several of their wives, who cooked, served, set up and tore down after the festivities. More will come on this event later in the newsletter.

Brother Glenn then reminded us of the Confirmation at Seton on May 21st with the Bishop and encouraged all 4th Degree Members to dress in regalia and escort the candidates and Bishop. Finally, he reminded all of our first Car Cruise-In to be held on June 13th!

Treasurer Report: Brother Frank Hare then ran the numbers for Mike Phillips…who magically appeared immediately after the reading was complete…and we find that we are still financially sound.

Financial Secretary Report: Brother Frank Hare read our bills. He then declared out Membership at 254 strong with the seven new members still being processed. The bills were motioned to be sent to the trustees for review and initialing, voted upon, passed, and then delivered and paid.

Report of the Trustees: Elections will run under new business. The Trustees also proclaimed the Blue coat Dinner an awesome event…and presented the Council with an Award of Recognition given to our Council by the Fire Fighters! We hope to post this near our Council Charter. The Trustees did question the payment of $99.00 to the State for use of their site. We intend to investigate as to whether this site is necessary for us to submit our forms.

Special Motion and Celebration! The meeting was then briefly halted as the Council presented Deacon Hector with a cake and a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to celebrate that upcoming event for him! Cake at the meeting! See what you non-attendees are missing?

Chancellor’s Report: No Report.

Recorders Report: No Report.

Report on Programs and Committees:

Membership Committee Report: Brother Mike Sillings announced that we will have eight new members to go through the First Degree and hope to get them to Gahanna for their next cere-mony. Our crew will not be able to run a degree in May as several of the team is not available.

Program Director: No report, but reportedly we are totally complete with entries for the year! Great job, Brother Petersen.

Church Director: Brother Wayne Patterson mentioned that he still needs to talk to Father about collecting donations for our seminarians after Masses. He also mentioned the Chalices for Father are ordered and a sample should be ready for approval soon. He the reminded us of the upcoming events:

May 18 2nd and 3rd degree ceremony at Saint Andrews - We are taking at least one candidate

May 21 Confirmation Mass with the Bishop - please be there by 6:30PM

May 25 40th Anniversary Mass at St. Pius in honor of Msgr. Funk - set up time at 11:00AM. The Mass begins at noon.

And finally…the chalices are on the way! We hope to have them in house for the Confirmation.

Business Meeting Notes - May 14, 2014

We convened at 7:30, but not with the official start of Council proceedings. Glenn Williams, standing in as Grand Knight for the tripping George Schneider, had the pleasure of awarding our Council scholarships to two deserving youth! The first recipient was Jacob Thompson, son of Brian and Robin Thompson, and a soon to be junior at Bishop Hartley High. He is an altar server as well as a Eucharistic Minister at Seton, is a newsletter publisher, and is active in soccer at school. The second recipient was Tara Bowie, daughter of Tim and Tina Bowie, who will begin her career at Bishop Hartley in the fall. She is active in choir, SPY Leadership, our upcoming Youth Rally and has been on our trips to serve those in Portsmouth and has attended several March for Life Trips. Both of these young Catholics are greatly deserving of the scholarships bestowed. Please take time to congratulate them when you see them at church … and their parents too!

The Scholarship recipients were sent happily on their way and the regular meeting was called to order at 7:30 by Deputy Grand Knight Glenn Williams.

Roll Call of Officers:

All were present with the exception of our Inside Guard, Warden, Advocate, and Trustee 3 Year who were absent and excused. Our Treasurer was a tad tardy…but made it in shortly after commencement.

The minutes of the last meeting were motioned for approval by Wayne Patterson, seconded by Edd Chinnock, voted on and passed.

Chaplain’s Report: Deacon Hector had a short report and asked us to remember to congratulate Father Klima on his anniversary into the priesthood coming up this week. He then sadly brought up the incident of the tragic murder of Danielle Geise’s husband Mike and asked us to consider donations to the family in support. The good Deacon then used that to remind us to “be prepared”, because death will come to us all - though we know not where, nor when, nor how. He concluded by thanking us all for what we do as Knights.

Membership and Reading of Applications:

We then read and approved after motion of acceptance by Wayne Patterson and a second by Tim Bowie - seven applications for Knighthood to our Council and Order! The applicants were Mark Yates, Tony Goddard, Frank Hannah, Michael Kohar, Tim Cunningham, Zachariah Douglas and Juan Carlos Morales! Thanks to Mike Sillings for his wonderful job as Membership Chairman and to those reaching out to others to become Knights! Harry Clyburn and Mike himself are both very strong here!

Grand Knight’s Report: Acting G.K. Glenn Williams then conducted a report listing the following:

He proudly reminded us of the canonization of Pope John Paul II and John the XXIII into sainthood and the ordination of our own Brian O’Connor as a Transitional Deacon!

