Today, Spertus’ leadership offerings range from graduate degree programs in Nonprofit Management and Jewish Professional Studies to continuing education workshops on grantwriting and strategic planning. We provide certificate programs and cutting-edge seminars on an array of topics relevant for contemporary leaders, organizational managers, philanthropists, and volunteer trustees.
Recently, individuals representing many of the major Jewish organizations in Chicago completed an unprecedented Certificate in Jewish Leadership, which Spertus proudly co-sponsored with Northwestern University. In November, Spertus hosted a critically important community-wide discussion on women in leadership. And within the past few weeks Spertus faculty presented at international leadership conferences in both the United States and Canada.

Meet Spertus Shop Buyer and Manager Jill SevelowBy Lori Finkel for Spertus
With a career that spans education, publishing, and retail, Jill Sevelow has worn many hats. Now we’ve snagged her as the buyer and manager of the Spertus Shop. I coerced her with a cup of coffee in exchange for a glimpse into what she’s cooking up in her new position.
Lori Finkel: So what have you been up to before joining us at Spertus? Jill Sevelow: I’ve had an eclectic career. I began as a preschool teacher and taught at the JCC in Flossmor. I also worked as the associate publisher of World Jewish Digest in Skokie. But my real passion has always been retail. My first job in retail was at Kline’s, an independent department store in Chicago Heights. I was the buyer for handbags and accessories. Later I went on to own my own upscale retail shop in Buffalo Grove called Encore Wear.
What do you enjoy about the Spertus Shop? I love the ambiance and the look of the store. It’s such a beautiful space! I get so excited to bring in new items, especially when I find something new and different that no one else is carrying.
What are you looking forward to bringing into the shop? I’m looking forward to carrying pieces from Jewish artists located around the country and in Israel. There’s incredible and interesting work out there. One of the artists I recently discovered is
Rabbi Blacksmith. He’s a practicing rabbi in Indiana, and he makes rustic menorahs, mezuzot, and candlesticks.
What’s your process for finding new and different work for the Spertus Shop? Well Rabbi Blacksmith—I found him in a JUF News article. It turned out he’s my neighbor in Munster, Indiana. His work has already been selling well and there’s clearly a big interest. Other items I find through research. There’re many nights when I’m propped up on the couch with my laptop, not willing to go to sleep because I’m on the trail of discovering something awesome. I love the thrill of the hunt. One new item we just got in is Lemon in a Bottle—An entire lemon is grown right inside a bottle on the trees of the Ein Tzurim Kibbutz in Israel. It makes the Spertus Shop (and your home) smell delicious.
What’s something that you want to continue or implement? I want the Spertus Shop to be a fresh mix of artsy, funky, elegant, and classic. It shouldn’t reflect one person’s taste, but offer something for everyone.

Her first book, Home in the Morning, has been optioned for film by Jim Kohlberg, director of The Music Never Stopped.

While Jews claim ownership for “Jewish Penicillin,” chicken soup’s healing powers (and comforting deliciousness) have been celebrated for centuries by people of many backgrounds in many places.
Maimonides, the 12th-century Jewish doctor and sage, praised the therapeutic value of chicken soup. Earlier still, Avicenna, a 10th-century Persian doctor, referred to chicken soup’s curative abilities. In fact, food historians cite evidence that even the ancient Egypitians regarded chicken soup as a remedy for colds.
Chicken soup’s multicultural popularity makes it a wonderful vehicle to explore variations. Learn the basics of stock, broth, and versions of finished soup from around the world with Chef Laura as your culinary guide.

Tales, Myths, and NightmaresIn Tales, Myths, and Nightmares, Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern introduces a cast of characters he says are “irreducible,” like the spare style and primary colors he uses to set his scenes. His paintings portray fragile survivors who represent the struggle and enduring strength of the Jewish experience.
Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern was born in Kiev to an assimilated Jewish family. He was not formally educated as an artist, but spent a year
studying under Ukrainian satirist David Miretsky. Following Miretsky’s arrest and then immigration to New York, Petrovsky-Shtern turned for inspiration to Russian icons, Ukrainian naïve art, Japanese xylography, and Flemish genre paintings on display at Soviet museums or available in reproduction.
In 1996, Petrovsky-Shtern came to the U.S. to study Jewish history at Brandeis University. In 2003, he joined the History Department faculty at Northwestern University, where he currently serves as the Crown Family Professor of Jewish Studies. He recently resumed his artistic endeavors through the lens of his role as a historian of the Jewish people.

Uncovered & RediscoveredStories of Jewish Chicago Uncovered & Rediscovered is an exhibit series that explores the Chicago Jewish experience. The exhibit unfolds in a series of intimate chapters (each on display for several months on the ground floor of the Spertus building). Using materials from Spertus’ extensive and varied holdings, this project tells the tales of Chicago’s Jewish pioneers, politicians, authors, entrepreneurs, activists, and artists.
Chapter Seven: Jewish Modernists in ChicagoThrough April 26, 2013
This chapter shares the work of an influential group of Jewish artists active in Chicago between 1920 and 1945. Predominantly Eastern European immigrants and first generation Americans, these artists began their careers during the Great Depression as painters for the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The Modernists, as they were called, painted from personal experience and were influenced by the energy of Chicago’s growing metropolis. See works by Todros Geller, A. Raymond Katz, Mitchell Siporin, Fritzi Brod, and others.
Admission to the exhibit and related multimedia screening station is free.

It illustrates the community’s rich history and contributions to Chicago’s growth and development through personal stories, rare artifacts (many on loan from Spertus), and engaging multimedia presentations.

