SPLASHLIGHT ON LIFES

ocial marketing? Maybe I am just becoming a bit cynical about marketing – which is worrying, because it’s my job. Once upon a time marketing was a much more brave sport. The creative people would sit

in dark (often alcoholic) rooms developing marketing that people enjoyed.

Those chirpy little spacemen that fell about laughing at the thought of digging up a potato, boiling it for fifteen of ‘your earth minutes’ before ‘smashing it to pieces’ in order to extol the virtues of Cadbury’s Smash – which, for my younger readers, was dried mashed potato granules to which you simply had to add hot water. It convinced my mum anyway.

I can’t pass junction 10 on the M1 without remembering the Campari adverts of the 1970s when in answer to the question, “Were you truly wafted here from paradise?” Lorraine Chase responded with the immortal words, “Nah, Luton Airport!”

Such was the headline creativity of advertising.

Of course, the glory days had a downside. ‘Hopkins Universal Liniment Linctus – guaranteed to cure coughs, cold sores, rheumatism and broken ankles’ – maybe stretched things from a marketing perspective, but had a certain charm.

The problem with today is that (with some notable exceptions) most marketing has become a bit sterile. It’s become something of a numbers game, I blame Bill Gates for this. In fact I blame

Bill Gates for most things, which is probably a tad unfair, but I’m sure he’s not too troubled by it. But in marketing terms the game has certainly changed. Every marketing action has to be analysed within an inch of its life and fine-tuned accordingly. The results are less than enjoyable.

For instance in the past week I have received at least fifty calls from a company that wishes to introduce me to the combined benefits of a Government grant with their ‘Warm Space’ insulation package (or something similar). How they have got my number I do not know. How they have established the fact that my house has a decrepit roof with the insulation qualities of a tissue, I also do not know. What I have established is that I have been loaded as a prospect on two of their lines, which means I am treated to a perfect pair of calls about 90 seconds apart – every two hours. This can be a little annoying. I would rather risk being exposed to the imperfect marketing of Hopkins Universal Liniment Linctus. But I guess they have done their sums, and the conversion rates justify the irritation.

And then there’s the educational effect. Try walking down any High Street today giving out envelopes containing £20 notes. You will probably struggle to get takers. And that’s because we have all been educated to look out for the marketing catch.

So we move into the next phase:

2 www.splashlight.net

Page 7: Splashlight - Your local celebrity magazine - September 2011

SPLASHLIGHT ON LIFEI’m not sure what the precise facts are, but I think it goes something like this. Mark Zuckerberg developed something called Facebook. There were a few arguments between him and his mates as to whose idea it was, but that’s not important right now. After a short time quite a few people started using Facebook to keep in touch with their friends. In fact it could soon be about a billion people – so it’s quite popular. Mark also became quite popular – so much so, in fact, that his bank account is rumoured to have about as many pounds in it as there are Facebook users – even though none of us are too sure how much money Facebook has actually earned. But it’s here now, and I don’t think it’s going away, for the time being anyway (unless the Chinese have their way). And neither do the clever analytical marketing people – so guess where the energy is now going?

I suppose there is a clear logic. If half the world’s population is going to spend a massive chunk of work and leisure time keeping up to date on Facebook, then that must be a good place to spread your marketing messages, right? Well I’m not so sure myself. Follow Splashlight on Facebook by all means. Yes it’s marketing, but it’s also genuinely social – you know, bright, happy pictures of people having fun – and it might be you! But the thought of being invited to join a fan group for Warm Space Insulation leaves me cold. Maybe that’s the idea.

So let’s see what happens. Is there a risk that the brave new world of social network marketing will throttle the communication that Facebook created? Or will it simply be a matter of what goes around comes around? I think marketing has to stand out. Wherever possible it should be fun, it should be entertaining, and it should be enjoyable. Then you get the message. Just ask a Meerkat.

It Was acceptable In the 80s

ReWInd FestIval 2011

It’s that time of year again... when all the clocks

in Temple Island Meadows, Henley, rewind

thirty years and 20,000 revellers go back...

back to the eighties! So like Doc Brown and

Marty McFly we ditched the here and now, for

the then and... err there.

For anyone who was born in the 70s, the

Rewind Festival IS your childhood in a field!

From He-Man, The A-Team and Ghostbusters,

to penny sweets, legwarmers and songs you

remember recording off the radio, it was all

here in abundance.

Add in a fun fair, live karaoke, a silent disco, a

solar-powered 80s cinema, vintage stalls a-go-

go and more 80s icons than you could shake a

Rubik’s Cube at, and not even the most retro-

phobic of us could fail to get caught up in the

spirit of things.

Twenty-five acts including Bucks Fizz, Holly

Johnson, Bananarama, Toyah, Candi Staton,

Kim Wilde and The Human League took to

the stage over the weekend, whipping up the

nostalgia with hits like ‘Making Your Mind Up’

(complete with skirt routine), ‘Venus’ (hands

up if you remember the dance), ‘Happy Talk’

(definitely not the South Pacific version)

and our all time favourite, ‘YMCA’ with the

event security staff lining up stage front to do

the actions to resounding cheers from the

crowd.

Now THAT’S what I call music!

the spice of life, with MalikLamb Pancake Kebab

Lamb Pancake Kebab starterThis dish really has the “Wow” factor. It’s a delicious starter spinning off last month’s recipe for Sikandari Lamb. (See our August

issue or www.splashlight.net for recipe)At Malik’s restaurant, a similar recipe using a different cut of lamb is used for the pancake filling but this is a simple and perfect way to achieve a great taste at home with minimum effort.

