Dear Readers,Welcome to the May issue and I hope you all had a lovely Easter. There are some big events coming up over the next couple of months. Firstly, the Downton Cuckoo Fair which is on Saturday 5th May and really is a fantastic occasion. The event attracts around 20,000

visitors each year and makes for a very enjoyable family day out. Secondly, Amesbury Carnival is on Saturday 2nd June - a definite date for the diary and not to be missed. The event is attracting some top UK display teams and you can find out more about it on page 16.

Our communities are also gearing up to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in June and of course the Olympics. What a year 2012 will be and if you’re wondering what 2013 might bring... a Wiltshire Waggy Walkers 2013 photo calendar - that’s what! Trinity Photography together with the Salisbury Dogs Trust, are running a competition whereby entrants are asked to submit a photo of their dog or dogs out and about enjoying themselves in a Wiltshire spot to win the chance to feature in the 2013 local Dogs Trust calendar. Find out more on page 30.

Finally, if you are organising a local community event or are involved in fundraising for a local charity, we are always happy to help promote it for you so please do get in touch. It’s free!

I hope you enjoy the Cuckoo Fair if you’re going and let’s hope the weather is kind to us again.

Property

When it comes to renting a home many house hunters have done their

homework before they turn up at the letting agents’ door and good schools are at the top of their wish list.

Anna Kitching, who manages the lettings department of estate agents Woolley & Wallis said: “We get quite a few families who have examined the Ofsted reports of local schools and know exactly which catchment area they want to be in. Others have not done quite so much research but if they have young families schools are always important. We find that being in the catchment area for the grammar schools in Salisbury is a big draw.”

At the moment there is also a surge in the number of people looking to rent a home for a six month tenancy after selling their own property. Anna reported: “In the current market people do not want to hold up a sale of their house if they have not

found exactly the right home to move into. So they decide to move into rented accommodation. This way they are not holding up the chain of their own sale and they are able to move more quickly as soon as a house they like comes on the market.”

Anna said it can also be an opportunity for house-buyers to test run an area before committing to buying. “Sometimes people, especially those coming from London, think they want rural village life but then they realise it is not what they were expecting. They still want shops and restaurants on their doorstep but village life in Wiltshire and Hampshire is not always like that.”

Anna has worked for Woolley & Wallis in Salisbury for six years after working in lettings in London for eight years before that. Working alongside Anna is negotiator Dianne Farr and

administrator Amy Waddington. Anna said: “At Woolley & Wallis we offer a highly professional and personal service to both landlords and applicants. We receive a great deal of letters and emails thanking us for our service and it is nice to know we have helped people in what can be a stressful process of moving home.”

Woolley & Wallis offers three levels of service for their landlords:

1) the firm can just find the tenant and organise the initial payments and prepare the tenancy agreement; or

2) they find the tenants and collect the monthly rent; and

3) they offer a full management service which includes looking after maintenance of the property.

Anna said: “The full management option really gives peace of mind to the landlords as they

do not have to worry about anything. Tenants often like it best too as they know

they are dealing with a professional organisation who are always available and will sort out issues quickly. It only costs around two per cent more than the rent collection only option and is very good value for money.”

At the moment Woolley & Wallis has a wide range of properties to rent on

its books from large village homes to city centre flats. Recently tenanted properties

include a three bedroomed maisonette in Salisbury for £750 pcm, a grade-two listed cottage in Rockbourne for £950 pcm, a three-bedroom town house in Salisbury for £995 pcm and a five-bedroomed house in Fordingbridge for £1,550 pcm.

Salisbury is looking to become one of only 25 other towns and cities in the country to be

awarded Purple Flag status.Just as the Blue Flag is an indicator of a good beach, Purple Flag is the indicator of where to go for a good, safe night out. Purple Flag is the “gold standard” for town centres at night, it aims to raise standards and improve the quality of our towns and cities between the hours of 5pm and 5am.The accreditation scheme is based on a unique set of standards and towns and cities that meet the standards can fly the flag. Since the launch in October 2009 just 25 centres have been awarded Purple Flags. Keith Humphries, cabinet member for public protection, said: “It is great to see local businesses and organisations working together to make Salisbury a desirable night-time destination for people of all ages. Achieving Purple Flag status would be a great reward for all of this hard work.”

