When pioneers in Science and Engineering such as Sir ChristopherCockerell, CBE who invented the Hovercraft and Sir James Dyson,CBE, inventor of the Dyson vacuum cleaner have walked the same corridors as many students from Gresham’s in Holt it is wonderful to seethat Science and Engineering is still thriving at the School with many students still showing a keen interest in developing careers in thesefields. Over the summer some Gresham’s students chose to spend some of their summer holidays attending courses to help further theirknowledge in a variety of engineering fields hosted by The SmallpeiceTrust.

The Smallpeice Trust is an independent charitable trust which promotesEngineering as a career primarily through the provision of residentialcourses for young people aged 12 to 18. Clare Mawson, an Upper Sixthstudent at Gresham’s attended a Naval Architecture course at PlymouthUniversity, she said “Gresham’s Physics department provided me withinformation about Engineering courses The Smallpeice Trust were running. It was a great experience as I found the Dock Yard tour fascinating and team design and build project on mini-submarines great

fun. It made me all themore interested inpursuing a career in

this area and I am nowapplying to study Naval Architecture at university.

Nick Twyman, a LowerSixth student with a keen interest in Science and who withthe help of Gresham’sCareers Department decided to attend a Nuclear Engineering

course at The University of Manchester. The Smallpeice Trust, incollaboration with the National Nuclear Laboratory provided aninsight into some of the challenges facingnuclear industry today.

The course included acombination of presentations, work-shops, practical ‘design and make’ projects, and a final assessmentwhich involved demonstrating their finished product, complete with design drawings, method statements and risk assessments. The designand make project challenged students to move spent nuclear fuel from astorage facility. It involved the students pitching their ideas in a“Dragon’s Den” type scenario in order to gain funding, allowing them to then go out and make their design.

Nick said, “Before going on the course I was nervous, as the only peoplewho would possibly want to go on a “Nuclear Engineering” tastercourse, during their summer holidays, would be socially awkward“nerds”. This was not the case. I met many new people and had a lot of fun whilst learning a great deal about this field of work, which I hadpreviously known very little about. The course consisted of one main engineering task and a variety of lectures. I highly recommend this andany other of The Smallpeice Trust courses as they really help to developyour knowledge in your area of interest.”

Gresham’s is also delighted to be entering the Student Robotics competition this year where students in the Sixth Form are tasked with designing, building and testing their own robots ready to competeagainst other teams. The School will this year be hosting the Eastern Region events with the kickstart opening event on October 12, with anumber of local schools across Norfolk already signed up to take part.

The cricket bat, donated and signed by Englandcricket captain Alastair Cook and the rest of theEssex Cricket Team, has already created quitea bit of interest and is sure to by one of the starlots. Also attracting interest is the book ‘TheCasual Vacancy’ written by JK Rowling underthe pseudonym Robert Galbraith. As a signedfirst edition it will perhaps in the future realisea considerable return. The Charity Auction on 12 October is accom-panied by a 3-course pre auction dinner with£5 from every ticket being donated to the char-ity. Tickets cost £35 per person and are on salenow at the White Horse. Strictly limited to 85people guests will be treated to pre dinnerdrinks and canapés upon arrival at 7pm withthe dinner commencing at 7.30pm before theauction at 9pm. Brewers Greene King who aresupporting the event have already donated akeg of their IPA with a free pint being offer toall those attending the auction. They have alsoagreed to sponsor the event, which will allowthe White Horse to advertise the event to aneven wider audience. Still to be announced byGreene King are the other lots that they will bedonating to the auction.Greene King Sales Development Manager Andrew Galpin said “We are delighted to havebeen asked to support this great event and tohelp raise money for such an important charity. We wish the White Horse and everyone involved the very best of luck and hope that it will raise ‘lots’ of money”.Amongst the other lots already promised aretickets to a meeting at Fakenham Race Course,a food hamper, tickets for two to Newmarketraces with access to the owners ring, a framedNorwich City shirt signed by the team and ayear’s swimming pass from WoodlandsLeisure.

