It is hard to believe that the summer is almost over and a new season is upon us. We look forward to new programming and continuation of our popular Rabbi Michael B. Eisenstat Miniversity of Judaism and 92nd St “Y” programs, the upcoming Gala, Scholar-in-Resi-dence lectures, plus Men’s Club, BIW and WOOO ac-tivities. The summer has been active with the behind-the-scenes efforts to make the coming year even more exciting. We all know that our synagogue thrives because of the dedication of so many of our volunteer congregants. I would like, from time-to-time, to acknowledge spe-cific individuals and thank them on behalf of the con-gregation and their fellow volunteers for their ongoing efforts. Ruth Engman and Joe Miller are two that I would like to commend this month. Ruth is and has been the Recording Secretary of the Congregation for many years and is responsible for taking and publishing the minutes of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee meetings. This means that she attends all the meetings and has to pay attention. She is also the coordinator for the Shabbat and holiday morning services and works diligently in finding people to participate with honors or to read the Haftorah. Joe is and has been the Corresponding Secretary of the Congregation for a long time. He is responsi-ble for sending out the many items of correspondence

that require the Temple’s signature or seal. He has to keep up with all that goes on with official Temple busi-ness or matters concerning our members, often without prompting. He is also the Gabbi, the lay assistant, at the reading of the Torah each Shabbat and holiday morning service, and he is and has been the guiding usher at all our Friday night Shabbat services. We are told that Shabbat is the most important holi-day in the Jewish calendar, but it is often overlooked as such because of its frequency during the year. So it is with Ruth and Joe; their involvement is weekly through-out the year, so it is easy to overlook what they are ac-complishing on our behalf. Toda Raba to Ruth and Joe for all your efforts and dedication to the success of TBI. As we approach the upcoming New Year, we look back at the past year with thanks for our blessings, con-solation for our losses, hopes for rectifying our mistakes and the pleasure of expectation for things to come. Elana and I want to wish all of you a healthy and happy New Year, and I look forward to seeing and greet-ing you soon.

Regards, Earl

Selichot to Feature "The Gates Are Closing"

Set in a synagogue on Yom Kippur, Merle Feld's highly regarded play, "The Gates Are Closing," ex-plores the meaning of Jewish identity through the eyes of a colorful range of characters. Their experi-ences awaken deeper understanding and apprecia-tion of the significance of the High Holy Days. Ex-cerpts from the play will be offered at the Selichot program on Saturday September 24 at 7:30 p.m. fol-lowed by a short discussion led by Rabbi Katz. The Selichot service featuring Cantor Robert Ma-rinoff, Ann Stephenson-Moe and the Temple Beth Israel choir will be presented at 8:15 with a dessert reception to follow. Please let the Temple office know you plan to attend the evening.

A Closer Look At The High Holy Days Rabbi Katz will hold a pre High Holy Days seminar on Tuesday, September 20 at 10:30 am at the Temple. This opportunity for focused study and discussion is de-signed to enhance the experience of this especially sa-cred period. You will gain valuable insights about High Holy Days customs, prayers and themes. The seminar provides a chance to deepen understanding of Rosh Ha-Shannah and Yom Kippur in ways that will heighten their personal significance and meaning. Please let the office know you are interested in attending.

sirens that are sounded throughout the country, we will also stand with our Israeli brethren for two minutes of silence to honor the memory of those who have died in defense of the nation. You can review a summary of the itinerary (which can still be modified according to our group’s wishes) which starts below. You can also access a website that has been established for our group: www.arzaworld.com/temple-beth-israel-long-boat-key.aspx. You can find maps, material on the hotels, regis-tration information, etc. The cost of the trip, includ-ing deluxe accommodations, char-tered bus, guide, site fees, educa-tional programs and many meals is $3,039 per person (double occu-pancy). Singles who are interested in sharing accommodations with another single can be arranged. ARZA Tours, which is handling the arrangements, has secured conve-

nient round trip air transportation from Tampa for $1,000. You can also meet the group in Philadelphia for the flight to Tel Aviv or fly to Tel Aviv directly and meet us in Israel. Exploring the Holy Land’s myriad wonders in the company of others is a thrilling and spiritually riveting experience. Our journey together promises to be one filled with beauty, fascination, learn-ing and joy. The itinerary is nicely paced with opportunities to relax along the way or take advantage of free time to venture on your own. I look forward to sharing this adventure with many of you. I hope you will seriously consider taking advantage of this exciting opportu-nity to see Israel in a very personal way. Please let me know if you are interested. Marty, Emma and I extend a warm L’Shanah Tova. May the New Year be a source of strength and promise for you and your family.

