Background information

Regional Academies of Sport in NSW were largely formed by the Department of Sport and

Recreation, following the initiative of a group of businesspeople in the Illawarra who established

the Illawarra Academy of Sport, in 1980.

Academies were developed to provide an environment where talented athletes across NSW could

access services to assist in developing local talent without having to leave home and travel to

capital cities, such as Sydney.

Today, there are 11 NSW Regional Academies of Sport servicing over 2000 athletes annually.

The South West Sydney Academy of Sport was formed in 1997 by the NSW Department of

Sport and Recreation and became an autonomous not for profit organisation, in November

2002.

What do we do?

The Academy seeks to maximize each athlete’s full potential by providing excellence in coaching

and education and also provide a pathway for talented athletes to progress through to the NSW

Institute of Sport, State, or National Level representation.

Programs are provided ‘mainly off season’, so it does not to interfere with athletes wishing to

compete in their home competition. Skill, educational and community values are added to an

athletes normal training and playing schedule.

Who do we service?

Talented junior athletes who either live within, go to school within, or are registered with a sporting

organisation within one of the Local Government areas serviced by the Academy.

The Academy currently provides service to the Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly

local government areas in all Academy sports. Athletes range between the ages of 11 and 19

years depending on the structure of the program.

Partners

Each sports program is conducted in partnership with its relevant State Sporting Organisation, or

peak sporting body. All programs form a part of the sports NSW athlete pathway and provide

athletes with a clear understanding of their sporting career progression.

The NSW Government via its Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation Division, is the principal

financial partner of each Regional Academy of Sport. The regions four local Councils are

Foundation Partners of the Academy and have Board and Sub Committee representation.

These Councils also provide access to sporting facilities for Academy athletes. Campbelltown

City Council also provides the Academy administration centre. Corporate partners provide

financial support to enable the Academy to operate and grow.

Chairperson Report

It is with the greatest of pleasure, on behalf of the Board of South West Sydney Academy of Sport, that I present this the 22nd annual Chairperson Report, for the period July 2018 to June 2019.

It is also my pleasure to report, that the Academy has once again provided high quality sports training and education programs, plus a range of additional sports development opportunities, to athletes’ from across our region. The Academy has also excelled in its provision of wide-ranging sports development opportunities to its coaching and support staff members, including associated volunteer supporters. These now core development opportunities are provided with the view of enhancing the personal development of Academy volunteer staff members and to better service the Academy and their home associations and clubs. The Academy’s sports education program is recognised as one of the best of its kind in the State. And it is most appropriate that I formally recognise our professional providers and our very own staff members, who provide their specialist knowledge and expertise, to support the Academy’s holistic approach to athlete development. The majority of these opportunities have been made available with the assistance of the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE, the NSW Office of Sport - Sport and Recreation, and a range of supportive corporate partners and private education providers. The Western Sydney University has also undertaken a financial corporate partnership with the Academy, which will include ongoing University student placements. The University is to be congratulated for undertaking this excellent education-based initiative.

Finances

The Academy’s financial position continues to be sound and I extend thanks’ to the many corporate supporters of the Academy, for their continued investment in the youth of our community.

The future of the Academy relies heavily on the generosity of its financial supporters and to a greater extent the NSW Government, through its Office of Sport.

Without the ongoing current level of financial support from the NSW Government, the Academy would struggle, to maintain its current level of service community provision.

Our private sector major sponsors such as the Campbelltown Catholic Club and SOUTH32 – Illawarra Coal have been extremely loyal and highly valued supporters of the Academy. And I sincerely thank them on behalf of all our young athletes and the Academy’s wider community.

Sports Programs

The ever-changing landscape of state sporting organisation pathways continue to make it difficult to often maintain and include additional sports programs. And often maintaining fledgling and long-term programs have been a direct result of the hard work of Academy staff members and it’s coaching and support volunteers.

