When first biting into the Garlic Chicken and Basil Pizza from Café  7, you are hit with the wonderful mix of fresh and delicious ingredients. Café 7 is known for many things, one of which is their outstanding menu, especially the pizza that I was lucky enough to enjoy today!

Best word to describe this pizza…FRESH! Every time you step into Café 7 you are faced with attributes that stand out from all the others. Friendly service, a great atmosphere, perfect location and spectacular food make this place extremely popular. The ingredients are fresh and delicious, the presentation is perfect and the taste is absolutely mouth watering. Hand tossed dough, light sauce, with oven roast-

ed chicken, basil, garlic, olive oil, fresh mozzarella and fontina cheeses, smoked bacon, lightly seasoned tomato cuts, red onions and oregano, served on a thin crust, make this tasty dish one that should be tried by everyone in town.

If you are not familiar with Café 7, I highly recommend that you drop in for lunch or dinner very soon. This is a place that you will want to add to your “to try” list for the summer. Café 7 is con-veniently located in west Edmond at 14101 N. May Ave, just north of Memo-rial Rd. (405) 748-DELI.www.cafe7okc.com

Iron Man 2I’ll be completely honest, I want to be

Tony Stark! There is a lot of cool visual effects in this movie as the plot takes place here in the US, most of which the government is trying to force Stark to give his Iron Man technology up for de-velopment. Also starring is the incompa-rable Mickey Rourke as “Whiplash.” He plays a Russian scientist who is the son of the man who helped design the Arc Reactor, who knows the Iron Man secret. Very well played I might add. I love all the cool tech/computer stuff that really doesn’t exist, but just watching makes you wish it did. The story line is a little thin at times, never really making a point, but all in all, a lot of fun to watch.  It’s what you’d expect from the Iron Man sequel, but no more. Let’s just hope this leads into an Avengers movie soon!

Robin Hood I have to admit, there’s probably no one

that can play the medieval hero better than Russell Crowe. I could watch Gladi-ator a million times.... It just never gets old.  So I went into Robin Hood with su-per high expectations to say the least.  As the plot begins to develop, Crowe plays a typical medieval archer named Robin Longstride. Upon meeting Maid Miriam (played by Cate Blanchett) he takes on the role of her dead husband so the govern-ment doesn’t seize her property. Even at this early point in the film I found my-self very confused with the story line. The movie continues to really drag on without any kind of war conflict, i.e. Crowe chop-ping people’s arms off with his sword. I thought the premise was “rob from the rich, give to the poor.” There are points in the movie that I enjoyed myself, but not many. I never thought I’d say this.... but at 2hrs 11minutes long this movie just was not worth it to me. It’s also PG-13 so say goodbye to the bone crunching power moves on the battlefield too. Save your nine dollars and go rent Kingdom of Heaven. Now that’s a good Movie. They should re-name this one “Robin Should.”

Move aside Thunder, Red Hawks, and Yard Dawgz and prepare to share the love. There’s a new sports team in town. On May 19, Prodigal Hockey announced that OKC’s newest professional hockey team would be named the “Barons” and unveiled the logo and jerseys. The AHL franchise, and Edmonton Oilers affiliate, will begin its first season in OKC, in Oc-tober of this year.

The naming process was a long one, in which Prodigal Hockey received over 20,000 name submissions from fans. Over 3,000 individual team names were submitted, but Barons was the most popular identity for Oklahoma’s newest sports team.

“Barons isn’t just about oil and en-ergy,” Prodigal LLC owner Bob Funk Jr. said at the press conference. “It could be a lot of different things. Whether it’s a land baron or something of that nature. It’s about the entrepreneurial spirit, the work hard ethic of Oklahoma City and what that means to all of us here. So we felt like Barons was a perfect match for us. It gave us the perfect identity for the hockey team itself.”

The logo consists of the word “Barons” stretched across a representation of an oil tower standing on a golden field. The logo was created with design assistance from the Barons’ parent NHL club; the Edmon-ton Oilers. Their team colors will consist of a rich navy blue and copper. The colors are related to those of the Oilers.

Funk thanked the city and Edmonton as well for their support and help in get-ting the team off the ground. The owner of Prodigal states that his goal in the logo search was to find something that

relates to and represents Oklahoma City on not just one, but multiple levels as well as pay tribute to Edmonton. He be-lieves that they accomplished that with the Barons.

The announcement of the team name drew immediate applause from the crowd in attendance at the press conference held at the Cox Convention Center in downtown OKC. The jersey unveiling however, received an even bet-ter response. Drawing some, “wow” and “those are really nice” comments from the crowd, as well as applause, the solid white and dark navy blue with copper trim home and away jerseys made a good first impression.

Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Jari Askins stepped up to the podium as well. Askins seemed excited about the new team, and happy with where everything is headed. Not just for hockey, but for Oklahoma on a bigger stage. Askins also supplied this about the name:

“The name Oklahoma City Barons to me,” said Askins, “just means success. Whether it’s oil barons, land barons, cat-tle barons, it means success. And I think the opportunity to label the next hockey team here in Oklahoma City as the Bar-ons also means that it’s going to mean success for them as well.”

So with that, the OKC Blazers era has officially come to a close for good, and a new era of hockey in Oklahoma can be-gin. The Barons now look to a hopefully long, successful stay in Oklahoma City as hockey fans across the state prepare themselves for the ride.

A shiny, new professional team is headed to Oklahoma City. The Oklaho-ma City Blazers, of the Central Hockey League, have been disbanded, and an American Hockey League team is head-ed for the Cox Convention Center in Bricktown.

In the Blazers’ long, storied history in OKC, many players of note have passed through the locker rooms. Now that the franchise ceases to exist, it is only natu-ral to wonder where some of those play-ers are today.

Marco Cefalo, for example. Cefalo was one of the most electrifying, crowd pleasing players on the ice in his time with the Blazers. Cefalo played with the team from 1999-2003. One of the best enforcers of his time in OKC, Cefalo was known for making opponents pay when the gloves came off.

He played in 163 regular season games as a Blazer, scoring 25 goals with 28 as-sists. In 17 playoff games, Cefalo scored 2 goals and had 2 assists. He totaled 603 career penalty minutes in OKC.

The Winnipeg, Canada native decided that once his playing career was over, staying in Oklahoma was the right thing to do.

“Oklahoma City is just a great place,” said Cefalo. “The people are very friendly and out-going and kind of up front and honest. I married an Oklahoman Native Emily (Perry) and we have a little boy Jaxon who is now 7 years old. Oklahoma is a good place to raise a family.”

In his time since leaving the Blazers, Cefalo has made a new living running his own business. The former hockey player owns Arctic Air Technologies, a local heating and air company.

“Right now, we are doing a lot of green, high efficiency, geo-thermal homes.”

“We’re looking to create low energy bills, and we specialize in high-efficiency systems.”

Cefalo says that his greatest moment with the Blazers was winning the Cham-

pionship during the 2000-2001 season. His most memorable fight came against John Hewitt from the Wichita Thunder. Hewitt, a friend of Cefalo’s brother’s ex-girlfriend, had been smack talking Ce-falo leading up to their matchup.

“He came to Oklahoma City, and he left the ice with, I think he took about seven (stitches) over each eye and about three or four on his nose. They had to clean the ice up for about 30 minutes.”

Cefalo thinks the family-like atmo-sphere and electric fan base here in Oklahoma City could pave the way for a successful AHL franchise. Cefalo also believes that there is a growing market for hockey in Oklahoma following the Winter Olympics, and that one day, the city could support a National Hockey League team.

“I think definitely there’s a market for hockey in Oklahoma.”

As for Cefalo, he still straps up the skates and hits the ice now and then. The former Blazer spends his Wednes-day nights and Sundays playing Men’s league hockey in Oklahoma City.

InfInItI G37 (Price: $37,225)The new G Sedan comes with luxuri-

ous amenities on the interior, making for a comfortable ride on top of a refined power-train, smooth curve handling, and a sharp acceleration. Twisty roads are inviting to a G37, and with its sleek de-sign this car has just about everything I would want in a vehicle aside from very little trunk space.

fORd SVt RAPtOR (Price: $40,000)The 2010 model seemed to be the

truck that Ford fans had waited for. It outsold demand expectations this year. But if you’ve thought about getting one, you might wait until next year if you want a little more power under the hood as Ford is upgrading from the 5.4L V8 to a 6.2 in 2011. Based on a few conversa-tions with a few people that own a Rap-tor, it seems that Ford has outdone the competition with this truck.

MAzdA 3 (Price: $15,235)This year’s Mazda 3 is another alter-

native to the Honda Civic. In my opinion, if you frequent the highway as much as city driving, the Mazda 3 is smart option.

Not only is it sportier than most cars in its class, it gets a nice amount of horse-power with the 2.5L option and 6-Speed manual transmission. I have driven quite a few of these, and as affordable as it is it felt like a quality vehicle from the inside and out.

CAdILLAC CtS (Price: $35,165)Every time I have been in a CTS, I

have envied the owner. The Cadillac CTS seems to be in a class of its own because of the unique body-design, powerful V6, and beautifully crafted interior layout. Best of all, the CTS shines in its turning abilities with a tight chassis and sport-tuned suspension. A Cadillac CTS is the way to go in the Upscale Midsize class.