Ingredients for the Pancake Filling1 large cooked lamb shank ½ a medium Onion (finely chopped)1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil¼ teaspoon Chilli Powder¼ teaspoon Salt¼ teaspoon Curry Powder½ teaspoon Tomato Puree½ handful fresh Coriander½ handful Spring Onion (chopped)3 cloves Garlic (finely chopped)

Take a cooked lamb shank and remove the meat from the bone using your fingers to shred the meat into small pieces, removing all unwanted fat. Place in a bowl and set aside.

Heat the oil in a frying pan and add all ingredients except the lamb, coriander and spring onion. Sweat down until the onions are soft – this should take approximately 4-6 minutes.

Add the lamb to the frying pan and heat thoroughly, mixing to ensure an even distribution of all the ingredients. When hot, sprinkle in the coriander and the spring onion, reserving a little of each to use when rolling the pancakes. Give the filling mixture a few tosses in the frying pan and then place in a bowl whilst you cook the pancakes.

Ingredients for the Pancake (Puri/Puree) Dough1 cup Chapati flourTepid waterVegetable Oil for frying¼ teaspoon Salt (leave out if desired)

Put the flour into a bowl and slowing adding a little water at a time mix together to form a dough. Knead the dough to a silky smooth and elastic consistency. Add more flour if the dough is too wet. Set aside and leave for 30-40 minutes minimum.

Split the dough into 4 equal golf ball size balls and then roll each one out into flat pancakes approx 6-7inches in diameter.

Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan. When hot, carefully place a pancake into the pan and fry until lightly golden and starting to cook through, turn over and repeat on the other side. Place the cooked pancake on a kitchen towel to drain excess oil. Repeat with the other 3 pancakes.

To serve, lay out a pancake and spoon a line of the lamb filling on to one side. Sprinkle some chopped spring onion and coriander on top of the filling, then roll the puree (starting from filling end) into a tube.

Diagonally cut off the ends of the pancake where there’s little or no filling then make two more diagonal cuts through the pancake roll, dividing it into 3 equal pieces. Repeat with the other 3 pancakes then place the Lamb Pancake Kebabs onto plates and serve with a salad of your choice.

Chicken Jalfrezi main courseAccording to a recent poll, the Jalfrezi has emerged as the most popular choice in Britain’s Indian restaurants, replacing Chicken Tikka Masala as the nation’s favourite curry dish. Jalfrezi is a

medium hot curry made with green chillies, peppers, onion, tomatoes and traditional spices. Our Malik’s recipe this month will allow you to easily create this traditional dish at home.

Ingredients for the Chicken4 Chicken Breasts1 teaspoon Ginger (pureed)1 teaspoon Garlic (pureed)4 Onions (finely chopped)½ tablespoon Ground Cumin powder½ tablespoon Coriander powder½ tablespoon Turmeric powder½ tablespoon Chilli powder½ tablespoon Salt4 Bay Leaves2 Cinnamon Sticks8 Cardamom Pods5 tablespoons Vegetable Oil

Slice the chicken breasts diagonally across in 1.5cm widths and put to one side.

In a medium size saucepan, heat the cooking oil and add the onions, ginger, garlic, bay leaf, cinnamon, cardamom and salt. Sweat the onions until they are caramelised and soft, stirring occasionally so the onions do not brown and burn. This should take approx 6-10 minutes.

Add the spices (cumin, coriander, turmeric and chilli) and the chicken strips to the pan, mix in well, stirring occasionally. Cook until chicken is cooked through and tender - approx 14-18 minutes.

Place on a low heat to simmer and prepare the sauce, stirring the chicken occasionally.

For the Sauce1 Green Pepper (small)1 Red Pepper (small)5 Green Chillies (chopped in halves)1 Onion (small)1 tablespoon Tomato Puree½-1 tablespoon Chilli Powder (according to taste)1 tablespoon Vegetable OilTo Finish2 tablespoons chopped fresh Coriander

Take 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and heat in a frying pan.

Place the tomato puree and chilli powder into the frying pan and cook for approx 1minute on a high heat, stirring continuously. Slice the whole green chillies in half, chop the onion and peppers into 1 inch cubes and add to the pan, tossing regularly for approx 4 minutes.

Pour the contents of the frying pan into the saucepan containing the chicken. Add the fresh chopped coriander, stir well and leave to simmer for a further 2-4 minutes. Serve on a bed of steamed rice.

Tango dancing has seen something of a resurgence in the

Glynis Barber

Barber’s Shop SecretsGlynis’s Hot TipsBreathe properly! Most people shallow breathe, but it is important to breathe deep down into your diaphragm and fill your lungs otherwise you’ll be starving parts of your body of vital oxygen. Make sure that you have enough antioxidants, which play a very crucial part in your health. Use them on your skin and take a supplement if necessary, to ensure that you have enough.

Exercise your face! Face muscles are connected to our skin so keep them toned because if they droop, your skin will too. Some of the facial exercises included on the DVD I learned when I was at drama school. Our wonderful yoga teacher Howard Napper is now completely addicted to them and does them every day!

15

Did you lead a healthy lifestyle, growing up in South Africa?

I was always active as a child, I did ballet and I was always running around.

But I really only liked junk food and I just ate sweets morning, noon and

night for my entire childhood and up into my 20s!