Inspector Andy Noble, from Wiltshire Police, said: “Salisbury Neighbourhood Policing Team wholeheartedly support the Purple Flag bid. I am convinced that the joint work ongoing within the city will continue to reduce violence and make Salisbury safer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners for their support, particularly those within the PubWatch and City Centre CCTV Team.”The partners working on the Purple Flag project include Wiltshire Council, Salisbury City Council, Wiltshire Police, Salisbury City Centre Management, Pub Watch,

Solar panels convert energy to heat to produce hot water Home

If you require cost effective, reliable heating and plumbing engineers then look no

further. Operating throughout the Salisbury area, Aquagas Salisbury caters for all domestic and business client's central heating systems, gas services and plumbing requirements.

Established in 1995, the company has all the knowledge and expertise needed to ensure customers receive nothing but the very best service. The team's reputation has been developed through hard work and reliability, which is why they are the area's number one choice for plumbing and gas related work.

Boiler RepairsBoilers that are over ten years old

waste a lot of valuable energy. No matter what type of boiler you have, the experts at Aquagas can quickly diagnose and repair it, using quality components and parts, and all work is covered with a 30-day labour and one year parts guarantee.

Boiler servicingAnnual boiler servicing is a wise precaution. Aquagas can ensure that your current system is operating to peak performance, ensure against carbon monoxide leaks and prolong its lifespan. Regular maintenance can also help prevent a system breakdown - an unwelcome, expensive situation.

Worcester Greenskies Solar PanelsA typical well sized solar system should provide around 50-70% of the domestic hot water requirements of a home, representing a very worthwhile saving on hot water heating costs. The remaining hot water requirement is provided by the boiler.

Solar panels harness the power in both direct and diffused sunlight, and convert the energy to heat for the production of hot water for the home. The solar panels have been designed as a complement to existing heating systems, which use a store of hot water in a cylinder. The existing cylinder is exchanged for a cylinder with two heat exchanger coils; one from the boiler in the property and a second from the solar panels.

The Worcester Greenskies solar panels are a perfect partner to the new range of condensing Greenstar regular and system boilers, with different models available in both oil and gas, which require a separate cylinder for the storage of hot water. When used together a Greenstar boiler and solar system provide a highly efficient system to give heating and hot water comfort.

Aquagas Salisbury are the local Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer for boilers.

There won’t be many republicans in evidence in London this summer. Even non-royalists will be caught up in the pageantry of Her Majesty’s

Diamond Jubilee celebrations; an event guaranteed, even more so than the Olympics, to lift the nation’s spirits at a time of general despondency. As part of the celebrations The Queen has granted city status to four UK towns: Perth in Scotland; St Asaph in Wales; Chelmsford in England and Armagh in Northern Ireland.

There was another time in history when the country’s collective spirits needed lifting – sixty years ago. Residential streets were closed to traffic so that local communities could hold street parties. Bunting and Union flags hung from lines strung from upstairs windows on either side of the streets. Makeshift tables sagged under the weight of sandwiches, jelly and custard and bottles of Tizer.

Games were organised, one of which consisted of the father of a family threading a needle and cotton which he then handed to his impatiently waiting offspring who would sprint down the road to the mother. The mother would sew a button onto a square of material

which the offspring would then rush to the referee. Not all the families could participate in this game; some of the fathers had not returned home eight years previously.

In the evening we sat round our wireless sets to listen to our new Queen’s speech: “…Throughout all my life I shall strive to be worthy of your trust…” In this speech the Queen also paid tribute to the support of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the speech is as valid and as relevant today as it was sixty years ago.

Times changed. Britain changed; in some cases beyond recognition. But there has been one constant: a tower of strength whose influence will not be fully appreciated until she is no longer with us.

In a much earlier speech, made in Cape Town on her twenty-first birthday, 21 April 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth declared “… my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service…” Well, we all know now that it was to be long. We also know that she meant every word she said.

