MINI CONTENDER

Just as I was finishing my second Fokker DVII, which is yet to have its maiden

flight, club member Bob McEwin asked if I was interested in building a Mini Contender. He said it was a nice handling sport plane which I would enjoy flying. I had no idea what a Mini Contender was, so the first thing was to see what I could find on the internet. Apparently the original Contender, an American design, was released by Top Flite in 1969. It had a wingspan of 1350 mm, intended for a .40 to .60 glow engine. The Mini Contender is based on the original design, but has a shorter wingspan of 915 mm and is electric powered (.10 equivalent motor).

I have a soft spot for nice looking vintage aircraft, and being a build junkie I couldn’t refuse Bob’s offer. A short kit duly arrived with photocopies of the Contender build manual as well as the Mini Contender’s assembly manual (the Mini is available in ARF form). Bob’s short kit comprised the usual set of CAD cut wing ribs, wing tips, fuselage formers and doublers, firewall, tail feathers and various other assorted balsa, ply and hardwood shapes. Given the number of components it was closer to a full kit than a short kit. Anyway, Bob was developing the model as one of his product lines and wanted some feedback about how it went together; and I was happy to be the guinea pig.

As the saying goes, read the instructions; which I obediently did. As anxious as I was to start, I still had to put the finishing touches on the DVII which was hogging the building board. A week or so later the DVII was finished and the building board was clear. I was now ready to start working on the Mini Contender in earnest. Looking at the Contender build manual (which was essentially the instructions for building the Mini Contender) I listed what items I’d need that weren’t supplied in the short kit. Rummaging through my parts bin as well as my scraps/offcuts bin I had most of what I’d need to complete the model. Moral: never throw anything away, you never know when it will come in handy for the next building project or repair job. If you do throw it away, more than likely you’ll need it the day after.

I started putting the wing together following the usual procedure: ribs, spars, leading edge, trailing edge, servo rails, undercarriage mounts, wing mount dowels (front) and wing support (rear), sheeting top and bottom from the leading edge to the spars. So far so good. Wing tips next. Nothing unexpected with that, I was very happy with how it all came together. Ailerons and tail feathers next, too easy.

Now for some thinking and planning before tackling the fuselage. Where to install the elevator and rudder/steering servos, ESC and receiver? The full size Contender instructions could only be used as a guide, and I had to improvise things for the Mini Contender. OK, it was clear in my mind what I had to do. Once again the usual procedure: doublers, formers, sides, firewall, underside with a vent for the cooling air to escape. Making the turtle deck and top hatch was a bit of a drama because I couldn’t follow the plan, so here I definitely improvised. The model is supposed to have a moulded canopy and cowling, which are obtainable from Top Flite in the USA, who also supply pre-bent undercarriage legs. I improvised again, making an open cockpit (more of a vintage appearance in my opinion), making a balsa cowling and bending piano wire for the main undercarriage legs. For the nose wheel I used a spare tail wheel from a Boomerang trainer which was in my parts bin.

The final shape of my Mini Contender fuselage doesn’t follow the shape of Top Flite’s ARF exactly but that won’t affect its flying characteristics. Besides, who can tell when it’s in the air?

Getting close to finishing the build I decided on a colour

scheme; predominantly white with red stripes underneath the wing to help orientation. A splash of blue with a little red trim on the top of the wing, complemented with red and blue stripes on the rear fuselage. A couple of decals to finish it off – yes, I can live with that.

Almost there. Glue the tail feathers, install the electrics, connect the control rods. Set up the control throws and C of G according to the Mini Contender assembly manual, set up dual rates with a bit of expo and it’s ready for the all-important maiden flight. That will have to wait for a nice day, which we’re not getting too many of lately; but it won’t be long before we explore its flight envelope.

RETRO DAY 2016

By Don Howie

The weather at the retro day was fine with moderate winds, making it suitable for radio models, but did not

allow flying of free flight models.

The most popular R/C kit makers in the 1960’s were Top Flite Models inc and Carl Goldberg Models Inc, that were based in Chicago, USA. They started from Comet Models that kitted the great power model freeflight designs in the 1930’s designed by Carl Goldberg. Carl had a younger friend that helped build his aircraft, named Sid Axelrod.

