Why Do We Sing? A Progressive Participation

by Rev. Virgil C. Funk, a presbyter of the Diocese of

Richmond, Virginia and president emeritus of the

National Association of Pastoral Musicians

Progressing in Participation

Singing expresses our faith. As our faith deepens, we consciously express our faith through song in a more profound way. We “progress” in our singing. As Pope Benedict wrote “The musicification of faith is part of the process of the word becoming flesh.” That is to say, when faith is turned into music, that activity is part of the pro-cess of the incarnation, of God becoming enfleshed. Singing the Liturgy is a process; it is progressive.

A theologian-professor-musician-composer gave his three answers to my question this way:

“I sing the Liturgy because uniting text, melody, and ritual action yokes together and balances thought and feeling; the melody helps me to discover aspects of the texts I would know no other way, the text keeps me from just losing myself in engaging sound, and the ritual action keeps musical-textual events from be-coming purely aesthetic.

“I sing the Liturgy because by singing I’m united both to centuries of worshipers who have gone before me, all of whom left some mark from their culture and their engagement with the Gospel in the music they sang at Liturgy, and because I am also opened to future directions in Liturgy by singing new composi-tions in many languages and styles, all of which speak to me about how the Gospel is still vital, en-countering and transforming cultures even now.

“I sing the Liturgy because Jesus (think of Him chanting the Jewish Liturgy with His disciples and the “hymns He sang with them before going to the Garden of Gethsemane) and the Church (both through history and in its official guidelines and di-rectives) call me to do so under the direction of the Holy Spirit as a way of staying in communion with Christ and of exhibiting my membership in the Peo-ple of God.”

A religious sister who is also a theologian-professor-musician answered this way:

“I sing the Liturgy because I have sung since as long as I can remember. I have always been a person who sings.

”I sing the Liturgy because it enables me to enter into prayer more deeply.

“I sing the Liturgy because I believe in singing.”

The American bishops’ important and useful docu-ment Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship (STL), open with a wonderful chapter on “Why We Sing” (STL, 1-9). It presents a vision statement—an ideal to be striv-en for in the process or the progression of singing. To quote just one section:

Music is therefore a sign of God’s love for us and of our love for Him. In this sense, it is very personal. But unless music sounds, it is not mu-sic, and whenever it sounds, it is accessible to others. By its very nature song has both an indi-vidual and communal dimension. Thus, it is no wonder that singing together in church express-es so well the sacramental presence of God to His people (STL, 2).

As a practical conclusion to these thoughts, as we grow in faith, our musical participation also grows.

Prayer of the Week You've blessed me with friends and laughter and fun,

With rain that's as soft as the light from the sun. You've blessed me with the stars to brighten each night.

You've given me help to know wrong from right. You've given me so much, so please Lord give me, too,

A heart that is always grateful to You.

Joke of the Week A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph and Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem. A small child replied, “They couldn’t get a baby-sitter.”

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam’s ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and she said, “Johnny, what is the matter?” Little Johnny responded, “I have pain in my side. I think I’m going to have a wife.”

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!

A Holy Community through Holy Communion. Your Brother in Jesus,

From the Pastor’s Pen

Gospel Reflection Even though the crowd in today’s Gospel had enough faith in Jesus—whom they called Rabbi, or “Teacher”—that they got into boats and went to Capernaum looking for him, still they had that small kernel of doubt in who he was. Yet again, they asked him for a sign so that they might truly believe in him. Jesus basically tells them that the sign is in their midst, and has always been in their midst. For it was God who gave the bread from heaven to their ancestors in the desert, and it is God who gave them the true bread from heaven, Jesus himself, the Bread of Life.

A familiar phrase used by children and adults alike is, “Prove it to me.” In a sense, this is what the followers of Jesus are saying to him in today’s Gospel, “Prove it to us, Jesus. Give us a sign so that we might believe in you.” But the signs are all around us. God’s Word speaks to us of God’s love, compassion, presence, and care. Every day God sends signs through his works of creation, through the kind words of another, through the helpful hand given by a friend, or through the presence and the worship of the community of believers, the Church. We simply have to open our eyes and our hearts to the signs of God’s presence, including the Real Presence of Christ—Bread of Life and Cup of Salvation—given to us in the Eucharist.

As a family, take time to share where you have seen signs of God’s presence in recent days. Then use large unlined index cards or half pieces of construction or drawing pa-per, crayons or markers, popsicle sticks, and strong tape or glue to create mini hand-held signs. Invite family members to create one or more “Signs of God’s Pres-ence” by drawing the examples they have just named. Display the signs on your family prayer table, or in a large flower pot full of sand or gravel. You may wish to leave spare signs and art supplies near your display so that family members can create more signs as they see God’s presence throughout the coming week.

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treas-ure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

“Each day the people are to go out and gather their dai-ly portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they fol-low my instructions or not.” (Exodus 16:4)

When the Israelites gathered more than their daily por-tion of manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same way today, God calls us to be content with a fair portion and to be willing to share the rest.

We pray that we recognize the difference between what we need and what we want and trust that God has pro-vided us with enough to share.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!

What is the RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The Rite of Christian Initiation can be likened to the “making” of a new family member. As the new member grows into the particular ways of a family's living, the various members share their values, beliefs, and visions. In this interaction the family creates itself anew; it creates its own identity. This “making” necessarily in-volves not only the formation of a new member, but the formation of the family itself.

♦ Are you in search of a deeper relationship with God?

♦ Are you interested in learning about Christian initiation, Christianity, the Catholic Faith?

♦ Have you been attending the Catholic Church, Mass, for years but just never “gotten around” to joining?

♦ Would you like to be baptized?