How differently history would have read had her would-be assassin, Marcus Sarjeant, succeeded in acquiring a real gun and live ammunition. The mentally disturbed teenager fired six blank shots at the Queen as she rode in the Trooping the Colour ceremony on 13 June 1981. He was quickly overpowered by Police Sergeant John Woodcock and St John Ambulance man John Heaseman. He told them “I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a somebody.” And he had written a diary entry: ‘I am going to stun and mystify the world. I will become the most famous teenager in the world.’

Fortunate not to have been shot on the spot he escaped with five years imprisonment. But most notable was Elizabeth II’s majestic reaction to the incident. As her horse, nineteen-year-old Burmese, panicked and reared she calmly brought him under control and continued with the scheduled ride to Horseguards Parade, comforting him with a few pats on the neck while turning to smile at the cheering crowd.

This was, allegedly, the second attempt on the Monarch’s life. According to a retired senior police

officer in Australia he was in charge of an investigation in 1981 after a train carrying the Queen and Prince Philip collided with a large log which had been placed on the track after police and a pilot train had passed along the route. The retired officer, Mr McHardy, who claims to have interviewed suspects including IRA sympathisers says the Australian government issued a suppression order to avoid embarrassment. There has so far been no comment from Buckingham Palace on the validity of these claims.

True or false I doubt that the Queen loses much sleep over these stories. She has, over the past eight decades, proved herself indomitable.

It was the Queen’s consort, HRH Prince Philip, who pointed out that sometimes a position is more important than the person who occupies that position. With typical clarity he had put the concept in a nutshell: if a nation chooses to have a figurehead then there must be a human to give that position substance, but the human is secondary to the position, not vice versa. For the past sixty years we have been fortunate in having a person worthy of that position; a person of supreme dignity and dedication the like of which this country may never see again. God Save the Queen.

“Doggy Dash”, Dogs Trust Open Day

As a letting agent, we are increasingly being asked by private landlords (in other words landlords who find their own tenants and look after the property) to provide a package specifically suited to them. This is typically because many of them have had problems at one time or another with getting the wrong tenants in, tenants not paying the rent or problems in complying with the increasing amount of lettings legislation.

Many letting agents do not offer such a service, however Bassets has recognized that there are many private landlords who want a cost effective option which will ensure that all of the necessary legal documents and relevant checks are in place prior to the let. We can offer a tailor made service to suit individual needs.

For example, where a family member or friend is the prospective tenant but the landlord wishes to maintain professionalism throughout the process, using Bassets “Private Landlord” service could be ideal. Included within this service, we will:

• Reference tenants using a professional referencing company who undertake employment referencing, current landlords reference, credit and identity checks as required.

• Draft the correct tenancy agreements (including any special conditions required) using our extremely comprehensive Assured Shorthold tenancy Agreement

• Register and hold the Damage Deposit with The Dispute Service for the duration of the tenancy.

• Arrange for a comprehensive, independent inventory to be conducted with full colour photographs.

• Produce a “check out” report at the end of the tenancy and deal with any deposit negotiations.

The benefit of this service for any landlord is peace of mind at an affordable cost knowing that experienced, ARLA qualified staff are protecting one of your larger investments.

For those landlords who would like to let their property yet handover the time-consuming legalities to an award winning professional family run estate agent, this service could be the answer.

The Amesbury Carnival and Show will feature two of the UK’s top

display teams in the main arena. This year’s show to be held on the 2nd June is the start of four days of celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee and the Summer Games, and there is every indication that this year’s event will easily exceed the 6000 people who had a great time last year.

M.A.D. recognised as the UK’s number 1 mountain bike stunt team and The Essex Dog Display Team will provide spectacular entertainment in the main arena. Visitors to the show can find out more at www.m-a-d.co.uk and www. essexdogdisplayteam.org.

Giles Wolfe from M.A.D is looking forward to being part of the show –“ we’re thrilled to be part of the

Carnival and Show and have lots of new stunts planned, I’m sure the whole day is going to be brilliant”.

The Carnival procession starts in the town centre in the morning and winds

its way up to Holders Field with a final flourish in the main

arena around midday. Main arena events follow throughout

the afternoon and there is a huge variety of stands, displays, a fun dog

show, fairground attractions, refreshments and a car boot sale.

