West Yorkshire Cross Country Final
After competing in a number of qualifying races Seth (Y6) and
Jessica (Y5) showed they had what it takes and made it through
to the West Yorkshire Cross Country Finals which took place at
Temple Newsam. It was a very wet and muddy event but both
children gave it their all as they ran 1235 meters. It was a great
achievement for both children to make it to the finals and
everyone at Headlands is extremely proud of their efforts.
Thank You!
We would like to take this opportunity to
say a big thank you to all families who
supported our most recent book fair in
school. You helped us to raise a grand total
of £377.69 which means we have
approximately £111 in
commission money to
spend on books/
resources for our
school libraries.
We also held a non-uniform day on Friday
15th March in aid of
Comic Relief. Thanks
to your generous
donations of silver
coins we raised
£366.91!

World Book Day 2019
What a fantastic World Book Day we had this year! A big thank you to all of the families, children and
staff who embraced dressing up as their favourite character- all of the amazing costumes were
wonderful to look at and there was a lovely atmosphere around school all day. Our theme this year
was traditional tales including: fairy tales, myths and stories from other cultures. Each year group
focused on a different story and enjoyed taking part in a range of exciting activities throughout the
day. One of the highlights this year was seeing the children from KS2 read and share stories with the
children in KS1 and EYFS. It was a lovely chance for our children to bond through adventure, mystery,
non-fiction, fantasy and lots of other different genres together. Please enjoy having a look at some of
the pictures below that were taken on the day - there are many more on our school website!
Miss Hull also took four children from Year 6 to Huddersfield Town Hall to take part in a world book day quiz.
The children had over 20 books to read and revise and were asked a series of questions throughout six rounds.
Although they didn’t win, the children worked incredibly well together and had a great time taking part. Their
behaviour was outstanding and they represented Headlands extremely well. Miss Hull said it was a pleasure to
share the experience with them. Well done Y6!

WW2 Workshops
In March, Year 6 enjoyed a ‘World War 2 Home Front and Evacuee Drama Workshop’, whereby an experienced and highly
qualified drama teacher visited school and led a range of engaging and insightful activities with Year 6 all based on drama
and performance. The year 6 children demonstrated their existing knowledge and acquired further knowledge all about
evacuation and life on the home front. They then constructed some emotive and thought provoking freeze frames
demonstrating real life war experiences. It’s safe to say, we certainly have some aspiring actors/actresses in Year 6!
Choir Visit to Ings House
In March, Mrs Bradley and Mr
Holdsworth took fourteen members of
the choir to sing at the local Ings House
Residential Home. School started visiting
the home about five years ago and
always try to go at least once a year. The
choir sang a selection of their favourite
songs for about half an hour. Their
singing was very well received and the
residents even joined in with percussion
instruments for one of the songs. The
children behaved and sung perfectly and
they particularly enjoyed sharing buns
and juice with the residents afterwards!
Swimming Gala
A huge well done to the children in Y5/6 who represented Headlands
at the Spenborough Swimming Gala. All involved gave it their all and
showed great sportsmanship. We’d like to give a special mention to
Manuga who came 3rd overall in his race. The girls and boys relay
teams won the heats that they competed in too. Both Miss Dyson and
Mrs Pearson were extremely proud of all the competitor’s from
Headlands.
Well done Emmy!
Back in December, Emmy and her family held a Christmas Fair to raise funds for a CICRA, a
charity which supports children with Crohns Disease and Colitis. They organised stalls, a raffle,
a DJ, face painting and more! Emmy and her family raised an incredible £1015! Wow!

Robinwood Residential Visit
What a fantastic residential Y6 had to Robinwood in March! All of the children gave the
activities their best and really challenged themselves to try things that were out of their
comfort zones. We are so proud of their super behaviour! All of our pupils represented
Headlands excellently and the staff and pupils had the most fun-filled, action-packed 3
days! Please take time to have a look through the photos from their time away to see
what exciting things they got up to! The photos are on our school website as a zip file for
you to download - we hope you enjoy looking through some great memories!
Well done Charlotte
It’s great to hear that Charlotte in
Y4 has recently demonstrated a
range of gymnastics exercises with
success in order to receive this
award for confidence. She looks
very proud of herself in this photo
and we are very proud of her too.
Dance Champion
We’ve also loved hearing
about Megan in Y6 who
recently competed in a dance
festival. She was awarded
three 1st place medals and
also placed 3rd and 4th in two
other dances. Well done
Megan and good luck in your
future competitions.