Darren Walsgroveowner of the WhiteHorse said “This is areally exciting eventand I am delighted withthe support it has al-ready received - wehave high hopes that itwill raise a consider-able amount of moneyand help boost ourfundraising for Nel-son’s Journey. My thanks to GreeneKing and all those howhave already supportedthe event with items forthe auction. I knowthere are still more tocome so everyone atthe White Horse is hop-ing for a really greatevening”. The event is part of the White Horse’s yearlong fundraising commitments to their Charityof the Year, Nelson’s Journey, a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved children and young people throughout Norfolk.Based in Norwich the charity was founded in 1997 and has to date helped over 1,500 children between the ages of 0 to 17 inclusivewho have experienced the death of a signifi-cant person in their life. In the case of veryyoung children this is by giving support andadvice to the remaining parent or guardians. The name Nelson’s Journey was chosen to inspire and reflect the two main aspects of thecharity - it is local, hence the use of Norfolk’sown Admiral Nelson, while ‘Journey’ was chosen as bereavement is a journey which

begins the minute your loved one dies and lastsa lifetime. The work that the group begun 15years ago continues to develop and reachesnew highs each year. Entirely dependent on donations from individ-uals, groups, trusts and organisations, as wellas money raised by their own fundraisingevents, Nelson’s Journey’s vision is of a Norfolk where no bereaved child has to copealone with their loss and has the support they need to move forward positively with their lives. Full details of all the lots will be available at the White Horse from Friday 4 October. Sealed bids will be accepted until Friday 11 October and will be openedon the night when the lots are beingauctioned.

The Cromer RNLI lifeboat rescue of the Pyrinand Fernebo, which saw 33 people saved fromthe sea on 9 January 1917, is to feature in an RNLI national touring exhibition commemorating the centenary of World WarOne (WW1). The charity’s exhibition, fundedby Arts Council England, is called Hope in theGreat War, and will honour the courage andbravery of the lifeboat crew who risked theirlives to save others during WW1.

Cromer’s lifesaving story of 40 men launchingthe lifeboat, the formation of a human lifesaving chain and a second launch of the

lifeboat in worsening conditions is locallyrenowned, and will now feature in the exhibition alongside five other RNLI lifeboatservices that took place in communities acrossthe United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.Opening in February 2014 at the Henry BloggMuseum in Norfolk, Hope in the Great Warwill start a 4 year tour around RNLI museums, lifeboat stations and other museums.

Now the RNLI is asking the local communityin Cromer for family memories, photographsand artefacts connected to the RNLI lifeboatrescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo. The most

relevant items may be selected to feature within the exhibitionallowing the fullest story of therescue to be told nationally.

Becky Fletcher, RNLI HeritageProject Co-ordinator explains‘The outstanding efforts byCromer’s RNLI volunteers tosave lives in WW1 will now begiven a national voice.

Although many details are already known about the Pyrinand Fernebo rescues, findingpersonal memories and connections would undoubtedlybe of further inspiration.

‘We’re involving thecommunity in other ways too – locally, theRNLI is teaming upwith members of the1st Cromer Sea Scoutsto create a piece of art-work for the tour. Theyare creating a stainedglass interactive gamewhich will featurewithin the exhibition.’

Karen Drury, ScoutLeader at the 1stCromer Sea Scoutssays ‘The Pyrin andFernebo rescue story

for us is a very proud moment in Cromer’s his-tory. We feel immensely privileged to be in-volved in such an important project and byhelping to share the Cromer rescue with therest of the nation. Our Scouts, Cubs andBeavers are fascinated with the story of the res-cue, particularly when comparing technologyin our modern times and the lack of technologyand kit they had nearly 100 years ago, but theRNLI volunteers still managed to save livesbecause of the crew’s sheer bravery.

‘We are thrilled with the youngsters’ enthusiasm for this project and we are sure it is somethingthey will never forget. Hopefully they willcontinue to share the story and experience of this project with their children in years to come.’

To pass on any family memories, anecdotes, photos or letters, pleaseemail [email protected] or call the RNLI Henry Blogg Museumon 01263 511294.

New Actors at Sheringham Little TheatreTwo new actors are in the latest production from the award winningCromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society. Matt Scantlebury, who lives in Upper Sheringham and Glen Hall who lives in Brisley, near Fakenham, are both looking forward to being part of the hilarious comedy. Neither actor has acted at the Sheringham LittleTheatre before and they are enthusiastic about performing at such a popular venue.

Set in the 70s, the play is classic Russell - working classfamily life with all the joys andsorrows that come with it. Atits heart lies the story of twosisters’ rivalry expressedthrough a battle of householdpurchases - Betty has a new sofa, but Reeny’s justhad central heating put in!

Throw into the mix a daughter’s pregnancy, a slightly troubled adolescentand a bizarre moment with a ‘personal intimate massager’and you have all the ingredients for an hilarious, but very poignant, story.