AudI Q5 (Price: $37,350)While the European model will get

several powertrain options (including a diesel), the U.S. version of the Q5 comes with only one - a 3.2-liter V6 rated at 270 horsepower and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. While review-ers find the V6 powerful enough, prac-tically all of them long for a diesel or hybrid model, which is expected in 2011. For those needing a comfortable ride to soccer practice, the Q5 is a good decision.

LAnd ROVER LR2 (Price: $35,500)The LR2 handles adequately on paved

roads; however, off-road surfaces are

still the Land Rover specialty. This model comes with a 3.2L V6 with 320 horse-power. The main drawback in this model is that it lacks the off-the-line towing capabilities that other off-road vehicles have shown this year. A nice feature on the LR2 is its Traction Control System. Controlled by a dial, the system recon-figures the engine, transmission, and traction control settings for a variety of conditions: on-road, grass, gravel, snow, mud, ruts and sand.

LExuS 450H (Price: $42,685)The 2010 Lexus RX Hybrid is powered

by a 3.5-liter V6 engine as well as two electric-drive motors. Altogether, the powertrain makes 295 horsepower. The RX is classified as a full hybrid because the 450h has the ability to drive exclu-sively with either its gasoline engine or its electric motors. Test drivers say power is adequate, though sometimes it can be lacking. A big plus is that the 2010 model has a much smoother, more unobtrusive transition from gas to electric power.

HyundAI GEnESIS (Price: $22,000)

Year after year we see Hyundai im-proving on their entire fleet’s overall quality, performance and style, making it a brand that is worthy to compete with most other vehicles across the board. The base Genesis Coupe 2.0T features a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that produces 210 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and 223 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. However, the more powerful Gen-esis Coupe 3.8 comes equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine that generates 306 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 266 pound-feet of torque at 4,700 rpm. While test drivers report that both engines make for quick acceleration, neither is power-ful enough to compete with rivals like the Ford Mustang GT or Nissan 370Z.

BMW 6-SERIES (Price: $78,450)I got into one of these the other day

and melted into the seat. It felt great wrapped around me, but unfortunately I had to let it return to its real owner. The 6-Series comes with a nice sound-ing, powerful 4.8-liter V8 engine. It pro-duces 360-horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 360 pound-feet of torque at 3,400 rpm. Though a six-speed manual transmis-sion with Dynamic Driving Control is standard, a sport automatic transmis-sion with shift paddles is available at no additional cost.

2011 CAdILLAC CtSEditor’s Note: In doing research, we came across this concept art for the 2011 model.

You hear the term, “green cars” a lot these days. The whole idea is part of a movement to make vehicles safer for the environment and it’s catching on. Ford Motor Company announced last month that it will invest $135 million to design, engineer and build green vehicle parts for the next generation of hybrid vehicles.

Green cars emit less pollution and in turn help prevent a global climate change. It is the main reason why green cars have gained popularity. There are several benefits to “going green” when it comes to buying a new vehicle.

Gasoline, internal combustion engines release hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Carbon monoxide is poisonous to humans, while hydro-carbons and nitrogen oxide make smog. Green cars cut back on these harmful emissions.

Better fuel economy is also a benefit of green cars. A vehicle that produces less carbon dioxide will cost less to fill up. While it is hard to see the cost savings in the short term, using less gas can help

you save money in the long run. How-ever, you must do your research because some models have better fuel efficiency than others, and some models may give you no better fuel efficiency than stan-dard vehicles. Some hybrids though, can get up to 50 or 60 miles per gallon.

Another benefit is the Alternative Mo-tor Vehicle Tax Credit. Individuals and businesses buying a brand new hybrid car or truck can take advantage of the credit. It is only available for a limited time to the original owner of the vehicle, but can be quite helpful financially. For example, a 2011 BMW Active Hybrid 750i has an available credit amount of $900. The available credit can be considerably higher. On a 2010 Escape Hybrid 4X2 pur-chased prior to April 1, 2009, the avail-able tax credit amount totaled $3,000.

There are several benefits to “going green” when it comes to buying a new vehicle. While the total savings a green car owner can accumulate is up for de-bate and calculation, in the long term hybrid vehicles could save you money at the pump, on taxes and really help the environment.

When buying a new vehicle, the first question we often ask ourselves is whether we should buy it new or used. Each has its own positives and negatives attached. However, now may be the best time to go pre-owned.

A new car will depreciate quickly, and depreciation begins as soon as you drive it off the lot. In fact, as soon as you leave the dealership, your new car could es-sentially be worth over $1,000 less than your purchase price. After three years, a car that you bought new could have hy-pothetically lost up to 30% of its value through depreciation.

