Hello all!

Can you believe it’s spring already? Not that the weather has caught up to the fact that it’s quarter way through the year! We are keeping our fingers crossed that the sun makes an appearance for The Dorset Wedding Festival on 7th April. If you could all get out there and do a sun dance, it would be much appreciated. We wouldn’t mind some photographic evidence of that too...a bit of entertainment to brighten our days (cos the sun isn’t doing that much!).

As always, we’d like to thank everyone that has contributed to this issue. We are very lucky in Dorset to have a wide range of dedicated wedding suppliers that can cater for any wedding you can imagine! If you are looking for a supplier and you don’t see anyone suitable in the magazine, please get in touch and we’ll do all we can to help put you in touch with the right person.

Enjoy reading this issue and visit us on Facebook to tell us what you think; facebook.com/SomethingBorrowedMag

Till next time!

Diary of a bride to be

the daily happy hour!A good friend of mine, Sadie, has also been so dedicated to helping us. She is making the scones for our afternoon tea and has already made three different batches to perfect them. A couple of other friends who have cake businesses are also making cakes for the afternoon tea. It’ll be like heaven!

One of the hardest jobs was the seating plan. We wanted to make sure that everyone was sat with people they knew. All I can say is that I hope no one changes their mind, or the bridezilla that is currently deep within me may make an appearance!

On 16th March, Mat had his stag do. They all went go-kart racing and laser shooting and to the pub in the evening. There was a mankini involved but I’ll spare you the photographic evidence! My hen do is the weekend of 12th April and 14 of us are heading to a private campsite for a weekend of glamping, barbeques and fun activities. I am very excited!

Mat and I are both really looking forward to sharing our wedding day with our family and friends but I’ll make sure you hear all about it in the next issue. By then we will have been Mr & Mrs for two whole months!

Sam’s wedding diary...By Sam Birkett

Wedding Diary

Let me first start by saying WHERE THE HELL HAS THE TIME GONE!?

One minute we have all the time in the world and the next, we’re two months away from our wedding.

To be fair though, there hasn’t been a lot of stress, mainly because I felt like there was a lot of time and I have gradually been ticking things off of the to do list.

The men’s suits are all sorted, the bridesmaids’ dresses are all sorted - although my younger sister discovered she was pregnant and will be five and half months on the day, so a quick change of dress was needed.

In February my parents took us away to Gran Canaria for a week. They have been a godsend and we are so grateful for their support. It was amazing for us both to have a rest from the madness of self employment and just shut off and enjoy

budget but I didn’t take that seriously. I got a bit of a shock; the quotes I got back were much more than I had anticipated. However, the florists were really helpful in seeing where I could cut back and I’m very happy with what I’ve ordered now.

At the moment, I’m going through wedding guest list stress. We are four people over the guest limit! It was six people over, so I’ve already had to make a cut. Eek! I have no idea what I’m going to do, maybe invite everyone and secretly hope four of them can’t make it? Answers on a postcard please! I’ve heard that this isn’t even the stressful bit; it’s the table plans I’ve got to watch out for.

James is in charge of sourcing the wedding rings. I am vaguely worried as he has crazy ideas about a wooden wedding ring (!) but he’s really enjoying looking through all the websites and seeing what’s out there. It is very satisfying when you find the same thing for a lower price and he’s determined to have a unique wedding band.

Next month, my wedding dress is arriving. Cannot wait to put it on again, been over a year since I bought it. Some say it might have been a bit early but in my mind, it meant more time to try on more dresses and find the perfect one. In my case, it also meant more time to pay for the dress. I’m definitely going to be wearing it around the house!

It’s come round so quickly, I can’t believe that my wedding is this December! We got engaged in May

2011 so I’ve been patiently waiting. As it’s officially under a year to the wedding now, it’s all systems go. Since the beginning of this year, we’ve booked a photographer, the DJ, the chair covers, centrepieces, flowers and possibly our cake!