Let’s Make It Happen While on vacation in Columbus, Ohio last month I visited with long time Temple member Betty Schiff. Original founders of Beth Israel, Betty and her husband Herb (z’’l) have given generously to the Jew-ish community both in the U.S. and abroad. During our conversation, I shared that a wonderful congrega-tional trip to Israel is planned for next spring immediately following Passover. What makes it special, I said, is that we will visit sites of particular interest to TBI members like the new Alex and Betty Schoen-baum Science, Education, Cultural and Sports Campus in Kiryat Yam; Beit Daniel, a beacon of Progressive Judaism in Israel founded by Gerry and Ruth (z’’l) Daniel; and the re-nowned Technion in Haifa. Betty then mentioned how she and Herb had established a popular Jerusalem city park. Upon comple-tion, she described touring the green space with legendary Jerusa-lem mayor Teddy Kollek. “Thanks for letting me know,” I told her, “We will certainly add it to the itinerary.” The ten day trip is designed for those who may be traveling to Is-rael for the first time as well as for the seasoned visitor. We will experi-ence Tel Aviv, Haifa, Safed and Jeru-salem, receive briefings on current issues relating to Israeli culture and politics and enjoy a range of special activities including the celebration of Israel Independence Day (Yom Haatzmaut) in Tiberias. Social ActionThe Season Ahead There will be several food drives starting with the annual High Holi-day request. Subsequent drives will occur prior to Hanukkah and Pass-over. We will continue our support for the Galvano One Stop Center in Bradenton. Among the activities planned are focused donations of needed goods for the center and a possible small fund-raiser. A new activity, scheduled to be-gin later in the fall, is the Linus Proj-ect. Interested TBI members will meet on a regular basis at the Temple to create handmade, washable blan-kets that will be given to seriously ill and traumatized children. TBI will affiliate with a chapter in Tampa, the nearest to us. Stay tuned for more

information in October. We are looking for a possible venue as a volunteer effort for De-cember 25th for those of us who would like a change from the usual routine of movies and Chinese food. We will continue to work with Federation to support a Passover Seder for Sarasota’s Russian Jewish community. Once we have a date set, we will be requesting volunteers. If you are interested, please contact me at the email address below. Our annual Social Action Shab-bat is scheduled for Friday, Feb-ruary 17th, 2012. Please save the date! On this special evening we will be honoring many of our TBI members who have given time and personal attention to many of the charitable causes in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. It is not too early to let us know either who you are

and what you do, or about a friend who may be too modest to come forward. Contact me at the email address below. We will continue to keep in touch with activities at the Aging in Paradise Resource Center at the Longboat Chapel. The website is www.islandchapel.com. Click on the Resource Center Link or call them at (941) 383-6491. Finally this month’s additional link: To keep abreast of social jus-tice issues and events in the broader Reform Jewish community, log on to www.rac.org the website of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC). Welcome back to our Temple’s fall-winter season. The Temple Library was open all summer thanks to Hermine Silver and Gabrielle Miller. In our lives, no two years are ever the same. That’s what adds to the zest of Temple membership, and this maxim applies to reading. We keep adding to our col-lection with a careful, professional selection process. In the coming weeks we will be adding the latest and the newest. For example, how much reading have we done about the Holocaust, the consequences of the policies of Germany’s mishugina leader? Writer Erik Larson takes us to the front end of the process, Hitler’s first days in office with the gripping story, In the Garden of Beasts. It’s 1933. Meet William Dodd, the new Ameri-can Ambassador to Germany, a college Dean who’s an amateur at statecraft. Meet his beautiful 24-year-old daughter who at first is admiring of the vigor and energy of the Nazis until she and the rest of the fam-ily have the kind of awakening that will come to the world several years later. The book reads like a novel, but it is true, and this page-turner has become a best seller.

