L E T T E R F R O M T H E S T A F F

If you’re one of the 98% of Americans who say this is their year to get on track, to make healthier life choices and start treating their bodies right, well then this issue is for you! We’ve packed an entire issue full of health and fitness tips, tricks, recipes and so much more. Knock out two goals of spending more time with friends and eating healthy with our guide on how to pick healthier options from menus around town. We found some of our favorite clean-eating dishes from local restaurants and they are nothing short of delicious, healthy and all!

If you keep up with So6ix, you know we’re all about anything and everything local. We found a few wonderful local growers and producers, and we hope you’ll find your way to a local farmers market to support them.

I hope this year is filled with new adventures, wonderful memories and good health for you. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for me personally and for So6ix. I’m ready to take on what the universe throws at me. I have a great feeling it will be a wonderful year. Here’s to another 12 issues of So6ix!

Wishing you the best,

Happy New Year!I always get a little bit of a bittersweet feeling at the turn of a new year. The festive holidays that run from October to December’s end are over, which is a little sad, but the start of a new year is always so exciting! How lucky are we to have a new year to start fresh? Sure, we don’t have to wait for the excuse of a new year to do better, to eat healthier, to work out more, to reach out to old friends and make new ones, to tackle all of those things we really wanted to do the prior year, but sometimes it helps seeing a new year on the calendar to put a little pep in your step. Have you set new goals for 2016? I plan on continuing my clean eating throughout the year (but I promise you, pizza won’t get neglected), to read as many books as possible, to travel, to let situations be what they are instead of what I think they should be, to step out of my comfort zone and say yes to more things and plans I would normally say no to, to make new art, to meet new people, to have deep conversations both with strangers and those close to me, try new recipes, to watch more sunrises and sunsets, and to spend as much time with my family as possible. Sounds like I have a busy year ahead, huh? Don’t feel bad if you’re not one of those who set new goals or resolutions each new year, because sometimes just waking up and putting two feet on the ground and pushing forward is enough, and I am proud of you!

• 1⁄2-2⁄3 cup almond milk (vanilla is OK)

• 1⁄2 tbsp chia seeds

• 1 tsp honey or agave

ALMOND BUTTER TOAST WITH BANANA

Spread fresh almond butter on a piece of whole-wheat or Ezekiel toast. You can opt to top with banana, toasted pumpkin seeds, slivered almonds, or chia seeds.

PRE-WORKOUT MEALFood is fuel. It’s recommended you eat a nutritionally balanced meal 1-2 hours before you train.

• Keep fiber consumption to a minimum before a workout. Too much can lead to belly bloating and cause muscle cramping.

• It’s not recommended to eat right before a workout. Try to give yourself at least 30 minutes for settling and digestion.

• Good carbs are GREAT! Don’t eat bad sources of carbohydrates

that will energize you quickly, but will also make you crash quickly.TipsPRE-WORKOUT SNACK

If you don’t have time or aren’t up for a full pre-workout meal, opt for a quick but effective snack 60 minutes before training. You want it to be a combination of lean protein and slow-acting carbs.

3. In a smaller mixing bowl or in a small food processor, combine all the ingredients for the sauce and mix until well incorporated.

4. Pour the sauce over the reserved vegetables and mix until well combined. Transfer the veggies to the prepared baking dish and bake in the oven for about 40-45 minutes, stirring once or twice.

5. When the veggies are cooked to your liking, set the oven to broil and cook for 2-3 minutes, just to slightly brown and crisp the top a little.

6. Serve immediately as a main dish or pair with grilled or baked chicken breast.

POST-WORKOUT SNACKPut down the weights, pick these up. If you aren’t ready for a full meal after a workout, try to eat a snack immediately following a workout.

CHOCOLATE MILK

1-2 cups of low-fat chocolate milk seals the deal with extra carbs and protein. In addition, it’s full of vitamins and

minerals, like calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B, vitamin A, potassium, sodium and electrolytes.

CHOCOLATE CHIA RECOVERY DRINK

Credit: minimalistbaker.com Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients:

• 14 oz chocolate coconut water beverage*

• 1⁄2 tbsp banana, sliced or frozen

• 1⁄4 cup ice

• 2 tbsp salted peanut or almond butter

• 1 tbsp hemp seeds

• 1⁄2 tbsp flaxseed meal

*If you can’t find chocolate coconut water, sub

coconut water + 2 tbsp cocoa powder.

