Why a Shrinky Dink?

Periodic Properties Unit Test:

You may write notes on one side of a

3”x5” card (as always)

Because this unit is all about the

periodic table, it is nice to be able to use

a periodic table on the test. You will be given the same “clean” periodic table

as always.

If you wish to use a periodic table you’ve written

notes on, the Shrinky Dink is it!

Why a Shrinky Dink?

But why does it have to be on plastic?

The reason teachers let you write a 3x5

card (or other notes) for a test is to force

you to REVIEW. That’s why 3x5 cards have to be handwritten.

That’s why you have to make your own periodic

table (instead of just making a photocopy of one).

We use Shrinky-Plastic because it is a

dehydration polymer (chemistry!!), and

doing the shrinking reaction is cool.

What goes on my Shrinky Dink?

We hand out the

small copies of the

periodic table

because tracing it

is faster than

writing it freehand.

The Shrinky-Plastic is slick on one side

and rough on the other.

We recommend fine point marker on

the slick side (to outline and write

symbols)

You can color-code sections

by the color of the boxes

Or do the boxes the same

color, then color them in (from

the back) with colored pencil.

There are many recommendations given

on the YELLOW paper you were given in

class.Color-coding

sections is popular.

Numbering periods

and groups is popular.

Labeling valence

and common ion is

popular.

Adding trend arrows

is useful.

We STRONGLY encourage students to

NOT shrink their tables until AFTER the

unit test.

Bigger is easier to read if

you crammed it with info.

Sometimes things go wrong

in the shrinking process and it

becomes hard to read.

Protect my Shrinky Dink!

After shrinking, you may want to cover

your Shrinky-Dink with clear packing tape

to preserve it!

If you keep it in your wallet

or backpack, the ink will start

to rub off eventually if it isn’t

protected by a layer of tape.

Why should you protect it

and save it forever?

Because we’ll let you use

it on OTHER unit tests as

well as this one!
