We are very excited this year to share our latest devel-opments with the Dye Solar Cell community. This new catalog features a load of innovative products in di!er-ent domains of our favorite photovoltaic technology.

How about solid-state? For our customers considering solid-state Dye Solar Cells, we are introducing a range of dedicated products. First, the organic dyes Sensi-dizer BA504 and Sensidizer BA741 (p. 27) with the ad-ditive Sodium Hydroxamate BA662 (p. 28). Second, the screen-printing titania paste Ti-Nanoxide BL/SP (p. 19) for the deposition of pinhole-free blocking lay-ers. These products will allow our clients to make e"-cient photo-anodes in solid-state DSCs.

Perhaps you are working on p-type DSCs? Discover Ni-Nanoxide N/SP (p. 22), a new screen-printing paste for the making of nanoporous nickel oxide layers in reverse DSCs. The resulting photo-cathodes may be combined with regular photo-anodes in order to obtain tandem cells with extra e"ciency!

That’s not all. We have completely revamped our solvent-free electrolyte o!er in favor of the new Mosa-lyte TDE (p. 32), which allowed us to reach unprece-dented stability and long lifetimes. A breakthrough now available to all our customers. Make sure to also try our new titania paste Ti-Nanoxide MC/SP (p. 19), which produces macro-channeled TiO2 electrodes for better electrolyte penetration and higher dye uptake thanks to its increased internal surface.

More than 3 years ago, we introduced our exclusive Elcocarb pastes for the preparation of carbon counter-electrodes in monolithic DSCs. We are now comple-menting these products with Zr-Nanoxide Z/SP (p. 22), a zirconia paste for the printing of insulating layers in monolithic electrode stacks.

The Ti-Nanoxide products are a family of formulations of anatase phase titanium dioxide particles. They can be used for the fabrication of photo-electrodes, and are perfectly suited for Dye Solar Cell applications. In-deed, in this new generation solar cell technology, the photo-anode consists of a nanoporous layer of tita-nium dioxide nanoparticles. The resulting layers can be stained with one of our premium sensitizing dyes to complete the photo-electrodes of Dye Solar Cells.

We provide a range of Ti-Nanoxide formulations dedi-cated to di!erent nanoporous layer deposition tech-niques. Thanks to various and well adapted viscosities, and Solaronix' composition expertise, Ti-Nanoxide tita-nium dioxide pastes can be used in all common print-ing and deposition methods:

· doctor-blading (slot coating), the laboratory friendly and easy-to-use technique with readily accessible tools

· screen printing (serigraphy), the ubiquitous deposi-tion technique available for both research and pro-duction scale

· spin coating, for thin film deposition and finely con-trolled layers

The formulations of our products has been developed over 15 years with close interaction with customers. This has led to the most comprehensive o!ering of titanium nanoparticles pastes available. We use in-house proven fabrication processes, that proudly con-tinue to serve research and industrial uses.

Solaronix' nanoparticle manufacturing allows us to precisely control crystal growth and anatase phase selectivity. We produce targeted particle sizes ranging from 8 to 20 nm, which enable us to tune the transpar-ency of the resulting titanium dioxide layers. This flexi-bility permits the fabrication of either highly transpar-ent, transparent, or di!using (opaque) electrode de-signs. Tunable appearance is a particularly interesting feature of Dye Solar Cells, and the Ti-Nanoxide prod-ucts aid in exploiting that feature.

We deliver tailored quantities for both research and industry. For the latter, Solaronix provides bulk supplies of screen-printing pastes to sustain the quickly grow-ing Dye Solar Cell industry.

As we also make advanced Dye Solar Cells and mod-ules, we know how to make titania particles and titania formulations just right. There must be aTi-Nanoxide product suited for your needs. Find out how in the following pages!

Zirconium Dioxide PasteZr-Nanoxide product, zirconium dioxide paste suited for preparing porous insulating layers in monolithic Dye Solar Cells.

Monolithic DSC assemblies are obtained by the stack-ing of titania (anode), zirconia (insulation) and con-ductive carbon (cathode) layers on a single substrate.

Our screen-printable products Ti-Nanoxide (p. 18), Zr-Nanoxide and Elcocarb (p. 40) respectively are a perfect combination for the preparation of advanced monolithic DSCs.