There is still time to be part of the show. The organisers have sponsorship and promotional opportunities available which are ideal for local businesses or groups.

FAMILYRUNFIRM

The Handy Household - Shining & Smooth with Olive OilWhile you are likely to be aware of the health benefits of consuming olive oil, you may not realise the many other uses of this natural product. Not only is it a good lubricant, as its molecules have the ability to slide easily over one another, but its film can fill rough spots in many surfaces, making them look polished and shiny.

For instance, it has many cosmetic uses. Olive oil can give a closer shave than shaving cream and can also be used to remove eye make-up, by simply dabbing some under the eyes and rinsing off with a face cloth. What’s more, you can massage it into your nail beds to moisturise your cuticles and if you have dry skin, rub in a thin layer after a shower.

Around the house, adding a little to your duster will leave surfaces looking polished and stainless steel will look great when you use olive oil as a shining agent. You can silence squeaky doors by wiping the top of the door hinges so that the oil runs down the sides. Similarly, pour a little onto a cotton bud to get sticky zips moving again.

Even the cat can benefit, because adding a quarter of a teaspoon to your pet’s food will help to prevent hairballs.

So, not only is this ancient oil good for you, it’s also good for your home and your pets.

Riding for the Disabled, Wilton Group, was established unofficially 50 years ago at Grovely Stables in Wilton. Due to the generosity of the

Earl of Pembroke, a permanent home was found for the school, with Pat Burgess as the very energetic instructor and many years later it has become one of the largest RDA groups in the Country. In an average week the riding school is attended by approximately 200 riders with a wide range of disabilities and each rider has their individual needs. Riders are kept safe by a team of volunteers, over 100 each week: some riders need a team of 6 or 7 people to assist in the mounting and from then on 3 or 4 during their ride whilst others may require just one helper. With the endless enthusiasm of the team, riding gradually builds confidence and self-esteem and works wonders on the riders’ balance, coordination and fitness. At the same time it is great fun and gives a tremendous sense of achievement.

The major expense, the care of 17 resident horses, all of different shapes and sizes to suit the riders, and maintenance of the purpose built riding centre are met entirely by fundraising efforts and donations. Each year the Centre needs to raise £65,000 to enable the valuable work to continue. Without the

support of local people and businesses the Centre would have to reassess how the facility is provided, meaning some riders would no longer be able to benefit from this unique type of therapy and the sense of freedom which many of us take for granted each day.

With such high running costs, events play a major part in the fundraising efforts. Events are run throughout the year but the summer months provide an ideal opportunity to hopefully enjoy the weather and the great outdoors whilst raising money for a worthwhile cause.

Sunday May 20th - Sponsored Jubilee RideWhat could be nicer than a sunny Sunday morning ride through our magnificent countryside? RDA Wilton's sponsored ride this year starts and ends at Tidpit Common, with the kind permission of Mr and Mrs Shepherd, Natural England Martin Down and their generous sponsors Landford Stone. The ride will comprise of approximately 10 miles of downland, private farmland and woodland tracks with no public roads to hinder the ride. Also a shorter 3 mile route will be available for the lead rein. Entrants can start their ride from 9am until 1pm with each rider being awarded a commemorative rosette on completion of the ride and also the chance of lifting the annual cup for the most sponsorship collected. Entry forms can be obtained from most Tack and Saddlery shops in the area or direct from [email protected]

Thursday 7th June - Summer FeteOnce again Mr and Mrs Rasch at Heale House welcome RDA Wilton back for their Annual Summer Fete. Half term fun is almost guaranteed! With Jubilee celebrations high on everyone’s list there will be a warm welcome to the Queen of Hearts at Heale House and you are of course invited to afternoon tea with her, the Mad Hatter, Alice and if he can make it in time, the White Rabbit. Ticklish Allsorts will be on hand to keep the children entertained along with a myriad of stalls and attractions and some favourite RDA ponies will be offering rides throughout the afternoon. For those of a more relaxed nature, why not just take the time to wander the quiet surroundings of the Heale House gardens or sit back and enjoy a delicious cream tea,

sumptuous strawberries and mouth-watering ice-cream or maybe even all of them.

