Fourth Sunday of Advent December 23, 2018 MEMORIES AND DREAMS

Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of

our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our

home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar

speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old sto-

ries and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an

underground river and accompanies us wherever we go.

Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and

made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollect-

ing, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected.

Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the

country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements

and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord’s

words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories

of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our

own living faith. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

On This Day Earth Shall Ring

By: Piae Cantiones, 1582

On this day earth shall ring With the song children sing

To the Lord, Christ our King, Born on earth to save us;

God in Him forgave us. Ideo, ideo, ideo gloria in excelsis Deo!

His the doom, ours the mirth; When He came down to earth,

Bethlehem saw His birth; Ox and ass beside Him

From the cold would hide Him. Ideo, ideo, ideo gloria in excelsis Deo!

God’s bright star, over His head, Wise men three to Him led,

Kneel they low by His bed, Lay their gifts before Him,

Praise Him and adore Him. Ideo, ideo, ideo gloria in excelsis Deo!

On this day angels sing; With their song earth shall ring.

Praising Christ, heaven’s King, Born on earth to save us;

Peace and love He gave us. Ideo, ideo, ideo gloria in excelsis Deo!

Ideo gloria in excelsis Deo!

“Therefore, Glory to God in the Highest!”

This is one of the earliest known Christmas Carols. Carols were sung in homes, pubs, and the streets rather than in Churches.

INVITING ALL WOMEN (bring a guest!) to join In a NEW EXPERIENCE - Beginning JANUARY

9th for 4 Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11 in the

Antonian Room. We will continue our informal,

friendly fellowship of women which began at St. An-

thony’s over 48 years ago. For the first time however,

this will be referred to as a RETREAT entitled “Holy

Women, Full of Grace.” We will ‘sit with some of the

women of the Gospel,’ using pages from Sister Joan

Mitchells book by that title. As we live this experience

together, we unite ourselves in prayer to the lives of all

women and girls. (Do you have them in your family?

Daughters, granddaughters, aunts, mothers, girlfriends,

grandmothers?) READINGS from Scripture will guide

us and in them we hope to find refuge. Please consider

joining us . . .

JANUARY 9 we will begin with Peter’s Mother-In-

Law. Are you a mother in law? Do you or Did you have a

mother in law? Can we stop thinking wrongly of them?

JANUARY 16 we will look at the woman with the hem-

orrhage. Have you ever been ill? Taken care

of someone who was ill? How do we feel about the sick?

JANUARY 23 we will ‘meet’ Beatrice Bruteau, philos-

opher, mathematician, author, mystic and look at her

thoughts on earth’s birth pangs. The earth labors, we all

labor.

JANUARY 30 stay tuned….our God is a God of surpris-

es! We will include in our time together the usual Lec-

tionary Study for the coming weekend’s Liturgical Read-

ings on these mornings together. We feast and thrive on

The Word of God. Coffee too! Questions? Call Janie

Banner @364-7626 anytime, or mornings in the office at

364-6150.

JERRY WARREN, 75, former parishioner, graduate of

Saint Anthony’s School, and decades long resident and

businessman of Hereford – Warren Brothers Auto (son of

Velma and Walt Warren), passed on Dec. 7 in Oklahoma

after a lengthy illness. Services will be held after the first

of the year. May he rest in peace and his family be con-

soled by their faith.

church and at the church office. The spiritual bouquet can

be offered for anyone.

A Christmas Prayer We pray to understand His call to love one another

as He Loved us. We earnestly pray to close the

doors of hate and open the door of love all over the

world.

May we reach out to each child with the message

of His love, mercy and grace and show them what

the true meaning of Christmas is to us all.

Let kindness come with every gift and good desires

with every greeting. May we take this time to

extend our gifts to the poor and the lonely and

bring His love to them.

We pray for all those who are not able to be with

their families in this joyous season. May we reach

those we can and extend the Love and Peace of

Lord Jesus.