Oh, and it’s set at Christmas, and we all know how that is always a perfect recipe for peace and harmony…

The hilarious comedy, Breezeblock Park, written by Willy Russell, author of Educating Rita, Shirley Valentine, Blood Brothers (and manyother productions), is on at the Sheringham Little Theatre from 16 to 19October. Box Office 01263 - 822347

Stylish New Look for Sheringham Little TheatreVisitors to the Sheringham Little Theatre will soon discover the coastalvenue has been given a completely new box office and café area.Work is currently underway to refurbish the foyer and visitor areas ofthe popular theatre, with a grand opening planned for Saturday, 30 November.

Debbie Thompson, director of the Little Theatre, said the refurbishmentwould make access to the box office and café much easier and wouldallow more people to enjoy the space.

“We were very lucky to receive a grant of £66,000 from the NorfolkCounty Council Community Construction Fund to improve the box office and café bar. This will see us move the box office and make it far more open and welcoming,” she said.

“At the same time we are moving the bar into the centre of the café, improving the flow for customers and to make it more efficient in termsof how the food is served.”

The refurbishment will allow up to 62 people to be seated and will create more cohesion between the theatre itself and the interval area.

It is the second phase of a major renovation programme at the LittleTheatre. The first stage saw the refurbishment of the exterior of thebuilding while the third phase – expected to take place in 2014 – willsee the creation of a new education and youth space.

“We are really looking forward to the new look café and box office,”she said. “Not only will the changes enhance the whole experience for

theatre-goers but they will also be of great benefit to our fantastic armyof volunteers who run the café for us.

“We will be holding a grand opening from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, 30November and hope members of the public will come along to see thenew areas for themselves and to meet members of our pantomime cast.”

90 years old this September! The WEA Sheringham Branch, which provides lecture series and day schools, is celebrating ninety years of adult education organised by volunteers in Sheringham this year.

Founded as the 'Sheringham Lecture Society' in the Autumn of 1923,the Rev. J Ingram Bryan,Ph.D. (Penn.) held the first series of eveninglectures on 'The Philosophy of English Literature'. Cambridge University had created the Board of Extra-Mural Studies in that year and Sheringham was one of the only two rural 'outposts' it created. Thefast train service connecting Sheringham to London via Cambridgemeant that the lecturers could travel easily between the University andthe Lecture Society.

The popularity of the lectures continued, with courses provided betweenSeptember and March every year including during World War Twowhen the local population was augmented by the military personnel stationed locally. Homework essays and end of course exams became a thing of the past but the Lecture Society's contacts with Cambridgecontinued until 1991 when the University of East Anglia took over. Then, however, education cuts in 1995 meant the association with theuniversities came to an end and the Sheringham Lecture Society becamea branch the Workers Educational Association which had been providingadult education throughout the country for many years.

To celebrate our 90th birthday, all current and past students are invitedto a celebration Afternoon Tea on Saturday 19 October at St Joseph'sCatholic Church Hall Cromer Road Sheringham at 3.30pm.

If you would like to come please contact Julia Dovey on10263 825457 or [email protected].

A Bridge-building ExerciseAnother successful crossing has just been completed by the BeestonCommon Management Group (BCMG). Volunteer members, Edwardand Francis Farrow have just replaced an aging two-plank bridge with a four-sleeper width bridge over a muddy stream on the Common.

The extra width will allow the path mower to cross as well as increasethe overall safety of the crossing and with its new wire-netting surfaceslipping should be prevented, as demonstrated by Bonnie (in the photograph), who tested the new bridge on its completion, Sunday 22September.

The five re-cycled ex-railway sleepers, which make up the bridge were the final instalment of new-build and as required replacementbridges that were proposed as part of the ‘Sheringham Trails’, a 2007 regeneration project, which linked coastal and inland paths into a six-mile scenic circular walk, taking in the cliffs, commons, woods, country lanes and Sheringham Park.

On Monday 16 September Tony and JoyceMorris celebrated their 70th (platinum) wedding anniversary at the Royal British Legion, Halsey House, inCromer.

Earlier at the weekendthey took their family outfor a special lunch at thePepper Pot in West Runton and then back toHalsey House for a glassof pink champagne andcake and to open theircards, including one fromthe Queen.

Tony and Joyce moved into Halsey House in June this year, after living in Sheringham for 25 years.Their great passion is

listening to classical music, and they own an extensive collection of CDs, holding mini-concerts for each other several evenings a

week. They also enjoy a fulland active social life withvisits from their family andfriends, as well as trips andoutings arranged by theBritish Legion.