I’ve also drafted the wedding invitations. I’ve been itching to do this for ages but we had to wait until after our menu tasting so we could decide on the menu for our guests. That was fun. We got to choose two of each course and effectively had a free three course lunch with house wine! Yum.

Most recently, we booked the flowers. James wasn’t so interested in those, which was great because I could have what I wanted! I’d been told that flowers take up about 10% of your entire wedding

If you want to go for a more unusual silhouette then this fishtail shaped gown is for you. It features a gorgeous pleated bodice with lace and bead appliqué at the hip and skirt. The halter straps and sweetheart bodice create a beautiful neckline and would look fabulous in your wedding day head shots.www.miasolano.co.uk

Any bridesmaid would love to wear this gorgeous dress. The fuchsia pink chiffon really stands out and has a lovely strapless bodice and sweetheart neckline with a sweet little butterfly detail at the waist.

Lemon yellow is a fantastic colour for a bright summer wedding and works really well on olive skin tones. A one shoulder empire line dress suits many body shapes and the floor length gown gives it a touch of elegance.

That’s EntertainmentWeddings are fun - catching up with friends and family, dancing, eating - it’s all

about having a blimmin’ good time! There are some local companies that are dedicated to bringing even more fun to your big day, from photobooths to

sweet carts - we look at what’s available for your wedding day...

PHOTOBOOTH

MAGIC

SWEET CART

Remember when you were a teen and you and your friends bundled in to a passport photobooth? Well, wedding photobooths are even more fun! You can hire a booth company such as gigglebooth.co.uk, or talk to your photographer about setting up an area for photobooth style photos - Jason Perkins has a great time photographing wedding guests with all manner of accessories! www.gigglebooth.co.uk / www.jasonperkins.co.uk

A magician can add, well, magic to your reception. A real crowd pleaser, a good magician can engage with your guests making the time during the wedding photos pass quickly. Paul Newton has been wowing audiences for years, and has many mind-bending tricks that will have guests bowled over!www.paul-newton.co.uk

Lots of brides book a traditional sweet cart ‘for the kids’ but when it comes to the big day, it’s the big kids that are first in line to fill up bags with pick ‘n’ mix. Perfect as an alterative wedding favour, South Coast Sweet Cart can deliver and set up a traditional cart chock-full of sweets. Believe us, your guests will love it!!www.southcoastsweetcart.com

CASINO

BAND

INFLATABLE PUB

“If music be the food of love, play on” said Orsino in the Twelfth Night, and well said we think. Bands can play a key role in your wedding entertainment - getting guests up on the dance floor and keeping them there. A good wedding singer is more than a musician, they need to be able to engage and encourage the audience, making the night lively and fun. Chat to Alexander Clarke about your wedding, he’s one of our faves!www.alexander-entertainments.co.uk

Have your own Rover’s Return at your wedding! An inflatable pub will be a haven for the menfolk - big, squishy walls and beer on tap (plus spirits and wine) perfect for creating a fun atmosphere at your wedding reception. The bar is fully licensed, so you don’t need to worry about a thing when it comes to alcohol at your wedding. www.dorsetmobilebar.co.uk

CHOCOLATE FOUNTAINTiers of flowing, creamy chocolate gently warmed so it melts over delicious fruit or marshmallows. Mmmm. Fundoo Weddings bring a chocolate fountain to your wedding filled with Belgian chocolate, accompanied by dips, sweets or fruit - sure to be a hit with the guests!www.fundooweddings.co.uk

Viva Las Vegas! Create that winning buzz at your wedding with a fun casino - there’s no real money involved so you don’t have to worry about guests going broke, but there are prizes to be won! A casino can keep evening guests entertained without being too over-bearing (after all, you still want people on the dance floor!). Talk to Absolute Fun Casino about their wedding packages.www.absolutefuncasino.co.uk

You ask...

