and get involved for both your’s and other’s future enjoyment. It is a great way of meeting

Monthly Computer Tips – January 2014 Tablet (iPad) Notes: Own an iPad 2? Or maybe even a first generation iPad? Your device is barely 3-4 years old and yet at times it feels like complete junk. This is not an accident. The companies who make these devices want them to be short lived. What better way to make money than force us to buy a new iPad every year or two? But unless your iPad is really broken or totally shot, you don’t have to get a new one. If you feel that your iPad is not what it used to be, a few simple actions may restore some of its original zest. The tips below are not a guarantee. They will not turn your old iPad into a new device. For some iPads, they may not have any effect at all, but if you manage to breathe some life into your trusty old iPad and carry on for a while longer, you’ve not only saved some money, you’ve kept yourself out of the endless consumer loop for just a bit longer. Do I upgrade? There are many opinions on this matter. Some say you should keep to the latest version of iOS at all times, others say you should not upgrade old devices. No answer is right all of the time — there are too many variables to take into account and each iPad is different. While new versions of iOS add polish and useful features, they’re not really meant for old devices. The first iPad can’t go beyond iOS 5, and was better off with iOS 4. The iPad 2 just might be better off with iOS 5, or if you’ve already upgraded, with iOS 6. Yes, you’ll have to give up some nice new features, but it’s worth it to keep your iPad in a better working condition. Apple’s official line is that you should always update, and this is much of the time down to software. Developers will always write with the latest version of iOS in mind, and while many retain backwards compatibility with iOS 5 and 6, priority is given to newer revisions. Improve your iPad by Spring-cleaning If your iPad is full to the brim with apps and photos, or even if you just have a bunch of apps you never use; it may be time for some spring cleaning. While an extra app or two is not going to make much of a difference, many of us have loads of apps lying around which we just never use. A good way to start is by going to Settings > General > Usage, and checking how much free space you have on your iPad. Here you can also see which apps take up the most amount of space on your iPad — these may be ones you don’t actually use. You can delete large apps from this screen by tapping the app, or if you want to delete other apps, just uninstall them the good old way by tapping the icon and when it “wobbles” touch the X. If your device is really full, getting rid of a boatload of photos may help too. If you keep those on your device, you should have them backed up elsewhere anyway. If you don’t, transfer your photos to your PC or Mac via iCloud or using the Dropbox app, and delete them from your device. If you get rid of many apps this way, there should be a noticeable difference in your iPad’s perform-ance. Disable Spotlight Search. How many times a day do you use Spotlight Search? How many times have you used Spotlight Search since you’ve owned your iPad? Probably you can count the number on two hands or less. Spotlight Search is a great feature, but most of the time, it just isn’t necessary. If you keep your apps in relatively good order, and don’t have hundreds of them, there’s a good chance you rarely use Spotlight Search. So now what? In order for Spotlight Search to work, it has to keep indexing all the content on your device. This in-cludes your apps, emails, notes, music, messages, reminders, and pretty much everything else. If you rarely use the feature anyway, why not save some resources and stop this indexing? To do this, go to Settings > General > Spotlight Search, and uncheck all the items on the list. If you actually use Spotlight Search for certain things, such as finding buried apps, you can leave the indexing on just for those items, and uncheck all the rest. This will still save some resources, and could benefit your iPad.