During their 70 years ofmarriage a lot has changed. They got married during thewar in Southend at 8.30amin the morning, as Tony wasonly able to take a few daysleave from the Royal Navy. All their family and friendspooled their rations to createa wedding breakfast and

cake. Then they wentby train for a brief honeymoon in a cottage near Torquaywhich had been lentto them by a friend.

However the cottagewas old and the roofleaked, so they had tocover the floor with

pots and pans to catch the drips of rain. Theonly source of heating was a toaster that theystrung up on a string across the room!

On the return journey back to London theytravelled on a US troop train and ended upsharing their lunch with a carriage full ofAmerican GIs, who declared that Joyce's eggand sardine sandwiches were "the best ever -Maam".

In those days there was a saying that a war-time marriage would never last - but thismarriage has certainly stood the test of time.

Weather with Ned NimbusThe past three months turned out as forecast giving us a warm and generally sunny summer.

Luckily the sea breezes were kept to aminimum, July to September made upfor the cold between January and mostof June, the culprit for the cold being along run of winds out of the north. It is worth noting that we have notbeen in a warming trend for 15 yearsand for this reason 'global warming' has morphed into 'climate change'.The complication here is that differentials in weather on an annual basisdo not constitute climate change neither do one off storms or droughtswhich you can find throughout the world on an annual basis.

Last year crops suffered with a series of adverse growing conditionsacross the world and subsequent higher prices, this year prices havebeen falling because of much better growing conditions.

The next three months will be generally on the mild/warm side. Octobershould still bear some resemblance of summer whilst November andDecember will become more unsettled and changeable.

Temperature wise only December is likely to put a few days of coldweather together, this occurring in the first half of the month.Ned Nimbus

Page 16: Sheringham Independent 377

Dear Margaret,Last weekend will long remain in my memory. For me it startedwith the opening of the new Lighthouse Community Church. Worthy of an innovative design award for local architects SMG.So many hundreds turned up a visiting fire officer would have

had an apoplexy.A triumphantstart to an exciting newcommunity project.

I continued fighting my waythrough vastcrowds on to theold station to

present prizes for the best presented 1940s businesses and staff organised by the Chamber of Trade who have encouraged 90% of our local businesses to take part. The Sheringham 1940s weekend was going fullswing. The North Norfolk Railway ferried thousandsto attractions up and down the line. Despite months ofmeticulous planning by Trevor Eady and ChrissieRayment, overwhelmed by the numbers this year, they ran out of platform tickets.

The military vehicle parade and the NottinghamYouth Big Band kept the 1940s swinging late into

Saturday evening. Not being the tallest in the crowd it was onlywhen I stood on the plinth to make my speech, just prior to theSunday afternoon final marching parade, did I realise that it wasnot a few hundred people gathered but a few thousand. In every

direction there were denselypacked people as far as theeye could see, an amazingsight. Hundreds took part in the parade organised byGraham Deans, which respectfully ended the weekend with a minutes silence at Otterndorf Green.

As I write this letter hundredsof our volunteers will be

waking on Monday morning feeling exhausted but elated thattheir efforts produced such a wonderful weekend. I cannot remember seeing quite so many happy, laughing, joking, smiley

people all in one place in late September. Sheringham wasn’t justfilled with vast crowds and warm sunshine, over those two days;it was filled with well deserved pride.

Yours sincerely,Doug Smith, Mayor of Sheringham

Thousands thronged Sheringham during 40sweekend last month

Page 17: Sheringham Independent 377

Dear Margaret,It’s ‘hats in the air’ and ‘three cheers’ to everyone who made North Norfolk Railway’s 1940s weekend a resounding success at the Sheringham, Weybourne andHolt stations.

The official 40s programme heading underthe National Crown stated ‘your courage, your cheerfulness, you resolution, will bringus victory’. It certainly did then and historyhas been repeated 70 years on!

The sun shone and crowds arrived in their thousands, decked in wartimeuniforms and a magnificent array of 40s fashions.

More support than ever from the town of Sheringham and itsretail businesses wasso evident this year. After the Sunday parade through thetown, (courtesy of theefforts of GrahamDeans – Lobster publichouse landlord) a fitting flag loweringceremony was held on The Green by Sheringham station.

North Norfolk Railway’s GeneralManager, Trevor Eady, incorrectly addressedas Managing Director, caused laughter fromthe crowd when he said‘I didn’t expect mana-gerial promotion thisafternoon – I can only

put it down to the success of this year’s 40s weekend!’.

