“Thank You” to all of our volunteers!

Volunteers are essential to Meals on Wheels and the Sally Griffin Active Living Center. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities, so you can find one (or two!) that’s just right for you. Whether helping with sandwich and food preparation in the kitchen, greeting and assisting visitors at the front desk and inner office, working as a host for our noon lunches, conducting free classes and activities, decorating and helping with special events, driving for our home delivered meal program or something else, you’ll find fun, fellowship and the good feeling that comes with helping others. Join us today by contacting Cathleen Hughes at 831-375-4454 ext. 126

Women Who Care 2019

The Women Who Care is a network of philanthropic women (and the men who love them) whose fundraising efforts help to underwrite Meals on Wheels’ services for seniors and their caregivers across the Monterey Peninsula. In 2019, WWC will support Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula’s Senior Nutrition Services, to ensure that every homebound adult receives healthy food daily.

As part of the Women Who Care Kick-Off Luncheon, we honor one woman whose exemplary service to Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula and her community is inspirational. In 2019, we are delighted to recognize Dianne Bruno as our Woman of the Year. Dianne was selected as our Woman of the Year for her generous philanthropy and long support of Meals on Wheels.

Spanish Tortilla or Potato Omelet - Here’s a great way to use up some of those potatoes we’ve been getting at the MOW farmers market and you only need one pan and a few basic ingredients.

2 medium potatoes, in ½ inch cubes 3 T olive oil ½ onion, chopped 3 large eggs Salt and pepper to taste

Heat oil in a non- stick skillet. Add potatoes and cook until they are crispy and tender. Add onions and cook until they are transparent. Beat eggs with salt and pepper. Pour into pan and cook on medium heat. Move the eggs around the potatoes if they are not cooking evenly. When solidified, place a plate over the pan, flip the pan over so the tortilla is on the plate. Then slide it back into the pan and to finish cooking. Slide it back onto the plate, slice and serve either warm or at room temperature. Garnish with parsley or dill. Mary Zischke Food safety information - What about food in your refrigerator? Is it safe to use during an emergency? Perishable foods like leftovers, milk, deli meats, cheese should be used first! And remember to throw them out after 24 hours without refrigeration.

April 2019 FREE Monday Movies 1:00 – 3:00 pm

The movies shown at the Sally Griffin Center are rented through Netflix, and your suggestions for future movies are welcome.

April 1 – Loving Vincent - This animated biopic recounts the life and last days of tormented Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, with each frame of the film consisting of an oil painting executed in the master's style and a plot based on letters he penned. April 8 – LBJ - After taking the reins of state in the wake of President Kennedy's 1963 assassination, Lyndon Baines Johnson assumes leadership at one of the most tumultuous times in U.S. history. This engrossing biopic looks at the man behind the political mask. April 15 – It Happened One Night - Runaway socialite Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) is en route to the Big Apple to elope, and along the way, she meets a crusty newspaperman (Clark Gable). But a string of zany misadventures leads them to realize they're madly if reluctantly in love. April 22 – Darkest Hour - Winston Churchill's stirring defiance of the Nazi threat is the focus of this historical drama that depicts his fearless refusal to surrender Britain to Adolf Hitler and his relentless army during World War II's early days. April 29 – The Final Year - Enjoying rare access to Barack Obama and some of his top aides during the last year of his presidency, filmmaker Greg Barker captures the urgency of White House foreign policy experts as they hasten to cement Obama's global legacy. Agatha Christie’s Poirot - Thursdays at 1:00 pm A DVD special series starring David Suchet, as the impeccably turned out Belgian sleuth, set in the art deco elegance of 1930’s Europe. Based on the fiction of Dame Agatha Christie.