“Basically, with a used car market you have a resale market that’s already taken its depreciation value,” said a lo-cal used-dealership general manager. “The vehicle is not going to depreciate any more than what it will on an annual basis. The difference is, a new car pur-chased, say for $20,000, can be bought for $10,000 or $11,000.”

The main reason people like to buy new is obvious: various warranties man-ufacturers and dealers offer. There is also a reduced amount of maintenance involved. Barring manufacturing defects that are often solved early by recalls, a new car won’t need major maintenance for the first several thousand miles. Oil changes and tune-ups are still required with new cars, but some warranties and dealers will cover the cost of those.

The looks of a new car are also a ma-jor selling point. The fact that you can select the color and features of your new car can be very appealing.

However, when push comes to shove,

buying used can be more affordable and reasonable to most. Those same warran-ties that are available for brand new cars can be available on some used as well. You can find ‘07, ‘08, ‘09 vehicles on used lots that still carry factory warranties.

There are also more options available with used cars. In the current state of the market, you see more cars on used lots. Some have been marked even fur-ther down. Quality varies by make, mod-el, year, and even by car lot.

Some used car dealerships make it a point to recondition vehicles. Various used dealerships go through 120-point inspections, thorough vehicle check-ups, and also provide the customer with a run down.

In the end, it’s the competition be-tween used car dealers that makes buy-ing used easier. There are a lot more lo-cations to buy used cars, from small lots to big-time dealers; the more competi-tion, the better the pickings.

A local used car dealership general manager says the best thing a potential buyer can do is their research.

“The best way to go about shopping is to do all your research up front. When you’re looking for a vehicle, you’re going to determine your wants and your needs based on your personal circumstances.”

When looking for your new auto-mobile, be sure to research online re-views and view consumer reports. Shop around at a number of lots, and bring your research with you. There are plenty of options available, and buying used just may be what’s best for you.

State of the Market: foreign vs. domestic CarsBy: Chris Wescott

So6ixJune2010

The U.S. car market is saturated with both domestic and imported vehicles, giv-ing the customer the greatest amount of options. However, foreign cars have been taking the lead, and U.S. manufacturers like Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors have been forced to give up more and more of their market share. Whether you are a supporter of American-made au-tos or a sucker for an import, there are plenty of options. Despite a recession and numerous government bailouts, the car market is slowly turning around.

In a research survey done in the fall of 2009 by Auto Pacific, 23% of survey par-ticipants claimed they were most likely to acquire a new vehicle within twenty-four months. Something must be clicking; however, the market is still on thin ice.

The same study, done in March of this year, saw that only 20% of participants in-dicate that they would likely purchase a new car in the near future.

The market’s decline is well-document-ed. In 2006, over 11.2 million cars were produced in the United States. In 2007, that number dropped to just over 10.7

million. In 2008, the number of American produced vehicles dropped to just under 8.7 million. Production in the U.S. dropped 19.4% from 2007-2008.

In comparison, Japanese automobile production dropped just .2% in the same time frame, and production in China grew by 4.7%.

So, is the foreign market more stable than the American market at this mo-ment?

As of May 1st, 1.8 million cars were sold in the U.S in 2010. Just under 580,000 were labeled domestic, and over 1.2 million were imports. Domestics, however, have seen a 22.9% increase in sales from 2009, while imports have gained just 16.4%.

As far as trucks are concerned, 1.7 mil-lion were sold as of May 1, 2010. Over 999,000 were domestic, and just over 710,000 were imports.

Both the foreign and domestic auto-motive markets have seen increases this year. You be the judge.

With today’s economy and the job market such as it is buying a new car may seem to be a bit difficult to fathom. Nevertheless, with all the new technol-ogy, warranties and financing that is available, it’s worth it.

Just shop wisely and do your home-work before you go to the dealership.

APR rates in Oklahoma range from 3.65% - 7.5%. Do your homework and check your credit report.  Sometimes the bank where you keep your nest egg may give you a bet-ter loan than the dealership and its finan-cial lenders. Before you sit down with the finance department at a dealership check your credit with your bank.

When you purchase a new car and drive it off the lot, you will have the sat-isfaction of knowing that the car has a factory warranty. These warranties are usually three-years and 30,000-mile warranties. If something major breaks down like the transmission or power train, you are covered.

Buying an extended warranty past the factory warranty is a smart option. Just make sure the warranty covers the critical elements of the car and the war-ranty does not kick in until the factory

warranty expires. Warranties vary along with the deductibles that coincide with them, so choose wisely.

New cars are coming out with tech-nology that makes life so much simpler. GPS guidance systems that come stan-dard with today’s new cars means that you no longer have to stop and ask for directions to find a store or highway exit because you are lost.