After the war, Carl and Sid combined and formed Top Flite Models that mainly produced the designs of Carl Goldberg. In 1956, Carl left Top Flite and formed his own company that produced radio kits, mainly of Goldberg’s designs, Top Flite produced the contest winning R/C aerobatic multi models, that won the World Champs or US Nats from 1960, starting with the “Orion” and then the “Taurus” model that was popular at CMFC in the 1960’s.

First model shown is the “Skylark” 56 flown by Bob Edgecomb that uses a Cyech Maga motor 22/30/2 that has a KVA of 1920. Running on 3 lipos( 11.1 volts) , it performs best at over 20,000 revs ( volts x KVA) so Bob has fitted an 8x4 APC prop.

The Carl Goldberg “Skylark” kit was introduced about 1964 and used the wing and tail from the “Falcon 56” kit. It could be built as a twin engine model and was used from single channel to 10 channels (reeds).

Ken Whenham had his 40 sized “Kaos” model powered by an OS 50 glo and had high speed pylon type performance. The design is by Joe Bridi in California started with the “sun Fli” 60 sized models in the late 1960’s and the “Kaos” models from the early 70’s. The “Kaos” is still a great aerobatic design today.

Kym Stringer had a “Shooting Star”, the glass fuselage and foam wing kit produced for Model Flight about 1980. The model flown by Kym has an OS 61 FSR glo fitted.

Brian Lockett from Strathalbyn Club flew his control line “Talisman” 22 inch span stunter with a Taipan Tyro 1.9cc diesel. It was covered with Jap silk and trimmed with red auto finish. It looks to be based on the “Baby Flite Streak” kitted by Top Flite, popular in the 1960’s.

Steve Wilkin from CMFC flew a nicely finished “Kaos 60” with a Webra 61 glo. This model has a foam wing for fast construction and was finished with acrylic yellow and red trim.

Our newsletter editor, Bob McEwin had an interesting R/C model this being the Top Flite “Contender” at 54 inch span which was all balsa sheet construction and could be built in 8 hours. Introduced in the early 1970’s designed by Dave Platt in 1969, who worked for Top Flite from 1968 (ex UK), the model featured a centre flap for slow speed landings. The model flown by Bob has an OS46 AX glo fitted, turning an APC 11x6 prop.

Bob Edgecombe and the writer flew Falcon (Carl Goldberg kits) models. The Falcon 56 first introduced about 1962 was a popular R/C trainer, single to 6 channels (reeds) and was very easy to build. Bob has fitted a Thunder Tiger 25 glo turning an APC 9x5 prop and has Japanese iron on film on

the wings and tail with tissue and paint on the fuselage and fin.The model has ailerons fitted.

The writer flew his single channel “Junior Falcon” 37 inch span model, built by the late Reg Laing about 1965 using Futaba single channel radio, with rubber driven escapement, now replaced with a vertical mounted servo to turn the rudder as original. The wing was recently re-covered with Chinese silk to replace the brittle Jap silk and is powered by a COX .049 Babe Bee as original. It performed very well in the wind.

Mike Savill came late and had a couple of interesting models. The Top Flite, 29 inch span “ Schoolboy” was powered witha COX .010 glo, the smallest American engine ever produced.

NOARLUNGA MODEL AERO SPORTS

When I took up this hobby (some 16 years ago) there were only

a few ARF models around and by and large they were pretty much crap. The covering would split any time and glue joints were also very suspect which made maintenance a constant issue.

Not so today; yes, there are still el cheapos out there, but almost all manufacturers have lifted their game as ARF

models became more popular. Two that come to mind are Wayne Millers Landscape and Howard Walls Tucano. I have included photos of each for you in case you haven’t seen them at the club.

Wayne Miller’s Landscape is from Black Horse. Construction is conventional Balsa & Ply with a high quality plastic covering. It has a 1.8 mtr wingspan and is designed for 25 to 30 cc petrol but he chose to go electric and has set it up with a 10S 5000maH battery combo (actually a matched 6S & a 4S) driving a Turnigy G160 with a 18X10 electric wooden prop which gives about 10 minutes of flying with 30% reserve. The use of the two batteries allowed him to play with positioning and get the perfect balance setup. Wayne says it flies beautifully on 40% throttle and would work well on an 8S battery but he gets more flight time from the 10S setup and it has the power to go vertical if he is game to use it all. You can see from the photo that it is easy to see in the bright yellow and white colour scheme. Even though it appears to be a fairly large model, it still fits into Wayne’s compact SUV as the wings are typical of today’s models being two pieces. Even with the size of the battery packs the model still weighs in at only 6.85Kg which is just under the heavy model area.

