As I write this update, it should not be a surprise to anyone along the Suncoast that the summer of 2019, so far, has been excessively wet and hot. Record amounts of rainfall and increased average temperatures for the month of July have carried into August. Despite the daily rain and oppressive afternoon temperatures we have managed to keep our course projects moving forward, providing access to all amenities of the club including golf, tennis, dining and aquatics. The Groves golf course has been closed for the summer. The course has been stripped, reshaped and sprigs have been planted as the resurfacing project continues its progress. Decent weather and the heat of summer will allow the Groves greens to regenerate with an improved playable surface as we move into high season. Additional areas of the Groves course are being enhanced as well to include tee boxes and fairways. Work on the Highlands and Meadows courses continue as we focus on the Highlands front 9 holes and on improving the overall strength of the turf grass on the Meadows. Work continues in all areas of the club as we prepare for the coming season. We look forward to the temperatures up north dropping and the Members returning to the Suncoast.

Hope to see you all at the club soon.

Andrew KingsleyGeneral [email protected]

Sincerely,

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The summer has flown by, the kids are back in school and The Club is gearing up for season to start!

The Membership Department is proud to announce the Meadows New Homeowner Program. Anyone who purchases a home within the Meadows Community after July 1, 2019 will qualify for a 3-month complimentary membership to the Club. The new homeowner can choose from a golf, tennis or social membership (certain restrictions apply). Please call the Membership Department to set an appointment to learn more details on this great new program.

With the unveiling of the new homeowner program, we need volunteer Ambassadors to welcome all the new homeowners as they join the Club. We are looking to you, our Members for help to grow our Ambassador Committee. Contact the Membership Department if you are interested in becoming an Ambassador and we will connect you with the Ambassador Committee. Help us spread the word to the new members how wonderful The Meadows Country Club is!

New M

To the many members of the Meadows Community,

Sandy Díaz, who passed away April 30, was

a beacon of light that banished the darkness. Her exemplary good humor, faith and love for all whom she met is legendary. As Francisco pointed out in referring to their 47 years together as man and wife, Sandy loved travel, books, people—and him. That circle of life is illustrated in the gift that friends donated to honor her memory with the bench along Longmeadow that sits in a restful, tree-covered view of one of the ponds. Equally memorable but perhaps not so “nature-laden” as the calming site of the bench, we now have a piece of statuary, “La Nena” (the young girl), which Francisco donated in memory of Sandy. The photo gives the visitor to the pool area a “call to attention,” a sense of “Look at me!” for different reasons.

The abstract sculpture calls to mind several images. One of them is the playful nature of the lines—they seem related to movements of a swimmer having fun in the water. Sandy herself was an avid swimmer who often did laps in the pool, so the setting for this donation is appropriate. Another image to consider

is the gracefulness of the lines. As I think of Sandy, I remember the grace and warmth she shared with all who met her—and here we thank her for her taste and desire to “give back” to the community. Francisco told me that when they were in Vietnam on their Southeast Asia trip, Sandy immediately fell in love with the piece. To Sandy, perhaps, there were aspects of her life that the sculpture evoked in her—the playfulness of the circular moves, the “legs” kicking out of the water, the gracefulness of the movements, the joy of being free and to roam and discover. I don’t know if that was the case, but I would like it to be. To be sure, it would take “no time flat” for them to decide that this artwork was coming back to the US. Whenever we use the pool now, Francisco and Sandy have provided us a special gift—one that permanently allows us to play in our thoughts as we observe the waves and motion that our little girl smoothly and effortlessly demonstrates. Thank you, Sandy and Francisco, what a wonderful and unending memory the sculpture is.

By, Dr. Paul A. García

The Groves Golf Course has undergone many changes with the start of the green renovation project. It started with cutting off the sod on the greens, removing all that material and several inches below the surface. Much of that material was used to fill low areas, fill areas that have eroded and bunkers that were no longer in play. The next step was to fumigate the soil to ensure grass, weeds and mole crickets would not be a problem in the near future. That process is complete. We have now moved onto the next stage, leveling the greens and prepping them to be sprigged next week. Having the original blueprints of the Groves golf course helps in the decision making on the size, location and undulations of the greens which are currently being shaped as you read this.

The greens have certainly not been the only focus of this renovation. Some of the tees have been modified or adjusted to accommodate mature trees. Some of the bunker locations had lost their integrity and have been leveled and turned into grass knolls and valleys. The tees, greens and surroundings have also been sprayed heavily with herbicides and pesticides to strengthen the soil and eradicate what shouldn’t be there allowing grass to grow and become stronger.

Maintenance is continuing on all three golf courses with the main focus now on the Groves course. The Meadows greens continue to heal and fill in along with the fairways and tees thickening as they become healthier. The Highlands also continues to improve as we move forward with our action plan. One of the next steps is trimming trees on holes 10 through 18 which will start soon. Minor irrigation upgrades are in place and have been completed by our staff to help with the success of these many projects. We will also be working on completing the putting green and our greens turf nursery that we haven’t had since 2016, a vital part of greens maintenance.

Thank you for your support!