The OnStar system that now comes standard in most new GM models gives the driver peace of mind when they or a loved one is behind the wheel. The OnStar system has services for crash response, emergency services, stolen vehicle assistance, remote door unlock, vehicle diagnostics to tell you what is wrong with the car and Turn-by-Turn Navigation.

The parking assist program that comes with some of the new Lexus mod-els takes the pain out of parallel parking. Ford has come up with its own version called “active park assist.”

There is nothing like the smell of a new car, especially one that has all the options you want. Have fun, shop wisely and find a cool new ride for the summer….

For several years, Oklahomans have been categorized as some of the un-healthiest folks in America. We ranked 49th out of the 50 states. Not only is this a terrible statistic, it’s embarrassing for our state.

Encouraged by Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and a visit from First Lady Michelle Obama, the OKC Health and Wellness Group has made a pledge to of-fer a fun, interactive way to reach Okla-homans and help educate our communi-ty about various health issues, while still focusing on prevention strategies.

The OKC Health and Wellness Group, Ltd. is a non-profit organization, recently founded by Angela Collymore-Slovak, PhD. Angela is an adjunct professor and small business owner. She and her fam-

ily, which includes her two children, take pride in living active lifestyles. Dr. Colly-more-Slovak felt the need to reach out to her community and promote education on wellness issues, incorporating her fa-vorite subject: science. She approached leaders in the Oklahoma City wellness community and asked them to join her cause.

Every member of the group is dedicat-ed to educating Oklahomans on issues such as pain management alternatives, healthy lifestyle choices, benefits of mas-sage therapy, hair loss prevention, and the importance of hormone balancing in both men and women. The techniques, as well as any featured products, are consid-ered natural, and chemical-free. In many cases, these methods are certified vegan. They also offer anti-aging strategies for both men and women through the use of powerful plant-based antioxidants and advanced moisturizing systems. The group presents findings in research in a fun and easy-to-understand manner. It is important to the Health and Wellness Group that guests go home with the most up-to-date tips, making them healthier, happier, and more confident.

The OKC Health and Wellness Group is currently organizing a free Family Health and Sports Expo at the Biltmore Hotel in Oklahoma City on June 12th starting at 10:00 a.m. Families are invited at no cost, will receive free health screenings, gather cutting edge information from the ex-perts on a wide variety of health issues, and will leave with cool, free stuff. Medi-cal experts will be on hand to answer questions, make appointments, and give suggestions that may help people gain a better understanding of their lives.

Expo details can be found atwww.okchealthfair.com.

Zerona is a new, non-invasive body-sculpting laser designed to instantly remove fat, to reduce inches, and con-tour the body without invasive surgery. It is the first laser of its kind. It can be conceptualized as liposuction without surgery, or laser liposuction without in-cisions. It is completely painless. It does not involve bleeding, or downtime. There is no requirement for the use of external garments, as is common in liposuction surgery to control bleeding. Further-more, there is also no recovery period. With Zerona, you can resume your nor-mal activities immediately, as soon as the treatment session has concluded.

The Zerona laser is classified as a ‘low-level’ laser which operates at a wave-length of 635nm. At this wavelength, it can be used to safely emulsify adipose (fat) tissue by causing pores to form in the fat cell (adipocyte) through which the contained fat droplet can be expelled into tissue space. This is analogous to the heating effect of food in a microwave. Once there, the fat droplet is reabsorbed into the lymphatic system and can be eliminated and excreted from the body.

Double-blind Clinical studies have proven its effectiveness in emulsifying fat in fat cell layers. Studies of Zerona’s effectiveness when applied to the ab-domen, waist, hip, buttocks, and thighs

indicate an inch loss of around 4 inches to 9 inches in 2 weeks. The Zerona treat-ments are approximately 40 minutes in duration. If sufficient inch and fat loss are not seen after the 6 treatment ses-sion, additional sessions may be done to eliminate more fat.

At this time thousands of people in the US have undergone Zerona treat-ments. So far, there seems to be no risks or complications associated with this treatment. In addition to being safe, the satisfaction rates for treatment are high. The fat loss can be maintained if the ap-propriate lifestyle changes are made.

Zerona is not cheap, but is surprisingly cheaper than liposuction. There are only 3 Zerona lasers in the Oklahoma City area, and less than 20 in the state. The cost is variable, but locally and nation-wide ranges from about $2,700 to $3500 for 6 treatment sessions.

Finally, we have what appears to be a very simple and safe option for reducing body fat rapidly.

Did you know that food labels can of-ten be up to 300% wrong? Excess is all around us, and it’s time to get pro-active about our health. With all the challenges we face in dieting and living a healthy lifestyle, we are going to have to start studying our food. It’s important to edu-cate yourself when it comes to food and calorie intake. I have made myself an expert when it comes to calorie infor-mation. I have educated myself on the things I regularly eat and also on my occasional cheats. Did you know that a plate of cheese fries at Outback has 182 grams of fat? I do!