Deliver us from evil by the blessings which Lord

Jesus brings, and teach us to be glad with clear

hearts in this season of peace.

May the Christmas morning make us happy to be

your children, and Christmas evening bring us to

our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving one

another and feeling the true love and peace of Lord

Jesus with us. We pray in the blessed name of

Jesus, Amen!

HAVE yourself a ‘Merry little Advent’! Pick up a copy of the Advent Reflections “Watch for the

Lord” by Pope Francis, Mother (now Saint) Teresa and

Henri Nouwen. These are in the church entrances, some

in English, a few copies in Spanish. Please make sure

which one you are taking. They are provided by your par-

ish to help prepare you and your family for a holier, more

meaningful Christmas. Pray together at mealtime or eve-

nings, and grow! Advent is a time of preparation, wait-

ing, and watching for The Lord to come in glory.

HERE’S AN IDEA FOR THE NEW YEAR, help with RESOLUTIONS: “DOORS TO THE

SACRED – A Historical Introduction to Sacraments in the Catholic Church“ by Joseph Martos.

We invite parishioners to an intriguing and illuminating history of the sacraments available in one

volume, revised every 4 years for The Catholic Church founded by Jesus Christ, ever alive and re-

vealed through His Grace and Knowledge.

This study will begin anew in January following the holidays, on Friday mornings from 7-8 in

the Antonian Room. It will feature: the historical development of the liturgy, doctrine and canon

law of the sacraments(what?!) biblical, patristic, medieval, modern and contemporary ideas and

practices; concise, non-technical language (easy!) the sacramental theories of the great theological

thinkers of all times; and individual treatment of each of the seven ecclesial sacraments (ecclesial…

a new word for you? Don’t be afraid!)

FACTS we will learn more about:

Every religion in the world has sacraments (oh yeah!) Sacraments were called effective signs be-

cause they really had an effect on people. (how so?) Infant baptism became a standard practice in

the fifth century. The traditional theology of Confirmation was based largely on some 9th century

forgeries (what?!) Some early celebrations of the Eucharist did not contain the words of consecra-

tion. Until the 13thcentury people sometimes confessed their sins to each other, rather than to a

priest. (let’s look at that story!) During the first centuries of Christianity holy oil was taken internal-

ly as well as applied to the body. (drink up!?) There was no Catholic wedding ritual before the

11thcentury (Who pronounced ‘man and wife?’) Women were ordained deacons in the Church until

the 4th century (really?) and most priests did not have any seminary training before the 16th century

(oh my!)

SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN ABOUT OUR CHURCH’s HISTORY.

Please join us. Call Janie to RSVP a book, for pay and order. Cost is $18-$20.

AUTHOR: Joseph Martos holds an S.T.B. from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, is Professor of Theol-

ogy and Philosophy at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. He has had extensive practical experience in reli-

gious education and interfaith dialogue. This book treats the history and theology of the 7 sacraments of the Catholic

Church without making assumptions about readers’ beliefs. Teachers, students, catholic and non-Catholic alike will

find this popular study invaluable in understanding the historical and cultural evolution of these rituals which lie at

the heart of Catholic theological doctrine. Parishioners in other churches in the Amarillo Diocese have completed a

study and discussion period with this book and recommend it to us at St. Anthony’s.

Give the gift of time! Volunteer to be a friend to a child, in our Bigs in

Schools, a 1-to-1 friendship program. We have

children waiting for a Big Brother/Big Sister. Time

required is less than one hour per week, during child’s

lunch/recess time. No experience necessary. Just a

caring heart and a little time. In return, you will receive a new friend, who will be anxiously

waiting to see you every week with a

smile on their face. Your Little will

be inspired by your friendship, to do

better in school, and it has been

proven to boost their self-

confidence, decrease depression , and bullying. Call Sara Pesina-Director -for more information 364-6171.

ACTS Small Church Community Group. ACTS small group will not meet until January 14. The

group is open to those who have attended an ACTS

retreat.