Graduation Dinner The now highly recognised Academy Graduation and Sports Awards Dinner was successfully held at Campbelltown Catholic Club’s prestigious, ‘The CUBE’ Convention and Entertainment Centre. And was once again an outstanding success, with over 600 guests in attendance. The highlight of the evening was the annual ‘Athlete of the Year’ award, which went to outstanding BMX rider Rory Southwell. Rory came back from serious injury to become a Junior Australian representative.

My congratulations also go to retiring, long-serving Academy Softball coaches Fiona Ioannou and

Peter Doherty. And I also congratulate them on the receipt of their ‘Extraordinary Service

Acclamation’ awards.

Recognition At this time of the year, it is most appropriate that I take the opportunity to thank the following organisations and individuals for their continued support of the Academy. The Academy’s major funding partner the NSW Office of Sport - Sport and Recreation remains the Academy’s major funding partner and provides excellent guidance to assist the day to day operation of the Academy. The personal and professional interest, and support of the Academy from the Department continues to be strong and productive and we thank all concerned. The Academy’s relationship with Local Government and its Federal and State Members of Parliament is outstanding, and we thank each and every one of them for their continued interest and investment in the Academy. Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly Councils continue to be great contributors, both financially and in the provision of sports facilities and resources to the Academy.

Media The media across Sydney’s south west region continues to be extremely supportive of the Academy and provide excellent access to their services, via the distribution of Academy print and electronic article opportunities. This in turn has increased the community profile of the Academy and has also provided a marked increase in the awareness of its achievements and sponsorship worth. Volunteers As the Academy continues to strive to secure coaches, support staff members and educators of the highest caliber. I continually remind myself that these members of the Academy are volunteers and that they give their time and energy freely to work for, and on behalf of the Academy. Their reward is seeing the development of athlete sport and community skills first-hand. Knowledge being acquired, confidence growing and maturity emerging in some of the finest young people our community has produced. The Academy is so fortunate to have the time, skill and energy of these fantastic volunteers to provide to our athletes, and I sincerely thank them

I express a most sincere ‘thank you’, on behalf of the Board, for your tireless work and professionalism in administering the Academy’s activities. And for making this Academy such a great success. I am proud to say the Academy continues to strengthen its position as the premier sports development organisation in the Macarthur and Liverpool region.

It is highly recognised for its good community work across our regions sporting, local community and government landscape.

The past 12 months has been an amazing journey for so many, and I congratulate all concerned

with the Academy’s accomplishments.

Chief Executive Officer Report

It is my pleasure to report that the past twelve months have again seen the South West Sydney

Academy of Sport continue its excellent development of recent years.

This year provided a planned greater emphasis on coach and support staff member education,

plus the provision of a wider variety of educational opportunities for Academy scholarship holders.

The past year has seen a slightly increased number of athletes achieve higher level athlete

representative recognition. Over thirty percent of all athletes were selected to represent in one or

more, of the following representative ways.

Selection into the NSW Institute of Sport, State Sporting Organisation ‘athlete acceleration

programs’, ‘emerging athlete programs’, NSW senior and junior representative teams and various

age category Australian teams.

Over sixty percent of athletes achieved regional, or similar school representation.

A further, and most pleasing measurement of the Academy’s value and success is the growing

list of past athletes representing senior NSW, and junior and senior Australian teams.

Academy Recognition

The NSW State Government’s recognition of the strategic and intrinsic value of the NSW

Regional Academies network was again demonstrated through its continued operational

commitment to Regional Academies’. Both individually and via the Academies’ umbrella

organisation, the Regional Academies of Sport (NSW) Inc.

The most recent State election has seen a transition in its portfolio of Minister for Sport, with The

Hon. John Sidoti replacing The Hon. Stuart Ayres. And, it is appropriate that Minister Ayres be

acknowledged here, for his excellent support of NSW Regional Academies, as a group and

individually.