The most important impact that tracking your food will have is that it will show you your trends in eating. If you eat well for three days and bad for four, your chances of losing weight are slim. You may realize that you eat out for lunch four times a week and each meal may consist of up to 1500 calories. You may think you are only taking in 2,000 calories a day, but in actuality, you are really eating 3,500 calories. It’s a stagger-ing thought. We have to be prepared and plan for success, and there is plenty of information available to help you do just that.

First, write down your food intake for a week. You have to take a hard look at where you are with your calories, and fig-ure out where you can be better. Look at the trends of the week. Did you see any patterns you were not aware of? Do you go workout and then head straight to a Mexican restaurant for dinner? Knowl-edge is power, and you must know where to begin. If you can’t find the calorie in-formation you are looking for, try using one of my favorite tools, Calorieking.com. It offers free calorie information based on portions and specific brands.

Second, start educating yourself on the foods that you enjoy that will help your progress. Don’t look at this as what you can’t eat. Instead, focus on the new, exciting foods that can help you

reach your goals. There are hundreds of healthy options out there, and it’s up to you to make the effort. Try different reci-pes for healthy alternatives.

Last, but not least, start preparing your meals in advance and taking them with you to work or when you’re on the go. If you already know what you will be eat-ing, and you know that it is within your calorie range, you have no excuse but to see success. It will be trial and error at first, but you will find the foods you enjoy and the portions that will satisfy you. This can be a major turning point in your fitness lifestyle. Take the first step to joining us in becoming fit.

...Record Keeping, and Real Results.

There are many pieces of advice I can give about how you can maximize you full potential. One being that you should utilize what you have. Remember your skills and natural talents. If a tool you need does not exist, find a way to create it or help others become part of something great. When you realize your true poten-tial and acknowledge all of your acquired skills and abilities, you can do more than you may have ever previously thought possible.

So many people hinder themselves (and unknowingly, others) with negative thought and constant discouragement. Try to find ways to encourage yourself and everyone around you every moment you can. When you develop an attitude of gratitude, energy itself can bring a light and positivity to others that can make a bad day a good one. Sometimes the right word or thought can change the very out-look that you or another person have, and may help to build a momentum for help-ing people or accomplishing things that are truly great. That said, if you focus on the negative, the very opposite can hap-pen. Start today and choose to live life to the fullest.

We live in a time where more things are possible and creativity is everywhere. Now is the perfect time to be creative and inspire others. Do not let the little things defeat you. Remember, you are responsi-ble for how you think about things. Some-times you cannot control what happens to you, but you can control how you deal with it. You can’t change the past, and your future is in your hands, so let today be the day you choose to accept personal responsibility and work to correct the flaws that hold you back and hurt others. Become a springboard of inspiration and hope with kind words and actions.

What are your goals and dreams? What have you accomplished, and what can you accomplish? You know this an-swer better than anyone else. Maybe it is time you ask yourself the proper ques-tions to get your life on the track of per-fect momentum. Once you do, boredom and depression will start to leave you be-hind. You will have better friendships and relationships, and you will have a light in your life that warms others and gives you more energy than before.

Positive thoughts to you, and may your life lead to health, wealth, and happiness.

So6ixSoRelationships

In a very popular verse in the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 says, “Love is pa-tient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered.” Whether you are religious or not, this passage speaks truth, especially when it comes to con-flict resolution in relationships.

When your significant other does something to make you angry, whether intentional or not, the initial response is to get revenge or let them know how they wronged you. This attempt to fix problems, or to fix the other person, usu-ally stems from anger. You tend to point out everything they did wrong right away, and may proceed to treat them like they are undeserving of your love and kind-ness. Most of us know that this only starts a blame game, and self-defense walls immediately come up. The result is nothing gets settled, relationships can suffer a bitter end, and couples storing away built-up anger, ready to be released in the next fight. So how can conflicts get settled in a way that is effective and ben-eficial to the relationship? The answer is simple but not easy. In fact, it might be

the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do. The answer is love.

When you are wronged by your partner, instead of attacking them out of anger, be patient and treat them with kindness. This will be more effective than any negative retaliation you could think of. Love and kindness will heap burning coals on their heads. Once they realize that even though they wronged you, you still treated them with love. They will feel low for the way they treated you. Most likely, they will do anything they can to get back in your favor. When this oc-curs, you should then explain to them, in a gentle way, what they did to hurt you (even though they probably already know). By doing this, you are allowing them to recognize that you are aware that they mistreated you, yet you still de-cided to love them anyway. Your partner will be humbled and more willing to lis-ten to your critiques at this point.