He then thanked everyone for their magnificent support, stating that theevent had grown steadily in popularity over the years.

A perfect rendition of ‘The Last Post’ was performed by the SalvationArmy Bandmaster, Paul Winterbourne, bringing the curtain down on atruly momentous weekend for Sheringham.

Yes, we are proud to be British, and even prouder to be long-standingSheringham residents.

Long may this wonderful nostalgic event continue, please accept ourhearty congratulations.

Yours sincerely, Charles and Jan Thirtle

Dear Margaret,I am sure I am among many locals and visitors who wouldlike to say a HUGE thank you to everyone on the NorthNorfolk Railway, both staffand volunteers, for a fantastic40s weekend. I know there is a tremendous amount of planning and organisation in-volved and this all came together to provide the best 40s weekend so far. It has been getting bigger and better every year and the weather made itjust perfect. The parade and closing ceremony on the Sunday was a greatway to finish such an event, giving everyone the chance to rememberthose times and all those that lost their lives during the war. It was goodto see how many local businesses took part this year with some brilliantwindow displays and many staff dressing up in 40s clothes. I was amongmany locals who also dressed in 40s clothes and, together with the re-enactors, it all added to the atmosphere of the weekend. Once again THANK YOUSue Bourne, Sheringham

In August 22 members ofthe Sheringham/MuzillacTwinning Associationtravelled to Muzillac inBrittany. The journey bycoach and train was or-ganised by Stuart Meakinin his usual quiet, effi-cient manner.Careful pairing of hostsand guests, as well as abalanced programme, en-sured it was a great suc-cess and, according to theChairman, Hugh Brad-bury, was the best of allfive visits so far. DougSmith, Mayor of Sher-ingham, was presentedwith a Muzillac townmedal and books on the local area by their Mayor, Jo Brohan. The programme included visits to The Resistance Museum at SaintMarcel, the fascinating collection at Lizio of working models madefrom scrap metal which were powered by solar and wind power. Allthese were created by a poet who "Doesn't ask for the moon, only a fewstars". A day trip to Quimper included a 'tasting' at a biscuit factory. Avisit to a local oyster farm challenged the chairman's French when act-ing as interpreter!Evening entertainment included a 'bring and share', a pancake eveningand plenty of singing and dancing. We are now planning the return visit to Sheringham next summer. For information about this Twinning the website is www.sheringham-muzillac.co.uk

THE INTERNATIONAL STAFF SONGSTERSIn their 33-year history the International Staff Songsters have established choral boundaries of excellence forThe Salvation Army worldwide. Founded in 1980 on the instruction of The Salvation Army’s internationalleader General Arnold Brown and under the direction of Lieutenant-Colonel Norman Bearcroft, the ISS haveacquired an impressive list of credits to their name. Over 25 recordings, radio and television appearances andmany miles of travel both in the UK and abroad are indicative of a vigorous and continuous ministry.

Under their successive leaders - Captain Len Ballantine, Major Peter Ayling and Andrew Blyth - their musical horizons have continued to evolve.Their current Leader, Dorothy Nancekievill, who was appointed in October 2003, has brought to the group her own personality and passion forsharing Christian music. The sheer range of music offered by the group has become their hallmark. Concerts include a menu for any appetite fromclassics to contemporary.

Membership includes singers from a cross-section of educational, professional andcommercial concerns, most of whom live within a 2½-hour drive of London.Weekly rehearsals in London and monthly journeys to the four corners of the UKto conduct Sunday worship services, visit hospitals and residential homes and givemusical festivals, all demand a high degree of personal commitment from thesongsters. Although a practical audition is mandatory for membership, the role ofthe Staff Songsters is not simply musical. The highest standards of Christian faithand living are required. This helps to ensure that the group’s communication runs deeper than the musicitself, sharing the message of God’s love with their listeners. Internationally theStaff Songsters have undertaken several overseas campaigns in such countries asCanada and Newfoundland, Norway and Sweden, the USA, France, TheNetherlands, Australia and New Zealand, and they have also undertaken aground-breaking tour of Zimbabwe and Southern Africa.2007 saw the songsters visit Finland, Estonia and Sweden during a tour over theEaster period; most recently the songsters visited The Netherlands early in 2010.In 2012, the ISS made its first visit to the South American continent, with a tourof the South America East Territory, followed by participation in the annual OldOrchard Beach meetings, near Boston, USA, as guests of the USA EasternTerritory. The group believe that the Holy Spirit himself is at work in this and willcontinue to minister in homes around the world where their recordings reinforcethat timeless theme.