Jonathan Safran Foer on Judaism, Writing, and InspirationJonathan Safran Foer is an author of several bestselling books. His debut novel, Everything is Illuminated, won Book of the Year by the Los Angeles Times. Both it and his second novel, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, have been made into feature-length films. Mr. Foer is the winner of numerous awards, including the National Jewish Book Award. He’s been named one of Rolling Stone’s “People of the Year” and Esquire Magazine’s “Best and Brightest.” He is currently the Lillian Vernon Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at New York University and is working on a TV pilot for HBO starring Ben Stiller.

Tzipi Livni on An Insider’s View of Recent Developments in the Middle EastTzipi Livni is the former Vice Prime Minister of Israel and former Chief Negotiator in the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. She served as Opposition Leader as the head of Kadima, Israel’s centrist political party, from 2009 to 2011. During her tenure in Israeli politics, she also served as Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Justice. An attorney by profession, she received her law degree from Bar-Ilan University. In 2011, Newsweek named her one of the “150 Women Who Shake the World.”

During his lifetime, Felix Mendelssohn was a musical celebrity, regarded as one of the most prolific and gifted composers that the music world had ever known. After his death, however, his legacy was subject to the anti-Semitism prevalent in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
His considerable talents have since been rediscovered, making an examination of his life and work a wonderful and worthwhile journey. Join Spertus, WFMT, and Conductor Stephen Somary for an exploration into the untold story of Felix Mendelssohn. Learn of his yearnings, struggles, and successes through his music, letters, artwork, and more.
This all-day seminar will include a lecture, discussion, and live performances of Mendelssohn’s work.
Conductor Stephen Somary is the artistic director of The Mendelssohn Project, an organization dedicated to the collection of unpublished music, letters, and artwork by Felix Mendelssohn with the goal of presenting previously unknown works through recordings, concerts, books, film, and theater performances. In 2011, Maestro Somary was appointed music director of Amor Artis, a chorus and chamber orchestra in New York City.

Shadows and SojournersSpertus and the Goethe-Institut Chicago present the first North American retrospective of East German films on the intertwined themes of German/Jewish relations, antifascism, and the Holocaust curated by the DEFA Film Library at UMass Amherst. These classics of the East German antifascist tradition depict unique views of the Jewish experience and critiques of Nazi Germany seldom seen by U.S. audiences. Each screening will be followed by a brief discussion and Q & A.

North Shore Community KallahA Community-Wide Adult Education ProgramIn partnership with the North Shore Chavurah of Rabbis, Spertus is proud to again co-sponsor Kallah, a series of free Jewish adult education courses that take place over three consecutive Tuesday evenings in February.
Each evening is comprised of two hour-long sessions with a 15-minute break in between. You are welcome to come to one or both sessions each Tuesday evening.
Session One from 7 to 8 pm A selection of small-group courses are taught by area rabbis.
Session Two from 8:15 to 9:15 pm Lectures for the entire Kallah community are presented by members of the Spertus faculty. This year, these sessions explore Cosmopolitan Jewish Communities at the Edge of Modernity.
A number of large Jewish communities developed in central and western Europe in the centuries after the expulsion of Jews from Spain. These communities were significant for their rich cultural and social diversity, intellectual and religious vibrancy, and their engagement with the non-Jewish world. Join us for a look at three of these communities:

The Certificate in Jewish LeadershipLast year, Spertus Institute and Northwestern University launched the Certificate in Jewish Leadership, a new professional development program. This program combines Jewish scholarship with leading ideas from the contemporary business world to enhance the effectiveness of Jewish leaders. In October the first cohort completed the program, bringing their new leadership expertise to a range of roles in organizations that serve and impact the local Jewish community.

Distance LearningMasters and doctoral programs in Jewish Studies are offered onsite in Chicago and through distance learning. This past summer, Spertus hosted masters and doctoral students—from two dozen U.S. states, Canada, and Israel—for intensive on-campus seminars. Students chose from eight courses on a range of literary, historical, and theological themes spanning the biblical, rabbinic, medieval, modern, and contemporary periods. Students will return to Spertus for intensive seminars March 3–7 and July 7–11.

The MSNM program is offered in three convenient formats: a one-evening-per-week program, an accelerated evening program, and an accelerated daytime format.

Spertus welcomes Dr. Peter M. Ascoli to our Board of Trustees To Dr. Peter Ascoli, being an integral member of Chicago’s nonprofit community is part of his family’s legacy.
Dr. Ascoli is the grandson of Chicago businessman and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, who fashioned Sears, Roebuck and Co. into an American icon, founded Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, and robustly supported education and the arts particularly for the disadvantaged and disenfranchised.
Continuing this important tradition, Dr. Ascoli co-founded Crossroads Fund in 1979. The fund supports community organizations working on issues of racial, social, and economic justice. He has also raised funds for other cultural and educational organizations including Steppenwolf Theatre and the University of Chicago.
The first Spertus faculty member to join our board, Dr. Ascoli has taught at Spertus for 17 years. He currently teaches Revenue Development for Nonprofit Organizations in the Spertus Master of Science in Nonprofit Management program.
Dr. Ascoli enthusiastically explains how rewarding it is for him to work with students in the Spertus Nonprofit program. “I’ve had some absolutely brilliant students. Seeing them advance and helping them has just been marvelous.”
Dr. Ascoli sees his dual role at Spertus as aligning to tikkun olam, the Jewish concept of repairing the world. He said he hopes to be useful in finding innovative ways to raise funds for Spertus and in highlighting ways for the community to connect to Spertus.
“Spertus plays an important role not only in Jewish education but also in the area that I’m in, which is Nonprofit Management…I think that’s very gratifying.”