Instructions:

1. Add chocolate coconut water and chia seeds to a blender and let rest for 10-15 minutes, so the chia seeds can swell and activate.

2. Add remaining ingredients and blend. For a thicker shake, add more ice and/or frozen banana.

3. Divide between two glasses and serve immediately.

TUNA STUFFED AVOCADO

Credit: thestayathomechef.comYield: 2-4 servings

Ingredients:

• 4 avocados, halved and pitted

• 2 4.5-oz cans tuna, drained

• 1 red bell pepper, diced

• 1 jalapeño, minced

• 1 cup cilantro leaves, roughly chopped

• 1 lime, juiced

• Salt & pepper

Instructions:

1. Scoop out some of the avocado from the pitted area to widen the “bowl” area. Place the scooped avocado into a mixing bowl and mash with a fork.

2. Add the tuna, bell pepper, jalapeño and cilantro to the mixing bowl. Pour the lime juice over everything. Stir it all together until everything is well mixed.

3. Scoop the tuna mixture into the avocado shells. Season with a dash of salt and pepper.

• You can’t outwork a bad diet. Don’t reward yourself with foods high in cal-ories and saturated fats after a hard workout.

• Not all of these meals and snacks have to be made fresh. Spend some time in advance meal-prepping and placing into ready-to-go containers, for convenience and a major time-saver!

• Don’t skip a post-workout meal even if you’re not hungry. It’s vital for max-imum results and muscle building or rebuilding. Tip

PUPPY OF THE MONTH

This little ball of fluff is almost too cute to handle. The

Alaskan Malamute, covered in a thick woolly coat,

can handle the coldest of climates. According to the

American Kennel Club, it’s the 53rd most popular

breed, and it’s a perfectly affectionate, loyal and playful

pup. If you’re not okay with shedding, the Alaskan

Malamute might not be for you – they shed their thick

coats heavily twice a year. Give this guy somewhere

to run and play and he’ll be set. Often mistaken for a

Husky, this sister breed is every bit as lovable.

We are constantly bombarded with new aesthetic technology to combat the signs of aging. Some devices, such as Fraxel Dual, perform as promised. Many, however, do not. I am pleased to introduce a new and effective non-surgical device to Oklahoma: PROFOUND. Developed by Syneron-Candela, a global leader in the aesthetic marketplace, Profound is the first device to create all three skin fundamentals: elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid. These major skin building blocks work to create dermal volume – often depleted with aging.

PROFOUNDLY IMPRESSIVE: Single Treatment Radiofrequency Microneedling

By Tim R. Love, M.D.

BEFORE 3 MONTHS POST 1 TREATMENT

VOTED BIGGESTBREAKTHROUGH IN 2015

HOW IT WORKSProfound boasts temperature-controlled radiofrequency (RF), which is clinically and scientifically proven to deliver energy directly to the deep dermis to stimulate neo-elastogenesis, neocollageneses and hyaluronic acid deposition. Profound is unique in its ability to generate new dermal volume. This is the result of the natural healing process following carefully con-trolled thermal impact in the dermis. This solution is great for patients who prefer a natural approach, as Profound creates dermal volume and elasticity by fostering the body’s own heal-ing process, without fillers or toxins.Profound takes us to the next level. We can deliver the RF

energy directly to the reticular dermis, which is the target.

WHERE IT WORKSProfound provides patients with a 100% response rate for wrin-kles and 95% rate for skin laxity – all from a single treatment in the office. Areas treated include nasolabial folds, cheeks, mar-ionette lines, jawline, neck and décolletage. Additionally, pa-tients see an overall improvement in skin quality and elasticity.

One treatment creates younger skin –

Profoundly.

Eleven years ago, the famed Chef Bruce Rinehart brought his love for East Coast-style food to the corner of 28th and Penn, where he founded a restaurant

and named it Rococo. Fast forward six years: his success has resulted in a second location on the northwest side of the city, in Northpark Mall. This is a spot that

boasts comfort, camaraderie and delicious food. One of the many things we love about Rococo is that almost everything on the menu is house-made, from the

coleslaw to the ketchup. What isn’t house-made is shipped overnight directly from the East Coast, so you know you’re getting the freshest seafood available.