Brother Glenn next proclaimed the Blue Coat dinner as a success, but lamented the lack of attendance by our brother Knights. He proceeded to thank those brothers who attended and served the event…especially Ron Blymire and Fred Barwick who organized the evening and Dick Petersen, Mike Elston, Frank Hare, John Letourneau, Stephen Malott, Rusty Boehm and undoubtedly

Council Director: Brother Glenn Williams proclaimed that our “Of the Year” award winners will be given their awards at next month’s meeting.

Community Director: Brother Thom Laughery stated that he will be placing an article in the paper regarding our Blue Coats Dinner. We next discussed the “Measure Up” campaign that we had not yet planned. We may still plan to stand and collect at the intersections and stores…or collect after a Sunday Mass…or use our Gimme Five donations instead.

Family Director: No report this month, but as Brother Ryan Anderson and wife just had a baby…his absence is forgiven. Note to other brothers…it is not a prerequisite of the position to have children when you are the Family Director. But, it is not discouraged either.

Youth Director: Brother Jesse Garcia mentioned the HS Retreat will be conducted this weekend and that planning for the June 13th Car Show is in full swing. Both the Squires and the SPY group will assist with food and beverage services!

Squires Report: Brother Mike Phillips stated the Squires look forward to assisting with the Car Show. He also mentioned their next main event will be their State Convention coming soon. He again concluded with the challenge to play the Knights in a softball game on June 8th at 2:00pm. Brother Glen Williams is still charged to “coach” the Knights and build us in to a contender.

Right to Life Director: Brother Edd Chinnock then reported that we still need people to assist in praying outside the Clinic on Hill Rd. He next mentioned another fund-raising dinner for the PDHC to be held at our own Parish Activity Center on May 22nd. Attend if you can. He also asked for participation in a “Jericho Walk” around the “clinic” on June 9th.

Report of Committees:

The only report was about our lack of participation in the State Bonanza Ticket Sales. The officers will discuss if our participation is to continue.

Unfinished Business: None - the fiscal year is coming to a close.

New Business:

MOTION: Brother Edd Chinnock motioned that the Council donate $XXXX (from RTL budget) towards the purchase of an ultrasound machine for the Franklinton PDHC. Wayne Patterson seconded. Discussion ensued and it was noted that over 90% of the women who see the child through an ultrasound…do not proceed with an abortion. The motion was voted upon and passed…with some dissention.

And as an added note…Brother Edd received a thank you from Gary Anderson…who was heading up this project…and was informed that our donation put them “over the top” for the purchase of the ultrasound machine! This is great news and our council can be proud of the part we played in getting this machine for PDHC to help save babies' lives.

Election of Officers: The following brothers were nominated for duties as Council 11187 Officer’s for next year. They were voted in by acclamation…with one dissenting vote…as there were no other nominations.

These officers are:

Remember…there are plenty of Director Positions to fill as well for next year. Please consider serving in one of these spots if asked! It takes many to keep our Council moving ahead!

Report of the Fourth Degree: The Exemplification was conducted on April 26th. We now have two new 4th Degree members! Thom Laughery and Jared Long have now gained that status. Congratulations, gentlemen. May 28th will be the next 4th Degree Meeting. The dinner menu is set for tacos and burritos. Please bring an appropriate side dish to share. All knights and wives are welcome.

Field Agent Report: No Report.

Brothers in Need: Please keep in your prayers Frank Sanderell, the Mike Obert family following Mike’s death, Ryan Schneider, Mary McComb, Jim and Margie Patterson, Maureen Patterson, Rick Krigbaum Maxine Krulia, Sarah Rigsby, the Delille family following the suicide of daughter Cora, and all of our military and priests.

Brother Tim Bowie then gave a quick Lecturer Report in a way…as he presented the tragic reason for Cora’s suicide as stemming from bullying! He asked that we talk to our children…talk to our grandchildren…and step in wherever we see this going on. Bullying must stop.

The meeting closed at 9:35 PM.

Respect Life: Father’s Day

I am writing this on the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of Midway (June 4, 1942) and two days before the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the June 6, 1944, invasion of Normandy. Both of these events were turning points of World War II.

Often called the “Miracle at Midway”, a small force of 3 American aircraft carriers with a few support ships defeated a much larger Japanese invasion fleet consisting of 4 large carriers, a battleship, and dozens of heavy cruisers, light cruisers, destroyers, and sup-port ships. The U.S. Navy sank all 4 of the enemy carriers with the loss of all of their planes and experienced pilots, a heavy cruiser, several smaller ships, and heavily damaged another heavy cruiser, with the loss of one U.S. carrier. The ships never saw each other - the entire battle was conducted by aircraft on both sides. Before this battle, the Japanese were on the offensive in all areas of the Pacific while the U.S. was on the defense. After this battle, the Japanese never mounted another major offensive attack. With 4 of their 6 main carriers gone and lacking the industrial capacity to build more, they could only attempt to defend the territory already conquered. The U.S. built about 30 aircraft carriers along with the planes and pilots they needed before the war ended.