Howard’s Tucano is from Phoenix and is typically in the Brazilian colour scheme. Very similar construction of Balsa & Ply with Oracover giving it a real sound outer skin. This is the first model at NMAS to use the new OS GGT15 glow/petrol motor and it is getting better as it runs in. O.S recommend flying once the motor is tuned rather than tethering and

running in as it apparently gets a better run in up in the sky. This model has mechanical retracts and looks great with wheels up. It uses a total of 11 servos and with a wingspan of 1730mm it comes in at just on 4.5 Kg fully assembled.

Like Wayne, Howard is using a Spektrum TX with a mixture of servos to drive the various controls. The third plane this month is Trevor Tomsett’s ¼ scale De Havilland Beaver on floats. When Trevor started restoring this

plane it looked like a mess which had obviously been trialled with a variety of engines by the number of mounting holes in the firewall. Full credit to him for his restoration including the colour scheme which in full size was an actual passenger plane in Tasmania. The motor is now a 45cc petrol of some Chinese brand (aren’t they all today) and he has recently added some new inflatable to make landings at the NMAS field a little softer.

Hopefully we will get to see all three of these models on Military & Civil scale day on Sunday November 27th. With the weather slowly improving, I hope to see a lot more members getting out and dusting off their Military & Civil

scale models before 27th November. There will obviously be a couple of working bees prior to the event and I would urge all members to join in and help make

this event the success it has been in previous years.

Happy flying Snoopy!

Whyalla Show Control Line Competition August 20th and

21st 2016

The Whyalla MAC’s organisation and preparation was outstanding once again. Thanks to their stalwart

members Brenton Thomas, Mark Poschkens and Jeff Fell the Showground oval was in excellent condition and the weather they booked was close to perfect just avoiding the 100km/hr gales two days prior to the event.

Classic Stunt; The first event on Saturday morning was Classic Stunt per MAAA rules but

open to any model. A few entrant forgot manoeuvres in Round 1 as the pattern is very different form the modern F2B one. In fact the pattern was completely unfamiliar to Mick Laundy who travelled all the way form KI. He gave it a go but lost line tension early in the pattern to crash but sustaining only minor damage which was later repaired. Well done Mick for having a go!

Almost all entrants improved their scores in Round 2 which was flown on Saturday afternoon after conclusion of Slow Combat. Peter Anglberger remembered the triangles to just snatch 3rd from Maris Dislers, despite a needle setting resulting in an over rich mixture once airborne. Alan Roadknight upped the ante with a smooth flight but lost points due many manoeuvres being too large but scored enough to hold second place. Jeff Fry’s new FliteStreak now

nicely trimmed allowed him to fly excellent shapes with heights close to the 45 degree rule book requirement. His R2 flight was the best of the competition with high Reverse Wingover and Triangles scores, high K factor manoeuvres make a large contribution to the total score resulting in an emphatic win for Jeff.

Slow Combat; The local version of slow combat allows any 2.5 cc model

powered not faster than 3 seconds per lap with streamer fitted, otherwise being run to the MAAA Vintage Combat Rules, with 60 points per cut and 1 point per second of airtime in a 4 minute combat period. As time was of the essence sudden death was enforced rather than the more usual 1st round losers getting a second chance in a losers’ sudden death.

The first ‘bout’ between Maris Dislers and Jason Anglberger saw the best combat of the weekend with both models being airborne for most of the 4 minute combat period. Maris took the first cut and flew some clever evasion until Jason replied with a cut of his own. Both pilots then became more aggressive with Maris snatching a second cut. Jason chased hard but glanced the ground with 15 seconds to go, so being a 20 seconds behind on air time due to a slow start and 1 cut down there was little point trying to get airborne again.

Maris won his second bout easily so went straight to the final. Peter Anglberger survived line tangles in his bouts with Mark Poschkens and Rob Fitzgerald to reach the final Maris again made the first cut, Peter replied but grounded his model soon after losing significant air time. When airborne he conceded a second cut. The bout was truncated by a mid-air collision shortly after it resumed. Both models were permanently grounded resulting in a 2:1 cut plus air time win to Maris.