NO NOVICES COMPUTER MEETING JANUARY

COMPUTER GROUP MEETING FRIDAY 17th JANUARY: IPAD WITH DEBRA

Google Now App for Smartphones (Speaking to Google!) The app generally works on Android 4.0+ (but there may be some exceptions), and is also available for iOS devices running iOS 6 and higher. If you’re on Android 4.0-4.3, or on iOS, you’ll need to launch Google Now and say “OK Google” or tap the microphone button to get it to listen to you. If, however, you’re already using Android 4.4, you can simply say “OK Google” when on your homepage to get Google Now to listen. This is an easy one, so if you’re not using it yet, you may want to start. Google can call anyone on your contact list or businesses around you. Tell it to “call contact” or “call business” to initiate a call. If the name appears once in your contact list, the app will simply initiate the call. If that person or has more than one number, or if there are several businesses that answer to the same name, you’ll be prompted to choose the one you want to call. The only real downside with both these features is that Google doesn’t do a very good job understand-ing names if they’re not regular English names. You probably already know you can ask Google for directions to anywhere. After all, Google Maps is the navigation method of choice for many users, even if they’re not on Android. But did you know you can ask for more than mere directions? To start, you can use the commands “directions to“, “navigate to“, and even “how to get to“. Then either say an exact address or a landmark name, and most chances Google will recognize it. If there are sev-eral place with a similar name, it will let you choose between them before it switches over to Google Maps for the actual directions. Want to walk somewhere? Bike somewhere? Use public transport? No problem. A simple command like “walking directions to” or “transit directions to” will get you on the right track. As a bonus, you can also use the command “map of” with an address, a name, a city, etc., to open Google Maps on that spot, or as a bonus, you can also use the command “map of” with an address, a name, a city, etc., to open Google Maps on that spot, or ask Google “where am I” to get a map of your current location. How lazy can we get in the future? The answer is “very”. Use Google to open Web pages you want to browse and even to open apps on your phone. Is it easier then tapping an app icon? Maybe, maybe not. But one thing’s for sure: it’s more fun. To open an app, simple say “open” and the name of the app you want to launch. To go to a Web page, say “go to” and give Google the URL. For example, if you say “go to siberme.com”, your browser will open on the ICE Club website! You can even tell it to “show me pictures of cute cats” or “show me England cricket score” and it will gladly do so. In short, try anything. Chances are, Google will surprise you.

Windows Tip of the Month Ctrl Key + V Pastes Clipboard text onto screen

Scam of the Month – January 2014 - THE HALIFAX SCAM: An email is received purportedly from Halifax. It says it had detected irregular activity in the Halifax online banking login. One is asked to verify the account as a hold has been placed on the debit card and cash could not be accessed. The email includes an instruction to download an attachment to verify the account. This should set alarm bells ringing and so instead check the online banking in a new window and there will probably be no problems.

WARNING - CRYPTOLOCKER RANSOMWARE PUTS MILLIONS AT RISK Cryptolocker in More Detail: We briefly warned about the Cryptolocker Virus in the December

Magazine. Many members have become more aware of it from the press and TV and therefore we offer further information and methods of avoiding it

How the threat gets in: There seem to be two main infection vectors: via email attachments and via botnets. Email attacks are fairly easy to avoid: take care with attachments you weren't expecting or from people you don't know well. Infection via a botnet is a little different, since the crooks are using the fact that you are already infected with malware as a way to infect you with yet more malware. That's because most bots, or zombies, once active on your computer, include a general purpose "upgrade" command that allows the crooks to update, replace, or add to the malware already on your PC. So take our advice: make it your task today to search out and destroy any malware already on your computer. Run a scan with your anti-virus software or download the free Malwareabytes from www.filehippo.com. This will remove any malware currently on your computer but if it finds the Cryptolocker Virus it will probably be too late because your files will have been encrypted. What you can do: Take this story as a warning, and don't forget that there are many other ways you could lose your files forever. For example, you could drop your laptop in the harbour (it happens!); a thief could run off with your computer (it happens!); or you could entrust your files to a cloud service that suddenly shuts down (it hap-pens!). The endgame is the same in all cases: if you have a reliable and recent backup, you'll have a good chance of recovering without too much trouble. Don't forget services that automatically synchronise your data changes with other servers, for example in the cloud, don't count as backup. (They may be extremely useful, but they tend to propagate errors rather than defend against them.) To the synchroniser, a document on your local drive that has just been scrambled by CryptoLocker is the most recent version, and that's that. Your synchronised cloud storage will simply upload the latest (encrypted) ver-sion. Examples of synchronised cloud storage systems are Dropbox, Microsoft Skydrive and Google Drive. Follow the backup advice we gave in the October Magazine but keep your backup drive disconnected except when you are actually backing up. Only then will your backup be safe. If your backup drive is connected to your computer, the files on there may also be encrypted. Prevention, in this case, is significantly better than cure: Keep regular backups of your important files. If you can, store your backups offline, for example on a USB drive or other external hard drive, where they can't be affected in the event of an attack on your active files. Your backups will be rendered useless if they are scrambled by CryptoLocker along with the primary copies of the files. Use an anti-virus, and keep it up to date. If you don’t run a scan on a regular basis, start to do so. As far as we can see, many of the current victims of CryptoLocker were already infected with malware that they could have removed some time ago, thus preventing not only the CryptoLocker attack, but also any of the damage done by that earlier malware. Keep your operating system and software up to date with patches. This lessens the chance of malware sneaking onto your computer unnoticed through security holes. The CryptoLocker authors didn't need to use fancy intrusion techniques in their malware because they used other malware that had already broken in, to open the door for them. Don’t open email attachments which you weren’t expecting or from unknown sources. What Else Can I Do? We can’t be sure that your Anti-Virus will detect the Cryptolocker virus. If your anti-virus is running in real-time it should stop any attack. However be aware that free versions of some anti-virus/anti-malware (e.g. Malwareabytes) do not offer real-time protection. To the best of our knowledge AVG Free anti-virus should protect you from attacks by the CrytpoLocker virus. However a special CryptoPrevent program has been released at www.foolishIT.com which purports to offer real-time protection. You may wish to download this as an additional safeguard.

