ABOUT MESSIAH

MUSIC DIRECTOR: DR. ZANAIDA ROBLESZanaida Robles is a singer, conductor, composer, and music instructor born, raised, and educated inSouthern California. As a concert soprano soloist, studio vocalist for film and television, andprofessional ensemble singer, Dr. Robles has sung throughout the United States, and in parts of Europe,New Zealand, and Australia. Dr. Robles has prepared choirs for performances with such artists as JoshGroban, Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald, and Wayne Brady, and has received numerous awardsand distinctions. She holds a Doctor of Music Arts degree from the USC Thornton School of Music, aMaster of Music degree from CSU Northridge, and a Bachelor of Music degree from CSU Long Beach.

Messiah (HWV 56), the English-language oratorio composed by George FridericHandel in 1741, is structured in three parts. Part I begins with the prophecy of theMessiah and his virgin birth by several prophets, namely Isaiah. Part II covers thePassion, death, resurrection, ascension, and the later spreading of the Gospel. Part IIIconcentrates on Paul's teaching of the resurrection of the dead and Christ'sglorification in heaven. A devout Anglican named Charles Jennens wrote the librettofor the Messiah. In his libretto, Jennens’s intention was not to dramatise the life andteachings of Jesus, but to acclaim the "Mystery of Godliness", using a compilation ofextracts from the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible, and from the Psalmsincluded with the Book of Common Prayer.

Messiah remains Handel’s best-known work. Its splendid musical elements and themesof comfort, joy, and redemption have resonated with audiences around the world formore than 200 years. The popular Part I of Messiah is sometimes called the"Christmas" portion, as it is frequently performed during Advent in concert or as asing-along. In many parts of the world, it is the accepted practice for the audience tostand for “Hallelujah Chorus.” The tradition is said to have originated with the firstLondon performance of Messiah, which was attended by King George II. As the firstnotes of the triumphant Hallelujah Chorus rang out, the king was so moved that herose to his feet and remained standing until the end of the chorus. Royal protocol hasalways dictated that when the monarch stands, everyone in the monarch's presence isalso required to stand. Thus, the entire audience and orchestra stood when the kingstood during the performance, initiating a tradition that has lasted more than twocenturies.