The fun starts at 2pm until 4.30pm and entry is £2 per adult.

Keeping Pests at BayMore and more people have become

concerned about using chemicals in the garden, with some gardeners having used

chemicals rarely, if at all, for years. Perhaps you are concerned about wildlife and conservation, or using pesticides on plants that children or pets might play near, or that you intend to eat.

Greener gardening is not difficult, it is just different. Many infuriating pests can thrive in greenhouses and conservatories, but there are now many ‘natural’ controls available in the form of predators and parasites, which can be purchased from mail order suppliers (including www.pippagreenwood.com) and then released indoors. These insects or mites do a great job of keeping common pests at bay, including whitefly, red spider mite and mealy bugs. There are also excellent controls available for slugs and for vine weevils, both of which can be used successfully outside too. Other outdoor pests which can be controlled include leather jackets and chafer grubs and there is even a control to send ants off in the other direction – wonderful if you like to lie on the lawn or enjoy meals in your garden without being nipped!

I garden organically and use biological controls regularly. If your conservatory is also a place where you relax or enjoy a drink or a meal, it is especially important not to fill it with potentially harmful chemicals.

To use these controls you will need to make sure that your greenhouse or conservatory is not already packed full of chemical residues - otherwise they may kill the beneficial creatures you are introducing. For whitefly you need a tiny parasitic wasp called Encarsia and for red spider mite you need the predatory Phytoseiulus mite. Introduce these amongst infested plants and they will automatically search out the pests, soon getting their numbers under control without you having to lift a finger.

It may sound off-putting to release wasps or mites indoors but these little creatures are tiny and will not bite or sting: they are only interested in the pests.

Biological controls are tricky for garden centres to stock, as living creatures won’t survive if left sitting on a warm shelf. Mail order is therefore the best way to buy generally, with your predators or parasites arriving in the post, along with strict instructions for storage and using before the use-by date. But don’t let this put you off: biological controls are excellent and used by professional growers.

To ensure success you must follow the instructions precisely and make sure you introduce the control when there are only a few pests around. If the air is choked with whitefly it can be a bit too much of an uphill struggle for the tiny little wasps. But the great thing is that you can relax in the knowledge that you’re not jeopardising any wildlife and that, in many cases, the biological control becomes self-perpetuating as the ‘critters’ you have bought breed and spread. Now that’s what I call useful.

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for her newsletter (and receive a free ebook on organic gardening) and shop from the new products area which offers a great selection of biological controls (for slugs, vine weevils, red spider mite, whitefly etc) plus growing frames, cloches, raised bed kits and lots, lots more.

FOLLOWING the success of last year’s Amesbury Carnival dog show, GRWE

(Greyhound Rescue West of England) again have the task of choosing 2012’s ‘Carnival K9’, at the event on the Holders Road playing field.

On 2 June GRWE – usually dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of greyhounds and lurchers - will celebrate pet dogs of all breeds and cross-breeds in a dog show with the emphasis on fun. Categories such as ‘waggiest tail’ and ‘most awesome eyes’ opens up the competition and GRWE are looking forward to a cheery afternoon.

Michele, who co-ordinates events for the charity in Wiltshire and is organiser of the show, remembers last year “Kiara’s owner was absolutely thrilled when she won ‘best in show’ particularly as

she’d had some health problems. I think participation in fun dog shows is a great way to socialise your dog and getthem used to all the hustle and bustle.” Rosettes awarded for first, second and third place in each of ten categories with a prize for first place. The winner of each category will then go through to the final judging to determine the ‘Carnival K9’ who will receive a trophy they can keep. Entry is £1 per dog and payable on-the-day, so just turn up as soon as possible after gates open at noon. Please keep all dogs on leads and remember to clean up after them. Owners are responsible for the conduct of their dogs and please take special care around children and other pets. Between judging of classes will be a handler display, courtesy of James Bawden of Bawden Flight Gundogs. James and his team of labradors and spaniels will demonstrate the relationship between man and dog, in the

work that brought them together. Funds raised at the dog show will go to GRWE, a charity which boasts an outstanding success rate for its 761 rehomings in 2011. For more information about how the retired racers will benefit from the proceeds of the fun dog show visit www.grwe.com . Carnival programmes are available from various outlets from May.