Whyalla 500 Rat Race:It was decided to run 2 x ‘3 up’ races of 500 laps each.

In Race One Maris whipped with great vigour but also delivered his model to pitman Neil with consistency. Maris’ Parra 2.5 setting was spot on for all of the race giving them a comfortable win. The same could not be said of the Parra of Jeff Fry. It could not make up its mind whether it was over or under compressed and the additional stops plus slower airtime meant they would never catch Maris and Neil. Alan Roadknight and Jon Barbara struggled with a new model and motor but a bit more preparation and practice will result in an improved performance next year.

Race two resulted in an easy win for Mark and Neil and the winning time for this year. Jon Witzke’s model showed promised but retired early due to fuel feed problems. Rob and Brenton’s FP15 glow could not match the Nelson horsepower of Poschkens / Baker, but they completed the 500lap marathon for a fourth place.

ADELAIDE MODEL AEROSPORT

For the fist time in around 20 years, the sound of model pylon racing

was heard over the skies of Monarto. After months of negotiation, members of SAMPRA descended on the AMA field at Monarto to conduct their monthly pylon event.

Racing got away on time at about 10:00am with a solid contingent of contestants. One participant, who will remain nameless was over 30 minutes late and missed his first heat. There’s a rumor he allowed his GPS navigation system to guide him to the field. Unfortunately the GPS chose the scenic route which he blames on his wife for fiddling with the preference settings.

For some of the pilots, the new surroundings made orientation around the pylons a challenge but other than some small landing and take off accidents, again due to the

unfamiliar field, the entire even went very smoothly, 4 heats being held. By the end of the day, the pilots of aircraft that had escaped earlier damage were using the field as if they were regular members of AMA. At precisely 12:30PM the racing was paused so the members could enjoy a superb 2 course meal prepared by the AMA catering committee. The dining area was decked out for a proper sit down meal with tables, table cloths and cutlery. I understand it was their first effort since being formed and in my humble opinion, has set a standard.

It was an enjoyable day with great weather, food and no major incidents. The Hudson Car Club even came for a look.

CATEGORY REPORTS

Control line:

Despite some poor weather and soccer matches at Unley Rd AAC members prepared for the WhyallaShow CL event whenever the opportunity arose. The conditions in Whyalla on the weekend of the 20th and 21st of August were very good and theevent was a great success.A full report and photos will be submitted to the Newsletter editor for publication this month.

Looking further ahead SHMAC are gearing up for the Ringmaster Flyathon on the October LWE.Unfortunately this coincides with the NSW State CL Champs which a numberof AAC members plan to enter but there should still be a number of Ringmasters remaining to taketo the air that weekend. If any MASA members would like to build a model(they will need to get their skates on) I can provide them with a digital copy of the plan.

GENERAL BUSINESS

SA FIELD PURCHASE: Following a submission by MASA to MAAA in support of the purchase ofland in SA, the MAAA has granted approval and funding to go ahead with the purchase of 82 acres ofland at Currency Creek. MASA is currently awaiting the outcome of any objections in relation to thepartial change of land usage lodged with Alexandrina Council which closes on September16th.SPORT SA: MASA has approached Sport SA on several occasions seeking their organisations supportin attaining recognition for aeromodelling as a sport in SA. The ultimate goal in achieving thisoutcome is all SA modelling clubs to be eligible to apply for sporting development grants.Following a short discussion the committee decided that financial membership of this organisationwas no longer justifiable and that MASA progress this long standing issue with the Minister for Sport.

BVMAC: The Barossa club area approval is due to expire later in the year and the club is seeking ahigher height limit than previously granted. On submission of a new area approval, CASA willdetermine the appropriate height limit for the operation of model aircraft in that location.

MASA WEBSITE: To facilitate regular updates, members are requested to please send inphotographs of models and events to the webmaster for inclusion into the website.

NOISE: NMAS are currently working with the EPA in the resolution of a noise complaint. This servesas a timely reminder that complaints and the issue of sensitivity to noise generated by model aircraftcan be a challenging and time consuming issue for any club.

AUCTION: HMAC will be holding another Auction on Friday the 4th November at Cosgrove Hall.Further details will be posted in the MASA newsletter.

SSL: The club has recently purchased a flail mower and is going ahead with a new shed to housetheir mower.

SCMAS: The club will be holding a static display of models at the Pt Elliot show on 8/9th October.
