ART AND DESIGN Why Art and Design? The opportunities for students of Art and Design, on completion of full-time education are enormous.

Qualifications in Art and Design subjects are also accepted as entry into many other careers. Career

prospects are available in the following fields: Ceramics, Textiles & Fashion, Product Design, Teaching,

Interior Design, Theatre Design, Fine Arts, Television, Graphic Design, Advertising, Architecture,

Publishing, Print Making, Illustration and Photography.

We aim to produce informed, independent and reflective art practitioners who can adapt their

knowledge, understanding and skills for a variety of further education courses in Art and Design. You will

undertake an intensive two year course in which you will have the opportunity to develop ideas

supported by a rich programme of tutorials, artist’s workshops, technical workshops and critical studies.

Enrichment Opportunities To further enrich and provide relevance to student learning we arrange trips to art galleries such as Tate

Modern, Tate Britain, Saatchi Gallery and Ikon Gallery. Annually we have an artist in residence to help

sixth form students to develop their art techniques which is a part of the Outreach programme. We also

encourage students to enter their work in competitions, exhibit their work in The Mall Galleries in London

and exhibit their work online for the Saatchi Gallery.

Annually selected students enter the Articulation competition at the Ikon Gallery and later have competed

at Cambridge University where Jon Snow has presented the awards. Students also have the opportunity

to teach or support lower school students, this fantastic way of sharing good practice as well as having an

excellent reference for UCAS. We have outside speakers from further education to discuss career

opportunities within the creative industries.

ECONOMICS

Why Economics? Economics provides students with a detailed understanding of how the world they live in works, from the

purpose of interest rates, the determination of prices, how different levels of competitiveness come

about and affect us, the distribution of income and wealth, why Governments set taxes, and much more.

Economics underpins our lives every single day and students get the chance to study the intricacies of

this.

Fundamentally the course content is never fixed, what is taught is shaped by what is happening in the

current moment. If students go home and watch the news or read the newspaper, it is very likely

something from that will shape the next lessons they have in Economics, it is totally rooted in the real

world.

The course provides students with an excellent complement to those interested in History, Mathematics,

Finance, Banking, Business, Human Geography and plenty of other fields of study and work.

Enrichment Opportunities The course will provide opportunities for students to see talks from those in industry, including the

banking sector, as well as chances to visit places. Students are able to take part in the ‘tutor2u’

examination workshops, where they will review a range of key topics and develop their examination

skills. There will also be chance for students to have talks from those who are working on the local

economy, such as the West Midlands Economic Forum.

FRENCH Why French? Students, who have the ability to offer potential employers a competent and fluent level of French with

high degree of accuracy, possess an extremely marketable and sought after skill. With the ongoing

development and rapidity of international communications, the relevance and value of a foreign

language has never been more obvious. Furthermore, continuing with a language sets a solid base for

learning further languages at a later stage.

AGCE Courses are now being designed to incorporate a vocational as well as academic dimension,

preparing students for exciting career opportunities in a wide range of professions. Students also study

film and literary texts to further deepen their knowledge.

These courses will also serve as excellent preparation for students wishing to proceed to Higher

Education. Advanced Level French aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of the language

and to develop in particular, the skill of speaking with a high degree of fluency. Former students have

continued to study French to degree level at Nottingham and Chester.

Enrichment Opportunities Students on this course are encouraged and indeed expected to spend time in France during their two

years of study. We offer students the opportunity to visit French speaking countries. In addition we have

previously organised a work placement in France. We encourage students to immerse themselves in the

language by regularly watching French films available in the library, as well as at the cinema and by

reading French magazines. Students can also attend French events hosted by universities. At Walsall

Academy, Session 3 is available to students to practise exam technique, watch a variety of foreign

language programs and engage in speaking practice at the languages café.

MATHEMATICS Why Mathematics? More and more subjects come to depend upon mathematical tools and there is a national shortage of

people with these skills. Mathematics will equip you with the necessary skills to cope with numerous

jobs and higher education courses. This is particularly true with scientific, technical, financial or

management careers. Mathematics is an important subject in the study of Engineering, Computing and

Physics.

A good A-level in Mathematics will ensure you are taken seriously by universities or in job interviews. The

Mathematics course allows you to build on GCSE work and also involves new ideas and powerful

techniques for solving problems. The mathematics units aim to develop your ability to solve problems

and to communicate clearly with mathematical language, as well as increasing your knowledge and

enjoyment of this important subject.

In recent years Walsall Academy has sent students to study mathematics at the best of British

universities like Oxford, Birmingham, Durham and Warwick.

Enrichment Opportunities Walsall Academy Maths Department has forged close links with Warwick University and our Sixth

Formers visit Warwick regularly for days of maths workshops or series of lessons in preparation for the

entrance examinations required by top universities like Cambridge and Warwick. Students were able to

attend a lecture by the famous physicist, mathematician and TV producer Simon Singh and were able to

meet and talk with him. Academy Sixth Formers visited Bletchley Park and learned how the famous

Enigma code was cracked. There is an Academy Year 12 Mathematical Association which meets weekly in

Session 3 and looks at extra-curricular topics in mathematics.

FURTHER MATHS Why Mathematics? Students taking Further Mathematics overwhelmingly find it to be an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating

and empowering experience. It is a challenging qualification, which both extends and deepens your

knowledge and understanding beyond the standard A level Mathematics. Students who do it often say it

is their favourite subject.

For someone who enjoys mathematics, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more

sophisticated mathematical concepts. As well as learning now areas of pure mathematics you will study

further applications of mathematics in mechanics, statistics and decision mathematics.

If you are planning to take a degree such as Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics etc. or

perhaps Mathematics itself, you will benefit enormously from taking Further Mathematics, at least to AS

level. AS Further Mathematics introduces new topics such as matrices and complex numbers that are

vital in many STEM degrees. Students who have studied Further Mathematics find the transition to such

degrees far more straightforward.

Enrichment Opportunities Further Mathematics qualifications are highly regarded and are warmly welcomed by universities.

Students who take Further Mathematics are really demonstrating a strong commitment to their studies,

as well as learning mathematics that is very useful for any mathematically rich degree. Some prestigious

university courses require you to have a Further Mathematics qualification and others may adjust their

grade requirements more favourably to students with Further Mathematics. If you are not planning to

study for mathematically rich degrees but are keen on mathematics you will find Further Mathematics a

very enjoyable course and having this qualification identifies you as having excellent analytical skills,

whatever area you are considering for a career.

and understanding of the world around them. The AGCE Course focuses on the interrelationships

between people and their varied environments and the questions, issues and problems which arise from

these relationships.

Geographers develop enquiry, decision making, fieldwork and research skills which will prepare them

well for Higher Education courses or a wide range of career choices. They also learn to appreciate the

significance of human values in decision making and to think critically on a range of issues. Students that

have studied Geography have gone onto a range of courses at university including: Masters in Geography

On-going work placements are also an integral part of some of the BTEC Sixth Form courses, e.g. Health

and Social Care and Travel and Tourism. There are also part time placements opportunities for Year 12

and Year 13 students to give an insight into their future career choices and/or University application.

Significantly, a number of students have also managed to gain apprenticeships with the same work

placement providers especially in engineering and administration.

The Academy boasts a team of staff that help students with their transition from Sixth Form into the

world of work or into Higher Education.

At the end of Year 12 students take part in a Higher Education week or Employability Skills week.