Bodham Big Weekend to hand out £4,500 to charity

KELLING PROBUS CLUBIn the absence of our Chairman on holiday, Vice Chairman Tony O’Sheawelcomed 17 members and our guest speaker, Francis Farrow, to lunchat The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham on Thursday 19 September.

Francis is professionally a marine geophysicist but his hobby is the study of butterflies. His fascinating talk was entitled “BeestonButterflies” and covered the remarkable range of butterfly species foundon Beeston Common in Sheringham. The Common was designated a“Site of Special Scientific Interest” (SSSI) in 1968, and more recently in2005, a “Special Area of Conservation” (SAC). It features a number ofhabitats, such as heath, bog and fen, grassland and secondary woodland,a combination particularly suitable for butterfly life, and some 33species of butterfly have been recorded there. Francis has personallyseen most of these, and he noted that only three more resident specieshave been recorded in the whole of Norfolk.

His excellent slide show followed the seasons through early spring andsummer to show the very wide variety of habitats and plant speciesfavoured by each of over 30 butterfly species. He commented on thechanges which have been observed in the species populations, some of

which, like the Dingy Skipper, the Grayling and the Wall Brown havebecome rare or disappeared from the Common, while others, like theWhite-letter Hairstreak and the White Admiral are newcomers. He concluded by drawing attention to some unfavourable consequences ofclimate change, such as cool wet summers, dry springs and late frostsand especially the loss of habitat through tree and scrub encroachment.Bill Day proposed a vote of thanks for such an interesting presentation.

On matters of Club business, Secretary Geoffrey Goodman confirmedthat our Christmas lunch would be at The Links Hotel and firm commitments would be needed from members next month. The visit to Duxford Imperial War Museum was confirmed for Wednesday 13 November when we shall be joined by some members from the Cromerand Sheringham Probus Club.

Our next meeting is at The Dales on Thursday 17 October when RobSpray will talk on “Seasearch”.

If you would like to come along and join us, please contact KevinKlingo on 01263 824624.

There have been many presenters of BBC ‘sGardeners’ World since it was first broadcast in1968 but surely the best loved was the showslongest –serving presenter , Geoff Hamilton, who was associated with the programme from1979 until his death in 1996 when he suffered a heart attack on a charity bike ride.

His practical hands-on experience, down-to-earth approach to gardening, his desire to sharehis failures as well as his successes with theaudience, combined with a gentle humour weresome of the keys to his success and popularity. He was a committed and informed early

advocate of the organic approach to gardening, helping to dispel the ratherwidely held belief that organic gardening wasslightly odd and cranky.

In 1985 Geoff was responsible for moving theshow’s venue to his own garden at Barnsdale in Rutland. This garden, nowconsisting of 38 themed gardens over 8 acres remainsopen to the public and is run by his son Nick. NickHamilton’s passion for gardening started when he was aged 9 and after attending Writtle Collegewhich included a sandwich year placement atDarby Nursery Stock in Norfolk, he returned to Barnsdale in 1989 to work with his father inthe family business.

Nick took over the running of Barnsdale Gardens when Geoff died and has developed it into the inspirational garden that it is todayand which attracts over 40,000 visitors eachyear.

On 17 October Nick Hamilton will be comingto Sheringham to talk about his father and the

years of filming Gardeners World at Barnsdaleand everyone is welcome. Nick will also be bringing a selection of his plants fromBarnsdale to sell on the night.

The meeting will be held in the LighthouseCommunity Church, 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham commencing at 7.30pm and is freeto members with a charge of £3 for visitors. Please phone me for any other information on01263 825 364.

It has been announced that the government is pressing with plans to sell-off Royal Mail in the coming weeks, despite widespread oppositionfrom North Norfolk residents.

North Norfolk Labour Party has been campaigning against the sale ofanother "national treasure" through street stalls across the constituencyover the past few months. Nearly 2,000 people have opposed the plans, and residents have been particularly concerned about the effects privatisation may have on local communities.

It is expected that the company will be floated on the stock exchangeshortly.

Denise Burke, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for NorthNorfolk, said "The people of North Norfolk, much like the rest of thecountry, have serious concerns about what the government is doing withRoyal Mail. This is a company that does make a profit - it makes a hugeprofit and so there is no reason why they should want to sell it off otherthan for the sake political ideology.

The result of any such sale couldput at risk the daily delivery, jobs, and the universal service we all get.

