Second Sunday in Ordinary Time - In today’s first reading, we hear Samuel respond eagerly, “Here I am!” each time the Lord calls him. May we, too be listening for the call of God in our lives and be ready to say like the Psalmist, “Here am I, Lord, I come to do your will.”

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 14, 2018

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR . . . We welcome Monsignor Ted Bertagni, who will speak this weekend about Cross Catholic Outreach. This is an opportunity to be generous with the poor in other parts of the world.

Next weekend, we will begin a 4-week reflection on the life of Stewardship. We will begin with an inspiring homily, encouraging everyone to be actively involved in the life of the Church. Then we will have two parishioners each week share a little one-minute reflection about their activity in a ministry. For anyone who might want to become more involved in the life of the parish, we hope to provide some ideas.

There is an ancient tradition in the Church of offering a Mass for a particular person or a particular intention. The Mass is our greatest prayer, and while it is offered for the salvation of the world, it can also be a prayer focused on a particular need. If a person would like to request a Mass offered for a particular intention, it is typical that a stipend would be offered for the priest who offers the Mass. The usual stipend in our diocese is $10. (While it is not the case here, in many times and places in the life of the Church, the Mass stipend has been the main source of income for a priest and the way he supports himself.) If you would like to have Masses offered for loved ones who have died, for a living person, or for a particular intention, please call or stop by the parish office. If you request, we will try to schedule Masses at a convenient time that you can attend.

We have received a very warm thank you letter from St. Patrick’s Food Bank. This food bank is serving people in a difficult part of the city, and the help of our parish has been vital. In our Advent Giving Tree collection, we donated 1620 pounds of food, toiletries and hygiene items, along with $150 in cash and gift cards. “Words seem inadequate to truly express our appreciation,” they wrote. Thank you.

Rekindle the Fire Catholic Men’s Group

Rekindle the Fire will meet on Wednesday, January 17, 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room off of the Gathering Space. Join men of the parish in prayer, conversation and fellowship.

ALL MEN ARE WELCOME !

JANUARY 14

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Come and See

† Reading I 1 Samuel 3.3-10,19

(Revelation to Samuel)

† Reading II 1 Corinthians 6.13-15,17-20

(Against sexual immorality)

† Gospel John 1.35-42

(The first disciples)

KEY PASSAGE: They said to him, “Rabbi”-which translated means Teacher - where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day.

Adult: What qualities do you have that would cause others to recognize you as a disciple of Jesus?

Child: What does it take to be a follower of Jesus?

Please welcome Rev. Msgr. Ted Bertagni who will speak at all Masses on behalf of Cross Catholic Outreach which was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in America and the priests and nuns working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central and South America. Please be generous in your response to Msgr.’s appeal. Brochures will be provided if you wish to support this worthy Catholic ministry.

SIGN UP NOW TO TAKE HOME THE ST. CHARLES VOCATION CROSS

Months of March & April

Sign-up book is located in the Gathering Space.

Each Sunday a family, couple, or individual will come forward during the Parish Vocation Prayer to receive the “Vocation Cross and A Special Book of Vocation Prayers” written for each day of the week. In taking the cross, they commit themselves to pray during the week to encourage more vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life. The Vocation Cross would need to be returned to the Sacristy before the following weekend’s Masses.

VOCATION CROSS PROGRAM Next weekend, January 20, Tom & Diane Keefer will take home the Vocation Cross. They will pray daily throughout the week for an increase in vocations.

ST. CHARLES VOCATION COMMITTEE

Speak Lord, your servant is listening. Listening to the Lord requires silence. Make time each day to be quiet, so that you can hear God’s call. (1 Samuel 3-10)

SCRIP NEWS

Brrrrrr! We have started this new year in the deep freeze. Hopefully, you are staying warm. This kind of weather makes me crave a good bowl of soup. If you don’t have the time to make one of your best soup recipes, stop by your favorite restaurant like Casa, Panera, Bob Evans, or Olive Garden, to name a few, and take a container of soup home. How about a tasty warm beverage from Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Tim Hortons, or McDonald’s? It’s a great time to take in a movie at the Regal Cinemas, AMC’S Carmike Theaters, or Cinema Grill. Do you enjoy watching the birds? Gift cards to Wild Birds Unlimited, Lowes, Menards or Home Depot can help you attract your feathered friends to your backyard. Whether you choose to embrace the weather and enjoy some of the seasonal activities, or

snuggle up with a good book and a warm drink, all of God’s seasons offer us different opportunities to marvel at His splendid creation!

It’s almost time - At the end of the month, we will begin the week-long celebration of Catholic schools. Be sure to continue to read the bulletin and school newsletter for how SCRIP, along with the rest of the parish, plans to celebrate our wonderful schools and the special gift of a Catholic education.

Weather Delays – It’s the time of year when we face the possibility of school delays. What does that mean for SCRIP? On Mondays – we will be in the SCRIP office as soon as we can safely travel there; school orders will be collected despite the delay, filled and returned by the end of the school day. If school is cancelled on Monday, school orders will be collected and filled on Tuesday. If there are delays on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays – we will be in the SCRIP office when it is safe to travel. On Fridays, SCRIP sales will follow the school delay with sales will taking place in the Hession Center from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 am. School orders will be collected and filled. If school is cancelled, SCRIP sales are cancelled as well.