Please remember a serious instruction issued at the Computer Group ‘Do not open

emails or attachments if you are unsure of the source.’

Thursday 23rd November - ‘Allo Allo’ Themed Dinner

What can we say other than once again a great night at the club, one of the best without a doubt. Members dressed up, (one dressed down!!!!!!!!) in various examples of the TV series ‘Allo Allo’. We were greeted with music from the period, and tables nicely dressed. Once drinks were obtained we all sat down to a very tasty and delightful 4 course meal served by waiters ‘wunderbare’ Richard (fresh from the Russian Front) and ‘merveilleuse’ Robert (of the French Resis-tance). Starter was a tasty potato and leek soup, followed by a main course of roasted leg of duck in orange sauce (surprisingly good portion) dau-phinoise potatoes, carrots, peas and beans. In true French tradition this was followed by a great selection of cheese and followed by profiteroles with chocolate sauce. Winner of the best dressed ‘allo allo’ character Richard Wood. Winners of ‘allo allo’ knowledge test, the Hackett/Monahan/Smith table (must be a sad lot). We were then entertained with songs of the period performed by Lin Sowden and her backing group of volunteers, together with all joining in. A hilarious night, thanks go to Brenda, Julie and kitchen helpers. Not forget-ting Doug, Ted and Richard who manned the bar.

Thursday 21st November - Presentation by Helicopters Sanitarios

Thanks go to Pian Whyatt for the presentation and information of the services available to both members and non-members of Helicopteros Sanitarios. Some information we were aware of and some we were not. Many questions

were raised by club members at the meeting, and thanks to Pian for remaining later at the club to an-swer many personal questions one to one.

Wednesday 27th November - Trip to Rute It was an early start to the day when we boarded the bus at our separate pick up points and as most of us probably had only time for a cup of our favourite hot drink, the first coffee stop was very welcome. I was fortunate to be sitting at the front of the bus behind the driver so my view of the countryside was very good and I must also say that the bus was very comfortable. We were lucky to have a lovely sunny day if a bit chilly when we arrived in Rute at the chocolate fac-tory. It seemed to be very busy with other Spanish bus and school trips. The chocolate factory was a little disappointing as I expected to see chocolates being made. The factory appeared to be making other Christmas confectionery. We then made our way down to the museum to view the latest displays which were all made from chocolate of course and included life-size statues of the Spanish Royal Family, a typical Spanish vil-lage and other displays all of which were very interesting. Not sure if Jo-Anna did find the gentlemen sitting on the toilet which was supposed to be annually hid-ing somewhere in the Belen village display, an outstanding display again made with chocolate. Afterwards we went on to Rute village to look, taste and buy lots of chocolates, turron, jamon, sausage and have a little tipple of Anis. On return to the bus a few of us felt that after all that tasting, lunch might not be needed. Onwards to visit the sugar museum which had more large displays all made this time from sugar. Best part of the day for me, when we came to Lake Iznajar and Jo-Anna said we were having lunch at the Hotel looking down on the lake. It was a lovely situation, very impressive. Well done Jo-Anna. I am sure another visit to Lake Iznajar is on the cards for me next year. Submitted by Marie Macdonald. >>13

