Landholders and wildlife benefit from bushfire prevention work
SEQ Catchments is helping landholders near Lamington National Park, south of
Beaudesert, to deal with the threat of bushfires by mapping and upgrading fire trails.
Landholders from the Kerry, Darlington, Running
Creek and Croftby districts and Rural Fire Service
(RFS) volunteers have been working with SEQ
Catchments to map existing fire trails on private land
and identify and upgrade those in need of repair.
Upgrades will help manage bushfire risk to bothproperties and wildlife habitat, and better prepare
landholders in tackling the fires.
Fire trails on 17 properties covering approximately
6,500 hectares of often rugged country have been
mapped, with more underway, resulting in about 15
kilometres of fire trail upgrades across 13 properties.
Colin Hastie, from SEQ Catchments Beaudesert office,
said that the project has been well received by local
landholders and RFS volunteers.
They completely understand that a well maintained network of fire trails is fundamental forbushfire management, Mr Hastie said.
The landholders certainly didnt have to be asked twice as they deal with the issue of
bushfires constantly, whether it be undertaking fire trail maintenance, managing fuel loads
on their properties or fighting fires.
They are fully aware of the value of this exercise to assist with bushfire issues, such as
helping with the practicalities of on-farm management, coordinating burn-offs and fire
fighting, and to help raise awareness with the community and government of the ongoing
need for support.
Mr Hastie said that SEQ Catchments has been successful in securing several stages of
funding to support the exercise through the Australian Government, QueenslandGovernment and Scenic Rim Regional Council.
An important part of the program has been the development of partnerships and plans
with the landholders which provides the best chance to keep support coming for the needs
of wildlife habitat and property into the future.
The way weve secured and delivered the funding is a clear demonstration of how
together we can all benefit from the range of issues, as much of the funding so far has
been sourced from ecological funds yet the benefit has also
effectively helped property and grazing issues.