But the menu isn’t restricted to East Coast fare: it wouldn’t be Rococo if it didn’t have a little bit of flair, like the Rococo Cookies or the beloved Hawaiian Poke.

You won’t find a better Hawaiian Poke in Oklahoma, and that’s a fact. (Okay, it’s really our opinion, but it’s THAT good.) Each dish has been carefully created

to be packed full of flavor and to truly represent its East Coast inspiration. For all you brunchians (our word for avid brunch-ers), Rococo is serving up some of

the best darn brunch around (their tagline, not ours). Seriously though, trust us and try it. Another plus: they take food allergies very seriously. They offer many

gluten-free options, and several of their dishes can be modified to fit your dietary needs. A dietician teaches the chefs and wait staff about food allergies and

how to properly cook and serve food, which is a wonderful thing! Rococo is a local favorite that you just can’t pass up. From the homemade EVERYTHING,

to the wonderful ownership, chefs, and staff, to the cozy atmosphere shared with friends and family, it’s a memorable spot that will keep us coming back.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop is a phenomenon that’s quickly taking over

stomachs and states (11 states, to be exact). Fuzzy’s lives up

to their tagline of “Fresh, Fast and Fun.” You’ll find our Fuzzy’s

locations in our greatest entertainment spots: Campus Corner

and Bricktown. Do yourself a favorite and drink (oops, we mean

eat) the queso! It’s that good. Fuzzy’s is very family friendly, but

you can also have a margarita if you want, which makes it our

kind of place! There are all kinds of Mexican dinner options:

Baja tacos (so tasty), jumbo burritos, nacho platters and even

Mexican sandwiches. Fuzzy’s is the perfect spot to stop in before

a Thunder game and fill your belly, or sit on the patio overlooking

the canal during a warm summer evening. We love Fuzzy’s!

SLAUGHTER’S HALLNorth Central Avenue,

OKC, OK 73104405.606.6063 • slaughtershall.com

Slaughter’s Hall: a building with a lot of history, and now a

restaurant with a lot of flair. This building was founded in 1920

and was noted as the hub of the political, social and music

scenes in the Deep Deuce district. Playing on that fact, the

owner has opened a restaurant that harkens back to those

great times. This eatery and beer hall is the perfect spot for

after-work get-togethers or a Saturday afternoon sandwich

stop before shopping. Chefs make everything they can

in-house and source local ingredients wherever possible.

The goal of Slaughter’s Hall is to provide an exemplary,

comfortable, lively atmosphere and a progressive beer menu.

You’ll find 30 rotating beers on draft as well as over 60 bottled

selections. Their sandwiches are oh-so-delicious, and you

can’t overlook the mac and cheese – it’s heavenly.

A good old-fashioned diner-style dive that’s making all of your

favorites from scratch. Sure, we’re into the trendy eateries, but

sometimes you just need some down home-style cooking.

Rocky Mountain Grill is a spot you can enjoy on Saturday

mornings with the family or during your lunch break. For

breakfast, you’ll find favorites like an all-American breakfast

of eggs, hash browns, toast and choice of meat, or their M&M

special: a giant Mickey Mouse pancake with egg and bacon for

only $4! For lunch we recommend the Brian’s special burger:

a cheeseburger with bacon and a fried egg, or their infamous

Rocky Mountain burrito, topped with house-made green chili

sauce. It’s true comfort food with a kick! P.S.: Don’t forget to try

their daily specials, which have customers coming back weekly

INSPIRATIONS EATERY & EVENTS2118 W. Edmond Rd. #300,

Edmond, OK 73003 405.715.2525 • inspirationstearoom.com

This quaint coffee house and tea room is a longtime favorite of

Edmond locals and OKC dwellers alike. You won’t find a dinner

menu here, and we’re perfectly OK with that, as it’s a breakfast

and lunch spot Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Made for get-togethers, Inspirations is the perfect spot for

family and friends to savor delicious creations while enjoying

each other’s company. Wanting to have a more “true” tea

experience? You can choose to dine in the fine-dining tearoom,

where you’ll have the ultimate experience with tea trays and

service. We recommend any version of their homemade

Belgian waffles for breakfast. Also, don’t skip out on their

deliciously blended and crafted teas: everything from Lemon

Soufflé to Rum Butter Irish Breakfast. They’re out of this world.