Zr-Nanoxide Z/SP (insulating) New

Screen-Printing Zirconium Dioxide Paste.

Zr-Nanoxide Z/SP is a screen-printable paste of zirco-nium dioxide particles. It is suitable for the deposition of an electrically insulating zirconia layer in monolithic DSC assemblies.

The resulting layer is opaque white after sintering and exhibits minimal dye uptake. Titania staining can be realized in the presence of the zirconia layer thanks to its porous structure which allows the dye solution to penetrate.

Printing with a 35-80 polyester mesh yields a ~4 mi-cron thick fired layer.

Nickel Oxide PasteNi-Nanoxide product, designed for preparing mesoporous nickel oxide photo-cathodes (p-type semiconductor).

Dye-sensitized photo-cathodes operate in a reverse mode compared with conventional DSCs. The electron cascade occurs from the excited dye to the oxidized species of the electrolyte, and from the p-type semi-conductor valence band to the ground level of the sensitizer.

Solaronix is introducing Ni-Nanoxide N/SP, the first commercially available nickel oxide paste to facilitate the development of highly efficient p-type DSCs.

Together with n-type semiconductor pastes like our Ti-Nanoxide products, it is possible to fabricate tan-dem p/n-type DSCs with efficiencies equal to or supe-rior to conventional n-type DSCs.

Ni-Nanoxide N/SP (p-type) New

Screen-Printing Nickel Oxide Paste.

Ni-Nanoxide N/SP is a NiO nanoparticle paste suited for the deposition of p-type semiconductor layers by screen-printing. After firing at 300°C, the paste forms a mesoporous layer of NiO having a semi-transparent grey appearance.

Getting the assembly of your cell right begins with the proper choice of substrate. Solaronix provides a variety of conductive substrates suited for Dye Solar Cells, as well as for other photoelectrochemical devices.

Our fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass en-sures optimal adhesion of the printed layers, a primary requirement for electrode fabrication. Thanks to their absolute chemical inertness, the coated glass surface can withstand acids and bases, making it very well adapted to a broad range of experiments.

Several sheet resistivities are available, among the most conductive found on the market today. Further-more, these glass substrates tolerate high tempera-ture treatments without loss of conductivity.

Our FTO coated glass comes in a variety of thicknesses and sizes to suit all of your needs. Standard sizes are available on stock. If you are not equipped to cut glass, we can even provide custom sizes at incremental cost.

Solaronix also provides flexible substrates coated with a conductive layer of indium-tin oxide (ITO). Our coated polymers present an excellent mechanical resistance against bending with no loss in conductivity. It makes them applicable in various photoelectrochemicals de-vices.

Our flexible substrates consist of PET foils, 175 #m thick, coated with an ITO layer. These substrates come with a protective layer on both sides for clean handling.

Education Cell KitEducation Dye Solar Cell Program.

Schematic representation of a 5 x 5 cmDye Solar Cell for education purpose.

A Great Asset for Education

Dye Solar Cell technology can be a fantastic topic for training courses. In that sense, the Education Dye Solar Cell program has been designed to allow professors and students to easily make their own operational solar cells.

This set consists of an a!ordable titania electrode that is ready to be stained with a natural dye such as those found in berries. This kind of preparation is very con-venient to do, and demonstrates the use of ingredients from nature to generate power from a renewable en-ergy source. The resulting solar cell is powerful enough to power a small electric load.

Easy, or Over EasyFor simplicity, the solar cell can be assembled by clip-ping the two electrodes against each other. For dura-bility, the electrodes may also be sealed with the help of the appropriate gasket. The kit is very versatile and can be adapted to your requirements.

Also For ResearchMore experienced users can build state-of-the-art Dye Solar Cells from this kit, using a synthetic ruthenium sensitizer, an advanced iodide electrolyte and plati-nized counter-electrode.

Demonstration Cell KitDemonstration Dye Solar Cell Program.

Schematic representation of a 10 x 10 cmDye Solar Cell for demonstration purpose.

A Proof of Principle

The Demonstration Cell kit is designed for people who would like to make bigger Dye Solar Cells. With an ac-tive area of 81 cm2, this type of solar cell can easily power a small electric load, and will run nicely in di!use light such as in o"ces.