St. Charles Borromeo offers an opportunity to help you answer these questions and more. We call it the RCIA, or the Right of Christian Initiation of Adults. It consists of:

Meeting with other inquirers to pray and share questions and concerns of faith within the confines of Christiani-ty.

An opportunity to share life's experiences and the time to reflect on them.

Learning about the tradition and history of the 2000 year old Catholic Church, while experiencing beliefs and worship.

Being connected to a community that worships together, seeks to serve others, and joins in fellowship.

To become Roman Catholic, you don’t have to be any certain age. People can join the Church at any age and time during their life. Conversion to Christ can't come to you by way of one person, it has to be from Jesus, the only one that can truly pierce a heart as the twelve apostles confirmed. Most members of the Roman Catholic Church are baptized as infants. They grew up in Roman Catholic homes, re-ceived some form of religious education and gradually came to share in the full sacramental life of the church with God, His Son Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Mary and all the Saints.

Others who were previously baptized in other Christian traditions become Catholics after making a solemn profes-sion of faith, receiving communion and sharing Eucharist with the Catholic community.

And still others -- those who were not previously baptized -- enter into a process that includes all three of the Sacra-ments of Initiation ...the RCIA.

RCIA is neither a program nor part of a Religious Education instructional course of study. It is a gradual process that takes place within the community of the faithful:

"From the time of the apostles, becoming a Christian has been accomplished by a journey and initia-tion in several stages. The apostles journeyed with Jesus for three years before they were rewarded with the last supper-Holy Communion and then Pentecost where they were given the Holy Spirit to guide them. This journey can be covered rapidly or slowly, but certain essential elements will always have to be present: proclamation of the Word, acceptance of the Gospel entailing conversion, profes-sion of faith, Baptism itself, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and admission to Eucharistic commun-ion with Mary, the Apostles and all the Saints. This initiation has varied greatly through the centuries according to circumstances. In the first centuries of the Church, Christian initiation saw considerable development. A long period of catechumenate included a series of preparatory rites, which were litur-gical landmarks along the path of catechumenal preparation and culminated in the celebration of the sacraments of Christian initiation." (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1229, 1230)

Please take a look and see if a CRHP book might be sitting on a shelf or laying un-der the bed. It would be greatly appreciated by the CRHP 12 teams to have books for the team members. Thanks! Continuation Committee, CRHP 12 Teams

St. Charles Borromeo Prayer Tree: 928-2970 or [email protected]

St. Patrick Casseroles St. Patrick’s Center helps individuals move from homelessness to independence, primarily through education and em-ployment programs. By serving in the St. Patrick’s casserole ministry you can make a positive change in the lives of less fortunate people by providing one casserole each month while they strive to get back on their feet.

Here’s how it works: Participants are assigned either the second or third Friday of each month to prepare a casserole. Pans and lids are furnished by the Center, and provided to participants. There is a designated recipe and each participant buys the ingredients, prepares the casserole, and then freezes it before bringing it to the church office. Your frozen casse-role is brought to the office any time during regular office hours, or on the Friday morning that they are to be delivered to the Center, between 7am and 8:30am. There is plenty of freezer space at the office. The casseroles are then collec-tively delivered to the Center in a van.

The casserole ministry always needs more people to make casseroles. Our parish has participated in this program since its inception more than 27 years ago! Contact: Mary Dean Glosier

With thanks from the Parish Council

The Gospel tells us “This is my beloved son. Listen to him.” By “listening” we are able to live the Gospel. Gospel living is some-thing so simple as taking the time to listen to those who need to spill out their hearts when seeking help.

Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you enable the members of the Society to become a “listening heart” to the hungry, the homeless and the struggling poor.

“LORD, MAKE ME AN INSTRUMENT OF YOUR PEACE.”

Join as we pray for peace, justice, and unity in our community, workplace,

churches, and homes.

The Bridges Retreat—A Retreat in Everyday Life Are you looking to deepen your relationship with God? The Spiritual Exercises are a set of prayers, meditations, and reflec-tions developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, to help people deepen their relationship with God. As

St. Ignatius grew closer to God, he developed a set of prayers, meditations and reflections to help others find God in their everyday lives. For centuries the Spiritual Exercises were most often experienced in exclusion over the course of 30 days. People still experience them through this format. However, most people today cannot leave their responsibilities to de-vote themselves to the 30 day format so Ignatius provided an alternative. The “Spiritual Exercises” are just that, exercises to build and strengthen your own experience of God, to help you reflect on God’s creative love and purpose in your life and to more deeply know Jesus, in the midst of your family and work responsibilities.

The Bridges Foundation, Inc. will sponsor an Information Session for those wishing to experience the Spiritual Exercises.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo!

Beyond Family is God “Kindred and helpers are for a time of trouble, but almsgiving rescues better than either.” Sirach 40:24

This chapter in the book of Sirach is a whole series fo wise sayings that state: “Thus-and-so are good, but this is even bet-ter.” In this verse, the comparison is between human helpers and the spiritual practice of almsgiving. it claims that charity toward the poor will benefit us even more than the help we receive from family and friends.

The comparison may seem exaggerated. For we have all experienced being in some kind of trouble and finding friends and family reaching out to us with great love. But sometimes there is little that others can do to help us. They cannot, for example, ease the pain of a broken relationship or the death of a loved one. so this Scripture proclaims that our prac-tice of generosity to the poor will bring down God’s blessing and healing when we ourselves are hurting. Look back at a time in your own life when this is exactly what happened and offer a prayer of thanks.

“I would like to share with you this evening, and it is a saying of Jesus: Come to me, families from around the world—Jesus says—and I will give you rest, so that your joy may be complete.