<<12 Chocolate Belen in Rute A Belen or Nativity scene is common throughout Spain; many private homes have a tiny scene to a whole room laid out. Many people spend hours or even days on their Christmas Belen, but what about chocolate Belen which takes four months to create. That's as long as it's taken the team in Rute to create the 52 metres square Belen that contains 1400 grams of white and dark chocolate. Quite a feat, but not an edible treat.

MUSIC NIGHT - Friday 29th November - Bernie Burns - Great American Songbook 2 I make no apologies for using superlatives in this piece summarising Bernie’s presentation because they are warranted. Bernie plans his evenings meticulously. He ensures the sound is perfect, he thoroughly researches his period and choices and then, with Diana’s support, he has the happy knack of mixing his delightful choices into a gorgeous mix thus creating a wonderful evening. Just like the Hollywood phenomenon, The Great American Song Book is a further example of that particular American artistry in the arts of film production, song writing, big band sound, etc. What a period and we heard beautiful examples from Count Basie, Barbara Streisand, etc. What a treat. Sadly, this creation was only heard by a small handful of members. All that work, all that knowledge enjoyed by so few. Lets be more aware of such effort when advertised in our magazine and make a conscious effort to try and support them more positively in the future. Thankyou Bernie and Diana for some gorgeous sounds. Submitted by Rosemary Ferguson Most of the music nights I attend are spent as a volunteer behind the bar, tonight however I managed to spend most of the evening in the intimate company of a few club members .... there to appreciate an absolutely lovely evening of music arranged and organized by Bernie, and his computer "doodler' wife Diana. The American Song Book was a joy to listen to, the best yet. Bernie's choice was superb, the mixture just right .... even a bit of a tease halfway, for us to try and recognise a duet ... not easy ... but one or two managed to find the right answer. The music, songs, jazz spanned from yesteryear till today and made two and a half hours into pure entertainment, Thank you Bernie and Diana. Tracy Bird

Tuesday 4th December - Ladies & Gents Who Lunch Yet another new venue for the Juliets, travelling down the coast to Villacana. Maggie, thankyou for

another very pleasant lunch where 20 ladies dined at Enrique’s Golf Restaurant (formally known as the Upper Deck). The food was very generous, the waiters giving friendly service. Quite

noisy at times - we used to say the Spanish were noisy in restaurants but I'm beginning to

think we are a very close second. Submitted by Norma Danby.

The Romeos also travelled to a new venue, Cortijo Cancelada. Nice venue with plenty of parking, and also having a log fire. Unfortunately the menu del dia was thought not to be up to par. Thanks Doug .

Friday 6th December - Christmas Quiz Night. A great time was had by all at Ron and Andrea’s Christmas Quiz, The first surprise was when Ron appeared from behind the blue curtain dressed as Father Christmas. Time and effort had been put into the rounds of questions which all started with the participants singing to a Christmas song, then 10 questions loosely associated with the song. Many people had made the effort to be festive, my team and others were wearing Reindeer horns or Christ-mas hats. The big surprise for my team was when we pipped Doug’s team which had been leading all evening by ½ point!!!! Many thanks Ron and Andrea you are booked for next December.

Why not come along; We meet Monday mornings no later than 9.45am for a 10.00am start. Late arrivals cannot be guaranteed a

game. Players are organised by ‘ranking’ in order to have teams

of more or less equal standing. Most matches are played over 16 ends but this can be 18 by

mutual agreement of all players.