We want to see villages like Hempstead, Happisburgh and Hindringham all get the same service that everyone else receives, and residents fear that this will nothappen with a private company.

There is an assumption that companies benefit from privatisation, but history tells us differently, and it is a real shame Norfolk's MPs cannot see that."

North Norfolk Labour Party will continue to protest the move at streetstalls and planned activities over the next month. Those unable to attendthe street stalls can sign the petition against the move atwww.norfolklabour.co.uk.

Fears Royal Mail privatisation will harmNorth Norfolk's postal service

We are developing our services and want to recruit a team of volunteer complementary therapists who would be willing to provide a service to ourpatients living locally. This would enable those people, who find travelling difficult, to benefit from our service wherever they live. There is no minimum amount of hours required; support and supervision will be provided.

We value all our Volunteers equally; whatever their role and however much time they can give us. The full list of the many roles that our Volunteerscan fill is shown on the Volunteering page of our website (see below) but at present we particularly need complementary therapists.

For further information, or for an informal visit, please contact Nichola Child, Therapy Team Lead,on 01485 543163.

For an application form, please contact us via our Website: www.norfolkhospice.org.uk, bytelephone 01485 543163 or by email: [email protected] Thank you

Phil Weston, owner of Wet Dog in Cromer, will soon be pushing himself well out of his comfort zone to helpraise money for the much needed CromerSkate Park when he completes a Skydive!!Having spent many years coaching Youth Football, Phil isvery keen on seeing both boys and girls of all ages and abilities follow their passions and desires and pursue their hobbies in the best surroundingswith the best facilities and most of all with friends and other like-minded people.

"Let’s face it," says Phil, "we all know kids tend to get a rough deal in general these days. They can’t gather in groups, wear what they want or enjoy their favourite pastime withoutgetting some stick from someone. This Skate Park is a must not just for the guys who want touse it, but Cromer as well – it will create a great place for people to meet, and to practise theirsport, whether it is Boarding, Scooter or BMX, but it will also create another great ‘draw’ forthe town – look at the success of the Mundesley and Sheringham Parks."

Phil and wife Kay meet a lot of the guys in the shop as they look at the latest gear, and havegot to know many of them well. "They are great kids, polite, well behaved and well-spoken,but above all show real passion for their sport," enthused Kay.

Phil is currently looking for sponsors for his jump and although very grateful to those whohave already donated, he desperately wants more to sponsor him.

If you would like to help this great cause please get in touch with Phil or Kay on 01263519703 or email [email protected] and pledge what you can – it just to see the video!

This is a greatrecipe that features on our Autumn menuhere at the Grove

We can cater for private dining for up to thirty people and we have an excellent menuavailable, so please do drop us an email at [email protected] or call us on01263512412 to book up.

And don’t forget our 1930s Black Tie MarqueeBall on New Year’s Eve!

THE CONFIT ► Four duck legs, perfect from Icarus Hines. I use Gressingham duck which is always agood local Norfolk bird.

► In a hot pan, sear the ducklegs in unsaltedbutter until golden brown. Place into an ovendish and season well with Maldon sea salt, thyme and garlic and a couple of bay leaves.

► Half-cover the legs with duck fat and coverwith baking parchment and foil.

► Cook in the oven for five to six hours (depending on the size or the legs) on gas markthree. The meat needs to be soft but not fallingoff the bone.

► Extract from the oil and leave to rest. Tubthe duck fat and when cool place in the fridgeto use next time.

DAUPHINOISE POTATOES► Pre-heat oven to gas mark three. Make sureyour oven dish is evenly coated with butter.

► Peel five large potatoes – we get ours directfrom the garden – thinly slice with a sharpknife or mandolin.

► Mix up 500ml of double cream, a couple of pinches of nutmeg, a good amount of seasoning and two crushed garlic cloves.

► Toss the potatoes in your cream mix, placeeverything into your gratin dish – layering theslices of potato – and bake for approximatelyan hour to 90 minutes, pressing down with awooden spoon every 15 minutes.

► The potatoes will come out lovely andgolden brown; leave to stand for at least tenminutes.

SIMPLE GARDEN BEETROOT JUS► Boil your beetroots for two to threee hoursand, while hot, peel them – wear rubber glovesof course! Dice up with a shallot, a medium-sized red onion and a knob of unsalted butter.

► Cook on a medium heat until soft, then add50ml of red wine, a dash of white wine vinegar, Maldon sea salt and black pepper and 75ml of chicken stock.

