GREETINGS SORORS! It is indeed an honor and personal privilege to again represent you as your State Leadership for the 2012-2013 Centennial sorority year. Can you believe it has been 10 decades? currently participating in the #DSTVOTE2012 Twitter campaign and embodying the message, “Less Social, More Social Action.” Due to this excitement, the chapter has also decided to revamp plans for next semester with bigger and better events to electrify and educate the campus. Although small in number, the Theta Epsilon chapter continues to prove that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a movement of quality, not quantity! Keep it up, sorors!

With the Centennial Celebration rapidly approaching, the Theta Epsilon chapter has been inspired to take their programming to the next level. In this spirit, sorors unanimously decided to increase their hours of community service; both individually and collectively, reconstruct traditional programs to focus solely on the 5 Point Programmatic Thrust and sorority initiatives, strengthen the chapter’s social media presence with a new website, and raise the bar for academic achievement and leadership development. In addition to planning ahead and improving the quality of the chapter, sorors are

Back to the Basics: Scholarship, Sisterhood, and Service - Theta Epsilon

Since the induction of five new initiates in April 2012, it seems as if the Theta Epsilon Chapter continues to get better as time goes on. This Fall semester, the chapter has focused on effective programming; promoting new, fresh ideas; and continuing to foster the sisterly bond that is Theta Epsilon. In an effort to raise awareness of the sorority to the campus, sorors hosted A Day With The Deltas. This event consisted of the signature fundraiser “Divas Delectables” and an educational program entitled, “Things I Wish I Knew As A Freshman.” Prior to A Day With The Deltas, the chapter hosted a “Send Us to Centennial” Car Wash, participated in community service with the Center for Prevention of Abuse, and completed their first study table of the semester.

East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness As a public service organization, Delta Sigma Theta is committed to empowering the community through active service. Our national physical and mental health initiative is “Healthy Lifestyles for the Family: Preserving the Mind, Body and Spirit.” The goal is to raise awareness of chronic illnesses in African-American families, especially those that adversely impact woman. Breast cancer awareness is only a small component of the national programs and a current initiative of the national leadership team. Breast cancer awareness educates women about the importance of early detection. More and more women are getting mammograms to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. As a result, breast cancer deaths are on the decline. While October is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, everyone is encouraged to visit the www.NBCAM.org website, which is a year-round resource for breast cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and the general public.

The program began with a discussion in regards to flexible and fixed spending habits. The discussion transitioned to a real life simulation of expenses one encounters in adulthood. We gave each student a standard salary represented by beans to use to purchase necessary or desirable items, teaching them budgeting skills. Students were forced to make real life decisions on what items they needed or could live without in order to make their salary stretch.

D E L T A F I L E S

This was an open forum discussion allowing students to share their experiences with gun violence. Solutions were generated addressing ways to improve our communities to end gun violence. We promoted the trending topic of #WhatIfChicago throughout the program to get our solutions heard for the political debate. This program allowed students to think in a different perspective toward gun violence and the role they play in this issue.

R E S O L U T I O N R E M I X

The chapter brought in a local line dance expert to demonstrate three high energy slides. At the start of the event, the instructor explained the correlation between line dancing and exercise and introduced the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles to prevent diabetes. This program continues every semester.

The Peoria Alumnae chapter has diligently participated in the Peoria Voter Registration Effort. The Deltas that are registrars walked neighborhoods, set up tables at groceries stores and at Senior citizens housing complexes in an effort to help get the 7,000 unregistered African American citizens in Peoria registered to vote! As part of an ongoing commitment to public service, the Peoria Alumnae Chapter also adopted a two mile section of a local road. With the Adopt-A-Highway cleanup project, the chapter is committed to cleaning the area 4x a year. The first clean up date was held on Saturday, Oct. 20th and it was a great success.

The members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. believe that “Knowledge is Power”. As a result, the effort to encourage reading and literacy in Peoria’s Youth by donating children’s books to schools in District 150 was a great success.

