Tactical Communications Overview

Workshop overview:This workshop will cover the general area of military tacticalcommunications, including voice and data. Variouspropagation modes will be considered including line-of-sight, troposcatter, satcom, and ionospheric skywave. Wewill also consider anti-jam techniques such as frequencyhopping and direct sequence spread spectrum. Thetreatment will also include data links for ISR platforms.

Who should attend? At the completion of this Tactical Communications workshopthe attendees will:• Have a deeper understanding of the operational

principles and underlying technologies of modern tacticalcomm systems.

• Have a wider understanding of the complex linkagesbetween technology, people, process, tools, businessbenefit and balance of investment decisions.

• Understand how making significant investment in relevantS&T can lead to more effective defence systems.

• Be able to better articulate the relationships betweenunderlying technologies and tactical comm systems.

• Be able to better execute your responsibilities within thewider communications arena.

Enabling SOA in the tacticaldomain

Workshop overview:The NATO STO group IST-118’s title and aim is to giveSOA recommendations for disadvantaged grids inthe tactical domain. This workshop gives anoverview of the group’s work, covering centralaspects pertaining to enabling SOA in the tacticaldomain.

Why should you attend? The workshop gives an overview of SOA and thechallenges related to applying this paradigm intactical networks. Anyone interested in learningabout recent developments within this area canbenefit from attending the workshop, which willcover the state-of-the-art of selected topics withinthis area. Special emphasis is on the relevance toNATO and FMN/NFIP.

About the Organisation:NATO IST -118 SOA recommendations for disadvantaged grids inthe tactical domain” is a Research Task Group(RTG) of NATO Science and TechnologyOrganization with members from 6 countries (NLD –lead nation, NOR, POL, GBR, GER, USA). The goal ofthe RTG is to identify the types of information thatare exchanged at the tactical level and use theseto do experimenting and testing with possible SOAimprovements. Based on the results, the goal is toprovide guidance (best practices) to make SOAapplicable on battlefield disadvantaged grids, inthe form of a Tactical SOA Profile.