Carry My Story
Year 4 have been continuing with their ‘Carry My
Story’ project.
A parishioner from the local community came into
school during the second half of the Spring term to be
interviewed by some of the Year 4 children. The
children generated the questions that they wanted to
ask her and did a great job representing Headlands
School and retrieving the information. The children
then shared what they had found out with the rest of
the class, this is an example of another story that they
have now ‘carried’.
RATS!
Year 3 and 4 worked incredibly hard this half term and managed to pull
off a fantastic performance of ‘RATS’. The children showed off their
talents using expression and intonation to portray each of their
characters.
They were given lots of praise by all the teaching staff plus parents and
carers who came to see
them perform.
The children put in a lot of
time and dedication in
order to make their play a success, the acting was
incredible and the Year 3 choir sang with confidence.
Well done everyone!
Football Stars!
We were delighted to receive this photograph of Liam, George and Robbie in
Y1 who have all made the development team for Bradford City.
George and Robbie train once a week and Liam trains
twice a week. Their families are incredibly proud of them
and we are too.
Keep up the hard work boys!

WOW!
We were absolutely amazed to hear about Tyler’s
skills in Y4. His family have informed us that he is
able to solve a scrambled Rubik’s cube in less than
90 seconds!! WOW!
Tyler was bought his first Rubik’s cube in
December 2018 and has taught himself how to
solve the puzzle by watching online tutorials and
memorising complicated algorithms.
Well done Tyler!
Bumpy - Ready, Steady, Go!
We’ve heard Jacob had a wonderful time in Birstall
when he took part in the Bumpy Ready, Steady, Go
project. This project enabled Jacob to experience the
thrill of using a variety of adapted off-road vehicles.
Jacob loves spending time outdoors and had a great
time (he even appeared on Calendar News alongside
some other children from the project). Jacob hopes
to take part in the project again soon.
We hope you have lots of fun next time too Jacob!
Zoolab
Recently, Zoolab visited Y2 with some special visitors to help reinforce the children’s understanding of habitats. The
children were very lucky to meet Grumpy Bob the African Land Snail (who is normally found in rainforests). They also met
Harriet the scorpion as well as
Ozzy the corn snake. There were
also visitors from an urban
habitat; Scabbers and Remus,
two playful rats. The children
and staff had an AWESOME
afternoon and it was a brilliant
end to their topic ‘Who lives in a
place like this?’.

Y3 Trip
Year 3 had a fun packed day at the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and
Falconry Centre in Sheffield on Wednesday 10th
April. Their visit linked to their rainforest topic
and they learnt lots of exciting facts about the
different animals that live there - they even got
to hold some of them! The children and staff
explored the park and saw lots of other animals
including lemurs, meerkats, porcupines and
chipmunks. See our website galleries for more
photos!

Reception Trip
Reception also spent the day learning offsite on Wednesday
10th April when they visited Cannon Hall Farm.
The children enjoyed seeing all of the animals from pigs to
alpacas and meerkats too. The children loved the tour of
the farm especially feeding the animals and watching a
milking demonstration. Everyone was super well behaved
and made all the teachers proud.
See our website galleries for more photos!
Easter Fun
The Friends of Headlands Easter Egg-stravaganza was a success on Monday 8th April. The Easter Bunny even joined families
for an egg hunt in the school woodland where children searched for three hidden Spring pictures in exchange for a choco-
late egg. There was also an opportunity for families to purchase some delicious cakes, buns and other sweet treats. Huge
thanks to all of the families who baked for the event. Many children also took part in school’s Easter poster and bonnet
competitions - prizes were awarded on Thursday 11th April - congratulations to all of the winners! See our website galleries
for more photos! The school council also organised an Easter raffle in school. Thank you to all families who took part in the
raffle - the money raised will be sent to a school we are twinned with in Tanzania who are currently fundraising for desks
for their pupils. We hope you all have a safe, fun-filled Easter holiday! School opens again on Monday 29th April.