What kick-started your interest in health and well-being?

Around the time I was doing Dempsey and Makepeace, in the mid-

eighties, I began doing yoga and I just absolutely loved it, it made me feel

differently about myself and much more aware of how I wanted to look

after myself. I have been doing it ever since. Also, I went to an aerobics

class run by an inspiring woman who even used to give us homework!

More or less overnight I went from this junk food-eating, totally unaware

person to being passionately interested in nutrition, food and health. I

started to eat organically, at a time when it was actually quite hard to

find organic food. It was really just me and Prince Charles then, against

the world!

This has literally been a passion of mine ever since. I am a very fit and

healthy person and I have every intention of staying that way.

After leaving EastEnders this year you filmed

Secrets of Anti-Aging. What was the catalyst

for that?

I have received a lot of letters over the years from people

asking what I do because I seem very healthy and youthful.

I have done a lot of research and learned about the things

that affected me so it was a lovely idea to put everything

I love into the Secrets of Anti-Ageing DVD, which is also

going to be shown as a four-part series on Sky Channel

275, the Body in Balance channel.

Anti-ageing is an enduring subject for all women,

isn’t it?

It certainly is, everyone is on a quest, aren’t they? Everyone wants to

be healthy and look good and I think that there’s a lot of pressure on

people in that way.

Listen, we all want to have a wrinkle-free face but at the end of the day it

is really about being healthy; by doing that you will stay youthful. Basically,

you can take 10 years off yourself by eating healthily. Start doing that,

upping your fruit and vegetables and eating food with lots of nutrients

and you’ll see that just that alone will bring results. And that’s before you

add exercise into the equation!

So is the DVD relevant for the male market too?

Health and nutrition is relevant for everybody! During filming, the

predominantly male crew were fascinated by it all and asked me lots of

questions. I think that there is

less pressure on men to defy

the effects of ageing though. But

male or female, with old age

come changes and diseases. Old

age is not for the weak! And

it is lifestyle, not genetics (as

previously thought), which is the

most influential factor in feeling

– and therefore looking – good.

Who are the experts

providing advice on the

DVD?

I have done all kinds of exercise,

including yoga, for 25 years.

We chose to include it on the

DVD and world-renowned yoga teacher Howard Napper has created

a unique program for it. We also talk to the esteemed nutritionist

Jeannette Jackson about the importance of a healthy diet

and leading make-up artist Jemma Kidd about the most

effective way to use make up.

Time and inclination often block the path of

good intention!

I am a very busy woman too and I know how hard it

can be, but all I can say is that I manage to find the time.

I’m currently on a theatre tour but I can assure you that

whatever town I am in I will find a local gym and a yoga

class too. As for the correct mindset well, this isn’t about

going on a diet or depriving yourself. I don’t deny myself

anything, even chocolate – I just eat quality organic dark chocolate!

The Secrets of Anti-Ageing with Glynis Barber, featuring Howard Napper

airs on Body in Balance, SKY Channel 275, from September 24th. The DVD is

available to purchase from www.bodyinbalance.tv,

Amazon and all good retail outlets.

You can also catch Glynis in Season’s Greetings

at the Theatre Royal Windsor until September

10th, Richmond Theatre from October 10th,

Guildford from October 24th and High Wycombe

from October 31st.

Glynis Barber is still as stunning as she looked when she portrayed one half of the television crime-busting duo Dempsey and Makepeace, twenty-five years ago. More recently seen in Emmerdale, The Royal and lately EastEnders, she is now about to share her beauty and well-being tips in her series Secrets of Anti-Ageing with Glynis Barber.

We pedalled along to Weybridge in August to watch the London-Surrey Cycle Classic, one of the ‘London Prepares’ series of test events taking

place in the build-up to the 2012 Olympics.

Around 140 world-class riders representing 21 national teams raced along the 140km route, which followed the course of the London 2012

Cycle Road Race, starting and finishing at The Mall and weaving through five Surrey boroughs. Weybridge was just one of several towns along

the route, which also took in Walton, Byfleet, West Byfleet, Pyrford, West Horsley, Gomshall, Dorking, Leatherhead, Oxshott, Esher, East and

West Molesey. Not to mention a few laps of Box Hill! Not for the faint-hearted...

The race allowed the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games to flex their management skills and fine-tune

their planning, ahead of the Games. British cyclist Mark Cavendish, fresh from being awarded the green jersey for best sprinter at this year’s

Tour de France, was the day’s winner, summoning up every last ounce of energy to cross the line with a trademark sprint.

We’ll order the same for next summer then, Mr Cavendish!

I am often asked about both the justification and the pitfalls of investing in art – and I have clear views in both directions.

Justification first.Whenever you make an investment, it usually comes with a caveat, which says something like ‘investors should be aware of the fact that the value [of this investment] can both rise and fall depending on market conditions’. The same, of course, applies to investment in art. But there is a difference.

ART WORKS

Art is an unusual investment that brings so many additional dimensions. Hang a piece of art on the wall of an empty room and you have created a focal point. Nothing else is necessary – that’s why art galleries are usually rather minimalist. Place any other piece of furniture in an empty room and you are likely to achieve function – but not effect. Of course this scenario is unlikely to be the practical challenge of the average art collector – but the principles remain. A carefully selected piece of art in any room, including kitchens and bathrooms, is not a finishing touch – it can create the focus, the very atmosphere, of the room. And that means aesthetic as well as potential financial reward. Much more pleasing than an on-line assessment of investments – and in today’s world may be more secure than many because it’s tangible (have you seen the price of gold recently?).