Approximately 200 members of the Delta Sigma Theta Inc. from throughout the state attended the Illinois Statewide Founders Day Weekend which was hosted by the Peoria Alumnae Chapter. It was a three day celebration in Central Illinois that included a welcome reception, a Rededication Ceremony, educational workshops, community service and an Ecumenical service.

In keeping with the sorority’s Educational Thrust to support Education initiatives, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. supported two newly-constructed schools and a local high school in Peoria which were in need of community support. Sorority members and the community were asked to donate two (or more) books.

On March 24th, a presentation was made to the Principals of the Glen Oak Community Learning Center, Harrison Community Learning Center and Manual High School. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was proud to donate a total of 1200 books.

Fall 2012 ● Sisterly Ties – Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – Illinois State Newsletter ●

Q) What are some “Pearls of Wisdom” Collegiates should know before transitioning into an Alumnae Chapter?

A) Collegiates should begin to research Alumnae chapters prior to graduating. It would be helpful for the collegiate soror to visit the alumnae chapter they are looking to go to or visit any alumnae chapter, to observe and get a feel of environment. Some alumnae chapters have different incentives to assist collegiates in joining. Collegiates have up to 6 months after graduating to transfer all or part of your current chapter dues.

Q) What is the major difference between a Collegiate chapter meeting and an Alumnae chapter meeting?

A) The size of the chapter. There are more members so it can be overwhelming and their budgets are more. Alumnae chapters conduct chapter meetings and Delta business the same as collegiate chapters, according to our Chapter Management and other Delta resources. Collegiates should find the chapter that best fits you and be ready to work as Alumnae sorors welcome their fresh new creative ideas.

Q) Inquiring minds want to know, what are your Delta aspirations once you complete your term as State Coordinator.

A) To serve Delta in any capacity the Lord sees fit for me to do.

Ask Melanie ?

The State of Illinois wants to congratulate Elizabeth Elie, member of the Zeta Iota Chapter, for serving as the 2011-2012 Northern Illinois University Homecoming Queen. This made her the 4th Delta from the Zeta Iota chapter to bring home the crown. Elizabeth was initiated into the Zeta Iota Chapter on April 16, 2011. Since becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta, she has exemplified true dedication, commitment, and loyalty to the Sorority’s mission and to the NIU Campus and Community. Elizabeth Elie went above and beyond while campaigning for the Homecoming Queen title and received more than 560 votes from the student body.

Zeta Iota Simulates People of the African Diaspora

Fall 2012 ● Sisterly Ties – Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – Illinois State Newsletter ●

Guests were also educated on the pros and cons of the diaspora and were able to hear testimonials from people, like African students, who have been directly affected by diaspora. To demonstrate the diaspora, Zeta Iota engaged attendees in an icebreaker that mimicked the African diaspora. Guests were given differently colored cards numbered 1-10. They were initially grouped by colors and given the opportunity to get to know the people in their groups. They were then moved to groups that consisted of people who had their same card number (but different color cards). The dispersed audience was instructed to cheer for their original group and color, despite belonging to new groups. This activity simulated how people of diaspora are separated from their place of origin, but still feel connected to it.

The Zeta Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. held its first program of the semester on September 24, 2012; this program titled “People of the Diaspora” fell under the International Awareness & Involvement Thrust of Delta Sigma Theta’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust. The purpose of the program was to enlighten people to the topic of the African diaspora. The audience was able to learn about how far-reaching diaspora has been through statistics of the presence of African descendants in such distant countries as Brazil, Haiti, and the US.

Welcome to the Fall Edition 2012 of the Sisterly Ties Illinois newsletter. I am happy to work with the new chapter journalists this year. It is GOOD TO BE A DELTA! I ask that all chapter journalists continue to submit news concerning their chapter commitment and service to the community. You’ve done Illinois proud. Please continue ‘journaling’ your chapter and individual achievements. Is your chapter profiled in Sisterly Ties? If not, why not?