Recently I wrote an article regarding how TMCC is supporting the Sarasota Military Academy athletics, the school has received monetary donations already, thank you to those of you that contributed! If you are still interested in donating its not too late, you can do so anytime online at http://www.sarasotamilitaryacademy.org/support-sma-athletics, or contact Crystal at the fitness center for other options.

In addition to both the boys and girls golf teams using the Meadows course as their home course this season (August-mid October), we are hosting the Regional golf tournament scheduled for October 21st with a rain date of October 23rd. We will also be holding an annual fundraiser in April for the Athletic department. Please let me know if you have any interest in volunteering for either event.

The Cross-Country team has also been running in the Meadows Community, and using the pool for cross training once a week.

Additionally, inside the fitness center we have been able to replace the worn pads on machines and recover one of the stretching tables. A BIG shout out to one of my anonymous clients for her sewing skills!

We’ve kicked off the summer months by introducing our new Fountain View menus for BOTH lunch and dinner. Chef Joseph’s passion for cooking shows as he introduces quality ingredients into all of his creations; he has new items that fit all palates and appetites. We’ve also introduced our new dessert menu, which consists of smaller, yet shareable items. $5 burger Tuesdays’ at Center Court Lounge have been a success as the members have shown much support for the new night, thank you to all of you. Our happy hour on Friday’s has also changed and is ALL night, 4pm-9pm. For you wine lovers, we’ve introduced a couple of new featured wines by the glass (or bottle) that are on premise wines only, Broken Dreams Chardonnay and The Calling Cabernet, both California wines. Come out and have a drink and try the new items on all the menus and as always Wednesday night is still Pasta Night and Thursdays are still Prime Rib Night. We also have some fun member social events coming up that we’d love to see you at; hope to see you either in the Fountain View Lounge, Center Court Lounge or in the Regency Room!

The Fall……while most of America is getting ready for coats and sweaters here in Florida we are still trying to stay cool and dry! That doesn’t mean we still don’t feel the same excitement for the new season, which is why it’s a great time to have a party or gathering!

One of the MANY perks of The Meadows Country Club is how many different locations we have for an event!

Here are the spaces that are available:

The Boardroom: Seats up to 30 for an intimate lunch or dinner. Overlooks the pond, both water features as well as the gorgeous putting green and golf course. With floor to ceiling windows and your own Private Staff, your guests are sure to be impressed.

Fountain View Lounge: The Fountain View Lounge has been a long time favorite for having an event. With its beautiful carved bar, wood floors, mirrored dance area and extra perks like the Patio and the Boardroom that are also able to be used, it’s one of the best places for a celebration. This space can easily hold up to 100 people. Private Staff await your dining requests and a mixologist is ready to wow your guests with their cocktail creations. The fabulous views make this truly a beautiful setting for any occasion.

The FVL Patio: This is one of my favorite spaces. Gorgeous decking, a covered area with ceiling fans and an impressive outdoor fireplace. This is a great space for either an alfresco dinner or (my favorite) a cocktail party with passed Hors D’oeurves. There is space for a private bar and the patio overlooks the pond, picturesque bridge and the rolling green golf course. Easy to add live music and with our fantastic waitstaff walking around offering your guests beautiful creations form our kitchen it will be a night or day to remember. This space is ideally used for parties of 25-50 people.

Center Court Lounge: Across the street at our fantastic Tennis and Pool complex are 3 venues available to you.

• CCL is a little gem and a great place for casual get togethers. With seating for up to 60 inside, its own bar and tv’s, it’s a fun environment and wants for nothing. A great menu and a staff that can create a sense of jovial fun, CCL is hard to beat for light hearted occasions.

• The CCL Deck itself is one of the prettiest locations here at the Meadows. Accommodating up to 75

people it is a magical area. With big trees drooping over, twinkle lights going up their trunks and plenty of space for live music, this is a lovely place for merrymaking. Either sit down dining, buffet or a cocktail party, who doesn’t want to spend an evening dancing under the stars.

• The CCL Pool Deck is exactly what a Country Club pool area should be! Large covered space with fans and seating for up to 150 this is what a pool party should look like! Child friendly and space for bands, dancing, buffet, private bar etc… this area is truly a blank space for whatever you can think of. Glowing balls in the pool, tropical cocktails and fabulous food to tantalize even the pickiest of eaters. This is a fantastic place for a fun and lively gathering.

The Regency Room: This space is incredible. It can be broken up into 3 different rooms or be used as one full room, The Regency Room is something to be seen. Floor to ceiling windows down the entire room with breath-taking views of The Meadows Golf Course makes this room very special. Able to hold up to 250 people, THIS is where you come for an event. Beautiful dance floor, space for DJ, band, photo booth, etc…. whatever you can think of we can get. Perfect for anniversaries, weddings, and any of those milestone occasions. With its own private bar and upstairs kitchen EVERYTHING is catered to you and your guests. Personalized cocktails, stations with chefs awaiting your requests, chocolate fountains, the list goes on….! Because it can be broken up this room fits groups of 40 easily without seeming too big. It is a fantastic room.

*Other spaces that can be used are the Tennis Pro Shop, The Golf Deck and rooms at the Fitness Center. (For details on these please contact Ashley Watts)

And the most AMAZING thing about these spaces is that you as members don’t pay a room rental charge!! So start planning your next celebration/event with us. We promise to make it a memorable and special occasion!!