Love is the key to resolving conflict. The passage quoted earlier describes the kind of love we need to be displaying in our relationships.  It requires us to set aside our pride and begin to truly love, instead of retaliate. True love isn’t easy, but it is worth the sacrifice.

Think back to the last time you had a date night, or even a night out with the girls: do you remember what accessories you wore to accent your outfit? What about your last pool party? Did you just wear your suit and sunglasses? This summer, let your style shine by creating looks with different accessories. Wear the same dress you wore on a date night to an afternoon movie with a friend, but add different accessories to create a to-tally different style.

This summer, we are seeing three main guidelines with accessories: big, bright, and bold. This season is charac-terized by a plethora of large necklaces, cocktail rings, embellished cuff brace-lets, and hoop earrings. As hoop earrings make a comeback in 2010, they are be-ing seen bigger and more embellished than ever. If you prefer an earring other than the hoop, chandeliers are another option. Gems, stones, and crystals are seen on earrings to help them make a louder statement. This trend of gems and stones will be seen on cocktail rings, statement necklaces, and bangles.

Besides jewelry being glammed out, another popular trend is natural prod-ucts with floral designs or leaf imprints. Organics are making their way onto jew-elry by either 100% natural or being “up-cycled” from other products.

Bangles are always an accessory that is in season, and this summer we see all types of bangles in all sizes. Bangles and cuff bracelets can have beads, gems, or hardware to create a more glam look. You can find them in wood and natural products for a more casual look. With this, wrap bracelets are a huge trend for summer this year. In all colors imagin-able, wrap bracelets can be seen with small beads, stones, glass beads, leather, or woven. Remember, when choosing wrap bracelets make sure they are cho-sen wisely in colors that complement each other. Make sure you keep it to a minimum! No need to have bracelets

up to you elbows. Smaller trends we are seeing in the summer of 2010 are charms and jewelry making a statement by being considered “out of the box.”

Remember, when choosing accesso-ries for your outfit this season, do not overload on large and gaudy jewelry. Make a statement, but keep it simple.

So6ixSoPolitical

so6IX MaGaZIne • www.so6IX.coM 51

The other day I had a conversation with a friend of mine. We were talking politics as usual, and I said something along the lines of, “I think we are in a lot of trouble. People feel that something is wrong, but they can’t quite put their finger on it.”  I went on to say that the reason people can’t put their finger on the big problems we face is because so many haven’t been taught the things they need to know in order to ask the right questions. I blame government-run education for the prob-lem at hand.

At first, my friend didn’t agree with me. He diagnosed me with bias and a small case of tunnel vision. So we performed a little experiment to prove my point. I had him select a handful of his employees, and I asked them the following questions:1. Who was in the Revolutionary War?2. Why was the Revolutionary War fought?3. Who won the Revolutionary War?4. What was the result of the Revolu-tionary War?

The sad result was that not a single one of his employees could answer these sim-ple, basic, and fundamental questions.

Now, to those of us who are politically involved, for those who love their coun-try, and for those who seek to save it, we recognize the significance of the preced-ing. It is, after all, the entire reason we are even here today.

Let’s face it, without a strong foun-dation; you can never keep a structure sound. So with that in mind, if Americans

do not know about the foundation, how can the structure of our way of life remain solid? The answer: It can’t! As the founda-tion crumbles, so does the structure.

Does this worry you? Perhaps you can conduct your own experiment on your friends and family. As a matter of fact, ask your elders these same questions, then ask a high school student. You may find that your elders will more than likely ace the test while the high school students fail.

People can’t put their finger on the problems because they don’t know the foundation. The truth is that if more Americans knew about the foundation, they would be able to ask the right ques-tions, and in the end, get the desired an-swers and results. They would oppose the years of infringements on their un-alienable rights, and they would see the truth on how we should progress.

The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum will celebrate the 37th anniversary of The Prix de West Invita-tional Art Exhibition and Sale June 11-13. The Prix de West is one of the premier Western art shows in the country and the museum’s biggest fundraising event of the year. Patrons of the event spare no expense at the black-tie event to have an opportunity to bid on some of the finest Western art from around the country. The Prix de West is the event artists work diligently toward gaining an invitation. This event is the artist’s opportunity to gain recognition on a national level and have their work seen in galleries through-out the country.

Artists from around the country sub-mitted their work to the Prix de West screening committee between January and April of last year. The artists received notification in late June that they were accepted. The committee has chosen the best works for this year’s event. Several artists familiar to the Prix de West will be returning this year along with eight new artists in the show this year.

“All the major collectors and all of the major galleries will be in attendance on Prix de West weekend, Chuck Schroeder,

Museum President said.“They know they are going to see top

quality Western art and some of the new artists emerging in the art world.”

One hundred and ten artists have con-tributed more than 300 pieces of art for the event. Each artist is vying for the cov-eted Prix de West Purchase Award.