I will be considering some of the other aspects of ‘return on investment’ in the coming months with ‘Artworks’. In short buy wisely – do some homework and learn a little about the artists that are ‘trending’ (to use Twitter-speak). But also listen to yourself. What is going to make a positive difference to your world? And as we will see in coming months – possibly a positive difference to your life.

The pitfalls? Just one overwhelmingly important rule to stick to – and that is being certain about the authenticity of your purchase. The art world is open to forgery and it is also open to fraud. Modern printing techniques enable impressive copies to be manufactured by the unscrupulous. Buyer beware. Expect a certificate of authenticity. With older works of art you can sometimes have the benefit of ‘provenance’ – a documented history that sets out the journey that it has taken in its journey through life so far.

ARTWATCHOver the coming months I will be taking a look at some of the artists that are gaining popularity in the market – my ones to watch.

With his work described by the Sunday Times as “thrilling” and “virtuosic”, Darren Baker has become one of the leading painters of the Classical Realism genre. His recent appointment as an official artist to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, has enhanced his extraordinary status and this has been further confirmed with a commission to paint an official portrait of HRH Queen Elizabeth II which is due to be unveiled in 2011. His paintings are increasingly sought after by international and British art collectors and hang in both public and private art collections including those of the House of Lords, Downing Street and St James’s Palace.

Danielle O’Connor AkiyamaDanielle is a Toronto-based Canadian artist who has been painting for 30 years. Having studied Art Therapy, she worked with people of all ages helping them to achieve personal change through the use and enjoyment of art. Since leaving her work as a therapist Danielle has dedicated herself to a life of painting, but her understanding of psychology has had a profound influence on her inspirational images.

For Danielle seeking out the ideal working atmosphere is an essential part of the creative process. For this reason she has set up a beautiful studio at her lakeside cabin which offers the perfect retreat, with light, space, and idyllic surroundings and, most importantly, the peaceful opportunity to get in touch with her inner voice.

Danielle’s style is loose and impressionistic, however she has always believed in the importance of each and every brush stroke. In order to gain a greater understanding and technical skill she studied sumi-e, Japanese brushpainting. Her distinctive fusion of eastern and western artistry has led to her works being highly prized by art collectors from both sides of the Pacific.

Danielle’s latest collection of Limited Editions entitled ‘Colour Me Joy’ is typical in the vibrancy of palette, and the loose formal structure certainly recalls Danielle’s celebrated florals, and yet we see her moving into a radiant new world of abstract interpretation. An uninhibited vigour and freedom of style combines with a luminous hand finished glaze to give these magnificent canvases an unprecedented impact.

Danielle O’Connor Akiyama is to visit The Lemongrove Gallery, in Marlow, on Saturday 17th September between 6pm until 8pm to launch her latest Collectable Limited Editions and some previously unseen Original Paintings at a Champagne reception.

Casts, crews and friends of the Windsor Globe 2011 season mingled

with guests at a black-tie party night on August 5th at Alexandra

Gardens, in the shadow of the town’s famous castle.

Acts entertaining the crowds included the multi-talented musician,

actor and singer Derry Pope who had also called the tunes as Musical

Director on the Windsor Globe’s production of Wind in the Willows.

Production cast member Richard Marsland also took the opportunity

to sing a few tunes.

The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre blew the socks off the

audience with their award-winning humour, courtesy of the behind-

the-scenes genius of Kev F. Sutherland, famous in comic circles of

a different kind as the writer and artist of The Beano’s Bash Street

Kids adventures. Choreographer Josh Barrow was the happy chap

performing with the otherwise all-female, Reading-based troupe,

Profits from the event will go to two charities, Sunninghill-based

illnesses and their families, and the redeveloped new facilities of the

Hard fought comeback

Page 31: Splashlight - Your local celebrity magazine - September 2011

You’re back to your best with a new album Killer Sounds.

The label [Atlantic] have been really good and were happy for us to go

off to LA to make the album we wanted. They could have said “Guitar

bands are out of the loop for the next 10 years, no thanks and goodbye”

but they didn’t.

There was no expectation, no pressure. We were in there making music

for the hell of it, experimenting – and that’s how you get creative.

Now we’ve had this time off, at the back of my mind I’m thinking about

coming back and doing well, but no one knows what people are going to

be listening to. The only thing we can do is be true to our hearts. That’s

why people bought into us in the first place.

We just wanted to make a record people can dance to. When we made

the first album, we were listening to dance music, hip hop and soul, as

well as rock bands, and that’s what we’ve gone for again.

Your debut album, Stars Of CCTV, shifted 1.1 million

copies worldwide then two years later, your follow-up

Once Upon A Time In The West, while going straight in

to the chart at No 1, sold just 261,000 around the globe.

Are the halcyon days of guitar bands selling lots of records

seemingly over?

Those glory days of guitar music lasted about two years in the middle of

the last decade. Things had already turned when we came back with our

second album. It was vicious, the bottom dropped out of the industry

almost overnight. There weren’t many big guitar albums after that point,

none that had the same impact as before anyway.

We toured the first album for two years, then we were suddenly making

another record. The label were involved and had loads of ideas, at the

same time as being worried record sales had fallen off the edge of a

cliff. Downloading had kicked in and no one knew what to do. Despite

that, the label wanted our second album to be even bigger than the first,

delivered to a deadline to fit in with their sales targets.