Simple or Elaborate

The simplest way for making a demonstration cell con-sists of dying the titania anode with a natural dye. The cathode can be prepared from a conductive glass and a pencil (carbon source). These electrodes are then put together using binder clips, leading to an open-air cell. The Demonstration Cell Kit Basic includes these elec-trodes in one package.

Alternatively, the demonstration cell can be assembled in a sealed configuration for durability. Use the gasket to seal the electrodes together, while electrolyte is added through holes in the cathode. The Advanced variant of the Demonstration Kit includes all the re-quired parts.

In this configuration, we recommend using a ruthenium dye, such as Ruthenizer 535-bisTBA for the sensitiza-tion of the titania electrode, and a robust iodide elec-trolyte like Iodolyte Z-50.

Feeling ready to make your own Dye Solar Cells? Solaronix o!ers a free tutorial to help you get started:

Dye Solar Cells for RealThe Assembly Guide for Making Your Own Solar Cells

http://www.solaronix.com/technology/assembly/

This tutorial was inspired by requests from Dye Solar Cell enthusiasts looking for a place to start. Some of them were scientist starting to investigate the technology, while others were professors who wanted to teach the assembly in training courses. Should you be in such a situation or not, we hope you will find this tutorial to be useful, helping you to successfully make your own Dye Solar Cells!

There are many ways of making a Dye Solar Cell, with many combinations of materials and designs. For in-stance, some people may make cells open to the air, while others may choose to deposit the titania on their own. Some may prefer natural dyes instead of ruthe-nium dyes, and carbon cathodes instead of platinum cathodes, to make inexpensive solar cells for school activities.

This document attempts to cover all possible situa-tions. Therefore, several methods are described for obtaining the same part of a solar cell. The cathode, for example, can be made from platinum or carbon. In such a case only one method needs to be employed, depending on materials and equipment available. Readers are thus invited to pick and choose the sec-tions relevant to the type of assembly they desire.

This guide was compiled from comments and sugges-tions from our customers. Please feel free to send us your comments and suggestions, so that we can con-tinue to improve this tutorial.

The operation of a Dye Solar Cell is magical. Fortu-nately, making them requires no magic, just the right tools, materials, and techniques that we are happy to share with you here.

Good luck making your own Dye Solar Cells!

Solaronix proposes two product ranges featuring our original Lumixo light engine: The Sunirad light soakers, and the Solixon large area solar simulators. The two product lines benefit from the same exceptional char-acteristics of the Lumixo light engine.

The Solixon equipment from Solaronix generates a per-fectly true sun-like illumination, up to Class A rating over large areas. This unmatched behavior enables accurate solar simulation independent of the type of photovoltaic material. It is thus very well suited for the characterization of today's Solar Cells absorbing over of a broad range of wavelengths, such as tandem and multijunctions cells.

The Sunirad equipment features an emitter that is spectrally matched to the type of solar cells under test. The product range is comprised of Class A, Class B, and Class C machines. The spectral emission of the Class-C unit is especially suited for the light soaking of a-Si solar cells and Dye Solar Cells, which ensures minimal power consumption. The Class A and Class B units are suited for the light soaking of crystalline sili-con solar cells, and for the aging of compound semi-conductor based thin film solar cells.

Lumixo, the Heart of Our Solar Testing Equipment

The need for a reliable and accurate light source for solar simulation and solar cell testing emerged during the early days of Solaronix. At the time, available light sources appeared to be unstable over time and led to biased photovoltaic measurements. With the same credo of autonomy and technological leadership, Solaronix developed a specific type of light source to overcome such limitations, the Lumixo light engine.

This genuine light source perfectly mimics sunlight and presents an outstanding light stability over a long pe-riod of time. The unmatched features of the Lumixo light engine allow Solaronix to supply today's photovol-taic industry with accurate and dependable testing equipment.

In common discharge lamps, the light is emitted as an electrical arc between two electrodes. The extreme temperature of the discharge causes electrode break-down after a few hundred hours of operation.

Alternatively, plasma lamps belong to a class of electrode-less light sources energized by radio fre-quency power. In the Lumixo light engine, a magnetron generates the power necessary to excite a plasma in a

sealed electrode-less bulb. The bulb's lifetime itself is virtually infinite, allowing for the Lumixo's outstanding lifetime of 20 000 hours. The end-of-life time is actu-ally dictated by the rotating parts (fans, motors) and the magnetron, parts that can be easily replaced. Ex-isting Solaronix solar simulators have over 43 000 hours of operation!