The Purchase Award is chosen by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and purchased for the muse-um’s Permanent Art Collection. The artist receives the purchase price, a $5,000 cash award and the Prix de West medallion.Other awards include:

The Nona Jean Hulsey Rumsey Buy-ers’ Choice Award is a $3,000 cash award that goes to the most popular work of art as chosen by the Prix De West patrons.

The Frederic Remington Painting Award is a cash award of $3,000 for ex-ceptional artistic merit for a painting.

The Major General and Mrs. Don D. Pittman Wildlife Award is a cash award of $3,000 for exceptional artistic merit for a wildlife painting or sculpture.

The James Earle Fraser Sculpture Award is a $3,000 cash award for excep-tional artistic merit for a sculpture.

The Robert Lougheed Memorial Award is a cash award of $3,000 for the best dis-play of three or more works.

The Express Ranches Great American Cowboy Award is a cash award of $3,000 for the best cowboy subject matter.

One of the many things that makes the Prix de West show unique is the concept of the sale. Patrons purchase the art and wait until the end of the show before they can take it home. The piece will remain in the museum for ninety days and then it goes to its new owner. This gives the pub-lic the opportunity to view the paintings before they slip into someone’s private collection.

There are two different sales during the Prix de West event. There is the fixed price sale where there is a set price for each painting and a minimum bid sale. During the minimum bid sale, patrons must meet the minimum bid price and

beat the competitors’ bid on the piece. Pieces not sold during the opening week-end events will still be available for pur-chase at the museum.

The event is open to the public, but prepaid reservations are necessary. Pa-trons can buy different ticket packages to attend specific events or a premium ticket package to cover the whole week-end of events.

During the opening weekend of events, patrons will enjoy a continental break-fast, see artist demonstrations and attend seminars by guest artists and speakers.

One of the invited speakers to the event is Ron McCoy, Professor of History at Oklahoma State University. He will be speaking Friday afternoon at 1:50. His lecture is titled: “Last Stand: Enduring Theme in Western Art.”

“The last stand theme is seen in paint-ings like the “Battle of Little Bighorn” in 1876 or paintings by Remington or Rus-sell, McCoy said.

“It could be the killing of a grizzly bear, it’s the grizzly bear that is isolated and sur-rounded, the end is fairly obvious, but it is going to go down with courage and style.

“You see that a lot in Western art, for example the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., what is important about it is, you get this tremendous stand against the Persians and they know they are go-ing to get wiped out.

“You see it in Western art I think, be-cause the West is where a young coun-try basically created a mythology and I mean a mythology in a positive sense. These are the stories that provide the glue that holds our culture together. The

West is the place where people went to remake themselves, to change their identities, become something different, and realize their potential. It is where you have a lot of different peoples, ideas, and ways of life playing out.

“Some were doomed almost as soon as they started, but the idea was, that they were commitment to moving on and as they disappeared, it was with a sense of dignity and a sense of purpose and that is what is recognized.

“So essentially, the painter lets you in and you are watching a moment that may almost be literary in the sense that it symbolizes an ending,” McCoy said.

Several other guest speakers from area museums and galleries have been invited to share their wealth of knowledge in the Western art world with the public.

To make reservations for the Prix de West event, see the schedule of events and list of seminars, you can visit the museums Web site at www.nationalcow-boymuseum.org. The deadline for regis-

tering is June 4. You may preview the Prix de West Catalog online at www. national-cowboymuseum.org/events/pdw/onlin-ecatalog/.

The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 6 and the public is welcome to come and experience the beauty of the Prix de West as well as many other art collec-tions at the National Cowboy and West-ern Heritage Museum.

There will also be a workshop June 14-17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Animal Painting and Sculpture” National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Prix de West artist Randal M. Dutra will instruct an intensive workshop that places paint-ers and sculptors side-by-side with a common focus on animal subjects. Skill level requirement is intermediate to ad-vanced. There is a limited enrollment and advanced reservations are required. Tuition is $350. If you are interested call (405) 478-2250, Extention 219 and  make a reservation.

Can you find 1,234 words that began with “S”?

So6ixJune2010

A little history...Mike Wilks - Artist

This is the majority of the letter S, the most complicated image from Mike Wilks’ 1986 book The Ultimate Alphabet. In the 30 × 40” acrylic painting Wilks included 1,234 words that began with S. The original edition of the book includ-ed a contest to see who could correctly identify all 7777 of the words throughout his abecderium.

Original printings included the Ultimate Alphabet Workbook, a 12,000-word checklist to fill out for the contest. The contest, which closed April 1st 1988, was scored as right minus wrong. Not surprisingly, the winner was the one with the fewest wrong answers.