The D-Day fleet was the largest armada ever assembled - over 5,000 ships and landing craft and the largest amphibious landing ever attempted. Once the beachhead was firmly established, Hitler’s Nazi Germany was on defense for the rest of the war, with the exception of the Battle of the Bulge, a brief but dangerous attack around Christmas, 1944. Again, the industrial might of the U.S. in turning out planes, tanks, trucks, guns, and ammunition overwhelmed the ability of Germany to keep up. Our brave soldiers endured one of the worst winters in European history to keep relentless pressure on Germany and Italy and defeat them in the end.

Father’s Day is just over a week away and we need to remember our fathers and grandfathers and the sacrifices they made for us. The “Greatest Generation” is dying off at the rate of about 1000 per day - if you know someone in this generation, take time to thank them for all they did to keep our world safe - and record their memories of the war. And while you are at it, thank all the veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and all our wars. Father’s Day reminds us of these brave men, but do not forget the women who served, as well as the ones back home who sacrificed so much to support the warriors. These are the brave people who gave us the freedoms we enjoy today!

FREEDOM ISN’T FREE! THEY PAID THE PRICE FOR US!

Edd Chinnock,

Council 11187 Respect Life coordinator

Field Agent’s Report

How many of us have heard someone belittle or put down life insurance in a financial plan. It's always good to be reminded what it can do for a client.

I AM A LIFE INSURANCE POLICY

I am a piece of paper, a drop of ink and a few pennies of premium.

I am a promise to pay.

I help people see visions, dream dreams, and achieve economic immortality.

I am education for the children.

I am savings.

I am property that increases in value from year to year.

I lend money when you need it most, with no questions asked.

I pay off mortgages, so that the family can remain together in their own homes.

I assure people the daring to live and the moral right to die.

I create money where none existed before.

I am the great emancipator from want.

I guarantee the continuity of business.

I conserve the employer’s investment.

I am tangible evidence that a man is a good husband and father, and a woman a good wife and mother.

I am a declaration of financial independence and economic freedom.

I am the difference between an old man or woman and an elderly gentleman or lady.

I provide cash if illness, injury, old age, or death cuts off the breadwinner’s income.

I am the only thing that you can buy on the installment plan that your family doesn’t have to finish paying for.

I am protected by laws that prevent creditors from assessing the money I give to your loved ones.

I bring dignity, peace of mind and security to your family.

I supply investment capital that makes the wheels turn and the motors hum.

I guarantee the financial ability to have happy holidays and the laughter of children - even though father or mother is not there.

I am the guardian angel of the home.

I am life insurance.

Marketing Agent Wanted

Council 11187 has received an exclusive franchise to market Easter magnets (He is Risen) and Christmas magnets (Keep Christ in Christmas) to other councils throughout Ohio. Similarly, the franchise allows our Council to sell to individuals at retail price.

The magnets have the potential to be a significant fund raiser not only for our Council but other Councils within Ohio and have been enthusiastically received where they are known. These mag-nets could also appeal to other religious affiliated groups, Catholic and non-Catholic, for their message value alone. Until now, the availability of these magnets to other groups has been, predominately, word of mouth. To achieve full potential, a plan to market and distribute (the physical distribution is already in-place) the magnets throughout the state is needed. There are a number of statewide periodicals, publications and other venues that could be incorporated into such a plan.

So, to that end, we're looking for someone to draft and implement a plan to market the magnets.

If you are someone who is creative, doesn't like to attend numerous meetings, likes to work at your pace and within your personal time constraints and time frames you have available, this is your opportunity to help the Council on your own terms.

If this opportunity appeals to you please contact me at [email protected] or if you'd like to discuss it further call at 614-837-5452.

Hello everyone,

Frank Hare

Kroger Community Rewards®

Giving More Back to the Community!

Kroger is committed to helping our communities grow and prosper. Year after year, local schools, churches and other nonprofit organizations will earn millions of dollars through Kroger Community Rewards®.

Kroger Community Rewards® makes fund-raising easy...all you have to do is shop at Kroger and swipe your Plus Card!

Great. Here's how you can help:

Visit www.krogercommunityrewards.com Sign in or Create an Account Fill in the required information and select the PCMA Food Pantry of Pickerington (organization #84679) as your preferred organization.

We will earn money for every dollar that you spend at Kroger. This will not affect your fuel points. Earlier this year, we received a check for over $400 and that was for the period of November 2013 - January 2014, with less than 30 families participating! Imagine what we can raise if more families sign up with the Community Rewards Program. We continue to serve over 150 families per month at the Food Pantry, please consider helping us with this. It's simple, all you have to do is use your Plus Card every time you shop. You can verify that you have signed up correctly by looking at the bottom of your receipt, it should list the PCMA Food Pantry as the Community Rewards recipient.

I will send occasional reminders, but you must re-enroll every April to continue earning money for the Pantry.

Also, please note that if you check out their weekly ad, they offer a digital coupon you can print on Fridays only and then use for a free product. If you don't like the product, you can always donate it to the Food Pantry.

D-Day June 6, 1944

On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolph Hitler’s crack troops. http://www.army.mil/d-day/