Q Dear Something Borrowed, I have a really hectic life - my job is pretty demanding, my fiancé works away for weeks at a time

and we’re renovating a property. I want to have a sophisticated wedding but I am concerned that I just don’t have the time to plan one! I’ve heard of a few wedding planners, but I don’t want my big day to be taken over by someone else’s ideas. What do you suggest I do? Cally, Sherborne

A Don’t worry at all - a wedding planner can be versatile in their involvement. Some couples prefer to sit back and have their whole wedding planned

for them, others prefer to just have a sounding board and someone to contact and co-ordinate suppliers. Most planners have a recommended supplier list and can often make savings on your behalf, so they needn’t be a huge expense either. We’re lucky in Dorset to have lots of experienced wedding planners - just make sure you ask for testimonials from past couples, look at the weddings they have done and talk about your ideas to see how well they fit with you and your plans.

the wedding doctor

Q Hi, I’m getting married in June and my fiancé and I are currently trying to work out the seating plan.

We both have different groups of friends, and I have a large, close-knit family. We’re not having a traditional top table, and we’ve seated my bridesmaids (my sisters) with their husbands and kids along with my parents. Everyone fits really well in the tables of ten...except me and my fiancé. The solution we have come up with is to sit separately for the wedding breakfast. We’re okay with this, but will our guests think it’s odd? Fiona, Christchurch

AIt’s different - but not odd. Your guests will be happy as long as you are, plus you and your other half will be able to chat to twice as many people! I expect

you have considered things like a sweetheart table (a table for just the two of you) but if not, it’s worth researching (we love Pinterest for ideas). Table plans are really tricky - some families have people that can’t be sat together, it’s hard to guess who will get on with whom and as you say, husbands, wives and their children often need to be seated together. It’s a good idea to use scraps of paper to mock up a plan or you can use a handy app on your iPad or tablet.

It’s your day and if you and your husband to be are happy, then that’s that!

12 monthsResearch a venue and set a date - these two are very much entwined. A venue will ask for a date, but it might not be free then. It’s best to go with a ball park idea and see what is available.

Make a list of what is important to you for your wedding; this will help you determine your budget. If lots of people being there matters, you’ll need to budget for more food and look for large venues. If the setting is top priority, you need to account for this.

Start looking for and choosing suppliers such as a photographer, florist, cake maker and planner.

Browse through bridal magazines, go to wedding fairs and research using the internet to get inspiration for your day. Loads of brides blog about their experiences, so forums are a great place to pick up tips!

Start looking for a wedding dress. It might take just one shop, it might take loads - you just don’t know how many dresses it will take to find ‘the one’ so start look as early as possible.

6 months

Start thinking about your wedding guest list. It might seem early, but you need to know how many people to allow for and find out who has a ‘plus one’ that you might not have met. Ideally, try to meet everyone on your guest list beforehand - it is much less stressful on the day itself that way.

If you have a distinctive engagement ring, you might need a wedding band that fits exactly next to it, so you’ll need to consult a jeweller who can help you create something that matches. Even if you opt for something shop-stocked, you will need to start shopping around now as certain popular styles may need to be ordered in.

Traditionally, the hen and stag parties happen the week or night before the wedding day, but nowadays most brides and grooms choose to have them much earlier. That way you are safe from stag ‘pranks’ and also get more choice on what you can do and where you can go.

Book your honeymoon now. If you don’t know where you want to go, have you considered asking your guests to contribute towards the holiday of your dreams? Websites such as honeymoney.co.uk collect together money gifted to you and let you spend it how you want.

Page 27: Something Borrowed - Summer 2013

3 monthsIt’s time to send your invitations. Make sure you check the postage weight and don’t forget to include a date for people to RSVP by - you don’t want to have to chase people up for responses!

Order your wedding favours. These little trinkets are going to be mementoes of your day, so make sure you get them in plenty of time.

You should have a fair few RSVPs by now, so you can start laying out a table plan for the wedding breakfast. It’s more work than you think, so allow time to make a few variations!

You will need a hair and make-up trial to make sure you look exactly how you want to on the day. If someone else is doing your make-up, you need to let them get to know your face - the last thing you want is to find yourself looking unrecognisable at the alter.

You will need to visit your registrar to pay your fee if you are having a civil ceremony. Make sure you have discussed things like readings, vow wording and music before you go.