Sports Programs

The ongoing challenge for the Academy is to service the always changing sports program requirements of so many varied state sporting organisations at the one time. And also, within the Academy’s means, be it financial, staffing or resource provision.

An increasing number of state sporting organisations are also providing greater input and clearer ‘athlete, coach and official, development pathway strategies’, with regard to the formation and placement of Academy programs.

Leading sport development organisations, the New South Wales Institute of Sport and the Australian Institute of Sport, have also placed greater importance on the work of Regional Academies. With regard to developing positive sport out-comes in both the athlete and coach development pathways and have substantially increased their engagement with Academies overall.

This form of ongoing quality engagement with sports peak development organisations, is seen to be highly beneficial to all concerned.

Financial Position

The Academy’s continued financial reliance on State and Local Government, plus the corporate

support of the business community, continues to highlight the challenges facing this and all NSW

Regional Academies.

Therefore, it is important that all associated with the Academy remain vigilant in identifying

opportunities to increase all forms of financial support during the 2019/2020 period, to allow the

Academy to continue its services into the future.

In this regard, the Academy has been fortunate in 2018/2019, to again welcome a number of

additional financial corporate partners and also acknowledge an increase in funding by its

‘naming rights partner’ the Campbelltown Catholic Club.

And it is appropriate to acknowledge that the Academy has also retained all of its financial

corporate partners, during the period. This is always a challenging task, recognising the ever-

changing needs of sponsors and also local, national and world economic conditions.

A sincere thank you again goes to our Academy region’s four local governments namely Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool and Wollondilly, for their continued financial and operational support of the vision and operation of the Academy.

These Councils continue to recognise the community value of the Academy in the areas of athlete development, community citizenship development and community engagement.

The Academy has also been supported by local government in the provision of high-quality sporting venues and facilities. And as in previous years, each Council hosted a mayoral civic reception for athletes, their families and support staff members, from within their local government area.

Campbelltown City Council also continues to provide the Academy’s administration centre building, centrally located on Queen Street, Campbelltown.

Sports Education

Sports education sessions were provided at Western Sydney University, Campbelltown Campus, the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE - Macquarie Fields Campus, plus a wide range of various sporting and ClubsNSW venues across the Academy region and wider Sydney. ClubsNSW has also financially supported the development of an excellent suite of sports education resources specifically designed for Regional Academies and commenced its three-year roll-out in 2018. The Academy’s 2019 Graduation and Sports Awards Dinner was once again an outstanding success, with around 600 guests in attendance.

The inclusion of Academy athletes acting as emcees during the evening, was well received and highlighted the outstanding personal skills and attributes of these fine young people.

And the highly contested South West Sydney Academy of Sport ‘Athlete of the Year’ - Chairperson’s Award’ was appropriately awarded to outstanding BMX program athlete Rory Southwell.

The Academy continues to establish its position, as the region’s leading ‘talented athlete’ development organisation. And, its partnerships with its community and corporate partners also continue to grow.

These organisations see true return value in supporting the Academy, be it financially, or in a community citizen role.

A sincere thank you must go to all Academy corporate partners, state and local sporting organisations and contra supporters, who have provided financial and or practical support to the Academy, during the past 12 months.

And as in previous years, a special thank you must go to the Academy’s ‘naming rights’ partner the Campbelltown Catholic Club and its ‘Platinum Partner’ SOUTH32 - Illawarra Coal, for financially recommitting to the Academy.

As stated previously, the Academy continues to develop into something very special under professional direction of its Board of Management.

Academy Chairperson Mr. Peter Campbell, Deputy Chairperson Mr. Ross Kelly and Sport Sub Committee Convener Mr. Ross Morrison, have again provided quality counselling and personal support, in their relevant areas of responsibility.

And the support of the Academy’s Executive, and Sports Sub Committee members has again been remarkable.

