    marketing possible. That means

    Avoid listing with an estate agen-

    ny sellers are frustrated that they

    Also evaluating vehicle ownership in as-

    pects including perceived resale values,

    buttons which customers consider during

    aru farewell good quality vehicles being the

    most important aspect as divulgedby custom-

    ers.

    Subaru was ranked third overall in the coun-

    The SAAutoBrand Survey 2012, the second

    annual automotive brand survey from Ram-

    sayMedia Research Solutions, received 6 486

    responses covering 19marques,making it the

    biggest and most comprehensive stand-alone

    survey of the SA motor vehicle market. The

    survey targeted readers of RamsayMedia ti-

    tles, which include CAR, LeisureWheels, Au-

    tomobil and Toyota Zone magazines, and the

    members of the Retail Motor Industry (RMI),

    measuring customers satisfaction as well

    their needs and perceptions in respect of all

    the automotive brands on the market.

    Fitting then, that during the month of

    love, Subaru has emerged as the most loved

    vehicle in South Africa.

    Subaru was ranked third overall in the country, sharing the podium with the likes of BMW and Audi, and out-ranking all other 17 brands.

    If youre a keen motorist and have been

    to Germany, you will have brought back

    a few automotive memories. Primarily,

    these will include stretches of unlimited

    Autobahn, bewildering road signs, pump-

    ing fuel yourself, steering wheels on the

    wrong side and a station wagon on every

    corner.

    The elongated estate versions of regular au-

    tomobiles enjoy a German popularity which

    canonlybe rivalled locally byanyandall iter-

    ations of the bakkie. Show me a family man

    or business fleet with Hiluxes and Ill point

    you towards a German village full of estate

    cars.

    A superb road network, very little off-road

    activity and half a year of icy weather means

    that the Fatherland has among the highest

    percentage of station wagons. Often they are

    grey, four-wheel-driveandmostof themcarve

    through the crisp winter air with four shiny

    rings on their nose.

    Thats right, theAudiAvant isking inDeut-

    schland. It has many worthy competitors but

    it prettymuchdominates themarket since its

    first generation popped up in 1996. And for

    every Audi estate sold overseas, someone in

    South Africa walks past a station wagon and

    buys a bakkie or SUV instead.

    Audi realized this long ago so they skipped

    quite a few estate versions and only brought

    in one Allroadmodel a few years back. The

    A6-based car had Quattro all-wheel-drive,

    raised ride height, extra cladding and semi-

    SUV trim but only achieved mixed success.

    With a recent face-lift to their popular

    fourth A4 series, Audi South Africa decided

    to scrap the regular Avant (station wagon)

    version and moved the product to a more

    niche, lifestyle market. The A4 Avant is only

    available as the new lemon-and-herbAllroad,

    the mild S4 or a peri-peri RS4.

    Audis S and RS ranges have the same deep

    roots in Avant shapes as their Allroad offer-

    ings and the A4 provides the perfect platform

    and pricing strategy for this new model.

    Available in either 2-litre turbo-diesel or tur-

    bo-petrol versions, the A4 Allroad fits neatly

    between Ingolstadts Q3 and Q5 SUVs.

    Like its forefathers, the Audi A4 Allroad is

    essentially an A4 Avant with raised ride

    height (180 mm), Quattro, ESP with off-road

    detection and torque vectoring, as well as ad-

    ditional styling bits. Plastic cladding protects

    paintworkwhiledifferentbumpers, grills, fog

    lights, sills and plates give the car some extra

    presence.

    The interior is identical to a regular A4 or

    Avant with exceptional cargo carrying abili-

    ties (490 to 1,430 l) and a reversible boot floor

    for those dirty loads.

    Bothmodelsareshippedwithaseven-speed

    automatic gearbox but the absence of low-

    range or locking differentials restrict these

    cars to mild off-road use.

    The 2-litre TFSi petrolmodel developsmax-

    imum outputs of 155 kW (211 hp) or 350 Nm

    while its turbo-Diesel counterpart offers

    130kW (177 hp) or 380 Nm.

    0-100 km/h takes 6.8 or 8.1 secondswhile top

    speedsare230or210 km/hrespectively.Aver-

    age CO emissions are just 170 g (petrol) or

    156 g (diesel) CO/km.

    A standard start/stop system helps to keep

    consumption downandAudi claims averages

    of 7,3 and 6 l/100 km. Standard equipment

    highlights include climate control, 17-inch

    wheels, colouron-boardcomputer,auto lights

    and wipers, headlight washers and auto-dim-

    ming rear-view mirror.

    The options list is rather lengthy and af-

    fords you the chance to properly customize

    your Allroad with goodies like MMI 3G navi-

    gation, B&O sound system, TV tuner, various

    parkingaids,biggerwheels,sportsseats,posh

    leather, electric tailgate, panoramic roof,

    adaptive headlights or dynamic steering.

    Audi South Africa hopes to capture sales

    from active lifestyle customers to boost its A4

    market share without denting any of their

    own Q-range numbers. The A4 Allroads only

    direct competitors on ourmarket are the Sub-

    aru Legacy Outback and Volvo XC70 Cross

    Country.

    We drove both models on a launch route

    which included plenty of high-speed gravel

    roads, the cars offering sure-footed and com-

    fortable travel at all times. All interiors sur-

    vived miles of bad roads without rattling and

    all drivers exited their dirty Allroads with

    confident smiles.

    Should you be interested in an Avant on

    steroids, the turbo-petrol costs R 433 000 and

    the turbo-diesel R 438 000. Both vehicles come

    with a five year/100 000 km Audi Freeway

    Plan.
