Farewell to retiring National Librarian Jan FullertonAfter 43 years at the National Library of Australia, the last 11 as Director-General, JanFullerton, the first female head of an Australiancollecting institution retired last week.

This photograph was taken at her farewell

event last Thursday, which was covered by ABC Television and the Canberra Times.

A feature of the event was a performance bythe library’s National Kazoo Orchestra. Partinggifts included a photograph album compiled bystaff; a lemon tree; life membership of theFriends of the National Library, and a volunteer

application pack.Her successor has yet to be appointed.

ALIA has launched its Every Member An Advocate kit, which providesinteresting ‘factoids’. For example, didyou know that Australian spend nearlyfive times as much on wine as they doon public libraries? Get your kit atwww.alia.org.au/emaa.

The association has made 2010 its‘year of advocacy’ and has run a seriesof workshops around the country. Thefinal sessions are in Sydney on 11 and12 October and Perth on 15 and 16

The Brisbane Open House program on October 2, which includes a behind-the-scenes look at the State Library of Queensland, is likely to become anannual fixture. It is an initiative of the Queensland Government Architectand the Brisbane Development Association, and this year it is expected thatmore than 10,000 visitors will participate in tours around buildings withinteresting spaces that are normally closed off to the public.

Slovenian minister’s gift to Victoria GovernmentOn Monday evening, at a special reception at the State Library of Victoria,Dr Bostjan Zeks, Minister for Slovenes Abroad, presented Victorian ArtsMinister Peter Batchelor with the Iconotheca Valvasoriana, a 17-volumefacsimile edition of a 17th century collection that is now part of the CroatianState Archives. The original was the work of Janes Vajkard Valvasor, aSlovenian nobleman who bankrupted himself collecting works by the likesof Rembrandt and Durer, as well as commissioning his own illustrations of the flora and fauna of the times.

Only 100 copies of the facsimile edition exist. They are being given tomajor libraries around the world to draw attention to Slovenian culture andhistory. The State Library of Victoria was chosen to receive the Australiancopy in recognition of the strength of the Slovenian community in the state.

Aesop’s Fables go online at the British Library

The British Library has digitised more than 250 manuscripts handwritten inancient Greek, including a collection of Aesopic fables discovered on MountAthos in 1844. A further 250 documents are to follow in 2012. The initiativehas been sponsored by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

Library Systems & Services, a private American company, has woncontracts to run ailing public libraries in four states—Tennessee, Texas,Oregon and California—and is now the country’s fifth largest library

operator. However, its latest deal, to take over a successful Los Angeleslibrary service, has caused concern among staff and library users.

SA library closureThe ABC reports that Port AdelaideEnfield’s council is likely to seek afunding extension from the SouthAustralian Government to keep itslibrary open at the Angle Park Parks Community Centre.

It reported that ‘a large part of the centre will be closed within sixmonths and the whole site withintwo years as part of South

Australian budget cuts.’

New head of university libraryJane Long, currently with CSIRO,will become university librarian atthe University of Tasmania on 4

January 2011. She will take over from Linda Luther who is retiring.

Now that the dust has settled from the South Australian Government budget,announcement on 16 September, public libraries in the state are looking at ashortfall of $1 million in 2013-2014, while the State Library of SouthAustralia will need to save $400,000 over a three year period.

The South Australian Government has also indicated that it will notmake available the $3 million that public libraries had hoped for as acontribution to the cost of one library management system for the state.

A joint statement has been issued by ALIA and Public Libraries SouthAustralia, describing the reasoning behind the cuts as ‘flawed logic, false

economy and cost-shifting.’ ALIA executive director Sue Hutley said, ‘Wefear this may be the thin edge of the wedge, with the State Governmentseeing public libraries as an easy target for spending cuts in the future.

‘As evidenced by the experience of the State Government in WesternAustralia earlier this year, politicians attack public libraries at their peril.These institutions are much loved by taxpayers and voters, and even themost moderate of community members will rise up to defend their locallibrary if they believe it is under threat.

‘We recognise that the public sector as a whole in South Australia hassuffered the brunt of this round of government cutbacks and we are notasking for public libraries to be made a special case. However, we arecalling for the government to reconsider a $3 million investment in onestatewide library management system and to make a commitment before 30June 2011 to a per capita contribution to public library funding from 2011-2012 onwards.’ More on the website www.alia.org.au/advocacy.

South Australian budget signals cuts for libraries

New report values academicand other types of librariesThe American Association of College andResearch Libraries has a new publicationentitled The Value of Academic Libraries: AComprehensive Research Review and Report .

At 172 pages, it lives up to its title and will be of interest, not only to academic institutions, but also to school and public libraries.

The International Conference on Digital Library Management will take placein Science City, Kolkata, from 11 to 13 January 2011. The theme of the

Technology for libraries conference in India 2011

Brisbane City Council is running more than 40 free sustainable livingseminars in libraries across the city throughout October. The events willcover growing vegetables, recycling, home renovations, ecologically-friendly fashion and parenting. The annual Banned Books Week takes place in the US this year from 25September to 2 October. Its aim is to promote the benefits of free and openaccess to information, while drawing attention to the dangers of censorship.A partnership between booksellers, libraries, publishers and writers, thecampaign stresses ‘the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox

or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.’

Tree-huggers welcome at Campbelltown library

The new Campbelltown library in South Australia, which opened earlier thismonth, has an interactive cyber storytelling tree with special light effects for storytime. It is a feature of the $8.9 million council and federal governmentfunded project, which has made this the largest public library in the state.

New print-on-demand book facility for Australia