1 monthConfirm all of your suppliers - make sure they know where you need things and when. Pay them before the day if possible. You don’t want to have to think about finding cash on the day.

Have your final dress fitting which means no more diets! The last thing you want is to have a final fitting, lose weight and find you don’t fit your dress on the day.

Run through everyone’s duties with them. Some might not have been a part of a wedding before, so giving them time to ask questions is vital.

Book your last colour appointment. It might seem like a good idea to have ‘fresh’ colour on, but it can take a few days to settle, so getting it done earlier is best. Plus, who knows what makes girls want ‘a change’ in the hairdressers chair, but a few weeks to fix any disasters is safer!

Book a date night with your fiancé. Strange as it sounds, many people miss so much during their engagement because they are so focused on the wedding. Take time to enjoy being engaged...there’s not much time left!

Jon and I met at his school leavers’ party - it was a party in a field- there must be something about fields! So we were childhood sweethearts and have been

together ever since.

Jon proposed in Kenya on 22nd May 2011.

He was petrified I was going to give the ring away before he proposed. Little did I know that he had hidden the ring in a pair of his socks in his suitcase. However, all of the Kenyan men ask you for socks and pens so I was openly giving out socks without realising, knowing we had plenty at home. Every time I gave a pair away Jon asked me 20 questions about which ones, what colour they were. It all became clear why after he popped the question!

We had finished our safari which was incredible and arrived back at our beach hotel to enjoy the end of our holiday. We went for a drink at the beach bar and Jon then suggested a stroll on the beach under the stars. He then got down on one knee and popped the question. Afterwards we partied the night away in a Kenyan nightclub, which was different to say the least!

The wedding planning began as soon as we set foot back in the UK. I took the reins with the planning & things started to come together. We very much enjoyed planning the wedding. We had a fab location which was Holton Lee and they were happy for us to do whatever we liked and it was pretty

much a blank canvas. Jon and I are both young and decided formal wasn’t for us so we wanted fun and different for our wedding day, and that it was! We had bunting, fete games, picnic baskets with cream, jam and scones galore washed down with Pimms & cider.

We roped in family and friends and we made everything ourselves - from the table decorations, the table runners, the bunting- the lot. It was all homemade which was such a fantastic achievement to see, especially when guests asked us who we had paid to decorate!

The day itself was everything and more than we had expected. Having had a week of rain in the run up to our big day we had run through back up plans like they were going

real life

Page 30: Something Borrowed - Summer 2013

out of fashion- seeing as most of the day was to be held outside! Weddington boots were purchased but in the end thankfully just became a prop and a fantastic prop at that! The sun was glorious and the sun cream even came out to play! We have decided there is not a thing we would change about the day at all- not a single thing! It was absolutely fantastic and the best day of our lives!

We were fortunate enough to honeymoon to America. We spent just under a month travelling the “best of the west” landing in LA, hiring a Cadillac and heading along the coast staying in a range of accommodation from hotels to lodges in Cambria, Santa Barbara, Monterrey, San Francisco, Yosemite, Death Valley and ending in the fabulous Las Vegas! We had the most incredible time and managed to do everything we wanted and more.

Girls night in...The Five Year EngagementAfter a year of happy dating, Tom proposes to girlfriend Violet. However real life seems to get in the way of their big-day plans.

Interestingly this is the third wedding film we have reviewed that has a British tie-in. Clearly we Brits are wedding-mad!

A great film to watch if you’re finding that planning your wedding has been pushed to the back of a long queue of life events - sad in places, this film does a good job of balancing feel good with day-to-day observation.

The WeddingDove releases, bride and groom songs, Jewish and Christian traditions plus drunken family members - the first wedding in the film is pretty much a cliché American wedding. The second one however has a whimsical twist that I’m sure has crossed many a stressed couple’s mind - we won’t spoil the story for you but this is a great film to watch with your chosen spouse-to-be as it’s not too heavy on the girly romance! The Dress The perfect dress for a relaxed, outdoor wedding - plus we love how Violet gets ready for her big day (we’ll say no more, we don’t want to spoil it!).

