SLOVAK PLASTIC CLUSTER (SPC)

Interest association of legal persons in field of plastics processing and related industries.

The associated companies are competitors on one hand, on the other hand they need to solve the same kind of problems and share the same resources.

SPC MANAGES THE DATABASE OF 386 COMPANIES(having over 20 employees),

which participate in branch of rubber and plastic processing and related branches (for example recycling of sorted materials, plastic production in primary form etc.).

• The main part of companies belong to NACE:

29 „the production of motor vehicles, other components and equipment” and to

27 electro-technical branch”.

• Another part of companies (more than 110 are big companies) belongs to NACE 22 „the manufacturing of rubber and plastic products”.

The sector of plastic processing is the second biggestin Slovakia

up to generated economy result pre-tax (after automotive industry).

• We can define 71 companies, which have more than 200employees, as key corporations in Slovak plastic andrubber industry.

• 7 corporations (9,9 %) of these make the rubber productsmainly for automotive industry

• The other 38,4 % companies are big corporations, where 6 bigcorporations with Slovak capital are also included. They areproducers of foils, packing materials, plastic products forelectrotechnical industry (household appliances, mobile phonesand computers), for building industry (pipes, tubes, plasticwindows etc.) and medicine.

• The significant section of key players in plastic industry (51,7 %)are exclusively formed by providers of automotive industrywho are the providers of TIER I or TIER II (for various brands ofautomobiles).

Support of networking/clustering

• SPC increases the public awareness in field of professional issues and supports experience sharing (conferences, seminars, workshops and webinars).

• SPC creates and maintains up to date databases of organizations in research, testing, plastics and rubber processing, education as well as databases of organizations in related sectors

Increase in capacity and skills of suppliers and support of cost decrease in the member companies

• SPC coordinates common purchases of energy for its members. Currently we start a project aimed at common material/resource purchase.

• SPC supports quality and functionality of supplier chains (e.g. education in field of purchasing).

Strengthening of external relations (export) and development of new production projects

• For its members SPC processes statistical data about development of plastics and rubber processing sector.

• It searches for partners to cooperate in various types of projects e.g. common trade fair visits, common booths at fairs, presentations, commercial visits that bring new opportunities for cooperation.

• SPC searches for innovative ideas and innovative businesses. Supports their presentation and helps to search for financial resources

Support of skills for the labour market in the strategic areas of plastics processing sector

• SPC intermediates cooperation between high school and university students, and companies in several ways. It supports students internships and excursion in the companies.

• SPC supports partnership between companies and education institutions (schools), mainly focused on the real development of dual education plastics processing sector.

• The SPC supports corporate education in the field of injection moulding through innovative technologies - teaching software (PICAT II).

THE CHALLENGES

Therefore the Slovak Plastic Cluster has at 3 main challenges:

• Preparing of new education and study branches for vocational school and their application for Dual Education. New branches must be prepared as multi specialization ones – chemistry, engineering, electro-technology. The new educational branches must be also experimentally verified (school year 2020/2021).

• Supporting of applied research (the connecting between resolutions of basic research and practice). The SPC will focus on promoting recycling, new materials and new technologies in the near future

• Preparing of new study multi specialization programme at universities and supporting the students on working on research tasks in companies.