I also commend the support and friendship provided by the following individual Board Members, Cr. Theresa Fedeli, Cr. Karress Rhodes, Cr. Karen Hunt, Cr. Blair Briggs, Cr. Paul Farrow, Cr. Charishma Kaliyanda, Mrs. Denise McGrath, Mrs. Michelle Caruso and Professor Gregory Kolt, during the past 12 months.

In conclusion, the past twelve months have again been amazing, and I can only see greater

achievements for the Academy moving forward.

Sports Education

Sports education and sports specific skill development remain the cornerstones of athlete development, for the South West Sydney Academy of Sport. Athletes undertake a selection of core and elective sports career related subjects, in lecture based and practical situations. These educational programs operate in conjunction with the athletes identified skill-based development program. Discussions are held between the Academy staff and each sporting program’s head coach, plus appropriate support staff members, prior to the commencement of the squad season, to best plan the required skill development and elective education content for each sport. The Academy has taken a unique approach to sports education assessment, with a number of subjects containing minor assessment tasks, for athletes to complete. ClubsNSW through its ‘Your local club’ program has also financially supported the development of an excellent suite of sports education resources, specifically designed for Regional Academies. Core subjects include: nutrition, sports psychology, drugs in sport, youth leadership, sports medicine, injury prevention, media training, fitness testing, integrity in sport, financial fitness, mental health and first aid. Additional elective subjects include sports strapping, massage, core strength and flexibility, recovery, officiating, motivation, time management, elite match reviews and additional age specific subjects deemed appropriate for the sport. Sports education sessions are provided in partnership with Western Sydney University, Campbelltown, and the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE - Macquarie Fields, plus a wide range of various sporting venues across the Academy region. A further core component of an athlete’s sports education program is sports specific skills training, which is developed and implemented by the respective sport’s head coach, in conjunction with requirements of the sports state sporting organisation. Each sport also has the opportunity to demonstrate the skills gained through participation in competitions such as Inter-Academy Challenge’s and Academy Games competition. The Academy is continually exploring sports education options and opportunities with internal and external educational service providers, with a view to continue to value-add to the Academy athlete education program.

Community Projects

Coaches Education Program

The Academy coach and support staff member education program focuses on providing additional coaching qualifications and operational education support, to the Academy’s volunteer staff members within the Academy’s region. The opportunity to gain additional coaching related qualifications has continued to assist in the development of regional based coaches during 2018/2019. The program has provided coaches and support staff members the opportunity to complete a Level 2 General Principle’s coaching certification, or Sports Trainer accreditation or, First Aid Level I or II, or equivalent accreditation. The Academy continues to provide articles, resources and education course opportunities for Academy coaches, which have been well received by coaching staff members. Coaching lectures in basic and advanced sports taping, sports psychology and core strength and flexibility have also been provided in addition to the coaches’ participation in the athlete education program.

Athlete Parent Education

The Academy has introduced an ‘Athlete Parent’s Education’ program, where parents of current athletes can participate in education sessions such as Drugs in Sport, Nutrition and Sports Massage.

South West Sydney Institute of TAFE The South West Sydney Institute of TAFE offers a Certificate IV in Fitness or any related subject annually, to an Academy coach, support staff member, or scholarship holder, as part of the South West Sydney Institute of TAFE corporate partnership education program. Macquarie Felds TAFE also continues to offer individual ‘strength and conditioning’ program opportunities to Academy athletes free of charge, a part of its TAFE student education program.

Western Sydney University

The Western Sydney University, Campbelltown Campus continues to provide lecture theatre and classroom opportunities to assist in the provision of education services. 1. The development of quality Academy athlete fitness data. 2. Provided coaches and sports trainers additional practical development opportunities. 3. Increased coaches’ knowledge and ability to deliver quality and up-to-date training

programs. 4. And, provide a platform for coaches to share knowledge and experiences.

Community

The Academy also makes available the use of fitness testing equipment and fitness testing opportunities locally, where and when deemed appropriate.