Other additions coming are Portrait of a Spy by David Silva, and Just One Catch: a Biography of Joseph Heller by Tracey Daugherty. Our Temple library isn’t just a room. It’s a portal to take you to far off lands and times that will add excitement to your life. Marjorie Sandy, Librarian

On August 2, several members of the Temple Beth Israel Social Ac-tion Committee made one of their regular visits to the Bill Galvano One-Stop Center in Bradenton. The Center is part of the Community Coalition on Homelessness, and TBI has been supporting them with donations of clothing and other ne-cessities since last winter. A visit to this spotless and effi-cient operation is a real eye-opener. Homeless people are able to receive mail here, have laundry done, re-ceive new clothes, take a shower, and even work at the computer bank to do job hunting research. There is a volunteer dentist, barber, and other health care workers, as well as counselors from several different agencies on site. It is well run and so inspirational—here are people actu-ally making a difference. They are not just “talking” about the prob-lem; they are actually doing what needs to be done to help the home-less. And help them they do—they had 7200 visits last month!! Everyone who utilizes the Cen-ter is screened through the Human Services Information System used throughout the state of Florida. This data base contains a history of services he or she has received from any agency throughout the state. Also on the site is “Our Daily Bread,” a food kitchen where a hot meal is served all day, every day,

except Thanksgiving! Our contact at the Center, Linda Gaines, speaks all over the county on the subject of homelessness. The Social Action Committee is planning a tour of the Center dur-ing the season, but if anyone wants to see it before then, just give Kathy Brooks a call and she will arrange it. You will be amazed at this extraor-dinary operation. If you have donations for the Center, you can leave them at the

Temple and they will be delivered. Most needed is funding for medi-cation, socks, mosquito repellant, toilet articles & soap, shoes (tennis & work boots), jeans (size 32-38 es-pecially), baby diapers and formula, reading glasses, and bikes (they re-furbish old bicycles and give them to homeless people for transporta-tion). If you need something picked up from your home, just let the TBI office know.

Those Who Can…Will September is the month for the kick-off of The Leadership Circle Member-ship Campaign for the 2012 calendar year. Because dues are not sufficient to pay the cost of the full range of reli-gious, educational, social and outreach activities that kept us the dynamic cen-

Endowment Illuminations

Here is a simple way for you to say Happy New Year to our Temple. Write a letter! It couldn’t be simpler. It doesn’t cost anything right now, only takes a few min-utes, and yet will have a significant impact on our future. I am refer-ring to a letter of intent. In it, you plan to include Tem-ple Beth Israel in your will with a gift to be distributed with your other testamentary distributions. Our office has just such a letter all

prepared for you to just fill in the blanks. The only other job for you is to make the addition to your will. I believe this to be so impor-tant that a special section is being designed to be included in our bul-letins so that your thoughtfulness can encourage others to join in this effort. If you have already named our Endowment fund as a benefi-ciary in your will or trust, please call the Temple and tell Mary so that we can include your name.

I have already written my let-ter and have included the TBI En-dowment Fund in my will. It re-ally makes me feel good, especially in these rollercoaster economic times. In my opinion, this decision should not be dependent on to-morrow’s Dow Jones average, but on my love for Temple Beth Israel.

Visit the Hula Nature Reserve and the Euphoria Interactive Experience, connecting birds, water and the Zionist endeavor. Dinner at the gourmet Roberg Restaurant as you view the sun setting over the Sea of Galilee.

Drive south along the Jordan Rift Valley. Ar-rive in Jerusalem and stop at Mount Scopus to say the traditional shehechiyanu blessing. Experience the sites, smells, and tastes of the Machaneh Yehuda Market followed by lunch. Check into the Inbal Hotel and relax in preparation for Shabbat.