After touring Once Upon A Time In The West around the

world for 18 months, you played one of your last shows in

Nashville, Tennessee, which led to a trip around the USA’s

other cities of musical heritage; Austin, New Orleans,

Detroit and Memphis.

We’re huge geeks, so we went to all the classic places. We went to the

Motown studio in Detroit, soaked it all up and got really inspired. By the

beginning of 2009 I had a new batch of songs written and ready to go.

All you then had to do was wait for producer Greg

Kurstin (known for his work with Lily Allen, Marina And

The Diamonds and KT Tunstall) to find a window in his

schedule.

IWe want to work with the best producers, so to get those people, you

have to fit in with them.

Do you feel you’re back to your best? It certainly sounds

like it with the confident swagger on the record that made

Stars of CCTV so popular.

I’m in no doubt about the quality of the album we’ve made. Everyone

thinks that every album released has to be massive, and that every show

should be in an arena sell out but you can’t be on The X Factor every

week, getting millions of pounds worth of advertising for free. You just

have to get out there and do it, and we’ve gone back to that harsh reality.

We’re excited to be back, to be here and be touring again. We haven’t

played much for a while, but what we have done has been amazing.

It feels like the first time around again. We don’t expect to be walking

in to No 1 albums again, or sold-out arena tours. We have to let people

know what we’ve got to offer again. And that’s enough.

Hard-Fi’s third album Killer Sounds is out now.

When the Staines four-piece Hard-Fi emerged in 2005, they were one of the biggest bands in the country. Singer Richard Archer, guitarist Ross Phillips, bassist Kai Stephens and drummer Steve Kemp’s debut album Star of CCTV was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize and two Brit awards in 2006. Their forthcoming third album, however, as Rich explains, is something of a comeback. He also explains why, even after the huge drop in album sales, they’re feeling more positive than ever.

Now, we know that beautiful gardens need plenty of water but really, did we need quite so much of it on Sunday 7th August? Thankfully

the downpours didn’t manage to dampen the spirits of the visitors who donned their waterproofs, hoisted their umbrellas and headed

They were on display as part of the National Gardens Scheme, just two of over 3,700 gardens across England and Wales which open annually

to raise funds for nominated charities. Every year, over 750,000 visitors come to inspect green-fingeredness of the finest kind in (mostly)

private gardens, potting an impressive £2.5 million for charity funds!

Team Don Beni. It has a nice sound – and so do the hooves of the ponies when they thunder around the field. Yes, my love of polo continues and I just wanted to mention the ‘new team’ before we head off to dine in Bologna.

Polo and food have different characteristics. In polo you can form the greatest team of players, with fantastic skill and experience, riding the finest ponies – but the run of the ball on the day can give you a result you are not expecting. (Indeed team Don Beni suffered that fate in their last outing, despite heroics from Nacho Gonzalez – also of team England). On the other hand if you form a team that consists of a talented chef, a great recipe and the finest ingredients the result is a lot more predictable.

At the same time, there are similarities. Polo and food are, for me, equally enjoyable.

And so to Bologna.

Bologna is my family root. I can rely on the knowledge that throughout history the Beni family has played its part in this beautiful city. I will not share all the details with you – you know, it’s an Italian thing – but rest assured that my roots are strong.

Ristorante DianaHead to the city centre and a street named Via dell’Indipendenza and you will discover my Italian culinary heaven: Il Ristorante Diana. Fifty years in the making this is the finest restaurant in Bologna – in fact arguably the best in Italy – and is the chosen place for the rich and the famous to eat. It delivers Bologna at its best. Start with Antipasti – perhaps a selection of Diana’s best-cured meats, cheese or fish. Then – perhaps no surprise – it’s time for pasta, or ‘Primi Piatti’. Among the fresh pasta dishes, the restaurant’s specialties include tortellini in broth, ricotta ravioli, lasagna and tagliatelle – all hand-made of course. Another unique part of Primi Piatti is Diana’s trolleys of boiled and steamed meat. Secondi Piatti offers grilled meats Diana, including dishes such as Kidneys Trifolato, along with Contorni – side dishes of vegetables and salads. It’s good. Bologna has a reputation for food world-wide and Restaurant Diana represents brand ‘Bolognese’.

Come dine with me – in BolognaFrancesco Beni’s world of food – and other things

Francesco Beni is the creator of Don Beni – passionately Italian restaurants in Eton, Winkfield, Crowthorne and Wokingham. The food is inspired from his travels and the atmosphere from his personality. Noisy, friendly and family.

Try the TagliatelleWherever you travel you can be safe in the knowledge there will always be a place (or a jar) nearby that will offer you that old Italian friend – Spaghetti Bolognese. Sometimes it is magnificent – like a Ferrari winning a home grand prix. Sometime the chef-recipe-ingredient team is not so strong, and you end up with a Fiat 200. (I know they don’t make one – but use your imagination).

But for me, with this type of dish, I have to return to my youthful roots. Try Tagliatelle Bolognese – prepared the successful Ferrari way, in Bologna. A touch of pork mixed with the beef, with butter in the middle. I challenged my chefs to deliver the perfect Bolognese. It’s as close as it gets…

August 29th 1911 was a landmark date in aviation history, as it was

on this day that 47 year-old Hilda Hewlett became the first British

woman to receive her pilot’s licence.

