EXCHANGE INSIGHTS WITH GLOBAL WATER THOUGHT LEADERS

Water experts, practitioners and academia gathered to share technical expertise at the Water Convention, which has established itself as the go-to conference for practical water solutions. Water Convention 2014 saw 1,320 delegates and a total of 348 oral and poster presentations.

Over 500 global water leaders gathered to discuss and co-create forward-looking solutions for urban, environmental and water issues at the Water Leaders Summit.

A major challenge facing humanity today is how to guarantee safe drinking

water and environmental sanitation for everyone in the planet. Innovative

solutions through appropriate technology bring hope that this challenge will be met

in the near future.

Dr Benedito Braga, President,

World Water Council

Water and energy are among the world’s pre-eminent development challenges. We need to coordinate

political governance, adopt coherent and integrated policies

and develop innovative strategies to tackle these issues.

Michel Jarraud, Chair of UN-Water

By 2040, 40% of the population will be living in an area with water

stress or water shortage. We’ll need the co-operation between the private and public sectors because

technology is going to be a key element of the solution.

Jean-Louis Chaussade, Chief Executive Officer,

Suez Environnment Company

I learned what other scientists are doing in my research field by attending their presentations and found the feedback from world-class experts very helpful for

my future research. I was also given the opportunity to express my hopes of future collaborations with them.

DISCOVER BUSINESS & COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES

Business Forums 2014 saw new thematic tracks covering Desalination & Water Reuse, Public-Private Partnerships and Industrial Parks in addition to the regional ones like India, Middle East & North Africa, Southeast Asia and China.

Billion-dollar projects were announced during the Business Forums. Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) announced the construction of the world’s largest reverse osmosis plant in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia, valued at S$2.7 billion. Municipalities in Indonesia, Laos, Philippines and Vietnam also shared over S$1 billion worth of investment projects for prospective solution providers.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day. It had variety and outstanding speakers from the venture capital

community, was well organised and included an excellent balance of information and inspiration.

Neil Palmer, Chief Executive Officer,

National Centre of Excellence in Desalination, Australia

It has been a great conference and the pavilion was amazing! I found the collection of water

industry leaders and entrepreneurs especially impressive, and I had some great conversations.

Mark Owen, CEO,

Puralytics, USA

Focused on technology innovation and commercialisation, the one-day TechXchange forum brought together 230 innovators, international water stakeholders and investors. Innovation Pavilion provided opportunities for early stage water-tech companies to network with potential investors and partners.

Attendees at the Industrial Water Solutions Forum (IWSF) gained insights on investment opportunities and challenges related to water for industrial sectors. Recognising the need to increase water efficiency, speakers from Coke, Nestlé and L’Oréal were present to share their experiences and best practices on industrial water management. Industrial Water has gained a global spotlight, and can be seen in new tracks across SIWW like the Water Convention Parallel Track “Water for Industries” and the Industrial Park Business Forum.

DEVELOPING WATER LEADERS FOR TOMORROW

HONOURING EXCELLENCE IN WATER INNOVATION

The inaugural Young Water Leaders Summit (YWLS) brought together water leaders of the future, with the aim of building competencies and transforming them into change agents in their home country and beyond. It also serves as a platform for collaborative dialogues, fiery debates, and networking among young professionals and industry leaders.

Following an intensive nine-week industry-oriented HydroPreneur programme run by globally-established start-up accelerators like the Lean LaunchPad and the Founder Institute, the best teams pitched to an audience of top water companies, angel investors and venture capitalists at Hydro Pitch Day on 2 June 2014.

The second edition of the Aquarius Programme brought together 19 senior water leaders from nine countries, ranging from regional heads to CEOs, to broaden and deepen their capabilities in order to effectively lead and manage a water business. The inaugural exclusive half-day Aqua Conversations CEO Roundtable saw CEOs of water companies converging for discussions on leadership challenges and experiences in the water industry. Topics ran the gamut of geopolitical and infrastructure trends in Asia, to the value of leveraging cultural diversity to enhance organisational performance.

Orange County Water District was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2014 for its exemplary work in groundwater management and water reclamation using advanced water reuse technologies, as well as its achievements in public policy and community outreach.

The Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2016 Call for Nominations will commence in 2015. Visit www.siww.com.sg for updates.