Dress code is predominantly white but the critical factor is foot-

wear. Shoes must be smooth-soled with no ‘pimples or crinkles’. This is to prevent undue damage to playing surface which is the duty of all to maintain in good condi-

tion.

Beginners will be coached by prior arrangement to achieve the required level to compete.

The title was deliberately chosen as most of us play Monday only.

We are an informal group and not ‘Officially Recognised’. Hence this gives us a de-gree of license when interpreting the rules as officially prescribed. Alan Whiteman

Bowling at Best! Fun at Rest! Wine at Test! Have a good time! Alan

International Club of Estepona - Golf Society We play twice a week, Tuesday and Friday, at Casares Costa Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. The twice weekly

competition is organised on a ‘Roll- Up’ basis and we play individual stableford,

using full handicaps. Tee off times vary between 08.15 and 08.30am, dependent

upon the time of year, and on a good day we can have 12 or more players rolling up. It’s all very friendly, light hearted and is open to all.

We traditionally have two major competitions a year. The Spring Cup, Stableford

Competition at Dona Julia Golf Club. 8.00am for 8.45am Shot Gun Start 22nd

April 2014, 46€ Green Fee. 3€ entry Fee. Please Print your Name. Handicap and

Telephone Number on club poster.

If you have not entered an ICE golf competition before, please put an *asterisk*

next to your name to be eligible for the newcomers prize. The Autumn Cup will take place during October. These two competitions have be-

come great social events with a very popular celebratory luncheon after each.

The Ice Club Order Of Merit competition. The trophy will be awarded to the player recording the best 10 individual cards achieved at the Tuesday and Friday ‘Roll-

Ups’ during the 12 months between each Spring Cup.

In addition we also arrange ‘Away Days’, every 4 to 6 weeks, to other golf courses within the local area. It is always a treat to play at other clubs and we are usually

given a preferential rate. Keep your eye on the club magazine and web

site for details of all activities. If you would like to get involved, phone or

enrol on our e-mailing list. Contact and Golf Organiser: Alan Davis Tel: 952 897 670 Mob: 699 712 804, e-mail: [email protected]

NEW CHURCH SERVICES

This is funny now but can't you actually see this happening SOME day!

PASTOR: "Praise the Lord!"

CONGREGATION: "Hallelujah!"

PASTOR: "Will everyone please turn on their tablet, PC, iPad, Smart Phone or Kindle Bibles to 1 Cor. 13:13. And please switch on your Bluetooth to download the sermon."

P-a-u-s-e......

"Now, Let us pray committing this week into God's hands.

Open your Apps, BBM, Twitter or Facebook, and chat with God"

S-i-l-e-n-c-e

"As we take our Sunday tithes and offerings, please have your credit and debit cards ready."

"You can log on to the church Wi-Fi using the password 'Lord909887.”

The ushers will circulate mobile card swipe machines among the worshippers:

a.. Those who prefer to make electronic fund transfers are directed to computers and laptops

at the rear of the church.

b. Those who prefer to use iPads can open them.

c. Those who prefer telephone banking, take out your cell phones to transfer your contribu-tions to the church account.

The holy atmosphere of the Church becomes truly electrified as ALL the smart phones,

iPads, PCs and laptops beep and flicker!

Final Blessing and Closing Announcements..

a. This week's ministry cell meetings will be held on the various Facebook group pages

where the usual group chatting takes place. Please log in and don't miss out.

b. Thursday's Bible study will be held live on Skype at 1900hrs GMT. Please don't miss out.

c. You can follow your Pastor on Twitter this weekend for counselling and prayers

God bless you and have a nice day.

I called your house the other day and was told you were down at

your favourite biker bar with some friends. I wasn't sure where

that was, but was told I wouldn't have much trouble finding

it. Sure enough, I drove just a couple blocks and there it was...

There is nothing like the feel of the sun on your face and the wind in your hair, is there? Submitted by Dave Hackett