Hilda, a wife and mother of two, didn’t appear to be a likely aviation

pioneer, but she had recently purchased a Farman, named The Blue

Bird, and under the pseudonym Mrs Grace Bird, and accompanied

by the engineer Gustave Blondeau, had learned to fly and repair it.

It was with Blondeau that she established a successful flying school

at Brooklands motor racing circuit, a school which became the first

to graduate both a fully-fledged pilot and an army officer pilot. It was

also the location where Sopwith was to take his first pilot’s lesson.

Members of Hilda’s family attended the Hilda Hewlett Centenary

Celebration at Brooklands in Weybridge, held in partnership with

the British Women Pilots Association. The event honoured the

remarkable woman who went on to become a flying instructor, and

also developed a business building aircraft for the Royal Aircraft

Factory during the First World War.

A break from work...Ben Hargreaves, originally from a small village just outside Leicester has been living and working in Henley on Thames for the past five years. Owner of design company in8 ltd, Ben supplies web and graphic design services to many of the local companies in the area.

In 2009 the challenge was set to race downhill mountain bikes with a goal of racing in the national series within a year. Fort William, Scotland (one of the toughest courses on the world cup circuit) was the target and with a lot of falls, injuries, crashes, training and steep learning curves this goal was accomplished within the year. The problem with such a quick rise through a dangerous sport was injury and a lack of experience. In August 2010 just over a year ago, things went wrong.

“In August 2010 things went wrong...”

Racing at round five of the British Downhill Series in Moelfre, North Wales, a slight error of judgement in qualifying almost ended his ability to ride again and potentially the ability to walk.

An air ambulance to hospital for a CT scan showed a compressed and supected unstable fracture of his T12 vertebrae which prompted a transfer to a specialist in Liverpool where eighteen x-rays and a full body MRI scan showed he was in a bit of trouble. Managing to avoid wires, pins and a lengthy operation a full back brace was issued and worn for the next three months.

In November 2010 he was given the all clear and was OK to start light exercise, expecting to take up to 18 months for a full recovery. In January 2011, nearly two stone overweight, he signed up for the full DH series again, starting in March. This would be the incentive to get fit, lose the weight and get back on the racing scene. Ben ran

his first half marathon in late February and went on to race the BDS for the rest of the year, as well as the Megavalanche in Alpe Díhuez, France.

Since turning 30, Ben has clocked up numerous miles with his adventures. Skydiving in Spain, racing the world’s toughest downhill race (the Megavalanche) in France, twice; participating in Tough Guy, the safest most dangerous event in the world; learnt to joust and sword fight to name but a few.

OK, so Ben isn’t a professional freerunner, a trials expert or a stuntman, although any of these would be his number one career choice! However, he does like to push the envelope and find his limits. Over the next few months Ben is going to be trying out different sports and activities in your area in an attempt to demonstrate how accessible they are. If you’ve never been on a bike, or jumped off a diving board or ridden a skateboard then this is the time to start pushing your own boundaries.

Whatever it is you’d like to do, the aim of the adventure section is to cover the basics of getting into that particular sport, where to start, which shops to get your kit from, who to talk to and a simple overview of how he’s got on with the experience.

teMptInG Feteannual event held In lIttle MaRlOW

A village fete has been marked on the August Bank Holiday Monday calendar

for over thirty years for the residents of Little Marlow, and on the afternoon

of the 29th last month, attendees – of both two legs and four – made their

way to the recreation ground to enjoy this year’s fun.

To the sound of a Calypso band, visitors joined members of the Little Marlow

parish to enjoy traditional fairground attractions, stalls, games, displays and

competitions, plus that essential fete favourite, the tea tent.

Congratulations to all the rosette winners of both human and canine variety

on the day and to the event organisers too, who were delighted to raise

the fine sum of £6,000. This will be used to benefit local amenities, as to be

decided by public vote.

Beauty. By Nicole

TREATMENT OF THE MONTHOur treatment of the month is Hyperhydrosis. This treatment helps prevent excess sweating under the arms, the palms of hands, and soles of feet. It prevents sweat or deodorant stains forming on clothes, an obvious sign that someone is a sufferer. A topical anaesthetic is applied in the area to be treated to allow for a more comfortable treatment. The actual treatment is very quick and can be administered within an hour, making it suitable as a lunch time treatment.

Nicole Robinson is clinic manager at Renew Medica, Weybridge – part of a group of 12 clinics in London and the south east that specialise in skin, body and anti-ageing treatments. Renew Medica can help to reduce the appearance of scars, stretch marks, acne, fine lines and wrinkles and also offers treatments for permanent hair reduction and excess sweating.

dangers, myths and legendsIn this month’s edition I will be covering some of the myths – and the dangers – that surround the medical aesthetics industry.

During my twenty years in health, beauty and aesthetics, I have seen and heard about many issues and concerns surrounding treatments such as Laser and Botox.

Unfortunately, stories about the dangers that come with (often) unlicensed use of these treatments have left some people in fear of ever trying them, and therefore missing out on some of the fantastic results and benefits they can deliver. In reality, so long as they are administered within the correct environment, by experienced doctors, dentists and nurse prescribers, then they are perfectly safe and you should suffer no adverse effects.

Health and beauty treatments are designed to make you feel better about yourself. It is tragic when it has the opposite effect. So let’s start with the dangers.

