleye Span are touring with a new live show. Maddy Prior – the voice of the band – leads a line-up featuring faces old and new.

2014 saw Steeleye Span embarking on a new exciting chapter. With the departure of fiddle player and long-standing member Peter Knight the band introduced Jessie May Smart, a young vibrant talent.

2014 also saw the release of a deluxe version of their album Wintersmith in collaboration with Sir Terry Pratchett with an extra CD including four new studio tracks. Prior to writing his Concerto for Orchestra, Lutosławski composed several folk-inspired works for smaller ensembles. In the 1950s he decided to write an extended piece for the orchestra, dedicating it to the Artistic Director of the Warsaw Philharmonic. Having changed his compositional style greatly in the 1960s era of minimalism, Lutosławski later commented, ‘I do not like this work of mine very much but apparently it has preserved some freshness’. Listen out for the opening stamping chords and repeated drum rhythm of the first movement, the bowed and then pizzicato strings of the second movement and the solemn finale featuring the double basses.

Whilst double bass features are rarely heard in orchestral music, Mahler’s first symphony is another work which brings this instrument to the fore. Mahler based this solo, during the third movement, on the tune of Frères Jacques. However, he changed the key from major to minor and it is performed in the style of a funeral march – quite different to the original!

Famously down to earth, for over twenty years Kate’s engaging personality and sharp Yorkshire wit have further endeared her to concert goers everywhere.

And it is in her special Christmas concerts that all these elements combine to exquisite effect. Indeed, after fifteen years of enchanting audiences up and down the land, Kate’s Christmas tour – so wondrously captured on her 2013 Live At Christmas concert DVD –has, for many, become as much a part of the festivities as Christmas pudding itself! Warm and inviting, spicy and sparkly, she and her marvellous band – joined as ever by a sublime brass quintet – embody the sounds and joyous spirit of the best Christmases ever!

The key word here is, of course, ‘joy’. For, with her Christmas concerts, Kate is embracing and sharing a local South Yorkshire tradition of which she’s been a part ever since she was a child. For over two hundred years from late November to New Year’s Day on Sunday lunchtimes, the good folk of South Yorkshire

and North Derbyshire have flocked to their local public houses to sing their own, unique variations of familiar carols that, as Kate says, ‘were kicked out of churches during the Victorian era for being too happy!’ (And we might add too exuberant!)

By the time Kate embarks on this year’s festive tour she will have released her third album of songs from this marvellous Yorkshire-inspired tradition and in concert will, of course, be performing tunes from all three releases together with selections from her latest, critically acclaimed album, Ghost.

Hugely spirited but undoubtedly family affairs, Kate’s concerts celebrate what makes Christmas so special and so much fun as she and her fellow musicians perform fabulous songs brimful of the goodwill and spirituality of the season and in doing so put smiles on faces and joy in our hearts.

For ever proud to call herself a folk singer, Kate Rusby’s beautiful, expressive vocals never fail to connect the emotional heart of a song to that of her audience.

Car ParkThe nearest secure parking is available at The Light (accessible via Great George Street).Price: £7 between 6pm – 9am24 hour, 7 days a week parking available at Woodhouse Lane car park.Price: £2 for 2 hours, £4 for 4 hours,£5.50 for 12 hoursOn street parking is charged at £2 after 6pm.