Proper documentation and remote assistance is pro-vided to make trouble free Lumixo light engines service directly on-site by the customer's team.

Sunirad and Solixon Solar simulators

Solaronix o!ers solar testing equipment based on a reliable design with over 12 years of development. The Sunirad product line is intended for light-soaking, with thermal control of your sample at 50°C. The Solixon units benefit from the same steady-state reliability while o!ering room temperature testing (25°C) and high-end Class A spectrum for sample characteriza-tion. The two product lines benefit from the same ex-ceptional characteristics of the Lumixo light engine described in the previous pages.

Solixon, exclusive continuous solar simulators

The Solixon equipment from Solaronix generates a per-fectly true sun-like illumination, up to Class A rating over large areas. This unmatched behavior enables accurate solar simulation independent of the type of photovoltaic material. It is thus very well suited for the characterization of today's Solar Cells absorbing over of a broad range of wavelengths, such as tandem and multi-junctions cells.

The unique features of the Lumixo light engine a!ord:

· High fidelity Class A spectrum

· Power adjustable to simulate partial sun illumina-tions from 30% to 110% sun

· Possibility to combine light soaking and solar simula-tion functionalities with the same equipment

Sunirad, our light soakers product line

The Sunirad equipment features Lumixo light engines with an emitter that is spectrally matched to the type of solar cells under test.

The spectral emission of the Class-C unit is especially suited for the light soaking of a-Si solar cells and Dye Solar Cells, while o!ering minimal power con-sumption. The Class A and Class B units are suited for light-soaking of crystalline silicon solar cells, and for the aging of compound semiconductor based thin film solar cells.

The light soaking machines are built to be running con-tinuously, allowing for long term tests lasting several months.

· Active thermal sample management for temperature accuracy

· Optimized power consumption and low residual heat

Sunirad C-65 (for a-Si)

Sunirad C-65 is the low-cost equipment dedicated to the light soaking of amorphous silicon (a-Si) solar cells, or other solar cells having a similar spectral re-sponse. This machine features a yellow shifted Class C spectrum, specifically optimized for a-Si testing, using one Lumixo light engine and additional halogen bulbs.

Thanks to an excellent overlap of the Lumixo light emitter and the a-Si spectral response, an irradiance of 800 W/m2 is enough to obtain nominal short-circuit current on a-Si cells.

The additional halogen bulbs don't contribute signifi-cantly to the current generation of the a-Si cells, and are simply needed to be compliant with IEC 60904-9 Class C spectrum.

Custom Units

Many of our realizations are built upon customers' re-quirements. The mechanical design of our systems allows us to build systems of any size with no develop-ment costs, could they be custom Sunirad light soak-ers, or Solixon solar simulators.

Our Large Area Sunirad and Solixon equipments consist of arrays of Lumixo light engines. The complete ma-chine is then built for the targeted illuminated area specified by the customer.

Thanks to our Lumixo light engines, the illuminated areas of these machines benefit from a continuous and stable irradiation. Sunirad and Solixon equipment can be ordered with a light spectrum of either Class A, Class B, or Class C to fit every need and budget.

Our classic systems typically meet the Class BBB re-quired for most testing standards, while our high end systems meet Class AAA specifications.

All our machines are constructed to give easy access to the illuminating chamber. Furthermore, they come with a network interface to allow remote control of the in-stallation.

Thermal Control

Continuous solar simulation implies that a consider-able amount of energy is fed to the sample under test. Solaronix' range of simulators benefit from extensive engineering work for further thermal control of your samples at 25°C or 50°C.

Our sample holder can be fitted with thin-tube heat exchanger which circulates fresh air on the back side of the samples.

Sunirad units

The Sunirad units are designed for light-soaking and feature a sample holder thermostated at 50°C to meet standard light soaking conditions.

Solixon units

The Solixon units are designed for solar simulation. They rely on thorough thermal engineering to maintain 25°C on the sample holder, required to meet the Stan-dard Testing Conditions (STC), as per IEC 60904-9.