Laser & IPLLaser and IPL machines have recently become available to purchase for use at home. This means that there is a risk of people attempting to treat themselves – as well as family and friends. Using this type of equipment without understanding of the potential consequences that can occur if used incorrectly, is simply dangerous.

Treatment and power settings have to be used very carefully and very precisely – and not just to achieve the desired results. If the wrong treatment settings are used, negative results will occur, such as disappointing levels of hair reduction or, worse still, burns to the skin. So it’s absolutely vital that the user is experienced and qualified to undertake this type of treatment.

Furthermore blindness or damage to the eye can occur if the laser or IPL is misused. Goggles should be worn for all Laser and IPL procedures to prevent this occurring. It is essential for the safety of both individuals during the treatment.

It’s also important to know that treatment of the wrong type of hair can actually stimulate hair growth rather than reduce it! This can be assessed by an experienced aesthetician in a clinic environment before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.

dangers, myths and legendsAnti-Wrinkle TreatmentsBotox has been used for 40 years within the medical profession for patients that suffer with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, as it helps to relax and block nerve impulses alleviating some of the discomfort for sufferers. Botox has more recently become a treatment available to soften lines and wrinkles. It is also very beneficial for excess sweating on the hands, feet and underarms, with the effects lasting for about 3-4 months.

It has become a popular topic of discussion, and worryingly it is now available to purchase for home use, usually via the internet, with instructions on how to administer the ‘correct’ doses for different areas. Speaking from my own experience, this is very disturbing. Firstly you need to be sure that what you have purchased is a safe and licensed sterile product. Issues that can occur with misuse include severe ptosis which is a droop in the brow sometimes making the eye close altogether. This does usually rectify itself over time but in the short term can look awful.

Only registered Doctors, Nurse prescribers and Dentists should prescribe and use botox in this country and there is a reason for this. Specific muscles and specific doses need to be targeted and this varies from person to person. There is certainly not a ‘one size fits all’ approach that can be considered safe. Skill and experience of the practitioner is required for natural and safe results.

The Myths (and the answers)We get asked a lot of questions during our consultations for Laser, IPL and Botox, and I would like to share some of the questions and answers.

Is Laser or IPL a permanent method of hair reduction?Yes. Laser and IPL are both permanent methods for hair reduction and amazing results can be achieved through an initial course of 6 to 8 treatments administered 6 weeks apart.

It is impossible to say that all hair treated will disappear and be gone forever, as hormones play a significant part in the development of the hair grown on our bodies. What’s more, different phases in our lives and changes in health or medication will be the determining factor as to how long lasting the treatment will be.

Some people will experience life-long results through one course of these treatments, whilst others achieve great results – albeit with some hair still present, but this is usually easily managed through top-up treatments.

Is having Botox treatment painful? Many people are put off having Botox treatments as they think it will be painful. In fact, it’s a very quick and relatively pain free procedure that can be done within a lunch break. Minimal redness or small bumps will occur immediately after the treatment, but this dissipates within 30 minutes or so.

It is usual for the full impact and results to take up to 2 weeks to be seen. At Renew we offer a complimentary follow up appointment to enable the doctor or nurse to check the results and administer a slight dose adjustment should this be necessary.

Will people know I have it done? Because it can be a lunchtime treatment it does enable people to be discreet about having Botox. Mineral make-up can be applied immediately after treatment to conceal the tiny injection sites – and when they return for a follow-up appointment, it’s great to see their skin looking fresher, less lined and with a very healthy glow!

Will I get a frozen expression? There is no reason for treatment to cause a frozen facial expression – which is another myth – as the aim is to simply soften the lines present without stopping all the natural movement in the area.

How can I be sure I am getting the right treatment? All licensed practitioners will be registered with IHAS (Treatments You Can Trust) as this governing body ensures safe practice for all injectable treatments including Botox and Fillers. Be sure to look out for this when visiting a clinic to ensure you are in safe hands with an experienced doctor, dentist or independent nurse prescriber.

These are before and after photos of Jennifer – a client who had Dermal Fillers to help regain her confidence. This shows that when administered correctly by a qualified individual, the results can be life changing. Treatment performed by Doctor Toni Phillips.

RetRO FestIval at WhIte WalthaM aIRFIeld

‘Wings & Wheels, Speed & Steam, Music & Dance’ were on the menu at this year’s Retro Festival held at White Waltham airfield. Hundreds of

classic cars and trucks were on display alongside steam engines, caravans, buses and motorbikes. The Big Black Hanger Stage and The Spitfire

Pavilion Stage played host to 16 live music acts over the weekend including ‘Adam Carter is Elvis’, Rockabilly band ‘Lights Out’, ‘The ConChord

Big Band’ and Queen of Jazz and Swing – Alice Harvey, accompanied by pianist Eugene Portman. The two outdoor dance floors were put to

good use, with some serious rock ‘n’ roll shapes being thrown until late on Saturday night.

Thousands of festival-goers of all ages gathered over the weekend to enjoy all the fun of the fair and were treated to spectacular air displays

and a vintage shopping village... and not forgetting Europe’s oldest motorcycle sports show – ‘Messham’s Wall of Death’ a truly hair-raising

demonstration of acrobatic motorcycle stunts on the smallest and steepest (i.e. vertical!) race track in the world.

Disappointingly, Splashlight didn’t win the prize for the ‘Best Period Costume’ despite digging out our poodle skirts, Levis and leather jackets

especially. Never mind there’s always next year!