► Remove from the heat, puree with a stickblender until smooth, return to the heat for 10minutes and finish with a pinch of caster sugarto give some sweet balance to the acidity.

Dear Margaret,Having recently moved to Sheringham from Filby to helpsupport our daughter, both my wife and I have found thearea and its facilities very attractive.

I read an article in the local press regarding The Red Lionpublic house that used to trade in Upper Sheringham. I havespoken to a few local residents who assured me that it was a great‘local pub’.

According to the article quite a few prospective landlords were interested in running this pub. Do your readers think it would bepossible to start some type of petition or action group to ‘bringback The Red Lion’?

Yours sincerely,J E Cox

We received a call from the vets when a little cat wasbrought in by a concerned member of the public as they have no nearneighbours and it was apparent that it was a stray. As the cat was microchipped they were able to establish that it had been in our care and, knowing that the owners no longer lived at the address on the records, contacted us to see if had been reported lost or whether we had any othercontact details. Unfortunately, we were unable to help but are obviouslyconcerned for the cat’s future welfare as the person who is caring forhim at present does not want another cat. The vets have now been able toestablish the area where the people have moved to and with co-operationfrom the cat owner’s own vet are trying to make contact with them. Asthe little cat is half way from the area where his owners now live and hisold home we believe he was probably trying to make his way back there. We are hoping his owner can be found and he can be re-united withthem, otherwise he may come back into our care.

At this time of the year the vast majority ofthose re-homed are kittens although we havealso seen several of the lovely young mumsleave our care too. Some have been in direneed of some tender loving care when they join us and it is remarkable how quickly theyrespond when they receive it. Because they all receive a check at the vets before they go to new homes we can also identify any problems and this has been the situation withtwo little kittens recently. One little kitten had a hernia which will be repaired when he isneutered but the other has a serious heart murmur. Kittens do often have heart murmurs when they go for theirfirst vaccination and these have usually disappeared by the time theyhave the second. This will not be the case in this instance however. Bothkittens have been lucky to find new homes with understanding owners, the little girl with the heart murmur having been given a home with veterinary nurses who understand the significance of the situation andhow this could affect her.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858.Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on theabove number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Help Children in Zambia's "Building a Future" ProjectOctober 2014Many of the street children of Lusaka, Zambia have been very ‘damaged‘ by their experiences - they need professional help. That help can be freely obtained from worldwide volunteers. We are hoping to build a house that will accommodate up to six volunteer doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals! We have a team of builders from North Norfolk who are donating their costs, time and skills to go and build it in October 2014! How great is that! They arealso passing on their skills and tools to the older children, empowering them toearn a livelihood for themselves and future generations. We need to now raise£25,000 for the building materials. Please come along on 12 October to help us.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lambchallenges Vodafone Chief Exec oversignal failuresNorman Lamb has written to the Chief Executive of Vodafone, Guy Lawrence, to challenge Vodafone over its continued signal problems on the North Norfolk Coast. The local MP was madeaware of the problems after two constituents contacted him to say they had been without signalfor three days.

In his letter, Norman Lamb commented that “For there to have been yet another significant loss of service for Vodafone customers after the disruption that has already occurred recently is incredibly frustrating for customers. I also do not think it is acceptable. I would be grateful in the first instance if you could confirm what steps are being taken to rectify the problem as a matter of urgency. I would also be grateful if you could arrange for a senior representative ofVodafone UK to meet with me in North Norfolk to discuss steps that can be taken to improve the resilience of your network to ensure that this does not happen again”.

Norman Lamb met with representatives of the Countryside Alliance, who are running a “Sick ofNo Signal” campaign in rural areas to urge networks to improve their signal in the countryside.

65 extra frontline staff for north Norfolk's ambulance service'Act on Ambulances' campaigners have welcomed the promise of 65 extrafront-line staff here after the ambulance trust pledged to treat north Norfolkas a priority area.

The campaign, started by North Norfolk Labour Party, was launched afterconcerns about response times in the area over a year ago.

Throughout the campaign Act on Ambulances campaigners have kept the pressure on both theprevious and interim chief executives pointing out to them the ambulance trust's failures and highlighting thestories they have heard on the ground.

The concerns about response times from both residents and campaigners were confirmed in theAnthony Marsh report earlier this year.

Denise Burke, Labour's parliamentary candidate for the constituency, has welcomed the newsstating: "We hope the Trust will now deliver on this promise so that those living in north Norfolkcan finally regain confidence in the ambulance service.