We give this wedding movie 3 out of 5 hearts! sss

Meet Lulu. She’s a beauty, isn’t she? A baby blue and ivory 1960s split screen VW camper who spends her days taking brides and grooms to and from their wedding venues.

Before Lulu makes her special journey she’s lovingly washed and dressed. The paintwork and windows get a polish and inside is valeted. Flower garlands and ribbons are added on so she matches a wedding colour scheme.

1Lulu’s next stop is to pick up the Bridal party. Sometimes the bridesmaids travel with the bride, and sometimes the Bride and her dad take the journey together.

Lulu waits patiently until after the ceremony for the newly wed couple for lots of photos or to whisk them away to a second location. Sometimes couples go out for photos and return to the same venue after.

1First Lulu can pick up the boys, since the Groom needs to be at the ceremony before the Bride. Up to six passengers can ride in the camper, so the Groomsmen can all come along (some even enjoy a drink on the way!).

If there’s time, Lulu can pose for photos with the lads - she’s quite the model!

As one of Dorset’s longest established VW Camper hire companies, Dorset Dubhire have worked at venues all over the county. The company also have Lottie, an ivory VW split screen camper van who also takes care of wedding day transportation. Both vans can be viewed on the website, www.dorsetdubhire.co.uk

Allan & I met, originally at school. I was 14 and he was 15. We saw each other for a while but after hearing a

few rumours that he was seeing someone else, I finished with him. We each went our separate ways, met & married other people and had children.

Allan never knew that I used to watch him walking past my parents’ house, every day, from the landing window or that through the years I would find out what he was doing or where he was living from people that we both knew.

When I separated from my husband, I came to spend Christmas with my sister in Poole (I lived in Weymouth by this time). On Boxing Day we went to the local conservative club and Allan was there. He just tapped me on the shoulder, I turned round and saw who it was, and just kissed him. We’ve been together ever since, which is now nine years. On July 9th 2006 my world was shattered when I received a phone call from his best friend, Gordon, to say that Allan was in hospital. He had gone to play golf and was on the first hole when he collapsed. He had had a sub-arachnoid brain haemorrhage and Gordon was calling to tell me that it wasn’t looking good. He was on a life support machine and wasn’t expected to survive. The hospital gave him 0.1% chance of surviving. Luckily he proved them wrong. After turning off his machine he didn’t die, and the next day he was taken to Southampton Hospital where he had a procedure. He was in

hospital there for two weeks and then he was bought back to Poole for rehab. He was there for a while before being allowed home and was looked after by Headway, who are amazing. He has no lasting effects and we know how lucky he is to still be here. We celebrate on July 9th every year and call it his ‘Didn’t Die Day’. Allan proposed after being egged on by his children at his daughter’s wedding. He always said he would never marry again and so it was quite a shock and for a while I wasn’t sure he was serious. Planning the wedding was such fun. We decided to marry at the Guildhall in Poole after attending his daughter’s marriage there. It is such a beautiful building and the registrars are all so helpful. The wedding took place on 16th June 2012 at 3.30pm. The day was wonderful and all that we had hoped for. Allan’s son Tom was his best man and my daughter Kate and Allan’s granddaughter Gracie-Rose were

bridesmaids. My dad, who is now 86, walked me down the aisle. I was very emotional but managed to get through the service using only a few tissues! After we said our vows the registrar told Allan that I had something extra to say to him. He was very surprised and I would like to share it with you as it is so beautiful. You are my once in a lifetimeMy miracleMy feet dance because of youMy heart beats because of youAnd I shall love because of youWherever you go I shall goAnd I will spend all of my days at your sideMy once in a lifetime My miracle I had been learning it for months so that I knew it off by heart. I’d even written it out in letters two inches high (so that I could read it without my glasses on) and given it to the registrar in case I needed to refer to it, but luckily I remembered it.