Mayor of Amesbury Andy Rhind-Tutt, with last year’s Carnival K9 Kiara, and owner Colin

The Wiltshire Diamond Jubilee event is a celebration event for the communities of Wiltshire and Swindon. The free event will take place in the grounds of Salisbury Cathedral on Tuesday May 1st from 10am to 5.30pm.

A medieval theme will be created in the cathedral close with people in period costume and displays of combat and falconry. Music will help to boost the celebratory atmosphere and a performance arena will be set up for local acts to perform, everything from maypole and Morris dancers to choirs and folk bands.

Community areas in Wiltshire and Swindon, along with voluntary, business and public services will

occupy ‘jousting style’ tents. They will provide exhibits, displays and performances for all to enjoy everything from regency dancers and local breweries to mini canal barges and a life size white horse.

The southern Wiltshire community area is showcasing old and new in an exhibition of activities from its diverse rural communities entitled “Deep roots; new shoots”. This will include The River Bourne Community Farm - including their goats. The Downton Mace, made in c1714, will be on show alongside the Downton Lace display showing the bobbin lace which has been made in Downton since around 1800. This area is also proud of its annual Cuckoo Fair and the young

maypole dancers from across the community area who take part in it will give demonstrations. Recording the history of the area is the Alderbury & Whaddon Local History Group who will showcase their work. Representing the resilience of the communities will be Whiteparish First Responders, trained volunteers who provide life-saving rapid response to medical emergencies in the rural area. Landford Community Partnership will also be demonstrating the array of projects that stem from their recent community plan and to top it off there will be music from Wiltshire’s premier brass band, The Woodfalls Band.

Rotary are quite well known for raising funds at their many events - but what do

they do with the money raised?

Well the Rotary Club of Amesbury are just about to distribute £6,125 on top of £1,275 already given away during the year.

On Tuesday the 13th March 2012 the Club hosted a Cheque Presentation evening at which all recipients were invited to a fun social evening.

Those invited included many well known charities operating in the local area, such as Arthritis, Alzheimer and the Stroke club, as well as several Forces charities supporting children and Garrison Girls.

Some slightly less familiar ones were The Street Pastors, who are out late at night assisting those in need and The Link volunteer car teams who are prepared to drive patients to hospital appointments as well as shopping trips for those in need.

Those who support Rotary events are not forgotten such as the Scouts, Police charity and the Town Bands, so they were also thanked for their help.

The Rotary Club wishes to thank all those who made it possible for these grants to be given away, for without their generosity, none of this would be possible.

The Rotary Club of Amesbury meets every Monday (less Bank

Holidays when it runs a Car Boot Sale) at the Antrobus Arms Hotel, Amesbury at 7pm for 7.30pm.

If you would like more details contact Rotarian John Haywood on 01980 590484 or our incoming President Kathy Gill on 01980 622826.

The people in the above photograph represent the following organisations:

Garrison Girls, Trussel Trust, Amesbury Town Band, Amesbury Scouts, Arthritis Care, St.John Ambulance, Forces Childrens Trust, Amesbury Stroke Club, Link organisations, Alzheimers Society, Lucy`s Day Out, The Macular Society, Salisbury Street Pastors.

We are delighted this month to introduce you to a local photographer who has kindly granted us permission to use some of his wonderful photographs on our magazine covers. Richard Barton, from Salisbury, currently has about a dozen of his local images displayed on one wall next to the

bar in the Landford Poacher at Pound Hill on the junction of the A36 (Salisbury to Southampton Road) and the B3097. Richard told us "whilst I'm strictly an amateur photographer, Mike the landlord, is very kindly showing some of my local images and is keen on showing more so I plan to get out and shoot more." Two large framed images of Salisbury Cathedral have recently sold from the display.

Richard has a website (www.rcb4344.zenfolio.com) and says "if anyone sees something they like I am very happy to discuss different framing options or even supplying an image with mount and backing board ready for insertion into a frame of their own choice”.
