OUTDOORSMEN’S SERIES

GPS and Geo-Caching, Matt Rowe $35Sunday, March 21, 9 am – 12 pm

Are you an outdoor enthusiast? Become a recreational GPS expert and learn the sport of geocaching—high tech treasure hunting. GPS receivers can be easily integrated into and improve virtually any outdoor activity, if you can understand and utilize one properly. This course will cover how the GPS network works, the history of the system, how to use a receiver and how to shop for a receiver. Gain fi eld experience using GPS receivers which will be provided, or feel free to bring your own receiver and learn how to use it!

Chainsaw Safety and Maintenance, Kevin Poole $59Sundays, March 21, April 11 and May 9, 9 am – 6 pm

Everyone using chainsaws should be aware of the proper operation of the equipment and common safety procedures. This course covers the basics of chainsaw operation including general maintenance, chainsaw safety and proper felling techniques. It meets the fi rst of three core areas required by NYS Trained Logger Certifi cation program. Steel toe boots are required; other equipment will be provided. A signed release form is required prior to participation in this class.

Sausage Making, Eric Shelley $60 Friday, March 26, 6 – 10 pm

Due to the overwhelming popularity of this class we are off ering it again this spring. Your instructor will show you how to make sweet, hot, chorizo, cajun and breakfast sausage. Class includes equipment needed, recipes, ingredients, methods and packages of each variety to take home.

This course will introduce you to the care of sheep and goats in regards to nutrition, foot care, preventative medicine, parasite control, urinary obstruction and neonatal care.

Composting Made Simple, Robert Rynk $35Tuesday, April 20, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Eliminate half of your trash and get compost as a bonus. With a few tips, home composting is simple. In this session, you will learn the basic process, ingredients and methods of turning food scraps, leaves, grass, yard trimmings and other household organics into compost.

Landis Arboretum Plant Health Care Classes, Fred Breglia $20Wednesdays, July 7, 14, 21, 28, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Learn how to promote plant health from an Internationally Certifi ed Arborist and the Director of Horticulture for Landis Arboretum, Fred Breglia. The objective of the plant health care program is to maintain or improve a landscape’s appearance, vitality and in the case of tree safety, use the most cost eff ective and environmentally sensitive practices and treatments available. This involves monitoring, accurate diagnosis and using preventive treatments.

Geared for the development of basic communication skills progressing to work place situations. This course will include basic vocabulary, grammar points, pronunciation, and listening and speaking skills. This course can serve as a foundation for continued language development.

In this hands-on clinic, you will learn horse safety and restraint, zones around the horse, gett ing horses safely in and out of stalls, leading horses, how to handle horses around other people and other horses, tying knots, haltering, etc.

Horse Riding Club for Kids $35/class Wednesdays, April 7, 14, 21, 28, May 5, 12, 6 – 7 pm $155/session

In this six week class your child will learn basic horse care and safety followed by riding lessons during lessons 2-6 and the grand fi nale – a horse show for family and friends to enjoy. This class is open to children ages 6 – 17.

Spring Horseback Riding for Adults $35/class Saturdays, April 3, 10, 17, 24, May 1, 8, 10 – 11 am $155/session

It’s never too late to ride. Bring a friend and your adventurous spirit, and we’ll supply the knowledge. The course is made up of six riding lessons starting with basic horse care and safety lecture; mandatory att endance required. Lessons 2-5 will consist of riding lessons, and lesson 6, our fi nale, is a trail ride.

Private Horse Lesson, Beginners to Experienced Riders $45Call to schedule 1 hour lesson

Whether you’re 5 or 65, under the guidance of our staff you will learn the basics of horsemanship, including tacking, grooming, riding and stable management or as an experienced rider, advance your skills for pleasure or to prepare you for competition.

Level One: Introduction to Water Skills, 8 – 9 amThis course is designed for the non-swimmer at least 5 years of age who is willing to participate in the class without parental assistance.

Level Two: Fundamental Aquatic Skills, 9 – 10 amLearn the basic aquatic skills of rhythmic breathing, coordinated arm and leg movements (front and back crawl) and experience swimming in deep water.

Level Three: Stroke Development, 10 – 11 amLearn to utilize the front crawl and back crawl, the mechanics of diving and continue to develop rhythmic breathing and survival skills (bobbing, underwater swim, treading water, etc.)

Level Four: Stroke Improvement, 11 am – 12 pmStudent continues to improve and refi ne the front crawl and back crawl and is introduced to the breast stroke, elementary back stroke, butt erfl y stroke and sidestroke. The standing front dive is also further practiced.

Level Five: Stroke Refi nement, 12 – 1 pmStudent begins to perfect the basic swimming strokes – front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast stroke, side stroke, and butt erfl y. New skills introduced are: open turns, fl ip turns, survival swimming, and rescue breathing.

