Welcome to the 5th ACS Leadership Summit and thank you for being here today.

In 2008, during my time as a Finance Analyst in the City of London, I had one of those moments of euphoria thinking about the immense potential of the African Caribbean Society (ACS) at universities in the United Kingdom. This vision led me to create the ACS Project that, over the years, has designed and brought to you the following flagship programmes: ACS Leadership Summit (ACS LS), ACS in the City, Top Black Talent (TBT), ACS Survey, ACS Focus Group and ACS Leaders Chat. These programmes complement one another.

The main mission behind the ACS Project was to create enabling platforms where the ACS (through their Presidents) connect with renowned employers and maintain a sustainable relationship thereafter. We achieve this in three key ways.

First, we annually celebrate the ever-growing and diverse spread of the ACS network in the UK through the ACS LS as you will witness today. Over the years, well-known employer brands as well as prominent individuals who enlighten ACS Presidents on best practices in leadership and management have proudly supported the ACS LS.

Secondly, the ACS Project is also passionate about directly connecting ambitious black university students and graduates (often current or former ACS members) with leading employers in sectors such as Banking, Law, Technology and Public Services. This is done as an individual career insight day event (also known as Forums) for each sector under the ACS in the City. As the ACS Project programmes are intertwined, the ACS in the City events are designed and run taking into account, among others, feedback from the annual ACS National Survey, ACS Leaders Chat and ACS Focus Group.

Finally, the ACS Project’s online platform including website www.africancaribbeansociety.com and social media channels (such as LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter) are dedicated to the activities of all the ACS and employment opportunities. Today, the past perception attached to the ACS as an entertainment-only society is slowly fading away - thanks to the joint effort of the ACS Project team and ACS committee members over these years. More societies are now eager to raise the bar.

To sum up, the ACS Project has come a long way from a concept to an established reality. It is even more relevant today and has generated a lot of goodwill from the ACS across UK universities, which it serves. However, when I started this in my flat in South West London, I never thought about the day that I would play a less active role in the ACS Project or leave entirely. Regrettably, that time has come and it is a tough decision indeed.

After 6 years of leading the ACS Project, together with a passionate and dedicated team of individuals some of whom have evolved to explore other aspirations, it is time for me to do the same. My dream from the start was that the ACS Project would outlive my presence. Like the cycle in any new idea, you take it through the conceptualization to implementation and the execution stage. We have completed the cycle and the list of employer brands whom we have worked with in the past and present is a living testament that we were right to try, work hard and do this against the odds.

My love for the ACS Project has not waned and my pursuit of a new ambition is nothing other than confidence that a new team can take the baton and achieve much more than I have. I will now take a backseat to support the new team more strategically than operationally in order to raise the bar on what is achievable.

To all who have supported the ACS Project from its inception to date, I am deeply grateful for the unwavering and proud commitment. To those, both students and employers, who are just experiencing the ACS Project for the first time, I want you to know that our vision is driven to raise the bar and deliver for you.

I wish all the new ACS committee members a successful tenure in office. Thank you and I hope you enjoy this event.

Best wishes,Hugo Obi.

chiNONSO alexaNDRa NjOKU law | University of leicester | acS President for the 2012/2013 academic year.

Being the acS President has thought me a lot, i thought i knew it all but i was subjected to learning even while leading. i always wanted to support and be involved with a charity, where i can give back to the society in the little way that i could and i was able to achieve this with the help and platform acS gave to me. also having attended the last acS Summit (which was very inspiring), i also wanted to organise a sort of insight day for my fellow students. just to give them an opportunity to listen to, meet and speak with few companies and firms and also guest speakers. This also i was able to achieve through acS. My experience as acS President can only be described in one word, Bliss!

NiKKi OGUNeconomics | University of Nottingham | acS President 2012/13

This year i have, with the help of my committee of 12 exec members, been successful in my plan to completely turn the reputation of Notts acS around. i’ve managed to eliminate our original society debt of £2000 through major sponsorship deals, which i was able to obtain over the summer totaling £6500. Over the course of the year, we held a total of 15 events including our first ever ‘acS alumni evening’ and a ‘jazz, Funk & Soul’ showcase featuring Shakka and jacob Banks. we ended the year on a high after being awarded the ‘Most improved Society’ award, for the first time in 4 years. My experiences as President this year have made me extremely passionate about the acS movement as a whole, and i have been able to show this in my guidance of and support for incoming acS exec members whom i am familiar with in different universities.

i was on the committee from October as an interim VP. however after the holiday period, the President was no longer able to continue his duties, so i assumed the Presidential position, until March when elections were held and ran for President of the 2013-4 Term. although it was difficult at first adjusting to the new role, i had a lot of support from other committee members and in the end we were very successful and all our goals were achieved.

TUMi SOTiReclinical Science | University of exeter | acS President 2012/13

During my year as acS President, membership quadrupled and we finished the year with over 80 members. Our annual profits increased by more than 200% as well. During this year we launched many novel events. For example the winter Ball (which was done in collaboration with exeter’s Nigerian Society). we also had an opportunity to collaborate with many other societies including amnesty international, Oxfam, exeter international Society and exeter’s Nigerian Society. we also managed to support two charities Restore(a local anti trafficking charity ) and Meet Kate ( a charity base in Ghana). we accomplished this with no sponsorship whatsoever. all in all, we managed to accomplish our aim of building a legacy from which others years can build on. and it just goes to show, that no matter how small an acS may be your can accomplish great things.
