This lesson would be part of a Solar System Unit in the Science class.

Discover scientific information by correctly communicating their findings to others.
Describe other bodies in the solar system
Describe the moon’s phases
What’s the cause of day and night
Describe why there are seasons

Overview of lesson and Process
We have been learning about the solar system in science for the past few weeks! Who can tell me one thing that we have learned so far about science?
Today we are going to continue our unit on the solar system. There are three activities set up around the room.
You will choose one and we will begin working on it today. If you don’t finish we will continue to work on it tomorrow in science.
Poster of Different Bodies in The Solar System
Using the explanations that have been provided to you, create a story about the Solar system
Make sure you include the different bodies in the Solar System in your story (gas planets, terrestrial planets, dwarf planets, etc)
Use the materials (markers, construction paper, glue, etc) on the table to complete your story
Once you have finished turn in your story to the designated area
Moon Brochure Using your knowledge of the moon
phases, create a travel brochure on visiting the moon
Make sure you include creative details so you can persuade a traveler to visit the moon.
In your brochure, include not only the different moon phases, but also what causes eclipses
Use the information we have discussed in class as well as books on the table to complete your brochure.
Be creative and use the materials on the tables to create your brochure.
Once you have finished, turn in your brochure to the designated areas.
What Causes Seasons and Day and Night
Make a model or a poster, whichever you prefer that shows why seasons exist.
Use the information we have discussed throughout this unit to complete the model or poster.
Be sure to also include the causes of day and night in your model or poster.
Be creative and use the materials that are on the tables.
Once you have finished, turn in your model or poster to the designated area.
AssessmentThis lesson will be extended into a unit with the
other activities we do along with it.
After each lesson, you will turn in your assignment to the designated area.
Once the unit is finished, you will create a portfolio and put each of your assignments into your portfolio.
You will then turn in your final portfolio to me.

Checklist for Moon Brochure
I will use persuasive elements when I create my brochure
I will have included all of the moon phases
I will be sure to include what causes eclipses in their brochure
I a variety of materials to add detail to their brochure

Night
I show why season exist
I will include all of the seasons labeled
My Brochure will include what causes day and night
I will use creativity and detail
using the materials provided
Universal DesignThis lesson promotes Universal Design because there
is an activity for every student in the class to do, no matter what learning level they are at.
This lesson is differentiated in which, the poster on the different bodies in the Solar System is for the struggling learners, the moon brochure is for the average learners, and the model or poster on the different seasons and what causes day and night is for the advanced learners.
Each activity is challenging for the students, however they meet the different needs of those in the classroom.