Level Six: Personal Water Safety, 12 – 1 pmThe student swimmer will improve their overall endurance. Refi ning the basic strokes is stressed with the eventual goal to develop an accomplished swimmer with all the requisite swimming skills. Prerequisite skills include: front crawl – 50 yards, back crawl – 50 yards, breast stroke – 25 yards.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training $285Saturday, March 27, one hour pretest, call for schedule

Required course for someone who would like to be a lifeguard. Provides the skills and the knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. You must be 15 years of age by the end of the course and must complete prerequisites to earn certifi cate. This training will certify you to work in pools, water parks and all waterfront locations throughout the United States as an American Red Cross Lifeguard Trainer.

Water Safety Instruction Assistant $89Saturdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27, March 6, 27, April 3, 10 make up date April 17

Obtain hands on experience teaching swimming lessons as an assistant to the Water Safety Instructor. Students will be assigned an instruction placement by their instructor. When registering please specify availability, rank in the order of preference: Tuesdays 6 – 7:15 pm, Saturdays 8 – 9 am, 9 – 10 am or 10 – 11 am. Please note all students must att end all sessions in order to qualify for the certifi cate.

American Red Cross CPR/AED, Jaime Hotaling $89for the Professional Rescuer Saturday, Jan. 9, 8 am – 12 pm; Sunday, Jan. 10, 1 – 4 pm

Calling all EMTs, public safety personnel, lifeguards, fi rst aid station workers, health care professionals, athletic trainers and students of fi re, police and rescue academies – this class is for you. You will be able to recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, two-rescuer CPR, use a resuscitation mask and bag valve mask resuscitator as well as gain the knowledge and skills needed to care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest through the use of an AED.

Week 5 – Scuplting with ClayOven baked clay comes in lots of colors and can be remolded over and over until it is baked. In this class, students will decorate a box with clay shapes and fi gures to make a one-of-a-kind treasure chest.

Program Overview

This intensive hands-on training program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills students require when entering employment in the meat processing industry. Students will be skilled in sanitation, food safety, slaughter, meat cutt ing and processing. As part of the students preparation for the industry, the program consists of specialized training in the accuracy of cutt ing, knife handling, portion control, merchandising and the utilization of all products. Training includes meat animal slaughter, primal fabrication, retail cutt ing, value added products, wrapping and storage of fi nished product. Program Overview

SUNY Cobleskill has the oldest accredited Histotechnology program in the United States. It provides the academic and technical skills necessary for entry-level competence in this fi eld. Histotechnology is a unique, specialized area within medical laboratory sciences. It involves the preservation of tissue in preparation of microscopic slides for pathologists to permit patient diagnoses and treatment. Tissues are obtained from multiple sources, including operating rooms, clinics, doctor’s offi ces, emergency rooms and autopsies. Histotechniciansmay also prepare frozen tissues sections to enable rapid diagnosis while a patient is undergoing surgery.

The program covers the major areas of histotechnology, including the grossing and fi xation of tissues, processing, and embedding, sectioning and staining. Specialized training, such as bone decalcifi cation and immune histochemistry, is also discussed and practiced in the lab.

Program Overview

Students will learn and implement the basic principles and elements of design as utilized by commercial fl orists. They will be introduced to pricing, selling and care of cut fl owers and arrangements and special event arrangements and planning. Students will apply their knowledge on class projects which may include holiday and wedding projects.

Employment opportunities include working with wholesale fl orists, fl ower shops and fl oral designers. The fl oral design fi eld has extended opportunities with catering events, holiday decoration and design, product display and fl oral needs provided by garden centers, fl oral shops and full service shopping centers.

Certifi ed Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. has approved our program preparing students to meet the educational requirements of the Certifi ed Financial Planner certifi cation. CFP® Certifi cation requirements:

• Completion of the education requirements - SUNY Cobleskill a board registered educational program.

• A Bachelor’s degree is not a required to take the CFP® Certifi cation Examination but is a condition of certifi cation.

TEACHING ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE

Program Overview

This program provides the college credit hours needed for obtaining the NYS Level III Teaching Assistant Certifi cate. In response to the steady growth of paraprofessionals in education, students will obtain the necessary educational background and hands-on training needed to assist in providing instruction to children. Upon completion of this program students will be able to assist teachers with large group instruction as well as work with students in small groups.

Graduates may fi nd employment in preschools and elementary schools. Others may opt to continue their studies by pursuing a degree in Early Childhood. Upon completion of their bachelor’s degree students may transfer to a variety of four year institutions to prepare for teacher certifi cation.

PLANT HEALTH AND BIO SECURITY CERTIFICATE

Program Overview

Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) is a unit of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the USDA that is committ ed to safeguarding agriculture and natural resources from the entry, establishment, or spread of harmful plant pests, diseases and noxious weeds. PPQ serves to allow legitimate international and interstate trade in plants and plant products such as fresh fruits and vegetables, while preventing the introduction of invasive weeds, plant pests and plant diseases. PPQ works to eradicate, suppress or contained pests in cooperation with industry, state departments of agriculture and other government agencies.

This work requires an in depth understanding of the biology of evasive weeds, plant pests and diseases, control methods and the regulatory environment. SUNY Cobleskill’s newly created certifi cate program is designed as a collaborative with APHIS and will be a part of the plant biosecurity curriculum, an initiative sponsored by APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine to promote education, outreach and recruitment activities.