Instead of wedding gifts we had donations from our guests for Headway, as they were such a help to Allan, or Macmillan Cancer Support, as our late brother-in-law Ian was being treated for cancer at the time. We went on honeymoon to the Lake District and stayed in a yurt. Unfortunately, it was the wettest June in living memory and after 4 days of continuous rain we booked into a B&B!

The brides took a while longer to get a party going. In the 1600s, it became practice for a bride to spend the evening before the wedding going through her dowry! A dowry is the gift, usually of money, bestowed upon the bride or the bride’s parents, from the groom’s parents in return for accepting his hand in marriage.

Across the centuries, dowries became less common and the modern day hen-do started emerging with formal dinners or luncheons. It was not until the sexual revolution and liberation of women in the 1960s, however, that today’s hen parties finally arrived.

No festival wedding is complete without pinwheels decorating the area! Resident DIY Goddess Sarah shows us how to create easy-to-make pinwheels. If you’re feeling extra crafty you could also make mini pinwheels with paper and split pins to attach to drinking straws or giant ones to really emphasise the theme. You can offer them to guests to take home at the end of the day as a memorable favour too.

1. Measure and cut your card or acetate into a square measuring 17cm x 17cm and carefully cut out.

2. Rule lines diagonally across the centre of the circle, this will help you to find the centre. Measure 7cm in on each corner, where the blue lines are marked in the picture, and cut slits.

3. Use a hole punch to carefully put a hole through every other point, so there is only one in each corner of the square. Use your punch if it reaches or scissors to cut a hole in the centre of the square.

4. Cut a length a wire and thread a bead into the centre of it. Make sure that beads are a little larger than the hole that is punched in your card. Twist the wire for 1.5cm and cut a piece of straw the same length.

5. Carefully thread the wire through the straw and then one at a time thread the straw and wire through each hole at the corner of your square. Once all 4 are threaded through, pass the wire and straw through the centre hole of the pinwheel. This is a bit fiddly but it is worth it.

6. Twist the wire at the back of the wheel tightly and attach to your dowling or cane. Make sure it is bound very tightly, you could use coloured electrical or washi tape over the top to secure the wire and to colour your stick.

7. To make sure the pinwheel will turn, space out the blades along the straw so that there is no resistance to it turning in the wind.

You will need: Coloured card or acetate . Dowling rods or garden canes . Beads that are larger than your hole punch hole . Drinking straws . Beading wire . Hole Punch . Wire Cutters . Ruler . Scissors . Pencil

So you’ve said yes!

After setting a date and a budget, it’s time to think about the search

for the dress many brides day-dream about for weeks, months or even years before their wedding!

Every bride deserves to look their best, but designer price-tags are sometimes not budget-friendly, so it is not surprising that the promise of cheap replica dresses available online is enticing for many brides-to-be.

But horror stories of sub-standard material and design, which don’t even resemble the advertised designer products, often turn a brides’ dream into a nightmare. Sarah Hall, proprietor of Butterfly Brides in Poundbury, Dorchester, tells us why:

“Some unauthorised online sellers are using inferior fabrics, not boning them properly, and not lining them properly, if at all. The product the girl tries on in my shop will be far and above the product they will receive,” she says.

The answer is closer than you think. Your perfect designer gown could be literally around the corner, lovingly stored and cared for, complete with the expert advice of a

three-dimensional sales assistant who will support you until your big day.

“A lot of girls have looked at pictures online and they think they know what they want and they try it on and don’t like it at all,” said Sarah.

“Very often the dress a girl buys is a dress she hasn’t even considered as an option. 70% of our sales are from me or my staff suggesting a dress for them to try on. It’s our job to know what styles and type of dress would suit a customer,” she added.

And, it doesn’t have to break the big-day budget. At local bridal shops like Prettymades in Wimborne, Girls of Elegance in Poole and Butterfly Brides, designer prices start from £200, and there‘s always a sale rail for a beautiful bargain.

So, rather than searching online, why not get a real feel for your dress at your local wedding dress retailer and see what you are getting for your money. After all, you only get one chance to get it right.