History is hot property at the moment; various television

programmes, bestselling historical fiction, booming heritage

visitor attractions...

Yes, we’ve had At Home with the Georgians, Edwardian Farm, Victorian

Pharmacy, National Treasures Live and more. The Historic Royal Palaces

[Hampton Court, Kensington Palace, the Tower of London, the Banqueting

House and Kew Palace] are doing really well in terms of visitor numbers as

are the National Trust properties and museums.

When times are tough, people seek security and reassurance from the

past and they enjoy the escapism of history. I would love to say that our

visitor numbers are just because of the excellence of our exhibitions but

I must admit that there are economic factors too; a lot of people aren’t

going on holiday so they may take a day out in London instead. We have

many visitors from abroad at the moment too because of the attractive

exchange rates.

The subject of your forthcoming talks is the history of the

home, the focus of your TV series If Walls Could Talk which

found you researching history first-hand.

Yes, such as sleeping the night in a rope-strung bed.

Portraits often show people sitting propped up to sleep

and after spending that night I concluded that it was for

comfort because the beds were so saggy. I’d never have

known that otherwise. My hands-on research was all

just brilliant, I even really enjoyed using urine to get the

stains out of Tudor laundry, as they did! The least fun was

when I went for a week on a Tudor personal hygiene

regime, which meant no bath or shower, no shampoo,

deodorant or toothpaste. Oh, it was awful!

With so much historical material to draw on,

how do you focus your talks?

I show the audience pictures of the different rooms in

my own home and then I take them through the history

behind each type of room. One hundred years ago, the

bedroom wasn’t a private place, you’d have shared it

and even your bed with all sorts of people. Even your work colleagues, just

think about that!

Bathrooms didn’t even actually exist until around then. Medieval people

were happy to wash themselves, but then you get the so-called ‘dirty’ 16th

and 17th centuries, when contemporary medical understanding meant that

washing was considered dangerous. Bathing starts to come back in the

18th century and only really becomes a regular, everyday habit (for the rich

at least) during the 19th century.

The living room is really fascinating because there, people tend to present

the best side of themselves as it is the room where guests are going to be.

In someone’s living room, you can really ‘read’ them from the sequence of

clues spread out before you; books, photos, decorations, warmth, smell,

light levels, cleanliness… all these things are quite revelatory.

Which era would you time travel to?

One after the invention of anaesthetics! I’d also like to visit Tudor Hampton

Court to check whether the rooms that we have recreated are accurate

and similarly, Kew Palace during the period of George III’s so-called

‘madness’.

Do you have a favourite artefact from the Historic Royal

Palaces collections?

I am very, very fond of the Tudor piss-pot (their words, not mine!) that

was excavated from the Privy Garden at Hampton Court. When the

archaeologists examined it they discovered that it still contained traces of

genuine, Tudor urine. What a connection to history!

Talk us through the hot date with Johnny Depp

that almost was…

He was at Hampton Court filming The Libertine and his

location manager phoned and asked if I could stay late

to show him around the rooms. I was supposed to be

going out to a party with my boyfriend that night, so

I had to phone him up and tell him I was going to be

spending the evening with Johnny Depp instead. He was

furious!

I waited and waited and eventually I had another call

saying “really sorry but Johnny is tired and he has gone

back to his hotel.” So I leapt onto a train and went to

the party, where I told everyone there that I’d stood

him up, instead!

Lucy’s new series Elegance and Decadence; The Age of the Regency, is

currently on BBC4. Lucy will be talking on the history of the home in Chiswick,

Windsor, Marble Hill, Henley on Thames, and Walton in forthcoming weeks. See

www.lucyworsley.com for details.

If Walls Could Talk is published by Faber (hardback rrp £20.00) and will also be

out in paperback in early 2012.

Lucy Worsley is the history teacher you always wish you’d had, making the stories of the nation’s past fascinating, informative and relevant to modern times. Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces, Lucy is also a popular television presenter, author and speaker, who’ll soon be appearing at local venues to share her insight into the history of the home.

11 minutes and 33 seconds – now that’s what we call a super fast pub crawl! Four Beaconsfield

locals, dressed as the rock band ‘Kiss’, drank their way to victory in this year’s Stretcher Race,

necking half a pint of beer at each of the seven watering holes along the course.

The stretcher race, resurrected four years ago as part of the annual Beaconsfield Country

Fayre, was founded in 1978 by Gordon Kirby and raised funds for charity for 21 years before its

demise in 1999. For the second year running, the hugely popular Children’s Stretcher Race took

place before the main event, with ‘The Jelly Tots’ scooping first place. Participants aged between

8 and 12 years old stretchered their furry teddy bear patients to the top of Windsor End and

back again with refreshments (of the non-alcoholic variety) at stops along the way.

All the fun of the Fayre was to be had alongside the races themselves, with a classic car display,

climbing wall, stalls, petting zoo, live music, traditional children’s fairground rides and a balloon

race amongst the many attractions enjoyed by an estimated 6,000 visitors throughout the day.

The money raised from this year’s event will go towards St Mary’s Church and Iain Rennie

Hospice At Home, which has been providing 24 hour home support for terminally ill patients

and their families in the Chilterns area for over 25 years. Co-organisers The Round Table,

Rotary and Lions Clubs will also nominate their own charities.

Splashlight didn’t have a stretcher to race with, but we did show our support by drinking the

allotted amount of beer in an almost race-winning time!
